Turner, Claude
Claude Turner, 60, of San Bernadino, Calif., formerly of Water Valley, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at his residence.

Services will be Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Green M.B. Church with interment at New Providence M.B. Church in Water Valley. M.J. Edwards Funeral Home has charge.

Turner, born icon Feb. 10, 1942, to the late Clayton Turner and the late Elsie Turner, was a member of Sanders Chapel M.B. Church in Water Valley.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie Shaw of San Diego, Calif., and Phylecia Taylor of San Bernadino, Calif.; two sons, Calvin Turner and Terrial Turner both of Batesville; four brothers, Johnny Turner of Phoenix, Ill., Clayton Turner, Jr. of Flint, Mich., Robert Turner and Lawrence Turner, both of Water Valley; four sisters, Lucille Joseph and Ora Mae Kerr both of Water Valley, Ona Mae Wright and Bernice Willingham both of Davenport, Iowa; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Turner, Otha
Otha Turner, 94, of Senatobia died Thursday, Feb., 27, 2003, in his residence.

Services will be Tuesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at Cistern Hill M.B. Church in Como. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Turner, the husband of the late Ada Turner of Charleston, was a retired farmer, legendary blues fifer and was a life member of Hunter Chapel M.B. Church of Como.

Survivors include six daughters; Betty T. Freeman of Senatobia, Bernice Pratcher of Senatobia, Ada Mae Turner of Senatobia, Dorothy Turner of Senatobia, Nellie T. Momon of Como and a step-daughter, Minnie Brown of Como; two sons, Mac Freeman of Senatobia and Bruce Porter of Como; one brother, Otis Eaven of Canton; 35 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Vanlandingham, Sybil Kathlyn Stone
Sybil Kathlyn Stone Vanlandingham, 87, of Batesville, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Services were Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Lambert cemetery. Rev. Charles Jones and Rev. Jerry Wages officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Vanlandingham, born icon Jan. 22, 1916, to the late John Lenon and the late Lula Jones Stone, was a homemaker and a member of Tutwiler United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Henry Elmer Vanlandingham.

Survivors include one son Roger D. Vanlandingham of Oakland; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Vick, Rose Ross
Rose Ross Vick, 69, of Houston, Texas, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Houston Hospice in Houston, Texas.

Services were Monday at Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial was at Oxford Memorial cemetery in Oxford.

Vick was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church and the Baylor Women's Faculty Club.

Survivors include her husband Robert L. Vick of Houston, Texas; one daughter Suzanne Vick Ryan of Coppell, Texas; her mother Corine Ross of Oxford; one sister Lelia Ross McNickle of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, David E. Ross of Oxford and Stanford Lynn Ross of Jackson and one grandson.

Memorials may be sent to Houston Hospice, 8811 Gaylord, Suite 100, Houston, Texas 77024-2923.

Vowell, Vernon L.
Vernon L. Vowell, 78, of Batesville, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at the Veterans Home in Oxford.

Services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial is at Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Vowell, born icon April 23, 1925, to the late Harvey C. and the late Estelle Massey Vowell, was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the Army where he received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Battle Stars, was a retired quality control foreman for EmHart Corporation of Clarksdale, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville.

Survivors include one daughter Shirley Vowell Burt of Hamilton, Ala.; one son Dennis W. Vowell of Ridgeland; two brothers, Dallas Vowell of Denver, Colo. and Orville Vowell of Grove, Okla.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Vrooman, Albert George Sr.
Albert George Vrooman Sr., 74, died Monday, May 28, at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven.

Funeral services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was at Oakland cemetery. Rev. Gary Burckaki officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Vrooman, born icon Oct. 15, 1928, to the late William Arthur and Mary Williams Vrooman, was a retired Air Force Master Sgt. and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Memphis.

Vrooman was preceded in death by his two brothers, Arthur Vrooman Jr. and Dan Vrooman.

Survivors include three daughters, Lila Vrooman Pantaleo of Miami Beach, Fla., Laura Vrooman Love of Oxford and Linda Vrooman Bozant of Jackson; two sons, Albert George Vrooman Jr. of Joplin, Mo., and William Vrooman of Southaven; two sisters Margaret Vrooman Hood of Scobia and Elizabeth Vrooman Nesselrodt of Lilbourne, Mo., and five grandchildren.

Tyner, James T.
James T. Tyner, 89, of Como, died Jan. 29, 2003, at Methodist North in Memphis, Tenn. of heart failure.

Services were Friday at Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Sardis with interment at Fulmer cemetery. Rev. Robert Smith officiated services. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Tyner, born icon Dec. 13, 1913, to the late J.N. Tyner and the late Esther Tyner was a retired salesman for Youngtown Stores. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include one son, Charles Tyner of Memphis, Tenn.; one brother, Virgil Tyner of Tillatoba; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Jewel Tyner.

Strong, Faye Etta
Faye Etta Strong, 54, of Batesville, died, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart disease.

Services were Saturday at St. Peter's M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial was at Bethlehem cemetery in Sardis. Hodges Funeral Home had charge.

Strong was a nursing assistant.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence P. Strong of Batesville; six daughters, Martha F. Poole, Diana Lee Strong, Brenda K. Strong, Cherry Goodson, Camera R. Strong, and Calandra Strong, all of Batesville; three sons, Eddie Strong, Tommy Strong and Edward Poole, all of Batesville; 11 sisters, Katie Gross, Emma Robinson, Lucinda Briscoe, Josephine Jackson, Mary Shorter and Bonnie Lamar all of Sardis, Della Pratcher of Como, and Clara Bell Henderson of Oxford, Terry Emmoog, Earlia Farmer and Fannie Farmer, all of Milwaukee, Wis.; eight brothers, Robert E. Gross of Memphis, Tenn., James E. Gross, Robert Gross Jr., and George Gross, all of Batesville, Solomon Gross of Nashville, Tenn., Roy Young and Mack Farmer both of Milwaukee, and Dennis James of Sardis and 26 grandchildren.

Sturdevant, Mary Alyce
Mary Alyce Sturdevant, 79, of Clarksdale, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at Quitman County Hospital at Marks of heart disease.

Services are today at 2 p.m. at National Funeral Home. Burial is at Rosemound in Tutwiler. National Funeral Home has charge.

Sturdevant, born icon Nov. 1, 1924, was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and a member of Ladies AUA. of VFW and was a retired sales lady.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence E. Sturdevant of Beaumont, Calif.; three daughters, Angelia Durham and Ashley Sturdevant, both of Clarksdale and Sherry Blanchat of Wichita, Kansas; one son Clyde Matthews of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister Eva Patterson of Sardis; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Sturgis, Leland Hardin
Leland Hardin Sturgis, 85, of Enid, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Tallahatchie General Hospital in Charleston of heart failure.

Services were Monday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Enid. Burial was at Mt. Pisgah cemetery. Rev. Ray Legge, Rev. Howard Armstrong and Rev. Marty Evans officiated. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Sturgis, born icon July 29, 1917, to the late Ely Nolan Sturgis and the late Minnie Moore Sturgis was a retired hog farmer and construction foreman, a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, a member of Tallahatchie Company Hospital Board, a member of Mississippi Animal Health Board, President of the Tallahatchie County Fair and Northwest Mississippi Livestock Board.

Survivors include his wife Margaret Deese Sturgis of Enid; two sons, Roger Sturgis and Tommy Sturgis both of Enid; two daughters, Nina Mabus of Oakland and Lee Dell Sturgis of Enid; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Tallahatchie General Hospital in Charleston.

Swigart, Nehemiah "Nick"
Nehemiah Swigart, 39, died at 2:40 a.m. Jan. 18, 2003, in a car fire near Oxford.

Memorial Services were at the Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. Re., Chuck Nicholson officiated. Private burial of ashes were at Oakwood cemetery in Macomb. Memorial services will be held also Saturday Feb. 1, at the Blackjack Presbyterian Church in Sardis. Family requests memorials be made to the Baptist Memorial Hospital of Northern Mississippi.

He was born icon on March 1, 1963, to Eldon and Dorothy Hollis Swigart. He was a carpenter for Flint Co. in Oxford and was a member of a Methodist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy White of Galesburg, Ill.; one son, Nehemiah "Bryant" Swigart of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Lyndon Swigart of rural Macomb; one sister, Cheryl Jenkins of Peoria, Ill.; two nieces, Breann Swigart and Brittany Marr; two nephews, Dustin Swigart of Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and Austin Jenkins of Pekin, Ill. He was preceded in death by his father Eldon Swigart and his grandparents.
