Mrs. W. F. Akin, Dies Suddenly

We regret to hear that Mrs. Alice Hobson Akin died suddenly at her home here in Aberdeen last Friday. While her health had not been good for some months, she was apparently in her usual health until shortly before the end came early Fridny morning. Her children and their families had been with her during the holidays, and were enroute to their homes when the sad news was conveyed to them of her sudden death. She is survived by the husband, three sons; CAPT. A. T. AKIN, Detroit, Michigan; CORN. W. E. AKIN, JR., stationed at Pensacola, Fla., and GARLAND H. AKIN, Dallas, Texas; three sisters. MRS. MAGGIE CARTER, Washington, D. C.; MRS. HENRY COBURN, Greenwood, Miss., and MRS. FRED DAGGETT, West Point; and many other relatives. Serving as pallbearers: E E. COSNAHAN, J. B. ELIXSON, W.C. FOWLER, S. A. HARRIS, WALTER DARRACOTT and W. C. GRIFFIN.

ANGLE

ABERDEEN PEOPLE ARE VICTIMS OF TORNADO IN LOUISIANA
Aberdeen people who have seen two tornadoes visit our city in recent years, were apprehensive last Sunday afternoon and Monday, as the clouds looked "squally." However, the storms did not come hearer than New Albany, and points in Tennessee. We did get a downpour of rain, lasting all day Monday, and until Midnight. A total or 4.62 inches of rain fell in a 24 hour period. Both Buttahatchie and Tombighee Rivers are out of their banks, Tuesday, and rising rapidly. However, the ravages of. the storm did reach Aberdeen, indirectly, a former resident of our city, Mr. R. L. ANGLE and 'two sons were killed by a tornado near Shreveport, La., and his 'wife badly hurt. The storm occurred Sunday afternoon about 1 o'clock, Mr. ANGLE and his two sons, HARLESS, age 10, and CARVEN age 4, being killed almost instantly. The bodies were brought to Aberdeen, and funeral services will be held at Liberty Church' at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 15. Rev. C. W. THOMPSON, officiating. Mrs. ANGLE was critically injured, and four other children suffered serious injuries. Mr. Angle leaves, besides his wife and children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. W. ANGLE, of Aberdeen, four sisters, Mrs. W. 0. (Wot) TAYLOR, Virginia, OLEAN and NELL ANGLE, and two brothers, QUITMAN and J. P. ANGLE, all of Aberdeen. Mr. Angle's, cousins served as pall bearers. (Nov 11, 1948) JOHN WALTER BROWN, Services For Father of 14 Children Were Held Tuesday

The funeral of JOHN WALTER BROWN, 75 Year, old citizen of Hamilton, Miss were held at 11 a. rn. last Tues. at the home of his daughter and son In law Mr. & Mrs. CARROLTON RAE of route one and Mrs. That city. Mr. BROWN died at 7:3 A. M. yesterday. He leaves 11 sons----C. H. and ERNEST of Leland; L. A. of Mellbourne, Fla, P. F. of Port Arthur, Texas, A. L., OTHEL and ELMER, CALEDONIA, J. W. of Opelika; C. G. of Greenville; CLAUDE of Houston Texas, CHARLIE of the Army stationed at Charleston, SC and CARL of Hamilton;. three daughters; Mrs. L. C. RAE, Hamilton, Mrs. LILY MAE SIMPSON, Port Arthur; Texas and Mrs. MYRTLE COLE; San Antonio, Teens and a. number of grandchildren. Burial was at the Pierce Mill cemetery, 7 miles southeast of Hamilton, Ala., in charge of Gunter Funeral home. Active pall bearers will be six of his sons; -L.A., P.F., A.L., J.W.,E..J. and C. G. Brown. Honorary pall bearers will be his grandsons, H. F. Brown, C. H. Brown, L. E. Brown, H. M. Brown and E. J. Martin. Serving on the flower committee will be his granddaughters: Miss Mettle Ray Wells, Miss Johnnie Mae Brown, Miss Maxine Ray, Miss Allie Faye Brown, Miss Annie Mae Brown and Mrs. Irene Clark.

BYRD

Little Girt Dies (Dec 11, 1952)

Death ended the Illness of Little ELIZABETH ANN BYRD early Monday morning at her home in Aberdeen. She was the two year old daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Albert Lee Byrd. They were blessed with her presence in a happy home, but realize she has gone to a happier home to add another little bud to God's bouquet. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of Lann & Carter Funeral Horne at 2:00 P. M. with the Rev. C. w. Thompson officiating, Interment followed in Odd Fellows Rest cemetery. She leaves in addition to her mother and father, the following survivors, two sisters Mary Sue and Linda Frances Byrd; two brothers, Bobby Albert and William Lee Byrd. Maternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Munn, Greenwood Springs, Miss. Paternal grandfather: W. C. 'Byrd of Aberdeen, Miss. Serving as pallbearers were: -Grover Fairchild, Gen Hardin, J. D. Munn and Sale Randle.

CANTRELL
Mr. J. H. Cantrell (Feb 28, 1952)
Mr. James Henry Cantrell, age 74, passed away Sunday night, Feb. 24, 1952 at the Monroe County Clinic. Mr. Cantrell a life time resident of Monroe County was a farmer and a member of Mt. Hebron Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Cantrell preceded her husband in death about ten years ago. Services were held from Gruhb Springs Church, Feb. 26th at 2 P. M. with Rev. Fairchild officiating, assisted by Rev. Grady McWhirter of Amory. Survivors are three daughters: Mrs. C. C. McDaniel, Tuscaloosa, Ala, Mrs. Jack McKay, Caledonia, Miss and Mrs. Raymond Long, Quincy; four sons, I. F. Cantrell, of Hamilton, Miss.: I. A. Cantrell, Aberdeen; I. W. Cantrell, Quincy, and C. I. Cantrell C Korea. Arrangements were under the direction or Lann & Carter Funeral home.

COOPER
RITES TO BE AT ABERDEEN THIS AFTERNOON AT 3 (June 8, 1952)

ABERDEEN, Miss., June 7
Services for Mrs. ELIZABETH MILLIGAN COOPER, who died Friday, will be held at the First Baptist Church Sunday at 3 p. m. The Rev. C. W. Thompson will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Paul Snellgrove of Columbus, Miss. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Rest with Lann and Carter Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Cooper, who was 90, leaves three sons, Robert Cooper and Theron Cooper of Aberdeen and Carl L. Cooper of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Jim Milligan of Columbus and Claude Milligan of Aberdeen, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

COOPER
Services for Rassey S. Cooper, (1952) who died suddenly at his home on Friday, December 26th -were held at the New Hope Christian church Saturday at 3.00 o'clock with the Rev. C. W. Thompson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Cooper, who was 67, had been in ill health for several years. He was a veteran of World War 1 and was employed in defense work during world War II. He engaged in farming for a number of years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. BETTIE PIERCE COOPER; three daughters, Mrs. W. M. Ames, Jr., of Macon, Miss., Mrs. R. F. Davis, of Zion, Ill, and Miss Annie Belle Cooper of Aberdeen; -three sons, Torn H. Cooper of Camp Chaffee,Ark, Robert Earl and Rassey S. Cooper, Jr., or Aberdeen; five grandchildren; a brother, Cleve Cooper of Houston, Miss., a half-sister and several half-brothers.
Members of Daniel W. Bird Legion Poet No. 26 served as pallbearers.

Harrison Funeral borne was in charge or arrangements.

CORBELL

MRS. BULAH CORBELL (1953)

Services for Mrs. Dulah Corbell, who died at the Monroe County Clinic early Thursday,July 16th, were held at the DePriest Freewill Baptist Church at 8 o'clock Friday afternoon with the Rev. K. I. Tucker officiating. Burial was in the Lockhart cemetery. Mrs. Corbell who was 58, was born icon at Sulligent, Alabama and had resided in Aberdeen for the
past six years She was the widow or Jack Corbel who died three years ago and was a member of the Aberdeen First Methodist Church. She leaves, three children, Mrs. Virginia Corbell, Walter, Miss; Merrial Corbel and James Corbell, all of Aberdeen; one. Grandchild; two sisters; Mrs. Ralph Robinson of Jackson, Tenn, and Mrs.W. F. Coleman of Hamilton, Miss., and three brothers, James D. Rooks of Caledonia, Miss., William E. Rooks of North Chicago, Ill. and Pascal F. Rooks of Greensboro. N. C. Serving as pallbearers were; W.F. Coleman, Bruce West, Torn Corbell, Emmett Corbell, Ralph Robinson and Billie Boone. Harrison Funeral Home was In charge of arrangements.

CRAIG
YORK CRAIG DIES IN MEMPIS HOSPITAL (Aug 16, 1952)
Aberdeen Resident Formerly served in Navy Aberdeen, Miss., Aug. 15 – Services will he held Sunday at 5 for York Craig who died Thursday at Kennedy General Hosptial in Memphis following an illness several months. He was 52. Services will be held at Lann and Carter Funeral with burial in Odd Fellows Rest. Mr. Craig was a petty officer in the Nary during Wend War II and was a grocer here after the war. A Methodist, Mr. Craig was born icon in Plantersville, Miss, and resided in Memphis for a number of years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Frances Whitaker Craig; one son, York Craig Jr.; his father S. B. Craig of Oxford, Miss. And Memphis and two sisters; Mrs. J. A. Pondrom Jr. of Dallas and Mrs. William Gordon Reed of Boston.

CROSBY
Mr. Willie Cosby (Nov. 8, 1951)
We retreat to hear of the death of Mr. Willie Cosby, of Hamilton, who passed away at his home Monday, Oct 29th, after a lengthy illness At the age or 65 years. Mr. Crosby was a farmer, born icon and reared in Monroe County. Funeral services were held from the Center Hill Baptist Church, Hamilton, Oct. 31st, at 2 P.M., with Rev. Grady McWhirter of Arnory Miss officiating. Interment in Church cemetery. Survivors: wife, Mrs. Lenora Cosby; three - sisters: Mrs. Zula Freernan, Columbus Miss - Mrs. Leonia Hill, Aberdeen, Miss and Mrs. Myrtle Westbrook, Caledonia, Miss.; two brothers: Mr. L. Y. Cosby, Hamilton and Compton Coby, Waukelia. Ill. Pallbearers: Clove Neal, M. V. Nix, Ivy B. Coleman, Herbert Westbrooks, Earl Foster Smith and James D. Smith. Arrangements under the direction of Lann & Carter Funeral home.

EMORY
WILLIAM DEWEY EMORY (1952)
Funeral services were held for William Dewey Emory, Dec. 24, from the Chapel of Lann & Carter Funeral Home. The Rev. Martin H. Day officiated. Interment followed in Odd Fellows Rent Mr. Emory was 54 years of age and had lived his entire life in Monroe County, lie passed away very suddenly about 9 o'clock Tuesday night, Dec.23 after having worked all that day. For the past thirty years he has been employed by Bradley Lumber Company and was yard foreman for the company at the time of his passing. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. W. D. Emory: five daughters: Mrs. J. C. Harbor, Miss Ruth Emory, Mrs. Helen Burroughs, Betty Joe Emory and Dennis Ann Emory all of Aberdeen; father: Mr. William J. Emory: two sisters: Mrs. Jeanette Northington, Winfield, Ala. and Mrs. Katie Ritter, Smithville, Miss; three brothers; A. Kellis Emory, Gordon Emory of St. Louis, Mo., and Austin Emory, Fulton, Miss.; one grandson Sea ly Burroughs. Serving as pallbearers- were Luther Jackson, Gordon Vines, Quinton Thompson, Ralph Bradley, Floyd Bradley and W. C. Luebke.
Arrangements were under the direction of Lann & Carter Funeral home.

MRS. SELENA FLIPPO

Mrs. Selena Corrine Flippo, age 82 years passed away Feb. 13, 1952, after a lengthy illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tom CANTRELL of Quincy, Miss. Mrs. Flippo was born icon and reared in Monroe County. She was a Charter Member of Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church. Services were held from Cockerham cemetery feb. 14th, at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. C.F. Stewart officiating, assisted by Rev. PERKINS. Survivors: Three daughters, Mrs. J. F. ISBELL, Mrs. Claude WALTERS, and Mrs. Tom Cantrell, all of Quincy, Miss.; one son, W. G. Flippo, Coffeeville, Miss.; one sister, Mrs. Riley EASTER, Greenwood Springs, Miss.; one brother, S.V. FUNDERBURK, Aberdeen, Miss.; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Serving Mrs. Flippo as pallbearers were; LEROY CANTRELL, FOWLER WALTERS, C. W. WALTERS, DAVID LEE WALTERS, JAMES OLLIE ISBELL and ERBY FLIPPO. Arrangements were under the direction of Lann & Carter Funeral Home.

MILLS
MAYE MacDONALD MILLS
-- Thur April 17, (no year) Native of Aberdeen dies in Charlotte, N. C. Funeral service were held Sunday at Charlotte, N. C. for Mrs. H.M. MILLS, the former Miss Maye MacDONALD of Aberdeen. Mrs. MILLS had been ill for several years and unconscious for a year. She died on April 10 at a Charlotte hospital. She is survived by three sons, Harry M. MILLS, Jr., John MacDonald MILLS and Joel R. MILLS; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Mills SHULTS; a sister, Mrs. Granville SYKES, Jr. of Jackson, MS and a brother, James MacDONALD of Baltimore, MD.

MURFF
17 March 1955- Funeral Services Held For W.C. MURFF

Services for W.C. MURFF, who lived near Aberdeen, were held at 3 p. m. Sunday at New Prospect Baptist church with the Rev. J.F. HARTLEY and the Rev. Copper HARTLEY officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Lann Memorial Funeral Home in charge. He was 91. Mr. MURFF died at 11:10 a.m. Saturday at the home of his son, Woody W. MURFF, Aberdeen, Route 2, following an illness of two and a half months. He was a retired farmer and lifelong Monroe County residence. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist church. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. W. M. BOURLAND of Starkville, Mrs. Hughey SEELY of Hamilton and Mrs. David RODGERS of Aberdeen; a son Woody MURFF; nine grandchildren, eight great grand children and one great grandchild.

MURPHREE

Mrs. Murphree Dies At Monroe Clinic. Mrs. Rebecca Clayton MURPHREE, 85, a resident of the Wren Community, died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Monroe County Clinic. She was the grandmother of Dr. Leroy MURPHREE of Aberdeen. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wren resbyterian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

MURPHREE

Services For Mrs. Murphree In Aberdeen (April 18, 1974)
Services for Mrs. Nona Ruth Dilliard Murphee, 53, were held Monday at 11OO a.m. in First Presbyterian Church of Aberdeen. Rev. C,E, Pickens of Bastrop, Louisiana, officiated assisted by Rev. Ted Land of Ireland, Mississippi. Burial was in Wren cemetery with Lann Memorial of Aberdeen In charge of arrangements. Mrs. Murphee died suddenly of a heart attack at her home late Saturday afternoon. She was a native of Toccopola. In l94O she moved to Memphis, and in 1942 married icon Dr. L.R, Murphree. They moved to Aberdeen In 1943. Mrs. Murphree was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a long-time
member of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron. She had served as president of the Present Day League and the Aberdeen Garden Club and was a charter member of the Tombigbee Federation of Fashion Women. Survivors include her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Pat Ireland of Hartford, Connecticut; Mrs. Ginger Tyler of Jackson, Mississippi; Miss Mona Murphree a student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville; her mother Mrs. Needham Dilliard of Memphis and Toccopola; two sisters, Mrs. Ted Shrader and Mrs. Rubel Tutor of Memphis; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Joe Prowell, Earl Morris, Chester COSBY, Dr. Chester Wells, Julius Dahlem, Robert Murphree, Paul Dickens and Bill McGee.

MYATT

Mrs. Myatt

Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie J. MYATT of Wren were held at Pickle Funeral Home in Amory Saturday with the Rev. Dan MORTON officiating. Burial was in Greenbriar cemetery at Beeker. Mrs. MYATT, 88, died at noon March 27 at Gilmore Sanitarium in Amory. She had suffered a stroke the preceding day at the home of her son, Johnny MYATT, with whom she lived. She had been in failing health for two years. In addition to her son, Mrs. MYATT leaves a daughter, Mrs. Lelus NASH of Hot Springs, Ark; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers were her nephews.

Benton Greenwood MYATT, 81-year - old Becker farmer, died at his home Sunday afternoon after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Monday at the Myatt Home, with the Rev. John F. MEASELLS officiating. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery in Amory with Pickle Funeral in charge. Mr. MYATT, a Monroe County native and resident of Becker for 55 ears, was a deacon in the Athens Baptist Church. He leaves his wife; three daughters, Ellie, Mary Catherine, and Vera MYATT, all of Becker.

William NAIL, 72 year-old retired carpenter, died Tuesday night at his home at Grubb Springs after a heart attack.
A life long resident of Monroe County, he was a veteran of World War I.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church witht he Rev. Homer CANTRELL officiating. Burial will be in Lockhart cemetery near Gattman under the direction of Lann Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. NAIL leaves his wife, Mrs. Sarah Williams NAIL, and one nephew, Frank NAIL of Gattman.
Pallbearers will be Will PENNINGTON, Otis STRAWBRIDGE, Bert PENNINGTON, James WHITAKER, Harwood PENNINGTON and Clinton SCOTT.

NANCE
R. L. NANCE (1965?) Ripley Merchant For 64 Years Dies at Age 94.

RIPLEY, Miss (Special) - - Services for ROBERT LEE NANCE 97, Ripley merchant for 64 years and a widely-known Baptist Church leader, were set at 2 p.m. today at Nance Funeral Home. NANCE died early Sunday at the Tippah County Hospital here. NANCE served as chairman of the board of deacons of the Ripley Baptist Church for many years. During his early career, he taught school and served as county treasurer, a post which no longer exists. He and his wife, Mrs. Ethel NANCE, recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. He was a Mason for more than 50 years and was a Woodman of the World. He leaves his wife, a son, Carl NANCE of Ripley; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence DAY of Marks, Mrs. J. Cash KING of Memphis and Mrs. Oscar SHANNON of Ripley; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
