Chester P. Johnson
WESTBY, Wis. – Chester P. Johnson, 92, of Westby and formerly of Coon Valley and Sidney, Montana, died Thursday May 25, 2000 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Vernon. He was born Aug. 28, 1907 in Coon Valley to Melvin and Anna (Veum) Johnson. In the spring of 1911, he moved wit his parents to the bare land of the Montana prairie. They settled near Lambert, Montana, where Chester farmed with his parents for many years. In his autobiography Chester wrote: “1930 was the start of the dry years, the depression, the dust storms. In 1931 I was home with my folks to help with the farm work. This year turned dry, not enough rain, no hay and a very poor crop. But we never gave up hope. In 1932, we tried to farm some, but terribly dry and dust storms–again no hay or grain. Dad sold off most of his cows, no feed. There was no work to be had, no money.” However, Chester who all his life projected a positive attitude, goes on to recall, Sept. 25, 1934, the day he and four friends received word to report to Fort Peck, where the Fort Peck Darn, a government project to give people work, was being built. He worked there five years from start to finish of the dam.
In 1940, he was able to make a down payment on a farm near Sidney, Montana. In 1949, he spent the winter in Coon Valley and La Crosse, where he met Ada Tollackson, a widow with three children. The following year they were married and the family moved to Sidney, where they remained for 29 years until Ada’s death in 1979. While in Sidney, Chester farmed on Mt. Pleasant and served as Secy-Treas. of the Mutual Insurance Co. until his retirement. Later that year, he married Bernetta Peterson, whose husband had died. Bernetta died in 1998.
Chester is survived by his step children, John (Lyn) Tollackson of Mesquite, Nev., Myrna Namen of Park City, Mont., Stuart (Bonnie) Peterson of Chaseburg, Kathryn (Sid) Foster of Georgia and Susan (Brig) Konecke of Waupaca, step daughter-in-law Edith Peterson of Chaseburg and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins and friends.
