Jim Dennehy, 65

James N. "Jim" Dennehy died Wednesday, the 12th anniversary of his own father's passing.

Jim was born on Feb. 19, 1939, to Patrick J. Dennehy and Leona F. (Shea) Dennehy. Jim graduated from the old St. Mary's school in 1952 and from Boys' Central High School in 1956. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Carroll College in 1961 and a master's degree in physical science with a major in chemistry from Kansas State College in 1971. He also did graduate studies at Montana State University and Western Montana College.

When Jim was a senior at Carroll, there was a tradition of the senior boys sitting at the first table in the cafeteria and "eyeing up" the incoming freshmen girls. Jim pointed to a particular girl and said to his riends: "There's the girl I'm going to marry." The girl was Fran Holland, a nursing student. True to his prediction, Jim and Fran were married at the Immaculate Conception Church in Butte on Aug. 24, 1963. During their 40-plus years of marriage Jim and Fran were blessed with four beautiful daughters: Rose, Kathleen, Francie and Maggie. Jim always referred to his wife Fran, as the "most beautiful girl in the world."

"Mr. Dennehy"s gift for teaching inspired many students. He began his vocation in Rosebud, and after one year returned to his beloved Butte, where he taught math and science for the next year. He then taught chemistry at Butte High School for 22 years.

While teaching in Butte, Jim was active in the Butte Teachers' Union. He negotiated for the union for many years and held several offices in the union. In 1970, Jim was appointed by Gov. Forrest Anderson as the classroom teacher representative on the State Teachers' Retirement Board. In 1974, he was reappointed by Gov. Tom Judge. For two years of his term, Jim served as chairman of that board.

In 1985, Jim was forced to leave his chosen vocation due to a severe and chronic mental illness, which he struggled with since 1969 and would continue to battle for the rest of his life. Jim was a manic depressive. He accepted this illness, never felt embarrassed by it, and would openly discuss it with anyone who showed an interest. He hoped to eliminate the stigma attached to mental illness and alleviate the fears that many people have. He lobbied for the Mental Health Parity Act, an act which would require insurance companies to treat mental illness in the same manner as they treat physical illness. This important act became law in January 2000.

Other special interests included: volunteering on the soup line at the Salvation Army, camaraderie at the Elks Lodge and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

During his younger years, he was an avid baseball, softball and handball player. He also enjoyed coaching girls fast-pitch softball.

Jim had a deep, personal love for Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. He was an Eucharistic Minister at both the Immaculate Conception Church and at St. Patrick's Church. Jim also served on the Immaculate Conception Parish Counsel. Additionally, he frequently served as a lector and the Rev. Gregory Burke's "lead singer" at the chapel in St. James Healthcare.

Jim was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and the fact that he was raised in the Dublin Gulch. He was the epitome of "The Fighting Irish."

Throughout his life, Jim instilled in his family a deep sense of honesty, idealism and Catholic faith. Anyone who knew him will always remember his contagious laugh, wisdom, positive attitude and the twinkle in his Irish eye.

Jim's surviving family includes his wife, Fran Dennehy; daughters and sons-in law, Rose and Brad Spear, Kathleen and Erik Nelson, Maggie and Andy Dare; daughter, Francie Dennehy; granddaughters, Amanda and Erika Spear and Molly Nelson, and his grandson and namesake, James Dare, all of Butte; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Pat Dennehy. Spokane; sister and late brother-in-law, Patsy and Al Bauer, Philipsburg; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Billy Sullivan, Butte; sister, Pauline Budd, Butte; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Leo McCarthy, Butte; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He will be greeted in heaven by his parents, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Friends and family may call to pay their respects beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at Duggan Dolan Mortuary, followed by recitation of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Church.

Memorials: Butte Sheltered Workshop or donor's choice.
