GETER
Harry Clay Geter Sr. of 455 W. 24 1/2 Street, Winston-Salem, N.C., departed this life Oct. 20, 2000, after an extended illness. He is the son of the late Rev. William Fernell and Betty Clark Geter. Mr. Geter Sr. was born in Martinsville, Va, Henry Co., on Nov. 19, 1899. Harry was the second oldest of eleven children. He attended PCI school at an early age. He worked in several factories in Martinsville, Va., and RJR in Winston-Salem, N.C. He also worked in the coal mines in Filbert, W.Va. , for 46 years. There he met his late wife, Mary Alice Craggett. Unto this union was born fourteen children. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters. He was also preceded in death by his wife, two sons, four sons-in-laws, two daughter-in-laws, and one great-grandson. Harry was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Filbert, W.Va., where he was a deacon and superintendent of Sunday school. Mr. Geter loved to travel to various places. He was also a 33rd degree Mason in West Virginia. After retiring from the coal mines, he moved to Detroit, Mich. , and became affiliated with Beulah Baptist Church. Mr. Harry Geter Sr. moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1967 where he became affiliated with Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he was a deacon emeritus. He remained a faithful member until his illness. Harry is survived by twelve children, Evelyn Buford of Hickory, N.C, Bernice Hunt of Detroit, Mich., Betty Jean Gatling of Plainfield, N.J., Dorothy Horace of Winston-Salem, Clotile (Albert) Roberson of Winston-Salem, Arlette Harper of Winston-Salem, Geraldine (Lenard) Riggins of Cleveland, Ohio, Gladys (Rudolph) Coles of Rural Hall, N.C., Cheryl Grace of Detriot, Mich., Harry Geter Jr. of Winston-Salem, Bernard Geter of Detroit, Mich., and Fonda Geter of Winston-Salem . He is also survived by three sisters, Mabel Thorton, Blanch Williams, and Dorothy (Fred) Scott and two sister-in-laws, Geneva Geter and Willie Mae Geter, all of Martinsville, Va. He is also survived by 47 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren, 36 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. The wake will take place Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist, 795 Northwest Crawford Place, in Winston-Salem, where the Rev. Konnie Robinson will be officiating. Burial services will take place at Evergreen cemetery. The family wishes to extend its thanks to Forsyth Memorial Hospital and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center for their love and care of our dearly departed. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

JOYCE
JAMESTOWN -- Euna Mae Nelson Joyce, 84, of 264 Island Drive died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ray Funeral Home Chapel in Madison; burial will be in the Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery. She was a life long resident of Stokes Co., was an active member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church for 70 years, a former employee of Fuzzys wholesale bar-b-que and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Joyce, and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Doris Ann Whitehead and husband Charles E. of Jamestown, Wanda Jackson and husband John W. of Fairfax Station, Va; a sister, Gladys Steele and husband James of Madison, her brother, Thomas H. "Fuzzy" Nelson and wife Jo of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and 2 grandchildren, Kelly Joyce Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Jay Jackson of Elkins, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Ray Funeral Home and other times at her residence. Memorial may be made to the Mt. KILLIAN
Mrs. Martha Dillard Killian, 82, wife of George A. Killian, 228 Cascade Avenue, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 1, 1918, to Joseph Oliver and Mary Price Dillard in Marion County, South Carolina. Mrs. Killian graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School. She then went to work at the Downtown Garage as a bookkeeper for many years. From there she went to work for First Federal Savings Bank and retired from there after 16 years of service. She was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted. Surviving are her husband, George A. Killian; sister-in-law, Virginia K. Spainhour (Robert); two nieces; one cousin; and many good friends. Funeral services will be held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, conducted by the Rev. Norwood Green and the Rev. Bill Garrard, Jr. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

KIMBER
WARRENVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Elizabeth Joyce Kimber, 72, of 19607 Lanbury St., the wife of Frank Kimber, passed away at her residence Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, in Warrenville Heights. Elizabeth was the daughter of the late W. Harvey and Margaret Glenn Joyce. She was a graduate of the local public schools and N.C. A&T State University. She served as secretary of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., and later as registrar at Bowie (Md.) State College. She was an active member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, and the BMCR as long as her health permitted. Libby was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for over 50 years. She was preceded in passing by a sister, Eva Marie Joyce. Surviving Elizabeth Joyce Kimber are her husband, Frank Kimber; her son, Barrett Harvey, both of the home; a granddaughter, Nicole of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Margie Scarborough (J.P) and Cornelia Forbes (Frizzell) of Winston-Salem; three dear nieces, Claudette Boyd (Ray) of Winston-Salem, Brenda Edge (Carl) of Rocky Mount and Pia Forbes of Atlanta; two nephews, Michael Scarborough of Charlotte and Reginald Scarborough of Winston-Salem; three brothers-in-law, Marvin "Bill" Kimber (Evie), Clifton Kimber (Doris) and Henry Kimber (Dora); four sisters-in-law, Frances Dillard, Jerrine Bigelow, Margaret Thaxton and Mildred Ann Shaw, all of Burlington; and many other nieces, nephews and friends. Graveside rites will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Evergreen cemetery with the Rev. Donald Jenkins and Dr. Seth O. Lartey presiding. There will be no public viewing of Mrs. Kimber. MILLER
KERNERSVILLE -- Miss Katherine Elizabeth Miller, 83, of Kernersville, passed away Oct. 21, 2000. She was born March 28, 1917, to the late Marcus B. Miller and Ethel Sapp Miller in Winston-Salem. She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Pegram and Frances Miller, both of Kernersville; two nephews, Jerry Pegram and his wife, Nancy, of Kernersville, and the Rev. Steve Pegram and his wife, Pat, of Elkin. Also surviving her are three grand-newphews and two grand-nieces. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at the Sedge Garden Methodist Church. The Rev. Ed Biggers and the Rev. Corey Miller will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Vogler and Son's Main Street Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

MINTON
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Sylvester Prince Minton, 74, of 4715 Liberty Road died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Moses Cone Extended Care. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel in Greensboro. A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m following the chapel service at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. Mr. Minton was a member of Southeast Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Navy and was a seaman with the Merchant Marines for over 30 years. Surviving are his wife, Frances Hackney Minton; sons, Tommy Minton (Georgiana) and Bill Minton (Shirley); daughters, Brenda Porter (Charlie) and Connie Graham; step-son, Scott Mitchell; brother, Issac Minton; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home and other times at the residence. PARKER
Mr. David Baynard Parker Sr., 65, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 31, 1935, in Charleston, S.C., to William and Mary Parker. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Charles Martin. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. Mr. Parker served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department after 30 years of service. Mr. Parker is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David Parker Jr. and wife Louise Parker of Lexington, and Andy and Amanda Parker of Kernersville; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Yvonne and Dave Calverley of Jacksonville, Fla., and Denny and Eddie Warren of High Point; and seven grandchildren, David Parker III, Samuel Parker, Josh Calverley, Steven Calverley, Amy Hemrick, Allison Warren and Abby Warren; three sisters, Lois Johnson of Statesville, Betty Canty of Mt. Zion, S.C., Frances Sinnett of Newton; and special friend Miss Lynn Lampley. PEOPLES
Mr. Abram McKinley Peoples, 69, of 704 Voss Street passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born on June 5, 1931, the son of Lester and Bessie Lowe Peoples. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, and worked diligently until his health failed. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Trucking and Storage after 32 years of service. He was a member of Bivouac Lodge No. 503 and King Solomon Consistory No. 64 (PHA). He was a loving father and grandfather who loved people. He leaves to mourn their loss three daughters, Marilyn (Tommy) Springs, Deboria (John) May and Olivia (Leroy Jr.) May, all of Winston-Salem; three sons, Abram M. Peoples Jr. of Yanceyville, Wallace Cornell Peoples and Wayne Jerome Peoples, both of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Rice of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Arthur Peoples of Winston-Salem and Lester Peoples of St. Louis, Mo.; two goddaughters, Sharon Hairston and Cynthia May and a godson, Thomas Hariston, all of Winston-Salem, a devoted cousin, Nancy Carpenter of Winston-Salem; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, from the Bethlehem Baptist Church, with Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. PHILLIPS
WEST JEFFERSON -- Mrs. Emma Jean Bledsoe Phillips, 89, of West Jefferson died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the Ashe Living Center. She was born in Ashe County, N.C., on Feb. 10, 1911. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Old Fields Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Old Fields cemetery. The family received friends Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home. The Rev. Jack Miller and the Rev. Bill Ballou will conduct the funeral services. RAGSDALE
Mrs. Mildred Stacie Williams Tucker Ragsdale, 70, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000. She was born Jan. 1, 1930, to the late Hasten Grady Williams and Rosetta Weaver Williams in Forsyth County. She was a member of Cedardale Baptist Church. Her parents, one sister, two brothers, and two husbands, Robert Booth Tucker and Tommy Ragsdale, precede her in death. Four children, Phyllis T. Chaudoin, Glenda T. Bruce, Elaine T. Gill and Norma T. Gilley; six grandchildren, Teresa Bowers, Tracie McGee, Amy Adkins, Starla Gill, David Gill and Gray Gilley; and two sisters, Gladys Kennedy and Etta Huffman, survive her. Also surviving her are numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Vogler and Son's Main Street Chapel. The Rev. Clint M. Branch will officiate. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. ROSS
Mrs. Etta Grier Lane Ross, 99, of 4268 Cody Drive, known to family and friends as "Mother Ross" and "Granny," passed away on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. She was born on Dec. 25, 1900, in Belmont, N.C., to John Doc and Margaret Grier. She was a charter member of the Beulah Baptist Church since 1921. At a young age, "Mother Ross" moved to Winston-Salem, where she later married her childhood sweetheart, John Hull Lane, Sr. From this union, two children were born. Mr. Lane passed away on Oct. 8, 1955, after 33 years of marriage. In 1956, "Mother Ross" met and married the late Mr. Selmen Ross. "Mother Ross" leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Christine Lane Evans of the home; a son, John "Night Train" Lane of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Deborah (Bennie) Harris, Kevin "Catfish" Evans, Bobietta (Cassius) Adams, De'Jon (Phillip) Scales, Rodney (Cassandra) Lane, Carlis "Goobie" Lane and Germaine (Melanie) Lane all of Winston-Salem; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lucinda Williams of Winston-Salem, Mamie Tribble, Tiny Lumbargle and Christine Williamson all of Belmont, N.C.; devoted friends Toni Vance and family, Shirley Smith and sons, Eddie (Miriam) Heath, Tyron Wilson and family, Michelle Evans, McKinley Tucker and the staff of Springwood Care Center; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many, many friends. SMITH
PEACHLAND -- Cassie Sinclair Smith, 87, of Peachland, N.C., passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Union Regional Medical Center in Monroe. She was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Peachland to the late Huntley and Ella Carpenter Sinclair. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Smith. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hopewell United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Surviving are one son, Charles M. Smith of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Betty Keziah of Matthews and Mary Conover of Lewisville; seven grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Morgan & Son Funeral Home in Marshville, N.C.

SMITH
Mrs. Evelyn Miller Smith, 78, of 201 Sunset Drive. The daughter of the late Paul and Sophia Miller of Davie County. She was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Farmington.
I didn't want to quit
I didn't want sympathy
I didn't want a miracle
I just wanted to give her to Jesus.
She had gone the last mile of the way and departed this life Oct. 9, 2000. She was of Baptist faith and was a devoted member of Grape Vine Baptist Church of Lewisville until the late years of her life. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Garnette Snider of King. Mrs. Smith leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Ms. Gayle Burns of Stokes County and Glenda Ridings (Tommy); two sons, Ernest Smith (Robin) and Lee Simpson (Donna), all of Davidson County; seven grandchildren, one of whom a devoted grandson, Kevin Burns of Clemmons, "Thank You" ; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon and Wesley Martin of King and Sheyanne Watson and Ashley Wilkins, both of Arcadia; relatives and so very many friends. She also left her fondest memories with Will Smith of Yadkinville and granddaughter Deborah Martin, "God bless you," of King. Both of whom Mrs. Smith cherished and was very devoted to and fond of. She spent her later years devoted to the flea markets of North Carolina. She loved all vendors and treasure shoppers that she met along the way as this was her beloved happiness. She had too many friends and companions to count throughout the flea market business who knew her as Mom, Granny or Smitty."I am com forted in knowing that she will be greatly missed by all that knew her. God bless all of you who had the pleasure of meeting my mom, "A true angel," somehow or some where along the way." The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. STONEVILLE -- Mr. James Paul Smith, 80, of 600 E. Main St., Stoneville, died, Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at First Baptist Church of Stoneville. Burial will follow at Stoneville City cemetery. Mr. Smith was born in Stoneville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stoneville, and was retired from American Tobacco Co. Surviving are his wife, Nora Taylor Smith, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Dwight Evans of Winston-Salem; son, Jerry Smith and his fiance, Kathryn Chiarolanzio of Eden; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Janice Smith of Martinsville, Va.; sister, Jane Brendle of Kernersville; grandchildren, Mark Evans, Michael Evans, Suzanne Smith, C. Wayne Smith, Tony Smith, Ryan Smith, Jordan Smith and Parker Smith; stepgrandchildren, Lee Powell and Todd Roarke; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Norris and Rebecca Evans, and Dylan Smith. SNIDER
Mrs. Nancy Speas Horne Snider, 69, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at her home. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Snider, a native of Winston-Salem, was born Nov. 4, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Allen Horne and Margaret Speas Horne. She graduated from Old Town High School in 1949 and from Appalachian State University in 1953 and taught school in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System for 20 years. She was also an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. As a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend she devoted much of her time to serving others, teaching children's Sunday School and volunteering in the Yoke Fellows Prison Ministry. She is survived and loved by her husband of 47 years, James Earl Snider of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Paige Snider of Phoenix, Az., and David and Phoebe Snider of Taiwan; daughters and sons-in-law, Scott and Frankie Muser of Raleigh and Bryan and Nancy McNeill of Greensboro; brother, Joseph Horne, Jr., of Aiken, S.C.; sister, Peggy Carswell of Orlando, Fl.; and six grandchildren. BENTON
BOONVILLE -- Mr. Rovy Reford Benton, 75, of 2917 Center Rd., Boonville, N.C., died Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 11, 1924, the son of Rovy L. and Jane Swaim Benton. Mr. Benton was a retired farmer and a member of Mitchell's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a veteran with the United States Navy. Mr. Benton was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Travis "Chab" Benton, Earl Benton, Thad Benton, and Garvie Benton. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Gay Holcomb Benton; three sons, Vaughn (Kathy) Benton of Boonville, Donald Gray "Toby" Benton, and Randy Dean Benton both of the home; seven sisters, Bernice Mendenhall of Statesville-Maple Leaf Health Care, Dorothy (Howard) Kimmer of Jonesville, Airlene (Floyd) Hutchins of Winston-Salem, Evelyn (Buford) Bruce of Yadkinville, Ivy Benton of Boonville, Phyllis (Jethrow) Faw of Winston-Salem, and Linda (James) Zackary of Boonville; two brothers, Jim (Ruth) Benton of Winston-Salem and Hildon (Sharon) Benton of Boonville; three grandchildren, Rae Benton, Jonathan Benton, and Margaret McLellan; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Madison McLellan. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 1999 at Mitchell's Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Benton will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Marion Swann, the Rev. Dana Wooten and Darrell Parris will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GIBBONS
Mrs. Willie Mae Sharpe Gibbons, 75, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday night, October 19, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born November 15, 1923 in Iredell County to Willis H. and Della Pharr Sharpe. Mrs. Gibbons was a member and former Sunday School Teacher of Elon Baptist Church and had retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Company. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William F. Oldham and her second husband, Romie A. Gibbons and a brother, Worth A. Sharpe. Surviving are two sisters, Edna Sharpe Summers of Statesville and Ethel Sharpe Culler of Advance; several nieces and nephews, Peggy Poston, Paul and Larry Summers, Bob Culler, Marilyn Peacock, Faye Thomas, and Janice McAlpine; also several great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Rev. James R. Chatham. Burial will follow in Union Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elon Baptist Church, 3701 Rosie St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27107 or to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

HAYWORTH
Mrs. Jessie Lois Pyrtle Hayworth, 80, of 1634 Curry Rd., Kernersville, N.C., died Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born April 5, 1919, the daughter of Elder Dillard R. Pyrtle and Grace Sheppard Pyrtle. Mrs. Hayworth was a homemaker and a dedicated member of Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church. Her commitment to the Lord was evident by her faithful walk, her prayer life, and her constant concern for others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Grady Hayworth; three brothers, John D. Pyrtle, Benjamin N. Pyrtle, and Wilbert J. Pyrtle; and two sisters, Grace C. Pyrtle and Virginia P. Coe. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Eli (Elizabeth) Hine of Kernersville; her son, Roger G. Hayworth of High Point; four sisters, Dixie P. Eaton, Dorothy P. Lyndon, and Ann P. Barker all of Asheboro, and Rachel P. Wray of Reidsville; one brother, Samuel D. Pyrtle of Kernersville; and four grandchildren, Angela H. Cranfill, Stephanie H. Woosley, Bryan T. Hayworth, and Amy E. Hayworth. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 1999 at Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Elder John Lee and Elder Calvin Harward. Mrs. Hayworth will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be at Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cumby Family Funeral Service on Eastchester Drive, Thursday, October 21, 1999 7-9 p.m. The family will be at the home of Darrell and Stephanie Woosley, 1588 Curry Rd., Kernersville, N.C. Memorials may be made to Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Elder Steven Nichols, 221 East Main Street, East Bend, N.C. 27018.
