WARREN ARDIS
MISSOULA -- Warren Monroe Ardis of Dixon died on Oct. 22, 2004, at Community Medical Center here. He was born on May 15, 1924, at the family place on Revais Creek, the son of Ray and Mabel (Telling) Ardis. Warren grew up and attended school in the Dixon area. His passion for the western lifestyle began as a young man, when he headed to the Bitterroot Valley and took up work as a hired hand with several local ranches. After spending some time ranching in Wisdom, he made his way to Oregon, where he worked on the shipyards during WW II. He later returned to the Dixon area and worked at the sawmill. He married Marie Miles on July 17, 1943, in Butte. Warren continued as a saw operator for various sawmills in Sanders County. The family spent 14 years in Plains before moving to their current home at Magpie Creek in 1969. In 1972, Warren became disabled following a sawmill accident and soon after retired. He loved riding horses, listening to western music and watching movies on the western channel. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pearl and Joyce; a son, John; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons, Roy and his wife, Anna (Plains) and Robert and his wife, Laurel (Kalispell); two brothers, Jim Ashcroft and his wife, Judy and John Ashcroft (all of Newport, OR); a sister, Clara, and her husband, Vern (Haugan); six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services took place on Oct. 26 at the St. James Catholic Church in Plains. Burial followed at the Plains Cemetery.

DAN CALLAHAN
ST. IGNATIUS -- Dan Callahan died on Oct. 24, 2004, at St. Luke's Extended Care in Ronan. He was born on Feb. 17, 1923, to Daniel David Callahan Sr. and Mary Colgan Callahan in Baltimore. He was raised in Dallastown, PA, and graduated high school in 1939. He worked as a boilermaker and photographer and served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. After the war, he returned home and married Afton Agnes Lundblade on March 2, 1946, in Idaho Falls. After almost a year of travel they settled on a farm in Salmon, Idaho. They later bought a bigger farm in St. Ignatius. Dan was active with the Lake County Democratic Central Committee, the Lake County Weed Board, the Montana State Potato Growers Assoc., the St. Ignatius Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Afton, in 1994; daughter, Dianne, in 1959; brothers, Richard, Paul Carroll and Colgan; and sister, Jean Miller, all of Pennsylvania. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Anita and Ted Childs (Kent, WA), Daniel and Carol Callahan (Brighton, IA), Thomas and Patti Callahan (Las Vegas), Marilynn and Gary Shamblin (Four Lakes, WA), Christine and Jim Marks (Great Falls), Katherine and Jerry Krantz (Huson), Stephen and Shirley Callahan (Las Vegas), Timothy and Mary Callahan (St. Ignatius), Celeste and Bruce Hoyer (Belt), and Roseanne and William Rider (Manhattan); 29 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald, Walter. and Francis (all of Penn.); and two sisters, Rita Rossi and Kathleen Jones (both of Maryland). Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Oct. 29 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Mission Church Restoration Fund.

RUTH BUFFALO CHIPPEWA
GREAT FALLS -- Ruth Buffalo Chippewa died here on Oct. 16, 2004, at the age of 83. She is remembered for how much she enjoyed playing stickgame and bingo, and cards with family. She also loved to go to powwows, giveaways, and sun dances, along with beading and making moccasins and wing dresses. She was preceded in death by her husband, David, in 2000; her parents; four children, Robert, Sylvia, Jim, and Lloyd Chippewa; six brothers, Jack, Jim, Sam, Dan, Albert, and David; and two sisters, Margie and Mary. Ruth has been laid to rest next to David and her sons in Helena.

SHARON CHRISTENSEN
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Sharon Ann McDonald Christensen died on Oct. 14, 2004, of a heart attack here. She was born on Jan. 31, 1942, in St. Ignatius, to Alexander and Carmelita McDonald. A member of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Sharon lived in Montana until moving to California in 1960. She loved to play stickgame whenever she travelled home to the reservation for the 4th of July Celebration in Arlee. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Thomas McDonald; her daughter, Rochelle; and Gerald Lewis and Joe Montague III. She is survived by her husband, James W. Christensen (Thousand Oaks); two daughters, Lynnae Tyler (Ozaukie, KS) and Denaise Montague (Phoenix); a son, Joseph Montaque III (Los Angeles); two granddaughters, Sharon Brouhard (Spokane) and Amber Brouhard (Thousand Oaks); and siblings Dennis McDonald (Crow Agency), Marliss Santos (Ronan), Eula Jean Bluff (Usk, WA), Patsy Urrabazo (Phoenix), Robert McDonald (Phoenix), and Terry McDonald (St. Ignatius).

ALICE CLARK
POLSON -- Alice Julia Clark died on Oct. 20, 2004, of natural causes at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here. She was born in Vale, OR, on March 15, 1911, to John and Lizzy Phillips Dowell. She grew up in Lima, where she met and later married Alma Andrew Clark. She and Alma lived in Idaho and Oregon before moving to Missoula in 1945, living there until 1966, when they moved to Bountiful, Utah. They retired in 1976 to Yuma, Ariz. While in Missoula, Alice worked at the Missoula Mercantile and the University of Montana Library. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was very active during her years in Bountiful. In Yuma, she and Alma enjoyed active retirement life, dancing, card games, travel and also square dancing. Alice was a homemaker and seamstress. She took care of her parents and Alma's mother during their illnesses. She was also an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Les Brewerton; and her only grandson, Steven Reed. She is survived by her two children, son Jack V. Clark and his wife Phyllis Zigmund (Stevensville) and daughter Joyce Reed (Polson); two granddaughters; five great grandchildren; and two nieces. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held in the Lima Cemetery at a later date. Friends wanting to honor her memory may make a donation to the Polson City Library.

EMMA LAVERNE HARRELL
LYLE, Wash. -- Emma Laverne Harrell died at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland on Oct. 17, 2004. She was born on Jan. 28, 1932, in Polson, to Elliott and Alice (Dupuis) Menzie. She grew up on the family farm in Pablo and attended schools in Ronan. Emma married Raymond Arthur Oren Harrell on Nov. 13, 1948, in Bigfork. They moved to Roseberg, OR, in January of 1949. In 1960, they moved to Beaverton until retiring to Lyle in 1985. She was a member of Flathead Indian Nation and St. Peter's Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, painting and reading. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, Rudolph Menzie, James Menzie and Vi Crouch. She is survived by her husband, Ray (Lyle); four children, Sandy Golden (Beaverton), Linda Sifferman (Bend), Donna Brandt (Oregon City), and Leah Carpenter (Portland); a stepson, Dennis Harrell, and his wife, Sandra (Lynnwood, WA); seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Patsy Knutson (Polson) and Leah Shuemaker (Pablo); and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 19 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment followed on Oct. 20 at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.

BOB HAWKINS
ARLEE -- Robert Andrew "Bob" Hawkins was born on Sept. 14, 1938, to Owen Burt and Julia Matt Hawkins. He died on Oct. 31, 2004, at home. He joined the Navy when he was 17. A couple of years later he met and married Joyce. They divorced a few years later. In 1964, Bob suffered a stroke and numerous operations which left him handicapped. After losing his ability to drive, Bob was well known hitchhiking. In the last six years, he served as a bouncer at the Silver Dollar Bar in St. Ignatius. He leaves behind son Denny; daughter Lori; three sisters, Amy Depoe, Ramona Liberty and Sybil Butler; one brother, Joseph Hawkins; and brother-in-law Joe Butler. Bob always kept dogs as companions, tending to their needs before his own. The family asks instead of flowers, to give contributions to animal shelters in his memory. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held on Nov. 4 at the Longhouse.

RICHARD HERTZ
POLSON -- Richard L. "Dick" Hertz died at his home here on Oct. 14, 2004. He was born in Bridger on July 10, 1933, at the home of his parents, Adam and Helen Hertz. Dick grew up in Billings, graduating high school there in 1951. He loved motorcycles and owned the first 650 BSA in Billings. At 16 years of age, he hitchhiked to Seattle and caught a boat to Alaska, where he worked for the summer in the fish canneries. After graduation, he joined the Navy Reserve. While working on a seismic crew in Malta, he met Virginia Mae White. They were married on March 15, 1953. While living in Malta, Dick worked for Carter Oil and eventually owned his own bulk plant. He also worked in the logging and trucking industry and for Plum Creek Timber Co., from which he retired in 1988 after approximately 25 years of service. Dick loved to hunt and fish, and to go camping, snowmobiling and golfing. Both Dick and Virginia could also be seen at all of their sons' sporting and school events. In 1989, the couple moved to Wolford Heights, Calif. They returned to Montana in 1994 and continued to spend winters in warmer climates visiting friends and children. In 1997, Dick began his struggle with colon cancer. He went through many surgeries and fought hard to beat the disease. However, his battle was stopped short by apparent heart failure. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Josephine and Pete White. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three younger sisters and their spouses, Margie and Richard Kelly (Lake Havasu City, AZ), Judy and Milt Fretheim (Columbia Falls), and Connie and Rick Smith (Cave Creek, AZ); his five sons and four daughters-in-law, Mike and Peggy (Missoula), Steve (Polson), Rick and Gayle (Great Falls), Greg and Kate (Polson), and Shawn and Sondra (Ridge Crest, CA); 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Oct. 18 at the Immaculate Conception Church with Father Gary Reller officiating. Cremation followed and inurnment will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 3350 Mullan Road, Suite 105, Missoula, MT 59808.

BARNEY IVANOFF
ARLEE -- Barney Ivanoff died on Oct. 19, 2004. He was born on May 3, 1922, in Hamilton, to Nick and Rose Ivanoff. At age four, Barney moved with his family to Arlee, where he attended school until 1943, when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in World War II. Barney married Evalyn in 1947. He worked as a laborer installing the Yellowstone Pipeline along with the Hi-Line. He started his business, Barney's Excavating, in 1960 which his sons continue to operate today. He played a major role in starting the Arlee Volunteer Fire Department. He served as an active member for 32 years, where he gained the position as fire chief. He retired as a charter member. During this time, he played an active role in starting the Arlee Quick Response, too. In 1975, Barney was involved in the Arlee Development Council road sign project, which selected historical names and installed the road signs in rural Arlee. He was an avid fisherman. He built and maintained fish ponds on his property. He also enjoyed irrigating, riding his four-wheeler, and attending Marine reunions and large family gatherings. Barney was preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Rose Ivanoff, and his grandson, Tyke Allaire. Survivors include his wife, Evalyn; his brother, George Ivanoff; a sister, Marie Chaffin; children and their spouses, Jeannine and Jim Pickens, Cindy and Tyke Allaire, Ed Ivanoff (Rena Lawson), Sheila and David Hoback, and Brad and Diane Ivanoff; nine grandchildren; and his many friends, including his close World War II USMC companions, Mack Jones and Bill Hixenbaugh. A memorial was conducted on Oct. 22 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Arlee. Services were also conducted at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Pleasant View Cemetery in St. Ignatius. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Arlee Volunteer Fire Department.

HELEN LIPPINCOTT
ST. IGNATIUS -- Helen D. Lippincott died in Missoula on Oct. 18, 2004, after an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 15, 1930, in Sydney, to Kenneth Earle and Julia Helen Roberts. Helen spent a great deal of her childhood and working in her father's logging operations, where she met her future husband, Roy. On Aug. 5, 1946, she married Roy Zinke and they eventually made their home in Missoula. Roy preceded her in death in 1965. On Sept. 3, 1968, Helen married James Lippincott and they settled in the Mission Valley. Jim preceded Helen in death in 1981. Helen was an avid gardener, loved to sew and knit and always held her family close. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Shirley Roberts and Hazel Ponton; brother Darrold Roberts; and two grandchildren. Helen leaves behind her six children: Donald Zinke and partner Marie, and Richard Zinke and wife Mary (all of Missoula); Diana Logan and husband Jeff (Stanwood, WA); Kathy Hansen and husband Jim (Colorado Springs, CO); and Gregory Zinke and wife Sandy, and Gary Zinke and partner Donna (all of Stevensville); two sisters, Betty Erickson and husband Larry (Missoula) and Sandy Goss and husband Raymond (Stevensville); three brothers, including Kenneth Roberts and wife Helen (Victor) and Lyle Roberts (Ronan); 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her companion, Bill Hopping (St. Ignatius). Services were held on Oct. 22 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Missoula.
