David Faith

David Locksley Dorstan Faith died on Nov. 5, 2001, in Sacramento, Calif., with his family at his side, following a long struggle with cancer. He was 52. Throughout his battle with that disease and all the other challenges of his life, he never allowed the hardships he faced to translate into a diminishing of his ideals or a darkening of his soul.

He was born Jan. 18, 1949, in Fresno, Calif., to Patricia and Pastor Leland Faith, and spent most of his early years traveling from town to town as his father established churches throughout northern California. He and his father later established an insurance agency together, and he founded and was the CEO of the Sterling Group. He graduated from the Army-Navy Academy in 1967, received a bachelor's degree in Russian history from the University of California-Irvine, and received a juris doctorate in 1980.

He was a brilliant, witty and gifted orator, an avid and passionate scholar of history and politics, and most remarkably an honorable and generous man. He was a complicated man who lived by one simple principle which was that no matter how bad people seemed they were fundamentally good and worth saving. He is greatly missed by those of us who were privileged enough to have had him touch our lives.

He was fond of an Irish blessing that seems appropriate for his new journey: "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sunshine warm your face, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."

He leaves behind in Bozeman, Nona Faith and their son, David Faith II (a senior at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.), and Rob, Carol and niece, Jeanne Brown; in Seattle, daughter, Shannon Grace (Krystof Sulewski); in Anaheim, Calif., daughter and grandson, Heather and Aaron Faith; in Sacramento, Calif., sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Leroy Marquez and niece, Chantel Henry; in Chico, Calif., Tina and niece, Norah Brennan; from all over the country, extended family and friends, Thelma Brown, Rhonda and Pat Steorts, Michelle and Greg Byers, Tristan and Mark Porter; Jerry, Chris, Brook and Dana Schnitker; Samantha Faith-Bufton; and dear friend, Judy Thompson and her family.

He was preceded in death by both his parents; brother, Michael Faith; and sister, Sharon Schnitker.

Memorial services were held Nov. 8 in Sacramento, Calif.
