James Edward Jones Sr., 66, of Lamar, died March 12, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in DeSoto. He was the widower of Tempie Lee Jones.

Services were held at 12 noon on March 19 at Concord Baptist Church in Slayden. Burial was in Williams Temple Church cemetery in Moscow, Tenn. Rev. Clyde Williams, pastor, and Elder Robert L. Williams officiated. Serenity Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Lovie Jean Briggs Jones; five sons, Eddie Jones, Joe Jones, James E. Jones Jr., Carl A. Jones, all of Memphis, Tenn., Vernon L. Briggs of Nashville, Tenn.; six daughters, JoEarline Woods, Brinda Douglass, Benita Jones, all of Memphis, Juanita Jenkings, Angela D. Jones of Slayden, Carol Childs of Orlando, Fla.; five sisters, Dora Morris, Nancy Nunnally of Memphis, Loretta Jones, Gladys Jones, Margaret Murphy of Slayden; 25 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Sandy Jones Jr., Ernest Jones, Oliver Blackmon, John Henry Blackmon; a sister, Ola Mae Jones.

Prentiss Lipsey
Prentiss Lipsey, 61, of New Albany, died March 14, 2005 at his home.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 19 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in St. John cemetery in Oxford.

He leaves a daughter, Pauline Lipsey of New Albany; a son, Bobby Gean Lipsey of New Albany; five brothers, Curtis Lipsey, Barry Lipsey, Matthew Lipsey, all of New Albany, Kenneth Wayne Lipsey of Evanston, Ill., James Lipsey of Champagne, Ill.; two sisters, Geraldine Simpson of New Albany, Sarah Foster of Aurora, Ill; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert Lee Lipsey, Edward Lipsey, Sammie Lee Lipsey, Arthur Lipsey.

Lena Mae Carman Mills
Lena Mae Carman Mills, 89, of Byhalia, died March 19, 2005 at Byhalia. She was a retired physician’s bookkeeper and a member of Memphis First Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 22 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel in Olive Branch. Burial was in Byhalia cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Charles Gilbert Mills, a daughter, Donna Mills Long of Germantown, Tenn.; a son, Don Gilbert Mills of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Alma Ford Norfleet
Alma Ford Norfleet, 94, of Red Banks, died March 15, 2005 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. She was the widow of Hosie Norfleet, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a church stewardess. She was also a retired cook with H.W. Byers School in Mt. Pleasant.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 22 at New Hope CME Church in Red Banks, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. O.P. White officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Earlie Mapp of Detroit, Mich., Ruth E. Betts of Red Banks, Lottie Stephens, Ida L. Wells, both of Memphis, Tenn.; four sons, Roosevelt Norfleet of Red Banks, Edison Norfleet of Memphis, Tenn., Clarence Norfleet, Orlando Norfleet, both of Detroit, Mich.; a brother, R.W. Ford of Osceola, Ark.; 44 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Carrie Norfleet, Gladys Norfleet; and two sons, Cottrell Norfleet, Howard Norfleet.

Pallbearers were Randy Stephen, Anthony Norfleet, Joe Hines, Hosea Stephen, Michael Todd, Leo Luellen. Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Norfleet, Orlando Norfleet, Edison Norfleet, R.W. Ford, Roosevelt Norfleet, James Betts.

Annie Lorene Pannell
Annie Lorene Pannell, 78, of Holly Springs, died March 16, 2005 at Holly Springs. She was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church and a medical assistant with Trinity Mission.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 18 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Clear Creek cemetery in Lamar.

She leaves her husband, Lawrence Pannell; four sons, Lawrence Pannell Jr., Tommy Pannell, both of Red Banks, James Pannell of Southaven, Jimmy Dale Pannell of Red Banks; two daughters, Linda Evans of Red Banks, Kathy Bailey of Southaven; three brothers, Gene Yeager of Union City, Marcel Yeager, Wayne Yeager, both of Ashland; a sister, Faye Pannell of Holly Springs; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Luther Yeager; and a sister, Chestene Pannell.

John D. Patterson Jr.
John D. Patterson Jr., 75, of East St. Louis, Ill., died March 10, 2005.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on March 19 at Foundation of Life Christian Learning Center in Lamar. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Debra Patterson of East St. Louis, Ill.; three sons, John Alvin Patterson, Marion Patterson, Calvin Patterson, all of East St. Louis, Ill; a brother, James T. Patterson of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jessie Bell Scroggins
Jessie Bell Scroggins, 60, of Oxford, died March 15, 2005 at her home.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on March 21 at Wells Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville.

She leaves three daughters, Linda Perry Sattazahn of Memphis, Gerry Jo Perry Blaylock of Southaven, Lonita Perry Toombs of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, John W. Perry of Enid; three sisters, Mary Scroggins McGregor of Batesville, Peggy Scroggins O’Neal of Memphis, Cathleen Scroggins of Holly Springs; a brother, Sonny Scroggins of Holly Springs; and 14 grandchildren.

Dellar Smith
Dellar Smith, 83, of Collierville, Tenn., died March 16, 2005 at Collierville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on March 20 at Hardaway MB Church in Michigan City. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. A. Gholson officiated. Serenity Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Earlie B. Smith; six children, Christine Smith of Michigan City, Willie Smith of Bolivar, Tenn., Earnestine Royston of Potts Camp, Early Smith of Bolivar, Tenn., Della Norment of Whiteville, Tenn., Martha M. Polk of Olive Branch; a brother, Eugene Williams of Memphis, Tenn.; seven sisters, Lizzie Robinson, Dorothy Morrow of Bolivar, Tenn., Lukie Hill of Canaan, Jennie Anderson of Jackson, Tenn., Fannie McCarley of Collierville, Tenn., Betty Rivers, Bernice Beard of Whiteville, Tenn.; 29 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

Garnet Hitt Stone
Garnet Myrl Hitt Stone, 88, of Holly Springs, died March 16, 2005 at her home. She was the widow of Alvin E. Stone.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 20 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.

She leaves a son, Bennett E. Stone of Walls; three daughters, Angela Gephart of Hernando, Lois Holland, Sara Stone, both of Holly Springs; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsena Sparks.

Harry C. Vaughn
Harry C. Vaughn, 70, of Cayce, died in Memphis, Tenn. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a truck driver.

Services were held at 11 a.m. at Collierville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery in Collierville, Tenn.

He leaves his wife, Betty Vaughn; six daughters, Wanda Paty of Dickson, Tenn., Barbara Vaughn of Centerville, Tenn., Donna Wylie of Byhalia, Penny Vaughn of Byhalia, Paula Yopp of Memphis, Angela Garcia of Byhalia; a son, Harry C. Vaughn Jr. of Centerville, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Harriet Fitzpatrick.

Gladys V. Algee
Gladys V. Algee, 86, of Hernando, died March 23, 2005 at her home. She was the widow of Wilbur H. Algee and was retired from Gem Inc. of Byhalia.

Services were held on at 10 a.m. on March 26 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch with burial in the Byhalia cemetery.

She leaves a daughter, Trudy Algee of Horn Lake; a son, Andy Algee of Hernando; a brother, James Edward Vaughn of Olive Branch; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Bettie Jones
Bettie (McKinney Pegues) Jones, 95, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Holly Springs and Memphis, died Feb. 17 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago. She was the widow of Forrest Jones and Montegue Pegues.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 23 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Chicago. Burial was in Burr Oak cemetery.

She leaves two daughters, Merl Rowe and Bessie Lowe, both of Chicago; three siblings, Willie Holloway, Elmo McKinney Sr., both of Holly Springs, Mattie Earl Folsom of California; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Leonard Pegues; and 11 siblings.
