MILDRED WEYDT
RED LODGE — Mildred Weydt, 76, a lifelong resident of Red Lodge, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 29, 2000 in Cedar Wood Villa. Born in Red Lodge on Dec. 27, 1923, she was the youngest of three children of Harley W. and Mabel E. Weydt.
Mildred lived at the family home where she was a charmer who spent lively times entertaining and bringing joy to all. she attended Red Lodge schools and later lived with her parents, assisting them with the many chores required in the operation of the family business, Harley’s Cottages Motel.

After her father’s death in 1959, the motel was sold and Mildred and her mother maintained a home until she died in 1980. Mildred resided with her brother, Harley (Ed), and his wife, Mary D. until it became necessary for her to enter Cedar Wood Villa due to extended ill health.

Mildred enjoyed attending and participating in the various activities at the Red Lodge Senior Citizens Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Evelyn.

Survivors include her brother, Harley E. Weydt and his wife, Mary D., of Red Lodge; two nephews, Dr. Joe Weydt of Missoula and Andy Weydt of Mankato, Minn.; two nieces, Judith Lorimer of New York City, N.Y., and Lynne Jackson of Aloha, Ore.; two cousins, Ramon Hyem of Red Lodge and Roger Hyem of Florence, and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Cremation has taken place, and family memorial services will be held at a later date. The Olcott Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.

SYLVIA V. SANDERS
RED LODGE — Sylvia Virginia Engler Sanders, 84, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at Cedar Wood Villa Nursing Home, where she had resided since September, 1993.
Sylvia was born in Cottonwood on Aug. 22, 1915. She married Bernard Engler in June, 1938.

Sylvia spent most of her life working as a cook. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, music and, most of all, her grandchildren. Sylvia was a lifetime member of the Eagles Auxiliary and a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Red Lodge.

Survivors include three daughters, Colleen (Bob) Currier of Soldotna, Alaska, Faye (Jim) Allen of Roberts and Shirley (Rich) Roat of Red Lodge; two sisters, Lee (Charles) Barnett of Cody, Wyo., and Leona (Bob) Davidson of Tracy, Calif., numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, her mother, Senia Kungas Rintala, her brothers, Matt and Waino Kungas, and her grandson, Wayne Payovich. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held March 18, 2000 at the Dahl Funeral Chapel-Red Lodge.

STEVEN J. RUBY
BOYD — Steven J. Ruby was born May 14, 1957 in Billings to Richard A. and Donna Mae Ruby. He was called home on March 14, 2000 to be with his loving creator.
Steve was raised in Billings and graduated from West High School in 1976.

In 1978 he met the love of his life, Kim Frank, and in 1983 they were married. Steve, Kim and daughter Stevie Lynn and son Derick Richard lived on their family ranch in Boyd.

Since 1981 he owned and operated his own siding and window business, Lynnrich, Inc. He also operated a small cattle business at his home in Boyd. He worked side-by-side with his wife Kim to make the business and the ranch everything that it is today, and we are proud of them.

Steve loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing, ranching and spending time with his family. He spent much of his time at the lake with his wife and children, water rafting and wake boarding. He coached baseball for Derick and enjoyed watching Stevie play volleyball and participating in her other school activities.

He was a loving father, husband, son and brother, and he will be deeply missed. He had many friends and neighbors who will miss him, too.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a niece, Brandie Kay. He is survived by his wife, Kim, his daughter, Stevie Lynn and son Derick of Boyd; his father, Richard (Dick) A. Ruby and stepmother Jean Ruby of Billings; brothers Rick J. Ruby of Kalispell and Robert W. Ruby of Lakeland, Fla., and a sister, Crystal K. Reichenbach of Billings. Other survivors include his grandmother, Mae Howard of Laurel; grandfather, Arthur Ruby of Superior, Wis., and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held March 17, 2000 at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Joliet Baseball Foundation, c/o Joliet Public Schools, Joliet, MT 59041.

CONSTANCE S. CUMMINGS
HARDIN — Constance S. Cummings of Hardin died March 17, 2000 in Hardin.
Born March 26, 1928 in Minneapolis, Minn., she was a daughter of Arthur W. and Verna B. Salisbury Hartwig. She married Stephen Sekulich in 1946. He died in 1956.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Hugh Cummings. Also surviving are four children, Susan Sekulich Clendenin of Billings, Pard L. Cummings of Bozeman, John B. Cummings of Bozeman and Cindy A. (John) Strecker of Big Horn; a sister, Marylinn A. Day of Orange, Calif.; six granchildren, John Erin Clendenin, Justin Roy (Mindy) Strecker, Alisun Lu Cummings, Chad Eugne Strecker, Stephen Drew Clendenin, Kindra Marie Strekcer, and two great-grandchildren, Nichole and Mikalyn Strecker.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Trish Cramblet, and her parents. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service is pending. Memorials may be made to the Big Horn County Historical Museum.

NORDEN ARTHUN
1910-2000
ROSCOE — Norden Arthun, 89, passed away early Sunday morning, April 2, 2000 at the family home in Roscoe, Mont. Norden was the last survivor and oldest son of nine children born to Norwegian immigrants Gunder and Jorunn Arthun. He was born July 24, 1910 on the family ranch on Upper Butcher Creek between Luther and Roscoe. Norden spent his early childhood herding sheep for his father and uncles in the nearby mountains, and his early adult life ranching near Roscoe.

In 1934 he began a 55-year career as a mail carrier between Roscoe, Red Lodge, Alpine and Absarokee. On Sept. 30, 1941 he married Irene Anderson in Billings, and they made their home in Roscoe for 59 years. He enjoyed fishing, yard work and gardening, reading and playing whist with his family. Norden was a gentle and kind man, deeply attached to his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and sisters and brothers-in-law. He was blessed with many friends in the area and considered them as family also. His life was characterized by helping others and always encouraging people to enjoy and be thankful for what they had.

At the time of his retirement at age 80, it is believed that he had the longest record for star route mail service in the United States. His special service and accommodations to those along the mail routes were appreciated and will be remembered by many.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Arthun of Roscoe; daughter Diane (Dr. William R.) Evans of Eagle River, Alaska; son Dean (Peggy) Arthun of Red Lodge; grandson Dr. Jeff (Brenda) Tjaden of Montgomery Village, Md.; granddaughter Jennifer (Brett) Prince of Bearverton, Ore.; granddaughter Kirsten Arthun, attending Concordia College at Moorhead, Minn., and grandson Erik Norden Arthun of Red Lodge. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many cousins in Norway.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Tjaden, and eight brothers and sisters. His life was full and rewarding, and a gift to all who knew him. Norden was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Absarokee, and a 63-year member of Star in the West Masonic Lodge and Royal Arch Masons of Red Lodge.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8 in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Absarokee. Interment will be in the Roscoe Cemetery, with Olcott Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Roscoe Community Center or to the charity of one’s choice.

LEONARD E. BELL
RED LODGE — Leonard Edwin Bell passed away March 29, 2000 at Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge. He was born to Matt and Mayme (Harmala) Bell in Roberts on Jan. 30, 1924.
He attended grade school at Cottonwood School and graduated from Roberts High School. Leonard spent his whole life on the farm, and enjoyed irrigating his fields. He also did custom combining around the area. When he had time, he would go into his shop to try out a new idea he dreamed up. Leonard enjoyed music and played the trombone in the Red Lodge Band.

He was on the board of directors for the Roberts Volunteer Fire Department and was secretary/treasurer of the Finn Ditch Co. for years.

Preceding Leonard in death were his father in 1947 and his mother in 1999.

Surviving are his brother, Arthur (Cammie) Bell of Billings; nephews, Allen (Connie) Bell of Roberts and Gene (Karen) Bell of Maple Valley, Wash.; a niece, Teresa (John) Hanson of Billings; great-nephews, Erik Souther, Colin and Connor Bell; a great-niece, Kaitlin Hanson and step-great-nephew and niece, Travis and Ashley Hanson. Leonard also leaves numerous cousins and his good friend, his collie, Sharpie.

At Leonard’s request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings handled the arrangements.

If so desired, memorials may be made to the Roberts Volunteer Fire Department in Leonard’s name.

NORMA L. CROWDER
GILLETTE, Wyo. — Norma L. Crowder, 76, of Gillette, died March 29, 2000 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital.
Services were held April 1, 2000 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gillette, with interment at Belfry Cemetery, Belfry, Mont.
Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
