MASTER LEROY McKINNEY, 9-year-old son of Marlis Smith and Darlene McKinney of Memphis, student at Gordon Elementary School, died Jan. 16 at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center. Services were held Jan. 24 at Brown Baptist Church with burial in New Park Memorial Gardens. Family Mortuary had charge. He also leaves six sisters, Rachel McKinney, Marlinda McKinney, Pam McKinney, LaQuita McKinney, Barbie Jean Smith and Markeisha Smith; four brothers, Randy McKinney, Toney McKinney, Marcelus Macklin and Rico Smith, and his grandparents, Bobie Smith of Horn Lake, and N. R. Smith and Sarah McKinney, both of Memphis.

GEORGE T. MEDFORD, 70, of Paducah, Ky., formerly of Millington, retired manager for Food Giant and former Millington postal worker, died Jan. 18 in Paducah. Services were held Jan. 22 at Northridge/Woodhaven Chapel in Millington with burial in Northridge/Woodhaven Cemetery there. He was a Navy Reserve veteran, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Baptist. He leaves a daughter, Paige Lewis Smith of Olive Branch; a son, George Medford of Millington; two brothers, James Medford of Memphis and Robert K. Medford of Millington, and three grandchildren.

MICHAEL MYERS, 43, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 14 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. Services were held Jan. 21 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Red Banks, with burial in the church cemetery there. Serenity Funeral Home in Holly Springs had charge. He was a member of St. Matthews Church. He leaves four sons, Laterrio Myers of Memphis, and Lorenzo Myers, Cedric Myers and Dedrick Myers, all of Byhalia; four sisters, Vivian Burton, Vanessa Burton, Dwyanda Burton and Lisa Burton, and two brothers, Eddie Myers and Dexter Burton, all of Holly Springs, and four grandchildren.

ROBERT MILTON NELSON, 76, of Byhalia, boiler maker, died Jan. 21 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville. Graveside services were held Jan. 24 at Surretts Cemetery in Arkabutla. Hernando Funeral Home had charge. He was a Baptist. Mr. Nelson, the widower of Elizabeth Nelson, leaves a daughter, Tellecia Maharrey of Byhalia; a son, Danny Nelson of Memphis; a brother, Ernie Jean Nelson of Olive Branch, seven grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

STEVE O’HARA, 60, of Bolivar, industrial electronic engineer for Dover Elevators for 15 years, employee of Dynametal in Brownsville and teacher for Tennessee Technology Center, died Jan. 21 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Services were held Jan. 24 at Shackelford Funeral Home in Bolivar with burial in Parran’s Chapel Cemetery in Bolivar. He was a former district leader of the Boy Scouts, Cubmaster of the Cub Scouts, assistant scout leader of Webelos for more than 20 years, served in the Navy for 21 years and was a Vietnam veteran. Mr. O’Hara leaves his wife, Carolyn Ann O’Hara; a daughter, Candice Spence of Germantown; two sons, John O’Hara of Hernando, and Michael O’Hara of Cordova; his mother, Virginia O’Hara of Hemet, Calif.; a sister, Pat Keane of Sun City, Fla., and three grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society.

BETTY JEAN OLIVER, 71, of Hernando, former shipping and receiving clerk for Green Duck Corp. in Hernando, died Jan. 19 at Methodist Healthcare-University Hospital. Services were held Jan. 22 at Hernando Funeral Home with burial in Baker’s Chapel Cemetery in Hernando. She was a member of Baker’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Oliver, the widow of James Perry Oliver, leaves three daughters, Hettie Lee Barnes of Nesbit, Mary Loyce Oliver of Hernando and Debbie Chaney of Lake Cormorant; two sons, Earl Oliver and Jerry Oliver, both of Hernando; three sisters, Jewel Harris of Grand Junction, Tenn., and Kitty Dale Moore and Ellouie Van Zant, both of Hernando; three brothers, Ernest Johnston of Coldwater, and James Johnston and Steve Johnston, both of Hernando, eight grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

PATRICK, 77, of Southaven, retired truck driver for Cardox Liquid Air Co. in Woodstock, Tenn., and owner/ operator of Patricks Electronics and Tanning Beds, died Jan. 19 at Methodist Healthcare-South. Services were held Jan. 23 at Forest Hill Funeral Home South with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery South. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, a former Golden Gloves champion and a member of Southland Baptist Church. Mr. Patrick leaves his wife of 58 years, Helen Patrick; three daughters, Cheryl Hall of Southaven, Pam Lincoln of San Antonio and Judy Stump of Horn Lake; a son, Mike Patrick of Cordova; a sister, Melrine Roleson of Memphis; three brothers, Thomas Patrick of Sardis, and Louis Patrick and Bill Patrick, both of Memphis, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 21 at Independent Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with burial in Memorial Park. Memorial Park Funeral Home had charge. She was a former member of the American and Memphis rose societies. Mrs. Powell, the widow of Louis B. Powell, leaves a daughter, Janice P. Kilpatrick of Byhalia; a sister, Martha Agneta of Memphis, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Independent Presbyterian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Services were held Jan. 15 at Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home in Somerville with burial in Fayette County Memorial Park there. He was a Baptist. Mr. Pruitt leaves his wife, Sylvia Noles Pruitt; two sons, Andy Pruitt of Brownsville, Tenn., and Brian Pruitt of Byhalia; three sister, Gracie Travis of Hartselle, Ala., Louis Adkins of San Antonio and Margaret Kaiser of Birmingham; two brothers, James Pruitt of Victoria, and Billy Pruitt of Falkville, Ala., five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Epilepsy Foundation of West Tennessee.

Mrs. Scruggs, the widow of Wade Banks Scruggs, leaves a daughter, Pamela Scruggs of Hernando; two sisters, Agnes Cook of Holly Springs, and Daisy Gaines of Millington, and three grandchildren.

JAMES HASSEL WALLACE, 66, of Olive Branch, retired from Orgill Brothers after 47 years, died Jan. 25 at his home. Services were held Jan. 27 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch with burial in Blocker Cemetery. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of Maples Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Wallace leaves his wife of 48 years, Barbara A. Wallace; two sons, Michael K. Wallace of Olive Branch and James B. ‘Bru’ Wallace of Atlanta; three sisters, Melba Philen of Bridge City, Texas, Helen Patrick of Olive Branch and Peggy Williams of Eudora; seven brothers, Max Wallace, Maurice Wallace, Wayne Wallace, Johnny Wallace, Larry Wallace and Tommy Wallace, all of Olive Branch, and Billy Wallace of Memphis, and a grandson. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Mrs. Wells leaves her husband, Terry Lee Wells; two daughters, Rachel Meter of Southaven and April Wells of Walnut; her mother, Kay Gunn of Walnut; three sisters, Amy Carmichiel of Corinth, and Jeannie Mills and Sara Mills, both of Walnut; and a brother, Jeff Gunn, and her grandmother, Iris Stinson, both of Walnut.

JOYCE McCALL WHITTINGTON, 75, of Memphis, formerly of Southaven, retired nursing supervisor and former public health nurse for Memphis & Shelby County Health Department, died Jan. 15 at St. Peter Villa. Graveside services were held Jan. 18 in Memorial Park. Memorial Park Funeral Home had charge. She was a Presbyterian, attended Arkansas State College and St. Mary College, and was a graduate of Saint Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka, Kan. She leaves a daughter, Jenny Whittington Kaemmerer of Midlothian, Texas; two sons, Tom Whittington of Memphis and J. J. Whittington IV of Phoenix; two sisters, Katherine Light of Horn Lake and Mary Sue Shirley of Palm Coast, Fla.; two brothers, Harry McCall of Memphis and Herbert McCall of Horn Lake, and four grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Mrs. Akers, the wife of Ralph Akers, also leaves a son, Richard Alexander Akers of Southaven; her mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Hal C. Cooper of Millbrook, Ala.; a sister, Karen Marie Hamilton of Hernando, and a brother, Hal Blair Wayne Cooper of Millbrook.

MILBURN D. ‘BUDDY’ AVERY JR., 73, of Memphis, retired customer service representative for Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division, died May 30 at Methodist University Hospital. He was a member of Longstreet United Methodist Church, a member and former chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a volunteer firefighter for Whitehaven Fire Department. Mr. Avery leaves his wife of 51 years, Carrie L. Avery; two daughters, Donna A. Peedin of Columbus, Ohio, and Kim Avery of Memphis; a son, Steven F. Avery of Horn Lake; a brother, Lee Avery of Memphis, and three grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Longstreet United Methodist Church.
