Louise Phillips

Louise Phillips, 79, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 9, 2006 at Alliance HealthCare System. She was a member of Mt. Gilead CME Church in Holly Springs, where she was missionary president, Sunday school teacher, church secretary, trustee and a member of the steward and stewardess board. She was a retired teacher, having taught school in LaFayette and Marshall counties for 40 years.

Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 16 at Mt. Gilead CME Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Q.H. Whitlock officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sisters, Inez Ellington of Gary, Ind., Adranna Phillips of Holly Springs; two brothers, Adell Phillips, Reynard Phillips, both of Holly Springs.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Jackson; and a brother, McCoy Phillips.

Pallbearers were Larry Phillips, Cardell Phillips, George W. Phillips, Coyle Sims, Allen Gardner and Earnest Haywood. Honorary pallbearers were James Douglas, Reynard Phillips, Adell Phillips and Oscar Douglas.

James E. Wommack

James E. Wommack, 77, of Byhalia, died Jan. 12, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was the widower of Mary Pruitt Wommack. He was a Baptist and a heat/air serviceman.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.

He leaves a daughter, Patricia Haney of Byhalia; a brother, Dean Wommack of Byhalia; two sisters, Earlene Bailey of Byhalia, Mary McGraw of Summerville, Ga.; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randy Breedlove, Jimmy Breedlove, Chris Conway, Danny Conway, Steven Breedlove and Cody Spoon.

Harriet Young
Harriet Young, 73, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 22, 2005 at her home.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 26 at Concord MB Church in Slayden. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Clyde Williams officiated. Serenity Funeral Home of Holly Springs was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves five sons, Theodore Young of Byhalia, Roosevelt Young Jr., John Young, both of Memphis, Tenn., Chester Young of Holly Springs, Stanley Young of Atlanta, Ga.; five daughters, Ruby Young, Rosie Young, Evelyn Stigger-Rosser, Gloria Young and Barbara Young, all of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Charles Waller of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Ruthie Briggs of Lamar, Violet Campbell of Memphis, Tenn.; 36 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Naomi Ellis
Naomi Ellis, 66, of Byhalia, died March 2, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn.

Services were held at 12 noon on March 5 at Mt. Olive MB Church in Byhalia. Burial was in Clayton cemetery in Byhalia. Rev. Willie Ward officiated. Serenity Funeral Home Inc. of Holly Springs was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Samuel Parrish of Byhalia; two daughters, Regina Howell, Tonya Howell, both of Byhalia; two sisters, Fannie Mosley of Byhalia, Catherine Parrish of Holly Springs; and three grandchildren.

Carl Henderson
Carl Henderson, 37, of Brandon, formerly of Holly Springs, died Feb. 28, 2005 at his home. He was a native of and had lived most of his life in Rankin County. He was a member of Johns Baptist Church. He spent many years in law enforcement, having served four years as a Mississippi Highway Patrolman.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 2 at Crossroads Baptist Church. Burial was in Concord cemetery. Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Paula Henderson; a daughter, Abigail Henderson; his mother, Clara Henderson of Pelahatchie; two sisters, Ava Brown of Pelahatchie, Sarah McMullan of Brandon; a brother, Aaron Henderson Jr. of Pelahatchie.

He was preceded in death by his father, Aaron Henderson Sr.

Landon Cy Huey
Landon Cy Huey, infant, died March 6, 2005 at Baptist Women’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. on March 7 at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial was in McKay cemetery in Hickory Flat. Bro. Randy Buse officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his parents, Kristen Foster of Hickory Flat, Cody Huey of Red Banks; his grandparents, Dwayne and Lugene Foster of Hickory Flat, Roger Huey of Myrtle, Connie Huey of Red Banks; and four great-grandparents, Novella Foster of Potts Camp, Clifton and Carol Holmes of Ashland, John and Clara Jane Huey of Pontotoc, Bobby and May Burton of Red Banks.

Andrew Jefferson
Andrew (Tater) Jefferson, 69, of Red Banks, died Feb. 28, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare in Holly Springs. He was a member of Mt. Newell MB Church.

Services were held at 12 noon on March 5 at Mt. Newell MB Church in Red Banks. Burial was in Mt. Newell cemetery in Red Banks. Rev. Arthur Fitchpatrick officiated. Serenity Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of 32 years, Bertha Jefferson; six sons, Andrew Jefferson Jr., James Earl Jefferson, Johnny Cross, all of Memphis, Tenn., Michael Jefferson, Harry Jefferson, Walter Jefferson, all of Red Banks; six daughters, Jane Alice Stinson of Holly Springs, Mary Nell McCray of Collierville, Tenn., Angela Hardaway, Priscilla Jefferson, both of Red Banks, Lucy Mae Sharp of Byhalia; four sisters, Betty Williams of Edwardsville, Ill., Parole Rockett of Madison, Ill., Shirley Smith, Matilda Nevills, both of Byhalia; three brothers, Lee Willie Jefferson of Red Banks, Charles Black, C.L. Black of Memphis, Tenn.; 28 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Thomas, Darryl Kinkle, Tony Nevills, Vince Jefferson, Elmecus Jefferson, Michael Jefferson, Marcella Jefferson.

Fred Johnson
Fred Johnson, 74, of Byhalia, formerly of Bronx, N.Y., died Feb. 28, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired window cleaner with See Clear Maintenance, Bronx, N.Y. He cleaned windows on the Empire State Building.

Services were held at 12 noon on March 5 at Antioch MB Church in Victoria, where he was a member. Burial was in McCraven cemetery in Victoria. Rev. Roger Daniels officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home in Holly Springs was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Frances Smith Johnson; two daughters, Sharon Johnson Rayford, Donna Johnson, both of Byhalia; a son, Kenneth C. Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif.; his father, William Henry Wright of Holly Springs; three sisters, Alice Jean Hughes of New Albany, Patricia Isom, Janie McNeil, both of Holly Springs; four brothers, Jack Wright of Rochester, N.Y., Troy Lee Wright, William (Bubba) Wright, Larry Wright, all of Holly Springs; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Johnson; two brothers, John Tucker, Jerry Dean Wright.

Pallbearers were Jack P. Wright, Terrell Tucker, Tiwan Hughes, Troy D. Wright, Randy Tucker, Ray Wilson Jr. Kevin Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Gordon Johnson, Frantz Jerome, Darrell Jones Johnson, Ronald William.

Woodrow Koonce
Woodrow Koonce, 60, of Byhalia, died March 2, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare in Holly Springs. He was a Baptist and a car salesman.

Private services were held on March 3. Burial was in Byhalia cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Cheryl Koonce-Cathey of Lavaca, Ark.; two brothers, Kenneth D. Phillips of Blue Mountain, Richard C. Phillips of Hattiesburg; and two grandchildren.

Mary Howell McKinney
Mary Howell McKinney, 105, of Holly Springs, died March 5, 2005 at Trinity Mission of Holly Springs. She was the widow of Lee McKinney, a member of the mother board and a member of the Missionary Society.

Services were held at 12 noon on March 8 at Strawberry MB Church in Holly Springs, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Arthur Fitchpatrick officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her caregivers, Emma Howell, Lurline Freeman, both of Holly Springs.

Adella Hopkins Neely
Adella Hopkins Neely, 90, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 27, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Leroy (Monk) Neely Sr., a member of usher board and Missionary Society for 36 years and a member of Heroines of Jericho Court #48.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 5 at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. S.A. Phillips officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Carrie Mae Dean of Byhalia, Gladys Reed of Holly Springs; four sons, Billy Sharp, Leroy Neely Jr., both of Byhalia, Ray Hardaway of Memphis, Tenn., Herbert Mack of Columbus; 25 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Denver Neely; five sisters, Ora Clay, Nonniel Boxley, Finnetta Gregory, Ollie Jones, Mae Eula Hopkins; a brother, Nat William Hopkins.

Pallbearers were Billy Sharp, Randy Sharp, Allen Martin, Larry Sharp, Dwight Reed, Nathaniel Reed. Honorary pallbearers were her sons.

Freddie B. Strickland
Freddie B. (Big Strick) Strickland, 63, died March 5, 2005 at Royal Oaks Nursing Home in Memphis, Tenn.

Services will be held at 12 noon on March 12 at Samuel Chapel Church in Ashland. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Francine Hodges of Lamar; three stepdaughters, Donna Jackson of Memphis, Tenn., Pearl Swann of Atlanta, Ga., Betty Kimbrough of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters, Reolia Bates of Norristown, Pa., Annie Anderson of Somerville, Tenn., Pearl Strickland, Mae Strickland, both of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Sammie Strickland of Hawaii, Bobby J. Strickland, Wesley Strickland, both of Washington, D.C.; his stepmother, Fletcher Strickland of Washington, D.C.; four stepsisters, Juanita Bogard, Ernice Elliott, both of Michigan City, Freddie Bogard of Holly Springs, Sylvia Cleveland of Memphis, Tenn.; two grandchildren, six stepgrandchidren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and his caregiver and uncle, Thomas Richards of Memphis, Tenn.

Mary Cornelia Winter
Mary Cornelia Winter, 98, of Holly Springs, died March 7, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Thomas Oren Winter and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a substitute teacher in Marshall County for many years.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 10 at First Baptist Church in Holly Springs, where she was a lifelong member. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery in Holly Springs. Dr. Curtis Ferrell officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Larry Winter of Monroe, La.; a daughter, Faith Winter Macon of Austin, Tx.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Quitman Winter, Wilva Edwards, Don Edwards, Butch Crowson, Tommy Winter, Lesley White, Dianne Fitzpatrick, Jim Fitzpatrick, Randall Macon, Veronica Macon. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Johnson, Lesley Tomlinson Jr., Garrie Colhoun, Dr. J.A. Hale, John Forester Jr., Greg Gresham, Harry Smith Jr.
