John D. North
John D. North, Billings developer, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1998. Mr. North was born in the "Octagon House" opposite the southwest corner of North Park on May 22, 1911, the son of pioneer area developer Austin North and Hattie Babcock North.
North In-vestment and Real Estate was founded by his father in 1892. In 1928 when John was 17 his father was killed in an accident at their winter home in San Antonio. John returned to Billings to carry on his father's work and many Billings landmarks, including the Ronald MacDonald house, the Deaconess Foundation house are his work. He developed the North Elevation subdivision as one of his projects.

He was a major stock holder of Lee Enterprises, parent of the Billings Gazette. Starting his own real estate business at the age of 17 he was twice elected president of the Billings Board of Realtors and in 1936 was elected president of the Montana Association of Real Estate Dealers.

He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Ashlar Lodge #29, A.F. & A.M., Aldemar Commandery #5, Knights Templar.

Mr. North was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was married on Nov. 10, 1933, in Lewistown, to Florine Eagen of Billings.

Survivors include a son, David R. North (Patricia) of Billings; sister, Harriet Kutscher of Fredricksburg, Texas; son-in-law, Boyd Strissel of Billings. He has six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be with Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist Mortuary, Alderson Chapel, Billings, on Saturday Nov. 7, 1998, at 9:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will be at Mountview cemetery.

Clifford Dee Kerrick
HARDIN - Clifford Dee Kerrick, 84, long time Hardin resident, passed away Oct. 31, 1998, in the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home.
He was born Dec. 29, 1913, in Laurel, a son of Fred and Ruth Dool Kerrick. He moved with his parents to Hardin in 1918, where he grew up and graduated from Hardin High School in 1931.

Cliff enlisted in 1943, served during World War II and received his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his service to his country, he returned to Hardin and formed the Kerrick Transfer Company. He delivered freight from the CB & Q Railroad, until his retirement in 1972. After his retirement, he was a custodian at the Hardin Elks Club for 14 years.

During his younger years, he was known for his baseball-playing abilities. He loved to fish and camp.

Cliff was married and later divorced.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Arm Kerrick-Brokke of Burlington, Wash., and Susan Dee Kerrick-Degnan of Anacortes, Wash.; one brother, Robert Kerrick of Hardin; and four grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Funeral Services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment of the Ashes with Military Honors will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Helena Ayer Davis
ABSAROKEE - Helena Ayer Davis was born on Nantucket Island, Mass., Sept. 1, 1903, a daughter of Frank Ayer and Louise Gregory (Bulkley) Dillingham. She was raised in Connecticut and New Jersey.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College, Helena lived two years in Paris, France, studying music and traveling in the summers. Later on she did museum work. She also wrote and published a complete catalog of the art collection of H. Havermeyer, most of which is now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

Helena came out west in 1935 and married rancher S. Sterling Davis. They ranched in Wyoming and then in Montana. After leaving the ranch above Fishtail, she owned and operated a small gift shop, "The Shed, " in Absarokee for many years.

Helena's chief hobbies were music and reading. She was deeply interested in the youth of Absarokee High School and its problems and activities. She belonged to a music and art group and more recently the Community Choir in Absarokee. She was an avid sports fan. She loved languages and had studied French, Spanish, German, Latin and in her "old age" a little Greek.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Davis Flanagan; two grandchildren, John Sterling Flanagan and Sheri Lynn Fallang, both of Absarokee; nine great-grandchildren, Breanne Lee, John Jacob Sterling, Lyndsy Jade, Macy Quinn, Julius Jude Sayre, Leif, Hollend, Autum and Haley Averil, all of whom she loved dearly and hoped the very best for.

Helena was an Episcopalian and a member of St. Paul's of the Stillwater.

Cremation has taken place. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in the Rosebud cemetery, Absarokee. Smith Funeral Chapel, Columbus is in charge. Memorials may be made to Absarokee Fine Arts or Absarokee Swimming Pool.

Terry James Coghlan
BOZEMAN - Terry James Coghlan, 78, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Parish Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the church with graveside services at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Whitehall cemetery.

Lydia Hulda Gertz
Lydia Hulda Gertz was called home by the Lord on Nov. 3, 1998, while in the loving care of the St. John's nursing staff.
Lydia was born in Prairie Township, Marion, N.D., on June 22, 1904, to Claus and Filey Bassen. She was baptized and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church and received her education in a rural school. She also attended Litchville High School. On Aug. 23, 1924, she married Ernest Gertz. They lived at Driscoll, N.D., and Fargo, N.D., before moving to Billings in 1953.

In her younger years Lydia worked as a bookkeeper and secretary. The Trinity Lutheran Church is where she was active in the LWML, sewing and making quilts.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967 and three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by one brother, William Bassen living in Marion, N.D. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and many friends.

Cremation has taken place at Smith Crematory. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment of cremains will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Hazel H. Vanderhoof
GLASGOW - Hazel H. Vanderhoof, 98, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Fairview with Pastor Bob Maehan officiating. Vocalist will be Shirley Collins. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens in Sidney. Bell Mortuary in Glasgow and Fulkerson Funeral Home in Sidney in charge of arrangements.

Hazel was born Sept. 9, 1900, in Spencer, S.D., to Charles and Mae Rock. Hazel came to Fairview at a young age and graduated from high school in Fairview. She attended teachers college in Dillon. Hazel married Herbert Vanderhoof in Fairview on Sept. 30, 1923. They lived on the farm west of Fairview until 1936, then they moved in to Fairview where Herbert was a carpenter. Hazel moved to Glasgow in December of 1990. Her husband, Herbert, died in 1991.

Hazel loved to crochet, played cards, and was active in church and was very active in the Rebeccas. She also enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a son, Harold Vanderhoof of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Helen Snedigar of Glasgow and Lois Yeager of Brainerd, Minn.; a sister, Gladys Barry of Omak, Wash.; 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Rose W. Ennis
KALISPELL - Rose W. Ennis, age 82, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at her home in Kalispell. She was born April 30, 1916, in Billings, to Edward and Wilhelmina Lehman Wegner. She was the seventh child of that union and the first to be born in America.
Rose married James H. Ennis on Sept. 10, 1938, and supported the war effort of the '40s with him. She was a loving and caring person. Her family and her home were the center of her life. She was a true historian who could recite births, anniversaries, deaths and special dates of her immediate and extended families. Rose loved to share her many memories. One of her greatest prides was having an article published relating the story of her family's life in Russia and immigration to America.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, James in 1991, her parents, and her sisters, Dorothy Ottolino and Minnie Chapman. She is survived by her daughters: Susan Ennis of Kalispell and Marcia Mack of Billings, and two granddaughters, DeeAnna Holmes of Kalispell and Misty Rose Mack of Billings. She is also survived by her brothers, Carl Wegner of Billings, Edward Wegner of Joliet, Solomon Wegner of Powell, Wyo., and Earl Wegner of Bremerton, Wash.; her sisters, Amelia Nauman of Billings and Mary Knuettal of New London, Wis.

Memorial services for Rose Wegner Ennis will be Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at 12 noon at the American Lutheran Church in Billings with Pastor Paul Erdal officiating. Urn burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. The family suggests memorial gifts be given to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 W. California St., Kalispell, MT 59901; the American Lutheran Church, 5 Lewis Ave., Billings, MT 59101 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Crematory, Kalispell.

Carl J. Egge
Our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Carl J. Egge, passed into the Lord's Kingdom on All Saints Day, November 1, 1998, while in the loving care of St. John's Lutheran Home staff.
Carl came into the world March 16, 1910, in Williston ND, the oldest of six children in the family of Simon and Aslaug Egge; he was baptized at First Lutheran Church, Williston, and confirmed in Bethania Lutheran Church, ZahI. He attended a country school until 1924, working the homestead after the death of his father. With his brother he did electrical wiring across Montana, then joined the Hysham REA in 1941, retiring as manager after 34 years. On December 22, 1940, Carl married Martha Dombrosky and they were charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hysham; he was a charter member, first president and long-time treasurer of the Hysham Lions Club.

Carl, a quietly humble and Christian man, never spoke of his accomplishments and self-acquired knowledge, but he shared generously with others; he served his church as treasurer for 40 years, the Hysham School Board, and the Treasure County TV District, supervising the installation of the television translator station. Carl (W7LZY) was issued his amateur radio license in 1931; he was a member of the Ten-Ten International Net, Quarter Century Wireless Association, and American Radio Relay League. Ham radio provided Carl with a life-long avocation and large group of special friends. He was recognized for talking with hams in all 50 states during the Bicentennial Year and for teaching classes in code and basic theory to help others become active Amateur radio operators. Carl was the consummate writer of letters and especially loved his grandson and his Hysham home with Martha.

Saints who went on before Carl include his parents, two brothers Olav Egge and infant Albert and a sister Agnes Hoeft, his wife Martha in 1979, and wife Anne in 1994 who he married August 11, 1979. He leaves to lovingly remember him his daughter Sharon Harris, son-in-law Ed and grandson Jordan of Billings, sister Evelyn Leirboe of Florida, brother Arthur Egge of Delaware, sister-in-law Dorothy Egge of North Dakota, many nieces, nephews, and ham friends.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd November 5, 1998, 11:00 a.m.; Rite of Burial Service following at the Hysham cemetery at 2 p.m. Memorials in his name may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hysham MT, for the Stained Glass Fund or St. John's Chaplaincy, 3940 Rimrock Road, Billings MT. Michelotti Sawyers Nordquist Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Ona Coop Price Demond
Ona Coop Price Demond, 80, our wife, mother, grandmother.
Born Dec. 25, 1917, on the Huntley homestead. Died Dec. 9, 1998, at Billings. Daughter of Wade and Emily Coop. Married Merrill (Scoop) Price, 1939. Scoop passed away in 1973.

Ona was a paralegal for the law office of Towe, Ball, Enright, MacKey and Sommerfeld. She was passionate about oil painting and loved to sew, play bridge and camp. Married Thomas Demond, 1981.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Huntley cemetery. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Heights Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

Dr. Robert M. Wiprud
GREAT FALLS - Robert M. Wiprud, 74, longtime Malta physician, died Dec. 1, 1998, of natural causes at his home in Great Falls.
Survivors include: wife, Barbara, Great Falls; daughter, Cindy, Portland, Ore.; sons, Robert Jr. and John of College Station, Texas; and six grandchildren.

Services have been held.

Mildred "Midge" Yonce Hudson
ABSAROKEE - Mildred "Midge" Yonce Hudson, 86, of Absarokee, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Stillwater Convalescent Center in Columbus.
Midge was born Feb. 22, 1912, at Columbus, a daughter of Ira and Maude McClure. She married Ned Yonce, July 3, 1928. Ned passed away March 12, 1978. She later married Roy Hudson, who passed away June 3, 1982.

Midge served two years in the U.S. Army WAC's from 1944 to 1946. She worked many years at Bell Grocery and Outdoor Supply in Absarokee. She loved animals and her home was a "hotel" for many stray animals.

She is survived by her brother, Donald K. McClure and his wife, Dolores of Billings, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and Eastern Star Rites will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Community Congregational Church in Absarokee with interment in Rosebud cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Absarokee Volunteer Fire Department or Community Congregational Church. Viewing will be one hour before the service. Smith Funeral Chapel, Columbus is in charge.

Diana Mehling Loomis
Diana Lynn Mehling Loomis, 49, passed peacefully into God's waiting hands Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998. Diana was surrounded by her daughter, Debbie, and Diana's fiancÈ, Roger Malloy, at her home. She was born on Jan. 31, 1949, to Harold F. Mehling and Betty Jean Benner in Billings. Diana spent most of her life in Billings, graduating from West High School.
Diana's five children were the love of her life. Diana was preceded in death by both of her parents, Harold and Betty.

Diana is survived by her fiancÈ; her five children, Debbie, Michael, Sunshine, James and Shannon; her brother, Dave Mehling. Her love will live on with her children and three grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and services are pending. Memorials may be directed to Big Sky Hospice.

Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Robert W. Prescott
GLENDIVE - Robert W. Prescott, 71, of Glendive, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Paul Everett officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home.

Bob was born on May 3, 1927, in Bozeman, the son of Mary and Harry Prescott. He was raised and educated in Outlook, graduating from Outlook High in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On May 29, 1949, he married LuVerna Hellerud in Outlook. Bob received his BA in music from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1954 and went on to receive a Master's Degree in 1959. His first music position was as instrumental and vocal director in Barnsville, Minn. He came to Glendive in the summer of 1960 and accepted the position of Junior High and Elementary School band director. He remained there until his retirement in 1984. Over those 24 years, he was always one of the most popular and well-liked teachers, and enjoyed seeing his many former students during the years of his retirement.

Bob was a member of the Glendive Education Association and Toastmasters International, as well as the Cottonwood Country Club and Men's Bowling Leagues. He was involved with the Glendive Community Concert Association for over 30 years and served as an officer of the District II Music Association for numerous years beginning in 1961.

Bob was deeply involved with and committed to Zion Lutheran Church for the entire time he was in Glendive, and served as choir director for many of those years. Bob's true passion in life were his family and community, music and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Lu of Glendive; two daughters, Sheryl Drewry of Osburn, Idaho, and Deborah Newton of San Diego, Calif.; one son, Gary Prescott of Polson; six grandchildren, Robbie and David Drewry, Allison, Aubrey and Tucker Prescott and Connor Newton.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
