Mrs. Thelma G. Nowell

Monday, September 22, 2003

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Thelma G. Nowell, 91, will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at Kosciusko City Cemetery. The Rev. Barry Corbett will officiate. Visitation will at noon the day of the service at Culpepper Funeral Home in Kosciusko.

An Attala County native, Mrs. Nowell was the retired owner of Nowell's Grocery Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Nowell died Monday, September 22, 2003 at her home in Kosciusko.

Survivors include two daughters, Janette Nowell of Kosciusko and Betty Richardson of Louisville; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Drew Chandler, Craig Richardson, Daniel Yarbrough Jr. , Willie Goss and Howard Luce.

Arrangements are being handled by Culpepper Funeral Home of Kosciusko.

Mrs. Elvira Crawford Watkins

Funeral services for Mrs. Elvira Crawford Watkins, 95, were held at 1 p. m. Friday, September 19, 2003 at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Dekalb. The Rev. Wayne Bass officiated.

A resident of Dekalb, Mrs. Watkins was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. She married Hubert Watkins.

Survivors include two sons, Jack H. Watkins of Mequan, Wisc. , and Jarvis Watkins of Milwaukee, Wisc. ; one daughter, Alma M. Kirk of Dekalb; two sisters, Myrtha Overstreet of Cleveland, Ohio, and Lillian McGinnis of Attwater, Calif. ; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by Hampton Funeral Home of Louisville.

Mrs. Gertrude Hathorn Cole

Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Hathorn Cole, 74, were held at 1 p. m. Saturday, October 18, 2003 at Mt. Pleasant #2 M. B. Church in Noxapater. The Rev. Curtis Johnson officiated.

A native of Winston County, Mrs. Cole was a member of Mt. Pleasant #2 M. B. Church in Noxapater, where she served as a deaconess, home missionary member and usher. She married Albert Cole, Sr. Mrs. Cole died Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Winston County Nursing Home.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Cole Sr. ; two daughters, Maxine Cole Lyon of Noxapater and Charlene Cole of Denton, Texas; two sons, Albert Cole Jr. of Louisville and Robert E. Cole of Columbus, Ohio; twelve children and six great grandchildren.

Hampton Funeral Home of Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnnie Travis Hill

Funeral services for Mr. Johnnie Travis Hill, 86, were held at 2 p. m. Monday, October 20, 2003 at First United Methodist Church in Louisville. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville.

A native of Winston County, Mr. Hill was retired from work with the D. L. Fair Lumber Company and later for the Georgia Pacific Company as a forestry procurement officer for the Crosset Division. He was educated in the Ellison Ridge schools and graduated from East Central Community Collge. He joined the Army in World War II and served as a sergeant in the 904th Infantry, a part of the 79th Division in the European Theatre. A member of First United Methodist Church, having served as Sunday school superintendent, administrative board member and two-time member of the building committee, Mr. Hill was also an officer in the Winston County Christian Friends and chairman of the Louisville-Winston County Chamber of Commerce Forestry Committee and one of the founding board members of Winston Academy. He was a member of the Mississippi Manufactureres Association, the legislative committee of the Mississippi AARP and a past president of the Woodmen of the World jurisdiction of Mississippi. Mr. Hill died Friday, October 17, 2003 at aWinston Medical center in Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, France Young Hill of Louisville; one daughter, Lea-Ann Denton of Meridian and three granddaughters, Natalie, jessica and madelyn of Meridian.

Pallbearers were Mark Dillard, Hal Hanna, Rush Hembree, Brian Mills, Ken Mills, Kevin Mills, Kevin Mills, Chris Moore and Keith Webb and Quintus Earl Webb.

Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Clark, Dave Fair, Davis Fair, Bennie Hill, Bobby McKay, Hal Overstreet and the Wrinkled Roosters.

Nowell-Tilghman Funeral Home of Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Leo Jarvis

Funeral services for Mr. Leo Jarvis, 79, were held Monday, October 20, 2003 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Dr. Robert Duhs and the Rev. Tim Muse officiated. Burial followed in Brandon Memorial Gardens.

A native of Kemper County and a Rankin County resident, Mr. Jarvis was a World War II Navy veteran and a career employee of Southern Natural Gas. He was a member of Brandonn Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder Emeritus, a former president of the Lions Club and a member of the Brandon Methodist Bridge Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Rose Jarvis of Brandon; two daughters, Vivien Jarvis Moore of Brandon and Melba Jarvis Whitaker of Lakeland, Fla. ; one son, Wendell Jarvis of Vicksburg; two sisters, Cleo Gully of Preston and Bobbie Jean Creekmore of Huntsville, Ala. ; one brother, Robert J. Jarvis of Pearl, and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jim Gilmore, John Richard McArthur, Charles Moak, Nat Whitten, Robert May and Gary Morrison.

Memorials may be made to Reformed Theological Seminary, 5422 Clinton Blvd. , Jackson, MS 39209.

Arrangements were made by Ott and Lee Funeral Home of Brandon.

Mrs. Ethel Smyth Day

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Smyth Day, 91, were held at 3 p. m. Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville.

A native of Louisville, Mrs. Day was a retired legal secretary for the law firm of Strong-Smith. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and while living in New Orleans worked for Oschner's Clinic, part of that time as Administrator of the Board Exams for orthopedic surgery throughout the United States. She lived in Seattle with her husband Truman Day before moving back to Louisville in the 1950s, where Truman raised cattle for many years. Mrs. Day died Monday, October 20, 2003 at Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville.

Survivors include many cousins. She had especially close ties to Dr. Patrick Smith of Jackson and David McCool of Louisville, who were in charge of her later affairs.

Mr. John P. Leone

Tuesday, October 21, 2003

Funeral services for Mr. John P. Leone, 62, were held at 11 a. m. Friday, October 24, 2003 at South Louisville Baptist Church. The Rev. Rob Faulk and Scott Vaughn officiated. Burial followed in Shiloh Baptist Cemetery.

A resident of Louisville, Mr. Leone was the owner of Lee Tractor Company and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He died Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at Winston Medical Center in Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, Jann Lee Leone of Louisville; three sons, John Brian Leone and wife Brenda and Jay Patrick Leone, both of Louisville, and Jackie Phil Leone and wife Karen of Holden, La. ; six sisters, Verna Leone, Edna Leone and Wanda Sue Leone, all of Many, La. , Clara Sepulvado of Zwolle, La. , Lucille Procell of Hemphill, Texas, and Mary Bailey of Henderson, Nev. ; three brothers, Joseph W. Leone of Las Vegas, Nev. , William S. Leone of Henderson, Nev. , and Simon H. Leone of Shreveport, La. ; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Gully, Rodney Leone, Wes Leone, Tony Thomas, Tim Smith and John Wallace.

Honorary pallbearers were Patrick Leone, Justin Leone, Lynn Leone, Corey Stanton and Brian Jauch.

Mr. Grady P. Reed

Tuesday, October 21, 2003

Funeral services for Mr. Grady P. Reed, 85, were held at 2 p. m. Thursday, October 23, 2003 at Harmony Baptist Church in Winston County. The Rev. Tommy Jones and the Rev. Jerry Lundy officiated. Burial followed in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Winston County.

A resident of Louisville, Mr. Reed was a farmer and a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He died Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at his residence in Louisville.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Reed and Mitchell Reed, both of Louisville; one sister, Thelma Ruth Slawson of Louisville and two grandchildren, Marsha davis and Natherin Reed, both of Louisville.

Pallbearers were David Chambliss, Scott Gregory, Barry Holloway, Benny Luke, Billy Quinn and Joel Slawson.

Nowell-Tilghman Funeral Home of Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

Captain Clarence E. "Pete" Castle

Thursday, October 23, 2003

Funeral services for Captain Clarence E. "Pete" Castle, 79, were held at 2 p. m. Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Nowell-Tilghman Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Lee Castle offciated. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville.

A Louisville resident, Capt. Castle was a retired pilot in the United States Air Force. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. Capt. Castle played football for the Ole Miss Rebels and was drafter by the Pittsburgh Steelers, but chose instead to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. Later in his Air Force career, he was considered for the first astronaut program. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Louisville. Capt. Castle died Thursday, October 23, 2003 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Jackson.

Survivors include three daughters, Victoria L. Purvis of Lexington, Ky. , Valerie J. Castle of Edwards and Michele L. Norris of Gainsville, Ga.

Pallbearers were Tom Purvis, Bollen Banks, Jerason Banks, Richard Castle, Ben Castle and Ken Norris.

Nowell-Tilghman Funeral Home of Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

Jackie Kyle

Mr. Jackie Wayne Kyle, age 69, of Columbus, died October 23, 2003 at his residence in Columbus.

Graveside services were held October 27, 2003 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Rev. James Gardner officiating. Mr. Kyle was a native of Ackerman, MS and the son of the late Henry A. and Lannie Burdine Kyle. He was a truck driver for 40 years, driving for Brookshire's Dairy, Mississippi Freight and the Commercial Dispatch. He also drove a cab for the 500-600 Cab Company for 20 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson Billy Jack Kyle. Survivors include one son Wayne Kyle of Columbus, two daughters, Rhonda Courtney and her husband Bradley of Caledonia, and Beverly Elaine Sahami and her husband Fred of Eldorado Hills, CA; one brother Wilbur A. Kyle of Starkville, MS; two sisters, Pearline Baxter of Ackerman, and Nadine Hobbs of Texas; Grandchildren, Kierra Kyle, Marlee Courtney, Perry Sahami, Shireen Sahami, and Joey Filarski. Pallbearers were Wayne Kyle, Brad Courtney, Jeff Turner, Bobby Bowen.

Memorials may be made St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101.

Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. George Wayne Roberts

Graveside funeral services for Mr. George Wayne Roberts, 59, were held at 3 p. m. Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Welcome Chapel Church Cemetery. The Rev. Eddie Agnew officiated. Burial followed in Welcome Chapel Church Cemetery.

A native of Louisiana, Mr. Roberts was a resident of Jackson and a self-employed plumber. Mr. Roberts died Friday, October 24, 2003 at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Dempsey Roberts of Jackson; three daughters, Tonya Roberts and Dawn Bryant, both of Jackson, and Jessie Bryant of Louisville; three sisters, Ernestine Roberts of Monroe, La. , Annie Roberts of Phoenix, Ariz. , and Dean Deveroe of Washington; three brothers, Mark Roberts and Roy Humphrey, both of Little Rock, Ark. , and Clayton Humphrey of Monroe, La. , and five grandchildren.

Porter Funeral Home of Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cramer Katherine Hunt

Funeral services for Mrs. Cramer Katherine Hunt, 84, were held at 2 p. m. Monday, October 27, 2003 at Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Ackerman. Burial followed in Sturgis Cemetery.

A native of Choctaw County, Mrs. Hunt was a homemaker. She was a member of Sturgis Baptist Church. Mrs. Hunt died Saturday, October 25, 2003 at Choctaw County Nursing Home in Ackerman.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Hunt of Sturgis; one daughter, Patsy Dreyer of Mesa, Ariz; five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman.

Mrs. Nellie B. Joiner

Saturday, October 25, 2003

Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie B. Joiner, 87, were held at 2 p. m. Sunday, October 26, 2003 at McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel in Philadelphia. The Rev. Mike Ingram and the Rev. Bobby Joe Butler officiated. Burial followed in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Noxapater.

A native of Winston County, Mrs. Joiner was a homemaker and a resident of Noxapater. She was a member of Noxapater United Methodist Church. Mrs. Joiner died Saturday, October 25, 2003 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian.

Survivors include two daughters, Iva Nell Atkinson of Philadelphia and Charlene Joiner Shumaker of Canton; five sons, Travis Joiner, Wayne Joiner and Bennie Mac Joiner, all of Louisville, and Alvis Joiner and Charles "Bo" Joiner, both of Philadelphia; one sister, Odean Moore Jones of Noxapater; 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bill Baskin, Joe Baskin, Bob Baskin, Dwight Moore, Jonathan Peeples and Scott Cheatham.

Arrangements were made by McClain-Hays Funeral Home of Philadelphia.
