Myrtle Buie

Myrtle Buie, 93, of Meadville, died Oct. 29, 2009, at Silver Cross Nursing Home.

Visitation is 5 to 9 tonight at Concord Baptist Church on Bogue Chitto Road, then 9 a.m. Saturday until services at the church at 11 a.m. The Rev. Tony Mullins, the Rev. James Case and the Rev. Frank J. Smith will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery. Brookhaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Buie was born Aug. 29, 1916, in McComb, to Edward L. Jetmore Sr. and Rebecca Byrd Jetmore.

She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Mrs. Buie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John A. Buie; two sons, John E. and Jack D. Buie; a son-in-law, Roger Smith; four grandsons, Billy Joe Carwyle, John E. Buie II, Dale Smith and Randall Calhoun; a sister, Mary V. Jones; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Juanita “Dee Die” Smith of Brookhaven, Margie Estes Carwyle of Meadville and Sue Whittington and her husband Jackie of Gloster; two daughters-in-law, Margaret Buie and Peggy Buie, both of Meadville; a brother, Edward L. Jetmore Jr. of Cherry Valley, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Ginny and Mike Furr, Andy Smith, Ronnie and Pam Carwyle, Ken and Lisa Carwyle, Sissy and Wayne Johnston, Marlon and Shelia Calhoun, Debra Magee, Becky and Jody Barton, Justin and Tammy Dawson, Tina and Benji Holland, and J.P. Whittington; 31 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren, five nephews, three nieces and a host of extended friends and family.

Pallbearers are Justin Smith, Ronny Carwyle, Ken Carwyle and Marlon Calhoun.

Polie D. Stewart Jr.

Polie Douglas Stewart Jr., 84, of Magnolia, died Dec. 9, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb, with Masonic and Order of the Eastern Star services at 7 p.m. Visitation resumes at 10 a.m. Friday until services at 11 at Jones. The Rev. Woody Rimes and Bro. James Sanders will officiate. Burial will be in Wilson Plantation Cemetery in Amite County.

Mr. Stewart was born July 22, 1925, in Port Authur, Texas. He was the son of the late Lois Wilson and Polie Stewart Sr.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of McComb, and a firm believer in Jesus Christ. He was a retired pipe fitter in Baton Rouge, Local No. 198, and a Merchant Marine in World War II. He was a member of the Osyka Masonic Lodge No. 198, and Mayflower Chapter No. 148, Order of Eastern Star, Osyka. He was a member of the Miss-Lou Daylily Association and was an avid hunter and gardener. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Larry Douglas, John Paul and Kenneth Ray Stewart; and a brother, Conway Stewart.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Emma Blanche Durham Stewart; two daughters and sons-in-law,, Jane and Charles McDaniel of Port Allen, La., and Jean and David Porter of Ninole, Hawaii; two sons, Jamie Stewart of Hattiesburg and David Stewart of the Terry’s Creek community; a brother, James L. Stewart of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Betty Jo Newman of Nederland, Texas. and R-Meta Coble of Gillsburg; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Chris and Cyndi Vergona.

Pallbearers are Michael Porter, Charles McDaniel, Rickie Robertson, Todd Newman, Mark Stewart, Scott Stewart, Darin Newman, Dwayne Newman, Derek Stewart and Jerry Vann.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Son Valley or Camp Sunshine.

Dianne B. Magee

Dianne B. Magee, 49, of Magnolia, died Dec. 2, 2009, at her residence, after a sudden illness.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Craft Funeral Home in McComb. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Burton Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Magnolia, with Elder Austin Dillon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.Mrs. Magee was born Dec. 24, 1959, in New Orleans. She was the daughter of Samella Burton Hurst of Magnolia.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Magee was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elder Sam and Inez Burton.

Survivors include a son, Terry R. Burton of McComb; her mother, Samella; sister, Shirley Hurst of Milwaukee; three brothers, Robert Burton of Fayetteville, N.C., George Hurst of Milwaukee and Rochell Hurst of Magnolia; her husband, Earl Magee of Magnolia; a grandchild; and a devoted friend, Charlie Carter of LaPlace, La.

Janice M. Bridges

Jancie M. Bridges, 52, of McComb, died Dec. 5, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Young’s Funeral Home in Summit. Services are noon Saturday at Little Rock Baptist Church on McComb-Holmesville Road, with the Rev. Gerald Matthews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Bridges was born Jan. 31, 1957, in McComb. She was the daughter of A.C. Cowart and Lucille Craft, both of McComb.

She joined Little Rock Baptist Church at an early age and was a faithful member until her health failed. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She was well known for shopping and playing bingo.

Mrs. Bridges was preceded in death by her grandparents, David and Elva Matthews and Arie Smith; a brother, Albert C. Cowart; and a nephew, D’Marion Duncan.

Survivors include her parents; husband, Melvin Bridges of McComb; daughter and son-in-law, Shameria Spann and David of Summit; stepson, Donel Jackson of Summit; seven brothers and three sisters-in-law, Eugene Craft and Sampson Cowart, both of McComb, Larry Craft of San Diego, Donald Cowart of Prentiss, Albert and Shelia Cowart of Lafayette, La., Willie and Carla Alexander of Madison and Isaac and Patsy Cowart of Kenner, La.; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Rhonda Craft, and Judy and Isaac Marsalis, all of McComb, Ruby Jean and Frank Tate and Arie Jean and Willie Magee, all of Summit; four grandchildren, Sedrick Tate Jr., D’Ajuan Tate, Shamyia Spann and Ayana Spann, all of Summit; three special nephews she raised, Rodney, Derrick and Jeffery Craft, all of McComb; special nieces, Shavoney and Shantel Matthews, both of McComb; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Thelma Anderson, Febie Tate, Freddie Neal and her church family.

Elmer Earl

Elmer Earl, 33, of McComb, died Dec. 8, 2009, in Bogalusa, La.

Arrangements are incomplete with Craft Funeral Home in McComb in charge.

Martha Johnston

Martha Johnston, 69, of McComb, died Dec. 9, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete with Catchings Funeral Home of McComb in charge.

Cheryl Ann Prather

Cheryl Ann Prather, 54, of Summit, died Dec. 10, 2009, at her residence.

Visitation will be at noon Saturday at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb, until memorial services there at 2 p.m.

William E. Brownell

William E. Brownell of Summit died Dec.10, 2009.

Arrangements are incomplete at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb.

Billy L. Wilkinson

Billy Lamar Wilkinson, 74, of Fluker, La., died Dec. 5, 2009. Visitation continued today until 1 p.m. services at McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home in Amite, La. Burial was in Roberts Cemetery in Osyka.

Mr. Wilkinson was born June 7, 1941, in McComb. He was the son of William H. “Willie” Wilkinson, also known as “Paw Paw Wilk,” and Eva Mae Sanders.

He was the owner of Ronald’s Welding and Machine Shop in Fluker. His family said he was a very caring and generous man who had an abundant love for his children and grandchildren. He was especially cared for by Beverly Stewart of Osyka.

Mr. Wilkinson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara Darlene Bryan Wilkinson; and his stepfather, Stanley Sanders.

Survivors include two daughters, Ginger Darlene Gaskin and husband Geoffrey of Newnan, Ga., and Misty Rae Nichols and husband Josh of St. Clairsville, Ohio; two sons, Patrick Shane Wilkinson and wife April of Fluker and Benjamin David Wilkinson of Kentwood, La.; two sisters, Barbara Jo Williamson of Collins and Brenda Rollinson and husband James of Summit; a brother, Thomas Merle Wilkinson and wife Donna of McComb; and six grandchildren, Jordan, Kadence, Owen, Isabella, Gracie and Adalena.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Zeigler, Rudy Landry, Doug Gardner, Don Kent, Eric Kent, Benji McNabb, Audie Braase and Walter Doty.

The family requests memorial donations be sent to Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, P.O .Box 4196, Monroe, LA 71211.

Otis Simmons

Otis Simmons, 91, of Osyka, died Dec. 8, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.

Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb, with family hour from 6 to 7. Visitation continues noon Saturday at Shady Grove Baptist Church until services there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Bertrand Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Simmons was born Nov. 25, 1918, in Pike County. His adoptive parents were J. Nathaniel and Rosa Simmons. His birth parents were Luther and Georgia Simmons Miller.

He was a retired longshoreman and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his adoptive and birth parents; a son, Arthur Otis Simmons; daughter-in-law, Sharon Simmons; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mannie and Lena Hilbert.

Survivors include his wife, Arniter Hilbert Simmons of Osyka; four daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline and Billy R. Magee of Nashville, Mildred and Jack L. Garner of Atlanta, Steffie and Charles Edward Patterson of Rochester, N.Y., and Wavis Knight and Johnnie Leslie Jr. of Jackson; a son, Charles Edward Simmons of Osyka; two daughters-in-law, Ethel Pearl and Rose Simmons, both of Osyka; 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and a host of devoted cousins, other relatives and friends.

Rosemary C. Young

Rosemary Carr Young, 60, of Smithdale, died Dec. 7, 2009, at the Cardiovascular Institute of Mississippi in McComb.

Visitation is 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Young’s Funeral Home in Summit, then 10 a.m. Saturday at Brown’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Smithdale, until services there at 3 p.m. The Rev. Skipper Cain will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Young was born April 21, 1949, in Pike County.

She was the daughter of Elisha and Lula Mae Eubanks Carr of Pike County.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Amyteen Young; two brothers, Charles Young and Elisha Carr Jr.; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Young; and one brother-in-law, L.C. Johnson.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Melvin Young Sr. of Smithdale; three sons, Melvin Young Jr. and wife Juanita of Summit, Henry Young and Jay Edward Carr, both of Smithdale; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Linda and Jewel Matthews, and Clementine and Bobby Young, all of McComb, Joan Bates and Lornell, Virginia and Greg Thompson, Selina Carr and Tina and Jeff Peavy, all of Smithdale; a son-in-law, Lee Edward Weathersby of Smithdale; a devoted former daughter-in-law, Linda Young of Liberty; 25 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Carr and Virginia of McComb, and John Lee and Joyce Carr of New Orleans; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty and Jimmy Vick of Smithdale and Brenda K. Johnson of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
