Opal Lillian Bassett, 94, of Rolla, died at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Rolla Manor Care.
She was born October 29, 1909, in Hayden, a daughter of Thomas and Mary (Nelson) Doyel.
Survivors include: two sons, Donald Bassett, Ballwin and Norris Bassett, Anderson, Indiana; two daughters, Janice Rosenburg, Rolla and Arlene Shanks, Vienna; 10 grandchildren and 17 geat-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2004, in the Kenner Church of God, Dixon. Interment will be in the Kenner Cemetery, Dixon.

CARROLL
Cora Marie Carroll, age 62, Camdenton, Mo., died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Lake Regional Health Systems, Osage Beach, Mo.
Survivors include: one daughter, Ramona Condra and husband, Brad, of Eldon, Mo. ; four stepsons, Jerry Carroll of Montreal, Mo., Tom Carroll and wife, Becky, of Montreal, Mo. ; Al Nutter of Lebanon, Mo., Larry Nutter of Buffalo, Mo. ; one granddaughter, Samantha Condra of Eldon, Mo.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 18, 2004, at 10 a.m. . Burial will be in the Laughlin Cemetery in Camdenton, Mo.
Visitation will be 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, in the Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home Chapel, of Camdenton. Allee Holman-Howe Funeral Homes, Camdenton, Mo.

HASTY
Mary Frances Hasty, age 86 of Eldon, died June 17, 2004.
She was born March 3, 1918, to John & Minta Davis. On February 3, 1934, she was married to Eugene W. Hasty.
Survivors include her husband, three daughters, Martha Atwell of Springhill, Kansas, Mary Ann Bryan of St. Charles, and Ruth Ann Fry of Eldon; one brother, Delbert Davis; three sisters, Jean Powell, Emily Moody, and Arlene Meuser; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and six great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 21, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Eldon. Rev. Joel Atwell will officiate. Interment will be in Eldon City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at Rekus Funeral Home in Eldon.

MANN
Stanley E. Mann, age 68, of rural Piedmont, died on his farm Monday, June 14, 2004.
Mr. Mann was born January 1, 1936, in Riverside, Mo., the son of Martha Berniece (Pratt) Mann and Carl L. Mann, his parents preceded him in death. He was married December 30, 1961, to Patsy J. (Pence) Mann, who survives.
Mr. Mann was the proud father of two sons, Tony Mann of Festus, husband of Carla and father of Kassie and Collin, and Scott Mabury of Toronto, Ontario Canada, husband of Donna Spritzer and father of Scotia. Stan was the brother of Carolyn Sue (Mann) Lineberry, who survives.
He attended local schools and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1954, where he was class president and an accomplished athlete. Stan attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and Southeast Missouri State University. He left college to serve the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged.
After the Army, Stan continued his previous employment with Union Electric in St. Louis, a job that lasted 39‡ years. During that time, he assisted his father on the family farm and started his own farming operations, raising crops, timber, and beef cattle.
Mr. Mann and his wife retired from Hillsboro to their farm in 1994, and they quickly became acquainted and reacquainted with local residents and civic matters. A well-known local figure, generous farmer, and significant landowner, Stanley Mann was highly regarded by many acquaintances, as well as deeply loved by his family and numerous friends.
Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, at the Ruegg Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at Ruegg Funeral Home on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the greatful family requests memorials be sent to Bluff View Fire Association.

McGINNIS
Mary McGinnis, age 61, of Versailles, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Good Shepherd Care Center, Versailles.
Survivors include: her husband, Franklin "Butch" McGinnis, of the home; her mother, Cora Munsterman, of Stover, and brother, Ronnie Munsterman, of Stover.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at Grace Lutheran Church in Versailles. Burial will be in Stover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home, Stover.

MESSERSMITH
Richard Allen Messersmith Sr., 61, of Dixon, died June 15, 2004, in the Capital Region Medical Center,  Jefferson City.
Survivors include; his wife, Rita Messersmith, Dixon; his mother, Martha Messersmith, Dixon; two sons, Richard Messersmith Jr. and Jeffrey Messersmith, both of Dixon; one daughter, Tammy Eads, Dixon; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, and 10-11 a.m. on Friday, June 18, in the Long-Gilbert Funeral Home, Dixon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 18, in the Long-Gilbert Funeral Home, Dixon, with Pastor Louis Dunlap, New Salem Baptist Church, Dixon, officiating. Interment will follow in the Wheeler Cemetery, Dixon.

RICE
Donald Lee Rice, 74, of  Jefferson City, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at his residence.
He was born on January 6, 1930, in  Jefferson City, the son of Clark Champ and Nell Louise Sullivan Rice. He was married on October 1, 1953, in  Jefferson City to Lola Irene Hook who survives at the home.
Mr. Rice was a graduate of St. Peter Catholic High School and attended  Jefferson City Junior College. He was employed in earlier years with the News Tribune Publishing Company where he progressed from paperboy to circulation manager; Mulkey & Marshall Furniture Store; Missouri Highway Patrol; and retired as operations manager with the Missouri Secretary of State.
He was a U. S. Army veteran. Mr. Rice was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral; Roy Sone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1003; Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693; and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Other survivors include three sons and their wives, Paul and Sandra Rice, Delray Beach, Florida, Kevin and Caroline Rice,  Jefferson City, and James and Rayna Rice,  Jefferson City; two daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth "Tess" and Danny Trammell, North Kansas City, Mo., and Patricia and Donnie Schwartze,  Jefferson City; 12 grandchildren, Ashley Trammell, Katrina Trammell, Alisha Smith, Megan Smith, Trevor Hickle, Shawna Schwartze, Leanna Schwartze, James Rice, Jeremy Rice, Kenna Weston, Kayla Nilges, and Natalie Rice; and three great-grandchildren, Laine Hickle, McKenna Morales, and Evan Smith. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Kathleen Louise Rice; and a sister, Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Rice.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at St. Joseph Cathedral with the Rev. Ignazio C. Medina officiating. Entombment with full military honors will be in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, 3210 N. Ten Mile Drive,  Jefferson City, MO 65109, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105-1905; or Carmelite Monastery, 2201 W. Main Street,  Jefferson City, MO 65109.

SCHERFF
Hughes T. Scherff, 87, California, Mo., passed away Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Moniteau Care Center in California, Mo.
He was born July 3, 1916 near Jamestown, Mo. the son of Albert J. and Ida Rustin Scherff who preceded him in death. He was married July 3, 1937, in Camdenton, Mo., to Viola Volkart who survives in California, Mo. He attended Jamestown High School and spent most of his life farming near Latham, Mo. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator for Moniteau County Road District. He was a former member of Green Grove Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. He later in 1986 became a member of First Baptist Church, California, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School director and treasurer.
Other survivors include: a son, Ronald Scherff with his wife, Sandra of Steamboat Springs, Colo. ; a grandson, Eric Scherff with his wife, Natividad Scherff-Zamora of Columbia, Mo. ; and a granddaughter, Kirsta Scherff-Norris with her husband, Michael of Colorado Springs, Colo. ; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Cassil and Beulah Gabert and three brothers, Albert Jr., Weaver, and Winston. Services will be held at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. Greg Morrow. Burial will be in California City Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 22, 2004, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church-Puerto Rico Building Fund, 208 S. Oak Street, California, MO 65018 or American Heart Association, P. O. Box 1653, Topeka, KS 66601-1653. Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services in California, Mo.

ATTERBERRY
Johnny Ray Atterberry, age 55, of Kimberling City, died in his home on June 20, 2004, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was the son of the late Osroe Atterberry and the late Mary Agnes Scott Atterberry. He was born October 26, 1948, in Fulton, Mo., where he lived until 1978. He married Kelly Larimore in 1982, who survives the home.
He owned and operated a construction company. He had been in the construction business since 1986. He was a member of the Elks lodge until his illness. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kimberling City.
Other survivors include: Rebecca Ellen Maasen and husband, Brian, of  Jefferson City, Julie Lynn Atterberry of Kimberling City and Zachary Scott Atterberry of Kimberling City; three grandchildren, Kate Lynn Atterberry, Brea Anna Long, and Andrew McGwire Maasen; four sisters and four brothers, Jenean Cuno and husband, Willie, of Rush Hill, Joanna McGregor and husband, Mike of Racine Wisconsin, James "Sonny" Atterberry and wife, Betty, of Fulton, Missouri, Mary Ann Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Wanda Womack of Fulton, Missouri, Billy Atterberry and wife, Cathy, of Fulton, Missouri, Terry "Smokey" Atterberry of Moberly, Missouri, Ricky Atterberry and wife, Donna of Fulton, Missouri. He also has 21 nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service in Kimberling City at the First Baptist Church on Tuesday and a memorial service on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Maupins Funeral Home in Fulton, Missouri. He will be cremated.

BACKES
Adolph H. Backes, age 90, of Loose Creek, Mo., died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the University Hospital, Columbia, Mo.
He was born November 14, 1913, in Loose Creek, Mo., the son of Anton & Agnes (Haslag) Backes, both deceased. He was married October 22, 1936, in  Jefferson City, Mo., to Laura B. Oidtman, who preceded him in death January 20, 2002.
A lifelong area resident, he attended the Immaculate Conception School, Loose Creek, Mo. Mr. Backes owned & operated Hillcrest Service, which he originally opened at Holts Summit, Mo. and later moved to Loose Creek, Mo., where he was in business for over 50 years prior to his retirement.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Loose Creek, Mo., where he had served as a Eucharist Minister and Lector for many years, he was a member of the Legion of Mary; the Silver Haired Legislature; and the Senior Citizens Group of Loose Creek. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed bowling for many years.
Survivors include: two sons and their wives, Theon Charles and Mary Ruth Backes, of Wilmington, N. C., Roger and Theresa Backes of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; two daughters and their husbands, Marge and Jim Baumgartner of  Jefferson City, Mo., Martha and John Kleindienst of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; one brother, Ray Backes of Altadena, Calif. ; three sisters, Sister Antonice Backes, S. S. N. D. of St. Louis, Mo., Louise Volk of Joplin, Mo., and Ann Williams of Loose Creek, Mo. ; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Backes, and by one grandson, Christopher James Baumgartner and five brothers, Herman, Hugo, Martin, Lawrence and Charles Backes.
Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Church, Loose Creek, Mo., where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Joseph Corel as the Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Immaculate Conception Church, Loose Creek, Mo., or to the charity of the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Morton Funeral Home, Linn, Mo.

CALDWELL
Max T. Caldwell, 86, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Royal Oaks Nursing Center.
He was born May 4, 1918, in Bagnell, Mo., the son of Clarence E. and Velma Denny Caldwell. Survivors include: his wife, Lucille Ann, whom he married on April 3, 1951, in Kansas City, Mo. ; two sons, Denny K. Caldwell and Tom C. Caldwell; one brother, Dorsey L. Caldwell; one sister, Dolores Brondel and five grandchildren, Shane M. Caldwell, Nathan J. Caldwell, Stacy M. Caldwell, Tim Caldwell and Nicole Caldwell.
Cremation is scheduled, there will be no local services. A memorial service with Veterans of Foreign Wars military honors will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon, Mo.

CROSS
Alice Faye Cross, 85, of  Jefferson City died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Capital Region Medical Center.
She was born July 14, 1918, in Sapulpa,  Oklahoma, a daughter of Orville Charles and Mayme Brentlinger Clark. She was a 1935 graduate of Sapulpa High School, and graduated from Central State College in Edmund,  Oklahoma in 1939, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1941, she received a Master of Arts degree from the University of  Oklahoma. She was married March 23, 1941 in Sapulpa,  Oklahoma to Dr. Cecil E. Cross, who preceded her in death on January 13, 1996.
She was the Office Manager for Dr. Cecil Cross' dental practice from 1956 until her retirement in 1991. She attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and was active in the American Association of University Women in Slater, Missouri. She was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants; Jane Randolph  Jefferson Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Ohio Genealogical Society; Ann Hawkins Gentry Tent 17 of the Daughters of Union Veterans; the 1918 Club in Kansas City; the Society of Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims; Cole County Historical Society; and the Sapulpa Historical Society. She was also a member of the First Families of Ohio, Missouri Association of Historic Route 66; and the Alden Kindred of America.
She is survived by two sons, Steven Roger Cross of Marietta, Georgia, and Daniel Clark Cross of Sacramento, California. Friends will be received from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Directors -  Jefferson City Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Houser Millard Funeral Directors -  Jefferson City Chapel. Entombment will follow in the Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of HOUSER-MILLARD Funeral Directors, 2613 W. Main, 636-3838.
