Hazel Newell
ABERDEEN, S.D. - Funeral services for Hazel Newell, 73, of Aberdeen and formerly of Lemmon and Billings, Mont., will be Saturday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Interment will be in Greenhill cemetery.

Hazel passed away on Tuesday evening, Oct. 5, at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen.

Hazel Hannah LaRue was born Aug. 26, 1926, to Floyd and Lela (Hannah) LaRue at their farm in North Lemmon Township, Adams Co., N.D. She grew up on the farm, attending the North Lemmon School and Lemmon, S.D., High School. She worked at local restaurants, and in 1944 went to Pasadena, Calif., where she worked for Lockheed Aircraft during World War II. She later moved to Tacoma, Wash., and again worked in a cafe.

Following his service in WW II, Bud Newell returned to Lemmon and inquired of Hazel's parents where she was located. He traveled to Tacoma to renew their romance and bring her back to Lemmon. This romance lasted 53 years, following their marriage on July 19, 1946, at Baker, Mont.

They lived in Lemmon and to this union 11 children were born. Hazel continued to work in local cafes and raise her family, while Bud worked as a trucker. In 1976 they moved to Billings where she worked at the Ponderosa School in the lunchroom and playground. She particularly loved children and over the years of nurturing her family, many others were welcomed to her home and table. Hazel loved to cook, make homemade bread, can produce and "give" to her family. She always worried that there wasn't enough food of every type at her meals and that she couldn't give enough of herself to others. She was an immaculate housekeeper. Christmas was a special time for her, decorating her home for the Holidays, shopping, having her family near and baking many boxes of goodies for others. She also enjoyed family pinochle marathons and going fishing.

Traveling with Bud as he drove truck to many West Coast locations and stopping at as many road side fruit and vegetable stands as possible, was also a joy to Hazel. In 1993 they moved to Aberdeen where they have lived since. She had been on dialysis since March of 1991, but continued to make the most out of life, giving and sharing with her family and sharing her lifelong radiant smile.

She had been hospitalized since May 9, 1999.

Grateful for sharing her life are her husband, Bud of Aberdeen; 10 sons and daughters and their spouses: Gary and Connie and Ray Newell all of Aberdeen; Dennis and Donna Faye, Floyd, and Billy and Leigh Newell, all of Billings; Susan and Garry Johnson, Sandy and Kenny Paulson, Pam and Wally Dauwen and La Donna and Doug Dauwen, all of Lemmon; and Debbie and Terry Riester of Wilbur, Wash.; 28 grandchildren; three great-grandsons; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Shirley LaRue of Belle Fourche; and sisters and brother-in-law, Delores and Louie Guzzite of Yelm, Wash., and Lillian Clarkson of Rogers, Ark. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Roni Sue, her parents and two sisters, Molly LaRue and Lu Marty.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Evanson Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon.
