On Feb. 3, 1927, Bertha Lou Jackson was born to Luke and Bertha Ford in Cruger, Miss. Bertha was educated in the Itta Bena school system. In April 1943, she was united in holy matrimony to George Johnson and was happily married until his death in 1959. In 1965, she married Henry Jackson. He also preceded her in death on June 6, 2002.
Bertha was a professional "domestic engineer" by trade, where she was very loyal and faithful to all her patrons. She has nurtured and lectured many young minds in her lifetime, and has left a legacy that will be treasured by them all. Bertha was an excellent seamstress and chef.
In 1978, Bertha united with the Church of God under the leadership of the Elder Willie G. Jones, where she faithfully worked with her church family to spread God's word to the lost and dying world. She was constructive in her church activities, where she was the bookkeeper for many years until her health declined.
Bertha was a friend to all who would allow her to be. She would go beyond the call of duty to reach out to lend an extra hand to make someone's life brighter and load lighter. She was a true saint of God, who loved the Lord and proved it so in her spiritual will and ways. She has made this statement many times: "I just want to make heaven my home."
On Nov. 25, 2002, at 12:22 p.m., Bertha Jackson left this troubled world behind and entered the arms of her Savior and King, Jesus Christ.
Those who loved her dearly will cherish her memories, including one sister, Rebecca Harrington of Belzoni; four brothers, Will (Dieltroe) Ford and Isodoe Jennings, both of Chicago, Luke Ford of New York City, and James Ford of Louisville, Ky.; one aunt, Cloratee Smith of Itta Bena; one cousin, Versie Mae Haymore of Greenville; one brother-in-law, H.D. (Jean) Johnson of Columbus, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Bessie Johnson of Dallas; three special young adults whom she helped raise, Mary Swayze Hawkins Purvis and Morrow Hawkins, both of Jackson, and Mills (Luv-Luv) Hawkins of Oxford, Miss.; one godson, Tommy Brown of Greenville; her church family at Church of God, Rolling Fork; a special little grandson, Stephen Omar Suber; and her caregiver, Callie (Rodney) Suber, and children, all of Greenville.
