Walter D. Melton, 70, of Water Valley, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North Mississippi in Oxford of heart failure.

Services were Friday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Forrest Memorial Park. Tim McCoy officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Melton, born icon May 20, 1933, to the late Egar Melton and the late Leona Austin Melton, was a Baptist and a retired baker for Wonder Bread of 25 years.

Survivors include his wife Jean Duffy Melton of Water Valley; one daughter Pam Melton Shelton of Benton, Wa.; two sons, Ricky Melton of Willow, Alaska and Jerry Melton of Grand Junction, Colo.; one brother Gene Melton of Rockford, Ill.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Montgomery, Marvis
Marvis Montgomery, 83, of Batesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. at Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Rev. Steve Nichols, Rev. Dean Harris and Rev. J.V. Mills will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Eastover Memorial cemetery in Oxford.

Montgomery was a retired machine operator with Kimberly-Clark and a member of McGregor Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Montgomery of Batesville; two daughters, Loretta Flowers of Batesville and Myrtle Loyce Montgomery, residence unknown; one son, Robert Herschel Montgomery of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Van Lamar Montgomery of Savannah, Tenn. and Rob Roy Montgomery of Senatobia; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Monteith, James Ray
James Ray Monteith, 79, of Memphis, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Methodist Hospital-Central in Memphis of heart failure.

Services were Monday at Dickins Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville. Burial was at Batesville Magnolia cemetery. Dean C.B. Baker officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Monteith, born icon July 21, 1923, to the late Rowan Marshall Monteith and the late Claire Sparks Monteith, was a real estate developer, a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral of Memphis, Tenn., a member of the Home Builders Association of Memphis, Shriner, Advisory Board of MIFA's Lunch and Learn and attended Southern Law School.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Carter Monteith of Memphis, Tenn. and one sister Eloise Fitts of Auburn, Ala.

Memorials may be sent to St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral/MIFA, 692 Popular, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Moore, Fannie
Fannie Moore, 67, of Batesville, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the University Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were Thursday at Water Valley Civic Auditorium in Water Valley. Burial was at New Providence M.B. Church cemetery. Water Valley Funeral Home had charge.

Moore, was a member of New Providence M.B. Church in Water Valley.

Survivors include her father James Woodard of Batesville; four daughters, Mary Egerson of Batesville, Shirley Moore of Jackson, Brenda Moore of Atlanta, Ga. and Teresa Dowsing of Batesville; three sons, Larry Moore of Jackson, Clifton Moore of Batesville and Rayford Moore of Batesville; one step-daughter Faye Gillard of Water Valley; two sisters, Ruby Dandridge of Coldwater and Maggie Beaver of Oxford and one brother Dallas Bishop of Batesville.

Moore, Leo
Leo Moore, 61, of Water Valley, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford of natural causes.

Visitation is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Services are Sunday at Water Valley Civic Auditorium. Burial is at Oak Ridge cemetery. Rev. Amos Sims will officiate. Water Valley Funeral Home had charge.

Moore, born icon Feb. 16, 1942, was a tool and die maker.

Survivors include his wife Frances Moore; two daughters, Linda Armstead of Granada Hill, Calif., Angela Macfarland of Lancaster, Calif. and son Leonard Moore of San Diego, Calif.

Morgan, Elizabeth Geneva
Elizabeth Geneva Morgan, 76, of Pope, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Jackson Oaks Assisted Living in Jackson of heart failure.

Services were Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Magnolia cemetery in Batesville. Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiated.

Morgan, born icon July 31, 1927, to the late Walter and the late Minnie Mae Milner Doyle, was a homemaker and a member of Pope Baptist Church. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Williams of Winn, Ark. and Joyce Morgan Gremels of Jackson, Tenn.; one step-daughter Charlotte Morgan Papp of Flint, Mich.; three sons, Wally Morgan of Batesville, Bobby Sweat of Brownsville, Tenn. and Howard Sweat of Jackson, Tenn.; four sisters, Judy Sweat Arnold, Ruby Sweat McGage, Mabel Sweat Latch and Barbara Sweat Jaynes, all of Jackson, Tenn.; two brothers, Jimmy Sweat of Bells, Tenn. and Larry Sweat of Jackson, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Morgan, Vessie Irene
Vessie Irene Morgan, 98, of Greenwood, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Golden Age Inc.

Services were Sunday at Dickins Chapel. Burial was at Magnolia cemetery in Batesville. Rev. David Waits officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Morgan, born icon May 24, 1905, to the late Lonnie Brewer and the late Emma Hendrix Brewer, was a sales clerk at Dry Good Store and a member of Crowder Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by one brother Calvin Brewer and one sister Bernie Dees.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to Batesville Magnolia cemetery, P.O. Box 302, Batesville, Miss. 38606.

Morgan, Willie Mathis
Willie Mathis Morgan, 98, of Water Valley, died Tuesday, September 9, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford.

Services were Saturday at Pleasant Green M.B. Church in Water Valley. Burial was at the church cemetery. Hodges Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include his wife Ioda Morgan of Water Valley; four daughters, Lena Mae Marshall of Utica, Ola Faye Morgan of Milwaukee, Wis., Carlene Rogers of Memphis and Gladys Hunt of Millington; three sons, Miller Rubert Morgan of Water Valley, Thomas Morgan and Willie Morgan Jr., both of Milwaukee, Wis.; one sister Myrtle Bishop of Water Valley; 27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.

Morgan, Willie A. "Jab"

Willie A. Morgan, 82, of Batesville, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services were held Monday at Macedonia M.B. Church in Batesville. Burial was at Second Concord cemetery in Batesville. Rev. J.A. Wilson officiated. Cooley's Mortuary had charge.

Morgan, a retired farmer, was born icon Oct. 21, 1921, to Little Auther Morgan and Safornia Lee Jones. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Second Concord M.B. Church in Batesville.

Survivors include his wife Julean Morgan of Batesville; eight sons, Willie James Morgan of Sardis, Ernest J. Morgan and Rayford Morgan of Marreo, La., Henry Morgan, Curtis Morgan and Eddie Morgan, all of Memphis, Tenn., Eddie Thornton of Courtland and Charlie Thornton of Batesville; seven daughters, Clara Thornton, Irene Thornton, Sarah A. Chriss, Carrie Morgan and Barbara Morgan, all of Memphis, Tenn., Martha Mae Jones of Lambert and Levern Morgan of Marks; and 70 grandchildren.

Mothershed, Jessie James Jr.
Jessie James Mothershed Jr., 75, of Sardis, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the residence of his sister of heart failure.

Services were Saturday at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Union Baptist cemetery. Hal Johnson officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Mothershed, born icon June 23, 1928, to the late J.C. Johnson and the late Monty Goodwin Johnson and Jessie J. Mothershed Sr., was a retired employee of Henry T. Smith and Sons and a member of The Baptist Church.

Survivors include his two sisters, Katherine Oglesby of Sardis and Etta M. Brock of Hoover, Ala.

Navalany, Clara Crook
Clara Crook Navalany, 98, died Thursday, Jan.27, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare in Southaven, of heart failure.

Services were Monday at the Family Funeral Care Stage Road in Memphis, Tenn., with interment at Memory Hill Garden also in Memphis, Tenn.

Navalany was the widow of Anthony Joseph Navalany of Memphis, Tenn. She was a homemaker, a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, and a former member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Memphis, Tenn.

Navalany was born icon June 29, 1904, in Tennessee to the late Earnest Lee and Addie Karr Crook.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Jacobsen of Jacksonville, Fla. and Brenda Jean Navalany of Texas; one sister, Mary Katherin Vaughn of Hernando; one brother, Andrew M. Crook of Memphis, Tenn.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Neel, Charles Andrew
Charles Andrew Neel, 85, of Batesville, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. in Winterhaven, Fla. Burial will be at Lakeside Memorial Park in Winterhaven, Fla. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Neel, born icon June 28, 1918, to the late Bertle Homer and the late Lilia Bell Folden Neel, was a retired inspector for Philco Ford and served the United States Army in WWII.

Survivors include one daughter Cynthia Neel Vogel of Richland; one son Gerald L. Ransom of Bartow, Fla.; two sisters, Jewel Neel Russell of Connersville, Ind. and Louise Neel Kelsing of Van Nuys, Calif.; two brothers, Dale Neel and Winters Neel, both of Connersville, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren
