He was born April 5, 1948, in Hamilton to Connie and Vinnie LaSalle. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1966, from Oregon State University with degrees in English and history of political science in 1970 and from McGeorge Law School in Sacramento in 1973.

He excelled in academics and sports as a youngster. As a Boy Scout, he earned the Altari Dei Award. In the eighth grade, he was named the American Legion's Boy Citizen of the Year. At 14 he won the triple jump in the State Amateur Athletic Union competition and was the first athlete at Hamilton High School to surpass 6 feet in the high jump.

He was valedictorian of the senior class in high school and was offered scholarships at Montana State, Carroll College and Montana Tech. Instead he chose to walk on at Oregon State University and earned a football scholarship after two weeks of practice.

If he had not gone into law, he would probably have been coaching at a high school or college. "He just loved kids and was such a giving person," said his wife Barbara. "He not only coached but he'd sponsor kids and teams so that they could play basketball or other sports in leagues. He'd donate equipment, money - whatever he could so that the kids could play." According to Barbara, "His idea was to keep the kids busy and give them self-esteem. He felt that if you did that, you'd develop great kids."

He went to Sacramento to attend McGeorge Law School and become an attorney. He met Barbara Wiedel in 1976 and they married in 1980.

He helped coach football at Folsom (Calif.) High School in the early 1980s and eventually turned his attention to youth sports. He coached the Sacramento Magic, a traveling basketball team, to National A.A.N. completion in 1996 and 1997, fifth in the nation in '96, 13th in '97.

He also coached Folsom Youth Football teams to state championships in 1994, 1995 and 1997. (His record was 52 wins and three losses.)

He was a member of the Sacramento County and California state bar associations. He was the owner of the LaSalle Law Corp. in Sacramento.

A memorial "celebration of life" will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at St. Francis Church in Hamilton.

Afterthought: Rich's love of Montana was apparent to all who knew him, as was his devotion to his family, friends and the youth.

The length of life in years is not nearly as important as the depth of accomplishment, and Rich's life is a graphic illustration of the importance of making the most of every moment we are given on earth.
