SHARON CLAWSON

Sharon Lee Clawson, 59, of Havre, church secretary/receptionist, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at a Great Falls hospital after a long fight with cancer.

Cremation has taken place. The celebration of her life is 5 p.m. today at the Van Orsdel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Parr officiating. There will be a fellowship reception following the celebration of her Life at the church. There will be a private family burial of ashes at a later date.

Sharon was born Sept. 21, 1943, to Richard William and Hazel Elaine (Kibbee) Teske at Tacoma, Wash. She graduated from Shoreline High School in Seattle in 1962. She also attended college in Seattle.

On Aug. 23, 1969, Sharon married Sam E. Clawson in Seattle. To this union, three children were born. The couple moved to Haugan, Judith Gap, Alberton, and finally to Havre.

Sharon was the secretary/receptionist at the Van Orsdel United Methodist Church for many years before her illness. She was active in United Methodist Women, the Joyful Sound Bell Choir, and played Notes D&E.;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Hazel Teske; stepmother, Anna Teske; sister, Delores Shutte.

Survivors include her husband, Sam E. Clawson of Havre; children, Sheila Alefteras of Havre, Samantha Clawson of Missoula, Sabrina Clawson of Eugene, Ore.; sisters, Peggy (Richard) Smith of Brair, Wash., Sheila (Daryl) Harper of Toledo, Wash., Barbara Libby of Lynnwood, Wash., Carol (Gary) Hansen of Marysville, Wash., Margaret ("Butch") Martin of Vancouver, Wash.; brothers, Richard (Bev) Teske of Hayden, Idaho, and Ray (Carol) Kibbee of New Hampshire; one grandchild, Jordan Alefteras; nieces and nephews too numerous to count; many "adopted" children, grandchildren, sisters, and the entire congregation at the Van Orsdel United Methodist Church.

Memorials in Sharon's honor may be made to The Sharon Clawson Fund, c/o Van Orsdel United Methodist Church, Box 606, Havre, MT 59501.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

MARTIN STANLEY

ROCKY BOY - Martin "Partner" Stanley, 81, retired construction

worker and the last surviving World War II veteran from Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at a Great Falls hospice of cancer.

A wake service began Thursday evening at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church at Rocky Boy. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Rocky Boy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ruth Votaw officiating. The burial with full military honors will follow the funeral service at the Rocky Boy cemetery.

Martin was born on May 16, 1921, to James and Mary (Thornmaker) Stanleyat Great Falls. He attended Franklin Grade School in Great Falls. Martin entered the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific Campaign.

Martin married Wilma Myers in Great Falls. They celebrated 57 years together March 20, 2003. He was employed as a construction worker for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Rocky Boy.

Martin was involved in the Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremonies.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Stanley; sons, Thomas and Clement James of Rocky Boy and Harvey, of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada; daughters, Jocelyn Stanley of Rocky Boy and Glenda Winterrowd of Great Falls; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

BETTY FENGER

CHESTER - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Fenger, 80, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at a Chester hospital of cancer.

Funeral services were today at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester, with burial following at the Chester cemetery.

Betty was born on April 18, 1922, in Gilliam, La. She spent her early life in Louisiana, where she received her elementary education at Belcher. Her mother, Elizabeth Starling, married a Montana farmer, Scott Benjamin, so she grew up with her two sisters in north-central Montana. Betty finished her schooling at Galata where she graduated in 1940.

Betty married Herbert W. Fenger on March 25, 1941, in Joplin. They made their home on Herb's farm seven miles north of Lothair. She worked diligently as a farm wife and mother to their two sons. In 1979 the Fengers retired and purchased a home outside of Polson. They spent their winter months in Mesa, Ariz.

Betty was diagnosed with cancer in 1998. Because of her declining health, the Fengers moved back to the Hi-Line two years ago. They purchased a home in Chester to be near their family and friends. Betty continued to receive medical treatments. She died the day after her 62nd wedding anniversary.

Betty was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church north of Lothair, where she maintained a lifetime membership. She also attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester and the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Polson. She was a member of the Big Sky Rock & Gem Club of Polson and the "Flying Farmers" of Montana. Betty was a strong supporter of cancer research and helped raise money during the annual "Cancer Walk" in Polson for several years.

Betty loved flying, camping, traveling, card games, like "Phase 10, " whist and pitch, and being with her family and friends. She enjoyed rock-hounding and arrowhead hunting. Herb made beautiful jewelry from the gems and precious stones. She enjoyed crafts and painting, and her oil and China paintings were quite exceptional. She collected old bottles and Precious Moments figurines. She enjoyed cooking, decorating cakes and making jams, jellies and candy. She loved to read, mainly the Living Bible, Reader's Digest and similar publications.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Ruby McGuigan and Lucille Karst.

Survivors include her husband, Herb Fenger of Chester; sons, Joel (Ruth) Fenger of Chester and Gerald "Jerry" Fenger of Galata; a special family friend, Judy Wichum of Chester; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her loving poodle, Nikki.

Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester.

RALPH GRAY

FORT BELKNAP - Ralph C. Gray Sr. (Wanni oh-yay) "Eagle Track, " 67, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at his home due to natural causes.

Ralph was born at Lodge Pole to Andrew Gray and Agnes (Gives The Blanket) Long Fox on May 8, 1935.

Ralph was an experienced welder and worked for many years in Montana and California. He worked for five years for the BIA. Ralph was a firm believer in his Indian ways. He loved going to powwows, singing with his children, cooking and visiting with family and friends. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Agnes Gray; brothers, Charles A. Gray Boy Sr., Gordon G. Gray Sr., Lyndon P. Gray, Walter Long Fox Jr. and Gregory Long Fox.

Survivors include his sons, Andrew Gray, Ralph Gray Jr., and Terry Gray, all of Fort Belknap, and Gordon D. Gray of Rocky Boy; daughters, Andrea Gray Reeves of North Carolina, Gwen Gray Hagler of Laramie, Wyo., Carol Gray Bazzant of Utah, Jarey Gray Whitehawk of Wyoming; brothers, Emery Gray and Joseph Gray, both of Wolf Point, Robert Long Fox and Merrill Gray, both of Lodge Pole; sisters, Lydia Snell and Julia Long Fox, both of Lodge Pole, and Ovilla Long Fox of Minnesota; adopted brothers, Philmore Whitehawk and Tommy Christen, both of Poplar, Ralph Jones of Brockton, Robert Four Star of Wolf Point, Glen Anaquod of Canada, and Clint Able of Malta; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

EMMI KELSO

CHESTER - Emmi Viola Schroer Girard Kelso, 89, died Sunday, Fed. 2, 2003, from complications of Alzheimer's disease at a Spokane, Wash., care center.

A funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester. A reception will follow at the church. Graveside service and burial will be 3:30 p.m. at the Lothair cemetery.

Emmi was born on Oct. 2, 1913, on the family homestead north of Galata to Linus and Ester (Naslund) Markuson. She grew up on the farm and received her early education at the Greenhill country school. After graduating from Galata High School, Emmi continued her education at Western Montana College in Dillon, where she received her teaching certificate in 1934. During the next four years, she taught school near the Sweet Grass Hills and Galata.

Emmi met Louis J. Schroer and they were married on June 27, 1938. They lived in Browning until 1945, then purchased Lou's Service Station at Lothair. The mom-and-pop business was a truck stop, motel, mini-grocery and souvenir store.

In the late 1950s, they went back to teaching. Lou became principal at Chester High School and Emmi taught school in Sunburst. In 1960, she accepted a teaching position at Chester grade school, so they moved to town. Lou died on Jan. 28, 1967. Emmi continued to teach. In addition, she attended school at Northern Montana College in Havre and earned her bachelor of science degree in education in 1972. She retired from the Chester school system in 1974 and moved to Kalispell.

Emmi married Richard Girard in 1976. He died the following year. Several years later she married Robert Kelso. They made their home in the Flathead Valley until 1995, when they moved to Spokane, Wash., to be close to Emmi's daughters. He died in March 2000.

Emmi had been very active in the Catholic Church throughout her life. She loved music, embroidery, gardening, dancing and playing bridge. She enjoyed cooking and baking and collected cups and saucers.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; sisters, Elizabeth Leighton, Evelyn Jones and Ethel Kinyon; brothers, Harold and Leonard Markuson.

Survivors include her children, Marilyn Rider of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., Karen (Richard) Gertson of Spokane and Louis John (Linda) Schroer of Casper, Wyo.; sisters, Lillian Cockrell Fenster of Kalispell, Mildred Visocan of Raynesford and Ester Marie Berry of Mesa, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Home, Chester.

GAYLENE LALUM

JOPLIN - Gaylene Yvonne Lalum, 47, died on Friday, April 4, 2003, at her home in Kalispell due to Hodgkins lymphoma.

The funeral service for Gaylene will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Joplin High School in Joplin. Burial will be at Landusky cemetery at 4:30 p.m. with a supper following at the Landusky School.

She was born Feb.16, 1956, in Havre to Raymond and Margaret Williams of Landusky. She attended grade school in Landusky, Dodson and qt St. Jude's Catholic School in Havre. Lalum attended her freshman year in Lewistown and the remaining years of high school in Missoula. She graduated from Loyola Catholic High School in 1974.

Lalum attended the College of Great Falls and graduated from Spokane Community College with an associate degree in childhood development.

She married Andy Lalum on Oct. 27, 1979, in Havre, and they lived at the family farm near Joplin until 1998. They then moved to Bozeman where Gaylene owned and operated Auntie Gayle's Daycare. In June of 2000 she was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. At the time of her death the family resided in Kalispell.

Gayle had a love for children and they loved her. She radiated the love of Jesus in every aspect of her life. She brought many people into a deeper faith and trust in the Lord. Gaylene lived her life for the Lord and her family.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Raymond and Margaret Williams.

She is survived by her husband, Andy; children Adam, Andrea, and Jesi; brothers, Dan (Carol) Williams and Jerry (Lorri) Williams of Landusky; Terry (Linda) Williams of Frenchtown; sisters Ramona (Bill) Kienenberger of Lovelock, Nev., Bonnie (Jerry) Lankford of Dodson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Cancer Family Network, Box 6446, Bozeman, MT 59771.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.

SANDRA BURRINGTON

Sandra Yvonne Burrington, 57, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at a Havre hospital due to complications from cancer.

Sandra was born Nov. 18, 1945 to Raymond L. and Lilly (Gilbert) Deeds in Vallejo, Calif. Sandy attended schools in Havre and graduated from Havre High School in 1964.

After High School, Sandy attended Northern Montana College for one year and then transferred to Billings, where she studied business/secretarial.

In 1966 Sandy married Henry Moore. The couple moved to Memphis, Tenn., and they had a daughter, Twila. Henry died of cancer and Sandy and Twila moved back to Havre to be near family. Sandy worked at the hospital in the medical records department.

She later married James Burrington and the couple had a daughter, Jessica. Sandra and Jim later divorced. Sandra liked to keep busy and enjoyed working. She worked at Call Solutions for the last two years of her life until her illness prevented her from doing so.

Sandy enjoyed the outdoors, especially the Bear Paw Mountains and Beaver Creek Park. She liked to camp, fish, listen to music and dance. She loved to complete crossword puzzles and was very good at them. Sandy liked to plant flowers. Her most enjoyed time was spent with her family, most importantly her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Deeds, and her first husband, Henry Moore.

Sandra is survived by her parents, Dwayne and Lilly Kretchmer of Havre; daughters, Twila (Robert) Inman of Conrad and Jessica Burrington of Havre; sisters, Deanna (Charles) Hale of Havre and Jody and (Duane) Skoyen of Chinook; half sisters, Linda May (Patrick) Parker of Burnsville, Minn., and Jo Ann (James) Pinski of Great Falls; brother, Matt (Rose) Kretchmer of Havre; four grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Viewing was 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and 9 to 11a.m. today at the Holland and Bonine Chapel. Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fifth Avenue Christian Church with Rev. Rowlie Hutton officiating. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately after the service.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

JANE CALLAHAN

Jane Callahan, 76, of Havre, a retired dental assistant, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Peace Hospice of Montana of cancer.

A rosary and vigil are 7 p.m. today at St. Jude's Catholic Church. Her memorial service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with burial of ashes in Highland cemetery.

She was born Jan. 4, 1927, in Havre, where she was raised and educated. She attended St. Jude's Grade School and graduated from Havre High School in 1945, then attended Northern Montana College in Havre. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Ray Gallus and Dr. Floyd Vallie.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters and St. Gerard's Circle. She enjoyed sewing, reading and the cabin at Beaver Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Olga Zygmond and brothers John and Jack Zygmond.

Survivors include her husband, John Callahan of Havre; daughters Shannon (Owen) Johnson of Billings, Maureen (Russ) Wicks of Ledger and Kerry (Bob) Bronson of Great Falls; sons, Pat Callahan of Seward, Alaska and Tim Callahan of Havre; sister, Margaret Webb of Havre; brothers, Lou Zygmond of Billings, Alex Zygmond of Mesa, Ariz., and Joe Zygmond of Havre; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Catholic School or Peace Hospice of Montana.

Croxford and Sons Funeral Home in Great Falls is handling arrangements.
