Funeral services for Milton Larimore Sandy Sr., 92, of Corinth, are set for 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Andy Cotten and Dr. Glynn Wiygul officiating and burial at Henry cemetery.
Mr. Sandy died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born icon Feb. 29, 1916, in Dennis, the fourth of five children of the Rev. and Mrs. William Henry Sandy. He delighted in saying he was only 23 years old because he was a "leap year baby, " and technically only had a birthday every four years. Having lost his father early in life, he shared stories of a childhood where material possessions were few yet very rich in memories. After graduating from Belmont High School in 1934, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1937 to 1939 as a bookkeeper during the construction of Tishomingo State Park. During this period, he earned a degree from Draughonıs Business College in Tupelo. He moved to Corinth in the late fall of 1939 and worked as a bookkeeper with O.E. Spencer Jr. at 333 Tire Service.
Later, he worked for Richard G. Swartz, owner of the Corinth Lumber Mill. Mr. Swartz reportedly never wrote down a phone number, relying instead on Mr. Sandyıs knack for memorizing numbers. While working there for Mr. Swartz, Mr. Sandy developed a love for the lumber industry which endured his lifetime. He purchased the mill from his employer and it became Corinth Planing Mill Co., Inc. In 1957, he founded M.L. Sandy Lumber Sales Co., Inc., a wholesale distributor of lumber and building materials. Sandy Lumber Sales grew to over 250 employees with warehouse locations in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.
A major acquisition led to the formation of the CDI division of Sandy Lumber Sales. It grew to become one of the largest distributors of cabinet supplies in the United States. During this time the company was regularly ranked on the Mississippi Journalıs list of 100 largest privately held companies in the state.
Mr. Sandy was widely known and respected in the lumber industry for his affable personality, his attention to details, and his concern for customers and employees. He was active in his business until 2006 when, at the age of 90, he decided to "slow down."
In 1943, he married icon Bernice Elizabeth Avent, of Whiteville, Tenn. They made their home and raised their family in Corinth over the next 65 years. His hobbies over the years included bowling, coin collecting, swimming, country and gospel music and spoiling grandchildren.
A member of First United Methodist Church for over 64 years, Mr. Sandy served in the original building committee for the present church and on the Administrative Board. He was a proud member of the Young Menıs Bible Class and was recently named Honorary Lifetime Steward for the church. He was a mason of the 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, member of Corinth Lodge 116, a member of the York Rite, Corinth Chapter 76, and a life member of the Hamasa Shriners. He guided the planning and construction of the Masonic Building at Fillmore and Childs Street in 1951. He was a member of the Gideons and an active member of the Lions Club, serving in 1951 as aDistrict Governor of Lions Club International.
Mr. Sandy was a founding member of the Fair Association which built and promoted the fair grounds on Fulton Drive. It originally included a baseball stadium, horse race track, concession stands and exhibit buildings. Corinth Theatre-Arts is the only surviving structure of that complex.
Throughout his life, he was a patriot and generously gave to local and civic causes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. William Henry sandy and Cora Harris Sandy, and sisters Nadine Sandy, Beryl Sandy Coats and Faye Sandy Mann.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Avent Sandy of Corinth; sons Milton Sandy Jr. and wife Stephanie of Corinth and Herbert Sandy and wife Catherine of Smyrna. Ga.; daughters Patricia Sandy Wood and husband Robert of Dallas and Suzanne Sandy of Corinth; grandchildren David Milton Sandy of Memphis, Tenn., Robert Grand Wood and wife Kay of Dallas and Sandy Ashburn Wood of Dallas; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Charles Stafford, Ron Martin, Brent Avent, Billy Phillips, Phil Coats, Phil Vincent, Doug Strickland and Myron Coats.
Memorial contributions may be made to Methodist Children's Home, 114 Marketridge Dr., Ridgeland, MS 39157; Pine Vale Children's Home, 1872 CR 700, Corinth, MS 38834; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105; or a charity of choice.
