Maymie "Mama Jo" Roberts

CANTON -- Maymie "Mama Jo" Roberts, 56, a claims clerk at a Ridgeland store, died of cancer Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held last Thursday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Canton with interment in Montgomery cemetery in Madison.

A lifelong Madison County resident, Mrs. Roberts was a member of Old Madison Presbyterian Church in Canton. She worked as a claims clerk at Wal-Mart in Ridgeland.

Survivors include her son, Hedmond Roberts of Canton; daughter, Bonnie Roberts Owens of Canton; mother, Julia Pearson of Jackson; sister, Joy Pearson Phillips of Wesson; and two grandchildren.

Lillie G. Holden

LENA -- Lillie G. Holden, 82, a homemaker, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, of cancer at her home.

Services were held Saturday at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with interment in the Canton cemetery.

A Madison County native, Mrs. Holden had lived in Canton until she moved to Lena six year ago. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Ernest Russell Holden, who died in 1962.

Survivors include her husband, Sam L. Holden Sr. of Lena; son, Sam Holden Jr. of Forest; daughters, Mary Jewel Parker of Pelahatchie and Bonnie Howard of Lena; brothers, Marvin Goolsby and Andy Goolsby, both of Brandon, Raymond Goolsby of Clinton and the Rev. Robert Goolsby of Janice; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Betty Ward Weber

MADISON -- Mrs. Betty Ward Weber, 64, a retired church bookkeeper, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, of cancer at her home in Madison.

Services were held Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Madison with interment in Glenwood cemetery in Yazoo City. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street in Jackson handled arrangements.

A Rochester, Minn., native, Mrs. Weber was a graduate of Central High School and Mississippi University for Women. She was an avid bridge player and gardener, those who knew her said. She was a bookkeeper in the office of St. Peter's Catholic Cathedral for more than 20 years. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Her daughters said she was a devoted and loving mother. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Weber, in 1977.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Weber of Madison; daughters, Angela Robinson of Madison, Becky Parnell of Coppell, Texas, and Sharon Meyer of Missouri City, Texas; son, David Weber of Carthage; brothers, Eddie Ward of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Tommy Ward of Jackson; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Mississippi or the Building Fund of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Madison.

Martha Elizabeth Avery Powell

MADISON -- Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Avery Powell, 78, a homemaker, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, of heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Saturday from the Chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with interment in Parkway Memorial cemetery.

A Biloxi native, Mrs. Powell attended Delta State University. She had been married icon to William E. Powell for 56 years last December. She had been a resident of Starkville for 50 years before moving to Madison three years ago. She was a member of and a past matron of the Eastern Star. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison.

Survivors included her husband, William E. Powell; and daughter, Nancy Powell Huggs, both of Madison.

Glenn Eva Hines Chadwick

MADISON -- Glenn Eva Hines Chadwick, 82, a homemaker and retired interior designer, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, of heart failure at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held Monday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home with interment in Lakewood Memorial Park.

A Jackson native, Mrs. Chadwick was a longtime member of Capitol Street United Methodist Church and more recently of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church. A 1934 graduate of Central High School, she received an advanced degree in interior design from the College of Arts and Decoration of New York City in 1945. From 1937 until 1949, she worked as an interior designer for Batte Furniture Co. of Jackson.

A gifted hostess, for many years she planned statewide teas at the Governor's Mansion as a member of the Official Mississippi Women's Club. She was a blue ribbon floral arranger, recipient of numerous prizes and awards from the Jackson Council of Garden Clubs and a past president of the Alta-Raymond Garden Club. Active in her community, she was past president of the Lester Elementary School PTA and a member of the Forest Hill chapter of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, sports and politics, those who knew her said.

"I remember how every holiday and family occasion was celebrated with beautiful flowers throughout our homes on Raymond Road and Alta Wood Boulevard, " said her daughter, Dorothy Chadwick King of Madison, on her mother's love of floral arrangements and home furnishings, which she added inspired her to become a professional interior designer. "Mother would spend weeks preparing for Christmas, giving great attention to color schemes, table patterns, food and other decorations both inside and outside the house. She won numerous citywide awards for her Christmas door displays. It was truly a gift to grow up in a home with such a talented, artistic and loving mother."

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Chadwick Lamar of Oxford, Annie Chadwick of New York, N.Y., and Dorothy Chadwick King of Madison; son, Dr. Vernon David Chadwick Jr. of Oxford; brothers, Dr. Merrill O. Hines of New Orleans, La., and J. Herman Hines of Clovis, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alta-Raymond Garden Club, 2217 Oakhurst Drive, Jackson, MS 39204; or Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, 305 N. Congress Street, Jackson, MS 39201.

Martha Sipple Hastings

RIDGELAND -- Martha Sipple Hastings, 84, a homemaker, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, of pneumonia at Manhattan Health Care in Jackson.

A memorial service was held Saturday at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Cocoa, Fla. Mark E. Seepe Funeral Directors and Crematorium of Jackson handled arrangements.

A Baltimore, Md., native, Mrs. Hastings and her husband of 57 years, the late Robert Hastings, had lived in Cocoa, where they were active communicates of St. Marks Episcopal Church. In 1996, they moved to Ridgeland to be near their son.

Survivors include her sons, Robert Hastings Jr. of Baltimore, Md., and Roger Hastings of Ridgeland; daughters, Martha Leeper of Alliance, Neb., and Margaret Guzman of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 4 Church Street, Cocoa, FL 32922, or the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

William Aston Covington

MADISON -- William Aston Covington, 73, a retired bank executive, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, of cancer at his home in Madison County.

Services were held last Thursday at Chapel of the Cross in Mannsdale with interment in the Magnolia cemetery in Magnolia. Hartman Funeral Home of McComb handled arrangements.

Mr. Covington was a veteran of World War II. He was a sergeant of the 231st chemical depot company and served in Okinawa. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the Louisiana State University School of Banking. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.

He began his banking career in Jackson in 1958 and retired in 1984. He was a member of Chapel of the Cross and served on the vestry and in many other capacities. He was involved in numerous civic and community organizations and in other capacities with the Episcopal church.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy; daughters, Gal C. Craig of Birmingham, Ala., and Gusta C .Stanford of Jackson; sister, Jean C. Bulloch of Metairie, La.; and five grandchildren, Heather C. Land, Ian Craig, Rebecca Craig, Emily Stanford and Matthew Stanford.

Walker Rufus Sims

RIDGELAND -- Walker Rufus Sims, 78, a retired welder and carpenter, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, of a heart attack at his home in Ridgeland.

Services were held Friday at First Baptist Church in Madison with interment in the Natchez Trace cemetery in Madison. Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.

An Attala County native, Mr. Sims had moved to Ridgeland 15 years ago. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison and a veteran of the U.S. Navy from World War II. His hobbies included hunting and building swings and rocking chairs, those who knew him said.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Galdys Sims of Ridgeland; sons, Billy Walker Sims of Brandon and Sammy Joe Sims of Mesquite, Texas; daughters, Bobbie Nell Sims Ramsey of Crosby, Texas, and Kathy Sims Jones and Terri Sims Martin, both of Madison; brothers, Everette Sims of Greenville and Clarence Sims of Vicksburg; sister, Mrs. Willie Self of Greenville; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Madison, P.O. Box 400, Madison, MS 39130.

Howard G. Camp, 2nd

RIDGELAND -- Howard G. Camp, 2nd, 56, a city informations systems manager, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, of cardiac arrest at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at the Jackson Yacht Club. Mark E. Seepe Funeral Directors of Jackson handled arrangements.

A Little Rock, Ark., native, Mr. Camp was a longtime resident of Jackson and a graduate of Murrah High School and the University of Mississippi. An avid musician and accomplished drummer, Mr. Camp had performed with numerous bands in the Jackson area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Army Band from 1968 until 1971.

A Ridgeland resident, he was employed with the city as an informations systems manager. He was a former communicant of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, where he participated in the parish choir.

Mr. Camp was an avid yachtsman and member of the Jackson Yacht Club. He participated in numerous regattas and off shore races and served as the club's official score keeper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jere P. and Willa Cage Camp.

Survivors include three generations of cousins.

Doyle Wayne Tagert

CANTON -- Doyle Wayne Tagert, 54, died July 4, 1999, at University Medical Center in Jackson following an extended illness.

Services were held July 6 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest with the Rev. R.C. Rice officiating and interment in Rehobeth Baptist cemetery in Pelahatchie.

Mr. Tagert had been a Canton resident for four years, formerly living in the Leesburg community for most of his life. He was a member of the Eastside Pelahatchie Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Lee Franklin, Willie Henry Shoemaker, Buddy Shoemaker, Bobby Parker, Oley Harrell and Jay Boykin. Walter Smith was an honorary pallbearer.

Survivors include his special friend, Patricia King of Canton; daughter, Katina White of Pelahatchie; son, Mitchell Tagert of Pelahatchie; sisters, Dorothy Allen of Brandon, Beverly Henry of Brandon and Ola Mae McNeese of Iuka; brother, Sidney Tagert of Pelahatchie; seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Bobbie Bryant King

CANTON -- Bobbie Bryant King, 70, an office manager, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, of heart failure at her home in Canton.

Services were held Sunday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland with interment in Canton City cemetery.

A Simpson County native, Mrs. King had lived in Canton the past six years. She worked as an office manager for Barnes Truck Lines the past 20 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She enjoyed yard work, reading, cooking and taking care of others, those who knew her said.

She was a sitter for the elderly for a number of years and was known for her love of gospel music. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Shelby F. Bryant.

Survivors include her husband, Glen Ray King of Canton; daughters, Brenda Lampkin of Canton and Trudi Gordon of Byram; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy A. Peacock

RIDGELAND -- Roy A. Peacock, 87, a retired self-employed carpenter, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, of cancer at Whispering Pines Hospice in Ridgeland.

Services were held July 6 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Pearl with interment in Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson.

A Webster County native, Mr. Peacock moved to Pearl in 1938. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Pearl and John P. Byrd Lodge No. 623. He was also a member of Local Carpenters Union Local 303.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eddie Peacock, and a son, Scarcy Peacock.

Survivors include his sons, Allen D. Peacock of Dallas, Texas, Sammie M. Peacock of Brandon and Gary Peacock of Pearl; daughter, Helen Johnston of Jackson; sister, Willie Ray of Helena, Ark.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Mississippi, 450 Town Center Boulevard, Ridgeland, MS 39157, or to a favorite charity.
