MERRITT
Mr. Harvey Joel Merritt, Jr., 80, of Watson Ave., died December 4, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on January 7, 1919 in Forsyth County to Harvey and Desdemona Eva Shore Merritt. Mr. Merritt was a member of First Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He retired from the U.S. Treasury Department and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Merritt was a member of the Piedmont Civitan Club, having served as treasure for many years, and also a member of Ardmore Community Club. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Henley Merritt; two sons, Robert Joel Merritt and his wife, Ruth of Wilmington and James Richard Merritt of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Michele Maxwell and husband, Brian of Durham; Amy Griffiths and husband, Matt of Charlotte, and Robert Joel Merritt, Jr. of Wilmington; and one sister, Martha Louise Merritt of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. David Hughes and Rev. Henry Stokes officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

PHELPS
ADVANCE -- Mr. Roy Daniel Phelps, 79, of Phelps Way, passed away Saturday, December 4, 1999 at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mr. Phelps was born January 4, 1920 in Davidson County to the late Dalton and Viola Cope Phelps. He was a lifelong member of Fulton United Methodist Church, where he received 16 years perfect attendance award. Mr. Phelps served our country during WWII from 1942-1946 in the United States Army. He retired in 1981 from Foltz Concrete Pipe Company, after 18 years of service. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lyda Sparks Phelps; one son, Larry D. Phelps; three daughters, Judy P. Broadway, Patricia P. Pickett, and Nancy P. Boger, all of Advance, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard Phelps of South Carolina; and one sister, Lena P. Winfield of Southmount, N.C. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Fulton United Methodist Church in Advance, N.C. with Rev. Jack Wallace officiating. The body will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, December 6, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1386-A Westgate Center Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. POPLIN
RONDA -- Mrs. Jessie Douglas Poplin, 86, of Hoots Road, Ronda, died Sunday, December 5, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Poplin was born February 25, 1913 in Ashe County to the late Arthur and Ettie Moxley Douglas. Mrs. Poplin was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don C. Poplin. Survivors include, one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas L. (Rebecca) Poplin of Ronda; one daughter and son-in-law, Doris P. (Grady) Phillips of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Trent Poplin, Aletha Poplin, and Stacey Phillips; and three sisters, Bessie Douglas of Winston-Salem, Virginia D. Lundsten of Beltsville, Md., and Beulah D. Reeves of Smyrna, Ga. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church by Rev. Joel Blevins. The body will lie in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. RENEGAR
HARMONY -- Mr. McDaniel (Mack) Renegar, 78, of 124 Guinea Drive, Harmony, died Sunday, December 5, 1999 at Wake Forest Medical Center. He was born September 24, 1921 in Iredell County to Avery J. and Julia Cook Renegar. He was a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and also a retired Farmer. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; three sisters; and four brothers. Surviving are his wife, Rossie Lamberth Renegar of the home; five children, Loretta Dowell and husband, Landon and Jennings Renegar and wife, Julie, both of Winston-Salem, Steve Renegar and wife Kathy, Joyce Roseberry and husband, James, and Buddy Renegar and wife, Teresa, all of Harmony; eight grandchildren, Gary Dowell, Matt Dowell and wife, Melissa, Jennifer Renegar, John Renegar, Stephanie Renegar, Katie, Morgan, and Madison Renegar; one great-granddaughter, Erin Dowell; a sister, Helen Renegar; and a brother, James Renegar. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Sandy Springs Baptist Church by Rev. David Kiser and Rev. Howard Wagoner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner Community Center, Sandy Springs Rd., Harmony, N.C. STRUPE
Dr. James Gray Strupe, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, December 5, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center, following a period of illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Vogler and Sons, Main Street Chapel is serving the Strupe family.

TRANSEAU
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Martha Mabel Keys Transeau, 75, widow of Rufus Transeau, of 115 Quarry Road, North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, December 4, 1999 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Transeau was born June 17, 1924 in McDowell County, W.Va. to Albert Keys and Alice Harmon Keys. She attended Central Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro. Surviving are three sons, Bill Transeau, Jackie Transeau, and Bennie Transeau, all of North Wilkesboro; three daughters, Mrs. Susie Adams of Newport News, Va., Mrs. Vickey Craft of North Wilkesboro, and Mrs. Elaine Jones of Wilkesboro; two brothers, Virgil Keys of Newark, Del. and Lee Keys of Millers Creek; one sister, Mrs. Jean Jarrells of Leckie, W.Va.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:00 o'clock Tuesday at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Millsaps, Rev. Earl Adams, and Rev. Billy Wagoner officiating. Burial will be in Hunting Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. tonight and at other times at the home of Bill and Carol Transeau, 357-115 Quarry Road, North Wilkesboro.

DARR
THOMASVILLE -- Willie Edgar Darr, 81, a resident of Brewer St., died Friday, December 3, 1999 in Community General Hospital. He was born July 19, 1918 in Davidson County, the son of Edgar Lee Darr and Fannie Clinard Darr. He had been a resident of this area the greater part of his life. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He retired from Belks of Thomasville with over 53 years of service. He was a member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church and a member of the Nat Buckner Sunday School Class. Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Vivian Frances Bennett of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Deborah (Debbie) Mullis and husband, Bruce of Concord and Mrs. Lisa Hamrick and husband, Jance of Winston-Salem; two sons, Ronald E. Darr and wife, Joan of Winston-Salem and Ricky L. Darr and wife, Linda of Thomasville; two brothers, Clyde Darr and wife, Mary of Winston-Salem and Everett Darr and wife, Evelyn of Thomasville; a special nephew, Bill Kanoy of Thomasville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Stuart White and Rev. Kenneth Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Sunday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, 422 Liberty Drive, Thomasville, N.C. Mr. Darr will remain at the funeral home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

DULL
Mrs. Eugenia Shore Dull, 76, of Winston-Salem died Friday, December 3, 1999 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, following several years of declining health. Mrs. Dull was born in Forsyth County on January 26, 1923, a daughter of the late Numa N. and Lillian Reed Shore. She was a graduate of Salem College. For several years, before her marriage in 1950 to Hubert Ray Dull, Sr., Mrs. Dull taught music in the public schools of Charlotte and Winston-Salem. She was a member of Calvary Moravian Church and the Old North State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a Cellist with the Charlotte and Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestras. She was a devoted daughter and cared diligently for her father until his death in 1973. She was a beloved wife to her husband until his death in 1974. Mrs. Dull was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by four daughters, Lucy Donadio of Clemmons, Jane McCready of Fort Mill, S.C.; Betsy Reagan of Winston-Salem, and Anne Baird of Royal Oak, Mich.; one son, Hubert Ray Dull, Jr. of Winston-Salem; and 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth and Robin Baird, Daniel and David Reagan, Joseph and Charlie McCready, Brian and Katie Donadio, and Jordan and Sarah Dull. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, 1999 at Calvary Moravian Church. Rev. Lane Sapp will officiate, assisted by Rev. David Merritt. Burial will follow in Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler and Sons, Main Street Chapel and suggests that memorials be made to the Music or Band Funds of Calvary Moravian Church, 600 Holly Avenue, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the loving care given to Mrs. Dull throughout the years of her illness by many caregivers. They also wish to thank the doctors and staff of the 4th floor intermediate care unit and 7th and 10th floors of Reynolds Tower of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for their care and compassion during Mrs. Dull's most recent illness.

HAMBY
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Ms. Mona Jean Hamby, 53, of Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, died Friday, December 3, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Ms Hamby was born July 20, 1946 in Wilkes County to Alton and Clarabelle Lee Gilbert Hamby. Surviving are one daughter, Crystal Jennings of the home; four sisters, Elaine Nadeau of San Diego, Calif., Melody Hamby of North East, Md., Rebecca Hamby of Wilkesboro, and Wanda Hamby Casstevens of North Wilkesboro; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:00 Monday, December 6, 1999 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 239 Champion Rd., Wilkesboro with Rev. Mike Hamby officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service, 180 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. tonight.

KALLAM
KING -- Eleanor Slate Lewis Kallam, 74, of 1183 County Home Road, Walnut Cove, N.C., died Friday, December 3, 1999 after being in declining health for some time. She was born November 28, 1925 in Moore County, N.C. to Roger Hobson and Francis Beatrice Crouch Slate. Eleanor was among the first graduating class of the N.C. Baptist Hospital Nursing School. She had been employed by Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital and had also worked in the office of Dr. Theodore Antonakos. She was first married to David J. Lewis and then to Hunter Kallam, who preceded her in death in 1998. Also preceding her in death were three brothers and a son, Ricky Lewis, who died this past July. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Bonita (Jack) Plummer of Lawsonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, D. Alan (Karen) Lewis and Barry K. (Valerie) Lewis, all of Okeechobee, Fla.; one granddaughter, Christine (Doug) Bullins of Lawsonville; three grandsons, Brian Plummer of Charlotte, and Justin and Keith Lewis, both of Okeechobee, Fla.; two great-granddaughters, Kristen and Haley Bullins; and one great-grandson, Cole Bullins, all of Lawsonville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Opal (Jim) Salley of Rural Hall and Vonnie (Budge) Gage of King; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd (Luci) Slate of Ecuador, S. America and Ira (Faye) Slate of King; and three additional sisters-in-law, Virginia Slate of Jamestown, Olene Hensley of Melbourne, Fla., and Mary Dark of Pfafftown. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church where funeral services will be held Sunday, December 5, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. James Saul, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. KINSER
MOCKSVILLE -- May Bean Kinser, 92, of Edgewood Circle, passed away Friday, December 3, 1999 at Autumn Care of Mocksville. Mrs. Kinser was born May 12, 1907 in Davie County to the late Julius C. and Mary Bost Bean. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Alvin Kinser; and several brothers and sisters. She spent her life working as a homemaker and was a member of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Kinser was a loving wife and mother, she will be greatly missed. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Kinser of Rose Hill, N.C. and Thomas Kinser of Mocksville, N.C.; two daughters, Cathryn K. Taylor of Mocksville, N.C. and Mary Lou K. Whitehead of Cleveland, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 5, 1999 at 8:00 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Neal Carter officiating. Burial will be Monday, December 6, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, December 5, 1999 at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, prior to the funeral service from 7-8:00 p.m. Davie Funeral Service, LLC 416 Valley Rd., Mocksville, N.C. 27028, will be serving the Kinser family.

PATTERSON
Mr. Michael Edward Patterson of 1044 Shalimar Drive of Winston-Salem, N.C. went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 1, 1999 at the Murdock Center in Butner, N.C. Michael Patterson resided in Winston-Salem until the age of six. He resided at the Murdock Center until the age of 39, from where he departed his life. He leaves to cherish his memories, his very loving mother, Bertha Ellen Patterson and his loving father, Ben A. Patterson of the home; three brothers, Mr. Bennie Lee (Arlene) Patterson, Sr., Mr. Reghneld Bernard Patterson, and Mr. Jeffrey Jerome (Frankie) Patterson; three sisters, Ms. Deloris Patterson, Ms. Denise (Perry) Worthy, and Ms. Von (Willie, Jr.) Cole; several aunts, including, Ms. Dollie Penn of Mt. Airy, N.C., Ms. Flora (James) Trollinger of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ms. Lillie Mae Hatcher, and Ms. Louvenia Clark, both of Harrisburg, Pa., Ms. Peggy (Sherman) Armstrong of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ms. Flossie Patterson of Laurel, N.C., and Ms. Annie Ingram of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one uncle, Mr. Jerry Penn of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Mr. Patterson will be funeralized on Monday, December 6, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church with Rev. Seth O. Lartey officiating. SALKIN
PFAFFTOWN -- Margaret ("Maggie") Moore Salkin, 77, of 1910 Lodgecrest Lane, Pfafftown, died at 12:03 a.m. on Friday, December 3, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long illness. She was born in New York City, New York on September 1, 1922 to Madge and Maher Moore. She lived in Los Angeles, California, from 1923-1968. She was graduated from Los Angeles High School and attended Los Angeles Junior College, Woodbury Business College, and Choinard Art Institute. She worked at Technicolor Film Industries from 1942 to 1953, where she became the first female supervisor in the company. She was married to Arthur J. Salkin in 1950. The family moved to High Point, North Carolina in 1968, Washington, D.C. in 1973, and Winston-Salem in 1976. She had a real estate career with Lambe Young from 1979 to 1991. She had been a volunteer with the Girl Scouts, United Cerebral Palsy, and the Red Cross. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Salkin. She is survived by her daughters, Colleen ("Kelli") Salkin and Kathleen Salkin of the home; daughter, Christine Salkin Davis, son-in-law, Jerry Davis, and step-granddaughter, Robin Davis of Kernersville; and family friends, Rosemary and Samantha McNemar. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, December 5, 1999 at the home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 1999 at Highland Presbyterian Church.

SOUTHERN
Mr. Lester Franklin Southern, 80, formerly of Avera Avenue, died Friday, December 3, 1999 at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. Mr. Southern was born October 27, 1919 in Stokes County to Frank and Elsie Southern. He lived most of his life in Forsyth County and was a member of Northwest Baptist Church, where he had been a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and an usher. Mr. Southern was a veteran of World War II, having served in General Patton's Third Army in Europe, where he received the Bronze Star. Survivors include, his wife, Christine Elgin Southern of Winston-Salem; a son, Larry Southern and wife, Pam of Rural Hall; and a sister, Marie Cheek and husband, Hobert of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons, Reynolda Chapel with Dr. Jeff Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

SPILLMAN
Mrs. Dolores Evangeline Mabe Spillman, 63, passed away Saturday, December 4, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County, August 11, 1936 to Mr. Ernest Matthew and Essie Elizabeth Sane Mabe. Mrs. Spillman was a charter member of Community Fellowship Moravian Church and retired from K-Mart after 19 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Gray N. Spillman of the home; two sons, Mr. Steven Spillman of Linwood and Mr. Christopher M. Spillman of Reeds, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Sandra S. Witherspoon of Welcome and Mrs. Susan S. Cook of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, John Gray Spillman, Randall Brice Spillman, Katlyn Spillman, Jessica Witherspoon, Sarah Witherspoon, Ashley Witherspon, Brian Witherspoon, and Madison Lynn Cook; one sister, Mrs. Julia Ziglar of Walkertown; and one brother, Mr. Ernest Mabe of Walnut Cove. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 6, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Jack Nance, with burial to follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

TIFFT
Victoria Lenecz Tifft, 83, of Winston-Salem and Clemmons was born into Eternal Life, December 4, 1999 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leonard Lenecz. Survivors include her beloved husband of 58 years, Carroll Tifft; two daughters, Julie Pais (G. Michael) of Lexington, N.C. and Joyce Sheridan (Stan M.) of Traverse City, Mich.; her granddaughter, Louise Vozniak; three grandsons, David, Marc, and John Sheridan; and a great-grandson, Jack Alexander Sheridan. A Memorial Mass in celebration of her life, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4820 Kinnamon Rd., in Clemmons, N.C., by Rev. Frances O'Rourke. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103 or Holy Family Catholic Church, P.O. WHISENHUNT
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Robert Westley Whisenhunt, 53, of Main Church Rd. of Mocksville, died Friday December 3, 1999 after seven years of declining health. He was born in Winston-Salem, December 26, 1945 to the late Webster Lee and Fannie Church Whisenhunt. Mr. Whisenhunt was preceded in death by his brother, William Franklin Whisenhunt in 1993. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Greenawalt Whisenhunt of the home; two daughters, Althea Renee Furches and husband Matt, and Nancy Carol Snow and husband, Mike, both of Mocksville; two grandsons, Nathaniel Furches and Westley Snow; three brothers, Roy, Ray, and Rick Whisenhunt; and one sister, Ruby Whisenhunt Myers, all of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Vernon and Mr. Robert Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

ALSPAUGH
Mr. Samuel Buford Alspaugh Jr., 86, died Friday morning Dec. 1, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Nov. 1, 1914 in Forsyth County to Samuel B. Alspaugh Sr. and Annie Wharton Alspaugh. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. He retired as a shipping supervisor with Sara Lee. Mr. Alspaugh is survived by a daughter, Carol Alspaugh Denton of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Hill A. Hunter of Winston-Salem; two brothers, George Miller Alspaugh and Eben W. Alspaugh, both of Winston-Salem and two grandchildren, Bradford Cooke Denton and Merritt Elizabeth Denton, both of Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Philadelphia Moravian Church by the Rev. Dr. Worth Green, the Rev. Ray Troutman and the Rev. Rennie Adcock. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. BLAIR
Mr. Curtis Blair of 801 Martin Luther King Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He is survived by two daughters, Linda and Brenda Dodd; two devoted sisters, Elouise (Hazel) Brown and Lottie Blair, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Rochelle Blair of New York City and Rufus Blair of Winston-Salem; 10 nieces; 10 nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Forsyth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Gordon officiating. The family will meet friends 30 minutes before the service. The family will assemble at 1:40 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Elouise Brown, 2324 Thurmond St. for the procession to the visitation and the final tribute. (FORSYTH)

BOYER
Mr. Charles Franklin Boyer died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000. He was born to the late Pleasant Norman and Mary Elizabeth Boyd Boyer on Dec. 5, 1937, in Winston-Salem. Mr. Boyer retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 32 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles F. Boyer Jr.; a sister, Maggie Godbee, and a brother, Pleasant Norman Boyer Jr. He is survived by two daughters, Angie Kiser and Valorie Boyer, both of Winston-Salem; two sons, Chuck Boyer of Kernersville and Ryan Boyer; two sisters, Ruth Holder and Helen Marshell. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Voglers Chapel Main Street Chapel, 120 Main St. The Rev. Sybil R. Parks will be officiating. Interment will follow at Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the funeral home.
