VAUGHN
Homegoing Celebration of Bertis Marie Woldon-Vaughn
Bertis Marie was born icon in Pascagoula, Miss., Aug. 5, 1919. She entered eternal rest one week after her 84th birthday celebration on August 12, 2003 in the home of her beloved brother, Carlos Beaudreau, in Washington, D.C.
Bertis was the second of seven children born icon to the late John Thomas Beaudreau and Eulalie Gertrude Beaudreau. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva V. Branson and Margaret JoAnn Hafler.
A devout Catholic, Bertis was baptized at St. Peter the Apostle Church, attended the Parish school, and was an active parishioner throughout her life.
In 1942, Bertis married icon and followed to Cambridge, Mass., her sweetheart, Robert Woldon, where she worked in retail sales and "supervised" the upbringing of her teenaged sister, Melva. Following the War, she and "Bob" built a home on North Market St. where they resided until his passing in 1963. Bertis spent the years 1965 to 1980, in Los Angeles, California helping her brother and caring for her mother.
She was wed to the late Milton E. Vaughn in 1968 and was a resident of Tulsa, Okla. until 1987, when she returned to Pascagoula and began the restoration of her grandmother's vintage home on Market St.
It was the joy of her life to trace her childhood footsteps along the path from her house to St. Peter's Church to attend Mass and all of the Church and school -sponsored activities of the Parish. Bertis had a special devotion to St. Anthony (who always led her to her lost items), the Sacred Heart of Jesus and our Blessed Mother.
To the dismay of many who would offer her a ride, Bertis was an avid walker and would generally express her preference to "getting her exercise" while walking from Market St. downtown to the Bank, the Singing River Hospital, Wayne Lee's or Walmart. She was particularly excited when Walgreen's opened its doors on Hwy. 90.
Although she didn't give birth to her nine nieces (Sharon, Roxann, Yvette, "Dee", Lynette, Henrietta, Eulalia, , Michelle, and Carla Marie) or three nephews (Leslie, Darryl, and Charles), she was "Nanie" to all, and "Other Mother" to several of them, with all of the joys and sorrows of parenthood.
She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Carlos Beaudreau of Washington, D.C., three sisters, Alma (Leonard) Hutchinson of Sarasota, Fla., Melva R. Gaitwood of Washington, D.C., and Blanche (Pete) Renfroe of Chicago, Ill., one stepdaughter, Martha McLeod of Kansas City, Mo. and one stepson, Brad Vaughn of Seaside, California., great nieces, great nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
The remains will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the 10:45 a.m, Tuesday, Aug. 19. Rosary at St. Peter Catholic Church, where funeral Mass will begin promptly at 11 a.m. with Father Willie Norvel, SSJ, officiating.
