Gertrude James McCallum

Gertrude James McCallum, 87, of Holly Springs, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., died Feb 2, 2007. She was the widow of W.T. McCallum, her husband of more than 60 years. She was a member of Emory Independent Methodist Church in Byhalia and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 5 at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. Burial was in Memphis Memory Gardens cemetery.

She leaves three sons, W.T. McCallum Jr., James T. (Buddy) McCallum, both of Memphis, Tenn., Stephen A. McCallum of Heber Springs, Ark.; her brother, Joe James of Williston, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made to Emory Independent Methodist Church of Byhalia.

Walter E. Owens

Walter E. Owens, 89, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 4, 2007 at Graceland Nursing Home in Oxford. He was the widower of Mary Ann Feathers Owens. He was a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church and an employee of Wonder Products.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 6 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Bro. Frank Feathers officiated.

He leaves a son, Roger Owens of Coldwater; three daughters, Evie Jean Hunter of Holly Springs, Margaret Culver of Waterford, Kathy Nelms of Corinth; two brothers, Hubert Owens of Jasper, Tenn., Travis Owens of Texas; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughters Shirley Ford, Vickie Owens and Dorothy Owens.

Mary Willie Reaves

Mary Willie Reaves, 80, of Ashland, died Jan. 30, 2007 at her home. She was a church mother.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 3 at St. Luke Church of God in Christ in Ashland, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Elder Nathaniel Holleman officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Deloris Walker of Marion, Ark., Gail Reaves of Ashland, Pearlie Norwood of Holly Springs, Bernice Brown of New York, N.Y.; three sons, Levi Taylor, Mark Reaves, both of Ashland, Freddie Reaves of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters; three brothers; 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ray Turner, Tavares Reaves, Roosevelt Reaves Jr., Sam Evans, Levi Taylor and Rodney Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Timothy Reaves, Mark Reaves, Martavis Reaves, Freddie Reaves, Levi Taylor and Shawtel Reaves.

Nancy Lewis Rhew

Nancy Lewis Rhew, 67, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 5, 2007. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Holly Springs and a licensed social worker with NE Community Services. She was a charter member and president of Marshall County Crime Stoppers.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 8 at the Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Butler cemetery in Potts Camp.

She leaves her husband of 49 years, Joe C. Rhew; a daughter, Terri Jackson of Holly Springs; two brothers, Ronnie Lewis of Holly Springs, Sammy Lewis of Ashland; and a sister, Gayle Jordan of Ashland.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Jean Lewis, a son, Michael Rhew and grandchildren Hailey and Bailey Rhew.

Pallbearers are Mitch Tomlinson Jr., Kevin Thomas, Chuck Thomas, Jay Hurdle, Sam Hurdle, Danny Hurdle, John David Strickland, and Tracy Shaw. Honorary pallbearers are David Sorrell, Milton Bell, Eddie Lafever, Kenny Dickerson, Larry Hall, Elijah Wilson, William Foster and Jeff Monroe.

Phillip Clifton Smith

Phillip Clifton Smtih, 47, of Byhalia, died Jan. 30, 2007 at his home. He was a Baptist and a clerk at Schnucks.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memphis Memory Gardens in Bartlett, Tenn.

He leaves his parents, James and Billie Smith of Byhalia; his companion of 25 years, Arnold Graeber of Byhalia; three brothers, Steven M. Smith of Byhalia, Kenneth T. Smith of Brunswick, Ga., Ernest P. Smith of Byhalia; and a sister, Tamara Lynn Smith of Byhalia.

Bernice Echols Totten

Bernice Echols Totten, 85, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 31, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Napoleon Totten. She was a member of Shady Grove CME Church in Chulahoma, a missionary, a stewardess, church treasurer, member of Mississippi Supervisors Association and supervisor of District 4 from 1974-1988.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Rust College Doxey Auditorium. Burial was in Shady Grove CME Church cemetery. Rev. C. Shelton Greer officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Mildred Mitchell of Holly Springs, Martha Totten Jamison of Memphis, Tenn.; seven sons, Othell Totten, Adell Totten Sr., Robert H. Totten, Mack C. Totten, all of Memphis, Tenn., Bertrial Totten, Landon Totten, both of Holly Springs, Napoleon Totten Jr. of Olive Branch; a brother, Olive Echols of Memphis, Tenn.; 54 grandchildren 70 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by children Willie P. Totten, Francis Totten, Malcolm Totten and Murray Totten.

Pallbearers were Bertrial Totten Jr., Ronnie Totten, Jaefis N. Totten, Detric Jamison, Kelvin Douglas Jamison, Dwight E. Mitchell Jr., Eric Totten and Keith Trailer. Honorary pallbearers were Othell Totten Sr., Mack C. Totten, Landon Totten, Napoleon Totten Jr., Bertrial Totten Sr., Adell Totten Sr., Robert Totten II and Dwight E. Mitchell Sr.

Grady Lamar Waddle

Grady Lamar Waddle, 54, of Mt. Pleasant, died Feb. 2, 2007 at his home. He was a Baptist, a carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 5 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Carey Chapel cemetery.

He leaves his wife, Sissy Parker Waddle; two sons, Jason Waddle of Moscow, Tenn., Brian Waddle of Independence; his mother, Margaret Waddle of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, George Waddle of Holly Springs, Jimmy Waddle of Potts Camp; five sisters, Betty McCarver of Independence, Sandra West of Potts Camp, Scarlett Nichols of Potts Camp, Shenia Rhodes of Mt. Pleasant, Carolyn Inmon of Potts Camp; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Zack Waddle; and brother, Donnie Waddle.

Lurline Warren

Lurline Warren, 86, of Los Angeles, Calif., formerly of Byhalia, died Jan. 25, 2007 at her home. She operated the Warren Grocery for more than 50 years and was a retired seamstress.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Isaac Chapel CME Church in Byhalia, where she was a member. Burial was in Warren Family cemetery in Byhalia. Rev. Willie Ward officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves eight sisters, Celestine Taylor, Minnie B. Johnson, both of Cleveland, Ohio, Lena Nobumoto, Velma Spencer, Freddie Muse, Maxine McJimpson, Elaine Powers, Carmella Warren, all of Las Vegas, Nev.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Warren; and a brother, Alvin Warren Jr.

Pallbearers were Marvin Balfour, Beneto Coleman, Ben Yarbrough, Donnie Taylor and George Yarbrough. Honorary pallbearers were Ernest Nichols Jr., Larry Coleman, Harold Powers Sr. and Ronnie Taylor.

Sara Jane Brown

Sara Jane Perry Williams Brown, 65 of Hornbeak, Tenn. passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007 at her home. She was a member of the Crockett Chapel Methodist Church, a former mayor of Byhalia, and a retired bookkeeper for Coleman Engineering. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Barton Williams,

Services were held on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Chase Funeral Home. Burial was in the New Crossroads cemetery. Kyle Williams and Brian Kannard officiated.

She is survived by her husband, whom she married icon September 28, 2002, Merlin R. Brown; four children, Kyle Williams of Jackson, Laura Williams of Nashville, Chris Brown of Sardis, Mississippi, and Hayley Jean of Hornbeak and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Logan Williams, Brian Kannard, Chris Brown, Tommy Jean, Larry Inman, and Perry Holley.

William Robert Churchill

William Robert (Bill) Churchill, 68, of Olive Branch, formerly of Potts Camp, died Feb. 25, 2007. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1961, during which time he met and married icon Bonnie Steely. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tenn. He was internationally known as an ingenious engineer. He created two businesses, Craft Machine, Inc. and Churchill Engineering, where he designed and custom-built special machinery to automate manufacturers around the world. He retired to Snow Lake Shores in Ashland, where he served as town alderman.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on February 28 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park South Woods cemetery.

He leaves a son, Kevin Churchill; three daughters, Tammy Churchill Davison, Sharon Churchill, Linda Robinson, three brothers, Lester, Charles and Luke; a sister, Jean King; and five grandchildren.

Sylvester Pryor

Sylvester (Booth) Pryor, 93, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 22, 2007 at V.A. Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a World War II veterans and a retired farmer.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 3 at Mt. Peel MB Church in Laws Hill, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Rondias Cox officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Alice Shaw of Broadview, Ill.; three sons, Sylvester Henderson of Holly Springs, Rev. Leon Henderson of Calumet Park, Ill., Rayford Pryor of Wynn, Ark. and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Leon Bowen, Oscar Lee James, Robert Earl James, Anthony James, Kelvin James, Vaughn P. Shumpert, Rudy Henderson and Mario Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Otis Henderson, Charles Moore, Frank Moore, John Pryor, Sam Pryor and Tony Bailey.

Hazel Custer Walker

Hazel Custer Walker, 95, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 25, 2007 at Benbrook Nursing and Rehab in Benbrook, Tx. She was the widow of Harmon Walker and a member of First Baptist Church.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 3 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.

She leaves grandchildren Samuel Walker of Arlington, Tx., Sharon Walker of Ft. Worth, Tx.; and a niece, Betty Jane Crawford of Memphis, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Eddie Walker and Harmon Walker Jr.

Charles Wicker

Charles (Gibson) Wicker, 74, of Fairfield Bay, Ark., formerly of Hickory Flat, died March 2, 2007 at Conway Regional. He graduated from East High School in Memphis, Tenn. and attended Northwest Community College in Senatobia. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 4 at First Baptist Church of Hickory Flat. Burial was in McKay cemetery in Hickory Flat. Bro. Johnny Rakestraw officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Paulette Wicker; two daughters, Lisa Wicker Madrigal of Ashland, Lynda Wicker Smith of Pickwick, Tenn.; four stepsons, Gary Sours of Fairfield Bay, Tim Sours, Keith Sours, both of Jacksonville, Fla., J.R. Cantrell of Gainsville, Fla..; stepdaughter, Rena Wilks of Fairfield Bay; two brothers, James Kenneth Wicker of Tupelo, Fred Wicker of Pontotoc; a sister, Mary Reese of Olive Branch; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Murray Wicker.

Pallbearers were Fredrick Cummings, W.D. Perkins, Mark Reese, Cory Smith, Carlos Madrigal, McDaniel Wicker, Roger Wicker and Tom Wicker.
