Earl Eugene Kirk
Earl Eugene Kirk, 73, of Billings, died at his home Monday, Nov. 8, 1999.
The son of Thomas P. and Delia A. Kirk, he was born in Belfry, May 16, 1926. He graduated from Belfry High School in 1944. During WWII he served with the Army Air Corps. He married Dorothy A. Logan in Billings, Aug. 16, 1945. They farmed on the family farm until moving to Billings in 1952 where he operated Kirk Motor Service for 31 years.
After retirement in 1985 he was able to spend more time enjoying the activities he loved most. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and especially loved exploring the countryside with his camper and boat.
He had been a member of Pryor Mountain Lodge and was past patron of Moss Agate Chapter, OES.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dorothy of Billings, and his two children, whom he adored, Linda (Lin) O'Hara and her husband, Gene of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ron and his wife, Jan of Billings; two grandchildren, Ryan O'Hara and his wife, Amy of Seattle, and Brittney O'Hara of Missoula; a brother, Doug Kirk of Twin Bridges; and a special nephew, Bob Kirk of Sioux Falls, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and brother, Warren.
A chronology cannot express the man. He lived life with courage and compassion and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will begin 1 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Orrin Nelson Bad Bear 'Skookum'
CROW AGENCY - Orrin Nelson Bad Bear, "Skookum, " 43, of Crow Agency, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, of injuries sustained in an auto accident.
He was born June 14, 1956, to Ira and Dessie Old Coyote Bad Bear Sr. He attended schools in Crow Agency, Hardin, Oklahoma and at the St. Labre Indian School. He was given to Allen and Susie Old Horn when he was a youngster.
Nelson married Melodee Reed in 1976 and the couple had two sons, Thomas Wayne and Orrin Nelson Jr., and two daughters, Dawna Rhea Marie and Harmonee Kershia, all living at the family home.
He participated actively in the Native American Religion, the Native American Church, Sun Dance and Sweat Lodge. His sisters through the Tobacco Religion were Janice and Rowena Gets Down.
Nelson paraded many times with grandma "May" and could not conceal his excitement when a parade was forthcoming. It was after a parade in Sheridan, Wyo., that a Nez Perce man gave him the name "Skookum." The name means "A Good Man" in the Nez Perce language. Nelson was an avid outdoors man and loved to spend time in the mountains, camping, fishing and hunting. He especially loved to ride horses. He was an exceptional athlete and participated in many sporting events, throwing arrows, playing basketball, wrestling and football, which he especially enjoyed. Nelson was very swift on his feet, winning many races in track and field. He was a member of the Crow Indian boxing team from 1969-72, where he enjoyed success as an athlete.
He was an influence to many people whom he came in contact with. His outgoing personality was appreciated tremendously by many. Because of his outstanding personality, Nelson was taken in as family and adopted by JoAnn Stops. He was taken in as a brother by Mervin White, Clinton Stops, Aaron Horse and Elizabeth Other Medicine, Christina Hill, Ardena, Sandra, Avonna, Jeanne, Sarah House, John Paul, Robert and Beverly Shane, all of the Other Medicine family.
Nelson was currently working for the Abandoned Mine Lands Program for the Crow Tribe. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Melodee; two sons and two daughters; five brothers, Ira Lindsey (Penny), Clayton (Daisy), Wendell (Dorcus), Harlan Kent and Henry, all of Crow Agency; three sisters, Victoria, Shirleen Hill of Crow Agency and Thomasine Begaye of Shiprock, N.M.; adopted sister, Paulette Not Afraid; his paternal fathers, Tom Bad Bear, Bill Lincoln and Gordon Lincoln; his paternal mothers, Darlene Eastman, Alma Cashen, Alvira Alden, Mary Louise LaForge, Marie Lincoln, Marjorie Wilkinson and Lois Whitehip; grandmother, Agnes Deer Nose. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert (Rachel), Henry Sarge, Dale (Myrna) and Jack (Debbie) Old Horn; sisters, Vivian Lizotte and Dessie Little Nest; mother, Winona Plenty Hoops.
Rosary will be recited 4 p.m. Friday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday in the Crow Agency Catholic Church. Internment will follow in the Crow Agency cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Wesley Crooked Arm
CROW AGENCY - Wesley Crooked Arm, 54, of Crow Agency, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in the University Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
He was born Feb. 7, 1945, in Billings, a son of Mathias and Wanita Crooked Arm. He grew up and attended schools in Crow Agency, St. Xavier, Hardin, and St. Labre. After graduating from high school, Wesley enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served during the Vietnam conflict and later received an Honorable Discharge. He attended college at Johns Hopkins University, Eastern Montana College and Little Big Horn College, furthering his academic experiences in psychology and chemical dependency counseling. He geared his education to assisting fellow Native Americans in the area of mental health.
Wesley married Victoria Marie Yarlott on Feb. 1, 1969, in Sheridan, Wyo., and the couple made their home in Crow Agency. He currently was employed with the BIA in the road department in Anchorage, Alaska.
He had a great interest in horses and was an outstanding horseman. He trained jockeys and owned five race horses.
Survivors include his wife, Victoria of Crow Agency; three sons, Aaron Leider of Hardin, Dale (Loretta) Crooked Arm and John (Becky) Five of Crow Agency; his father, Mathias Crooked Arm of Crow Agency; a niece, Cindy Crooked Arm of Crow Agency; adopted brother, Johnny (Lorena) Holds of Crow Agency; two adopted sisters, Wilma Howe of Lodge Grass and Pearl (Larry) Tobacco of St. Xavier; two uncles, Vincent (Mary Kate) Crooked Arm and Pius Crooked Arm of Crow Agency; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Cliff Leland Bays
Cliff Leland Bays, 58, of Billings, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Aspen Meadows Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the Riverside cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Lawrence G. Tunkel
GRASS RANGE - Lawrence G. "Larry" Tunkel, 51, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at his home of natural causes.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Cloyd Funeral Home Chapel in Lewistown. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the Veterans Administration cemetery at Fort Harrison.

Esther E. Eakins
MOORE - Esther E. Eakins, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at her home of natural causes.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in the Cloyd Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Central Montana Memorial Gardens, both in Lewistown.

Harry Makin Sr.
Harry Makin Sr., 78 of Billings, died unexpectedly Monday evening, Nov. 8, 1999, at his home. The son of Chester and Emma (Forrester) Makin, he was born in Grand Haven, Mich., April 8, 1921.
On April 23, 1941, he married Betty Jean Peck in Grand Haven. Harry was a decorated war veteran in WWII having received two purple hearts. He worked in a muffler factory for 25 years in Grand Haven before the family moved to Billings in 1979. In Billings, he worked for Montana Power Company for 13 years before retiring at the age of 76 in 1994.
Harry was a people person who was loved wherever he went, making friends easily. He was also an avid weather watcher who could have been a weatherman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially the beach and ocean. He had his greatest times with loved ones and friends. The past four years, he recorded all of his memories in a daily journal. Many people might have seen him walking, as he walked every day. Harry also loved animals and was a good father and grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty of Billings; his two brothers, John and Kenneth; his seven children: Montie and his wife, Ruth Makin and their sons, Ross and Jesse; his daughter, Marge Lutke and her husband, Richard of Laurel; Harry Jr. and his wife, Kay of Grand Haven; Dale and his children, Mark and Janie; Michael; Sherry and her husband, Bob and their son, R.J.; and Kim and her two children, Keenan and Kyra; and three great-grandchildren.
Harry was a very humble man who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Thursday, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah's Witnesses, 405 36th St. W., with interment to follow in the Laurel cemetery.

Dagny Raugstad
GLENDIVE - Dagny "Raugie" Raugstad, 99, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with interment in the Dawson County cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is in charge.

Frank Joseph Pickett M.D.
BOZEMAN - Frank Joseph Pickett M.D., 85, passed away Nov. 5, 1999, in the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle of complications following surgery for cancer. He was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Galena, Kan., to Eula (Kirby) and Frank James Pickett, the first of three siblings. He graduated from Joplin High School, Joplin, Mo.; Westminster College, Fulton, Mo.; and Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo.
He served as a flight surgeon in the United States Army Air Corps, 1942 to 1945, at air bases and hospitals in the United States and East Anglia, United Kingdom. He was sent to Paris, France, to care for soldiers wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.
As an 8-year-old, he visited Yellowstone National Park with three families of relatives. He fell in love with the area and its people and always wanted to return.
On June 8, 1945, he married Yvonne Bost, a nurse who also had graduated from Washington University. After working two years at St. Louis Maternity Hospital, he opened an office in Bozeman, where he was a family physician until his retirement in 1976.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Yvonne "Bonnie"; three children, Frank James Pickett and wife, Donna Jean of Butte; Mary Lee Pickett and husband, Vince Frezzo of Billings; and John E. Pickett of Butte; five grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Harry Richardson of Bowling Green, Ky.; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John M. and Doris Pickett of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Dr. Pickett was a member of the United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the American Legion. He has been a member of the Montana OB-GYN Association and the American Medical Association.
He had a wonderful life, loving where he lived and having a vocation that he enjoyed. He was at home in the out-of-doors, and was an avid hunter, fisherman and hiker. Many of his patients and associates became life-long friends.
Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bozeman United Methodist Church. Interment of ashes will be in Sunset Hills cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 S. Montana Ave., Helena, 59601; to the Bozeman United Methodist Church, 121 S. Willson Ave., Bozeman, 59715; or to the Bozeman Rifle Club, 131 Tristram Drive, Bozeman 59718.

Mary Frank
LAUREL - Mary Frank, 86, of Laurel, passed on to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Laurel Evergreen Care Center. Our Mom, Mary, went peacefully the same way she lived.
She was born April 13, 1913, the daughter of David and Sophie Weinmeister Hettinger. She married Dave Frank on Sept. 3, 1932.
She was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church and was active in Dorcas. Mary started the Frank Road Hobby Club and was a Laurel Garden Club member. She loved the Lord and it was apparent in her love for her family and friends. She was known for her chocolate angel food cake, rye bread, noodles and German foods. She was proud of her heritage and was an excellent seamstress, having made all of her children's clothes and granddaughters' dresses and coats.
She and Dave lived on their farm southwest of Laurel where Dave passed away in 1994. Mary continued to live on the farm until her health deteriorated in 1998. She taught her children well and will be sorely missed but will be in our hearts forever.
Survivors include her children: Darlene Holwegner of Billings, Vivian Hodges, Janet (Don) Ronan, Les (Peggy) Frank, all of Laurel; a sister, Lydia Reiter of Laurel; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dave; infant daughter, Marilyn; son-in-law, Donald Hodges; a great-granddaughter, Nicole Frank; sisters, Sophie Henry and Elizabeth McArthur; and brother, Jacob Hettinger.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at First Congregational Church in Laurel with interment in Park City cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel of Laurel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials to First Congregational Church, Laurel Garden Club or charity of one's choice.

Micheal Raymond Kukus
WORLAND, Wyo. - Micheal Raymond Kukus, 43, of Worland, passed away at his home Sunday morning, Nov. 7, 1999. He was born in Billings on Dec. 25, 1955. Following his graduation from high school he served in the U.S. Navy.
Micheal is survived by his mother, Irene Johnson of Joliet; his wife, Pat Kukus of Worland; a brother, Kenneth Kukus of Italy; a sister, Brenda Rehard of Billings; two sons, Chad Kukus of Billings and Jason Kukus of Eugene, Ore.; and his father, Orlie Kukus of Billings.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. Memorials are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2070 Overland Ave., Billings, MT 59102. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Bosserman
BEACH, N.D. - Floyd Bosserman, 86, of Beach, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Wibaux, Mont.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Evangelical Church with interment in the Beach City cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is in charge.

Lucille Smith Tyler
Lucille Smith Tyler, 83, of Billings, died at her home Monday, Nov. 8, 1999.
The daughter of John C. and Emily Longin Smith, Lucille was born Sept. 14, 1916, in Lewistown. She graduated from Fergus County High School in 1934 and attended Idaho State University for several years.
She married Paul Andrew Turck, Jan. 6, 1938. They lived in Hays, Fort Belknap, Browning, Poplar, Fort Hall, Idaho, Crow Agency and Billings. Paul preceded her in death, April 6, 1982. On Oct. 5, 1986, she married Earl M. Tyler. They lived in Moore. Earl died May 4, 1994. Mrs. Tyler returned to Billings in 1994.
Lucille enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Kola-ota, (Indian service employees wives club), and NARFE.
Survivors include her son, Keith Turck and his wife, Dee Ann of Havre; grandsons, Geoffrey Turck of Seattle, Bradley Turck and his wife, Mary of Devils Lake, N.D., and Jason Turck of Seattle; and two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Spencer of Devils Lake.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Claude.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
