MEDLOCK
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. -- Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Hall Medlock, 61, died Friday, December 10, 1999 at her home in Lawrenceville, Ga. She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. on July 12, 1938. Daughter of Houston Hollis Hall who preceded her in death in 1966 and her mother, Mary Beulah Hall of Winston-Salem, N.C. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Preston Medlock, Jr., to whom she married in 1960; one son, Joseph Preston Medlock III his wife, Kimberly Wilder Medlock, and three grandchildren, Zachary Joseph, age 10, Breanna Leigh, age 7, and Weston David, age 4 all of Olive Branch, Mississippi; two brothers, Robert Jackson and wife, Penny Bell Hall of Atlanta, Ga. and Walter Houston and wife, Carol Morris Hall of Clemmons, N.C.; one sister, Margaret Emily and husband, Charles Robert Holder of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and her new Internet friends. Mrs. Medlock went to R.J. Reynolds High and graduated from Northwest High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mrs. Medlock's career included work at Southern Bell, Duke Power, and Quality Oil Companies in Winston-Salem, Orthodontist and Dental Assistant in Charlotte, Salisbury, Gastonia, and Atlanta. In her retirement years, she enjoyed ALTA and USTA tennis, gardening and her many friends on the Yahoo Internet. The family will receive friends, Saturday, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem, N.C. There will be a Graveside Service at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Forsyth Memorial cemetery on Yadkinville Road in Winston-Salem, N.C. A memorial will be established through the American Cancer Society.

MORAN
Phyllis T. Moran, 85, passed away December 10, 1999. She was the wife of the late Harold W. Moran. Formerly a resident of Rockport, Mass., she was affiliated with the Integon Credit Union after moving to Winston-Salem in 1979. Survivors include two daughters, Judith Brydges and husband, Chuck of Lewisville and Michele "Shelly" Moran of Ipswick, Mass.; one son, William Kindley Moran of Lynnfield, Mass.; and two grandsons, Dean Brydges of Asheville and Mark Brydges and wife, Julie of Charlotte. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. NANCE
Mrs. Addie Wagoner Nance, 77, of 302-C Parkridge Circle, Country Village, died Thursday, December 9, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born August 29, 1922 in Surry County to the late Brady and Bertie Childress Wagoner. Mrs. Nance was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Hanes Knitwear. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo E. Nance; a daughter, Marie Harrelson; and a brother, Howard Wagoner. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Nance Hayes and husband, Jay of Yadkinville; three grandchildren, Nicky Harrelson, Scott Harrelson, and Joy Carpenter; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Decker, Addie Nicole Harrelson, and Wendy Michelle Harrelson; one sister, Betty Hauser; two brothers, Paul and Billy Wagoner; and a son-in-law, Frank Harrelson all of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Richard Everhart officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

ORRELL
WESTMINSTER, CALIFORNIA -- Charlie C. Orrell, 84, of Westminster, California, died November 22, 1999 of heart failure. He was a native of Advance, N.C., attended Shady Grove School, and was a former member of Mocks United Methodist Church. A military Memorial Service will be held to honor and celebrate his life December 11, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. at Mocks Church in Advance. Charlie was a member of the United States Marine Corps in World War II, serving in the South Pacific in the Philippines. After his Honorable Discharge in January of 1946, he spent several years working for the U.S. Government, building hospitals in Japan and Guam. Returning to the United States, he was employed by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft until he retired in 1981. He was preceded in his transition by his father, Benny Stacy Orrell; his mother, Flora Howard Orrell; and two brothers, Kenneth Orrell of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Alton Orrell of Clemmons, N.C. Survivors include his brothers, Walter Orrell of Advance, N.C., B.S. Orrell, Jr. of Maggie Valley, N.C., and Frank Orrell of Winston-Salem; his sisters, Lucy Gunter of Winston-Salem, Ruby Blackburn of Cocoa, Fla., and Betty Sue Orrell-Arnold of Orlando, Fla.; two beloved sisters-in-law, Marguita Orrell and Helen Orrell, the wives of his two deceased brothers; and two aunts, Mabel Howard of Advance and Elva Krites of Winston-Salem.

POWELL
CLEMMONS -- Mr. William Barney Powell, 76, of Clemmons, N.C., died Friday, December 10, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Powell was born April 23, 1923 in Burke County, N.C. to Garland and Elsie Abee Powell. Mr. Powell was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and was a retired auto mechanic for Ford Motor Corp. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Quma Lane Powell; a son, Stevie Powell; and three sisters, Louise Miller, Wilma Gooden, and Mazie Bridges. Surviving are his wife, Jean Wishon Smith of the home; four step-children, Jerry Smith of Kernersville, N.C., Craig Smith of Pfafftown, N.C., Alan Smith of Colorado, and Marcia Teague of Clemmons, N.C.; and two brothers, Marshall Powell of Valdese, N.C. and Willard Powell of Morganton, N.C. Funeral Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Rev. Otis Clampitt. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. Memorials may be made to West Bend Baptist Church, P.O. Box 321, Lewisville, N.C. 27023.

SIMPSON
Mr. Jerry Norman Simpson, 61, of Stonewood Drive, died Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla. He was born August 6, 1938 in Forsyth County to the late Herman Hayes and Mabel Norman Simpson. Mr. Simpson was a graduate of Boonville High School and Wake Forest University. He was employed as an Insurance Field Representative with Equifax Services since 1961 and was a member of Boonville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Hayes Simpson. Surviving are a special friend, Anne Patterson; four daughters, Kim (Kirby) Kinder, Monica (John) Cochrane, Bridget (Jerry) Marrs, and Jeri (Tim) Rooks and his grandchildren, Colby, Jordan, Jonah, Laura, and Annie Kinder; Stabler, Lily, and Henry Cochrane; Michael, Brady, and Madison Marrs; and Emily, Jacob, and Ansley Rooks. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Boonville United Methodist Church with burial in Boonville cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at the Hut of Boonville United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leukemia Society of America, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, N.C. or to Boonville United Methodist Church, Boonville, N.C. 27011. SMYTHE
Eleanor Soud Smythe, 67, formerly of Jacksonville, Florida, and Bristol, Tennessee, died December 7, 1999 in Cleveland, Ohio, where she recently moved to be near family. She was a graduate of Landon High School in Jacksonville and Sullins College in Bristol. Throughout her life, Eleanor's sense of humor in the face of adversity and her strong Christian faith were an inspiration to those who knew her. She is survived by her mother, Margaret G. Soud of Jacksonville; a son, Jules W. Smythe, Jr. of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a daughter and son-in-law, Preston and Scott Beck and grandsons, Eric and Geoffrey Beck of Novelty, Ohio; brothers, Rev. Eugene Soud of Newport News, Virginia, Dr. Robert S. Soud, and Dr. Gary G. Soud of Jacksonville; a sister, Jacquelyn Deckel of W. Springfield, Virginia; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of Eleanor's life will be held on Saturday, December 11, 1999 at 3 p.m. in Jacksonville, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a church or charity of choice.

SOUTHERN
STOKESDALE -- Russell Wesley Southern, 77, of Stokesdale, died December 9, 1999 at his home. Mr. Southern was born August 13, 1922 in Stokes County. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Stokesdale Christian Church with burial in the church cemetery. Surviving Mr. Southern are his daughter, Betty S. Fleming of Stokesdale; sons, R. Wesley Southern, Jr. of Huntersville, N.C., Joe F. Southern of Kiln, Mississippi, and Ted S. Southern of Stokesdale; a sister, Lucy Sheehan; a brother, William F. Southern; and eight grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Brook Funeral Home in Stokesdale from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 1999. TUTTLE
Mr. Rayborn Virona "R.V." Tuttle, 71, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, December 9, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 13, 1928 in Stokes County to Virona and Nonnie Tuttle. Mr. Tuttle was retired from McLean Trucking Company, a member of VFW Post 6367, and a member of the China Marine Association. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael C. Tuttle. Surviving are his wife, Betty Cline Tuttle of the home; one daughter, Janet Phelps and husband, Gary; two sons, Gary W. Tuttle and Donald "Donnie" Tuttle all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Melody Anne Tuttle, Daniel Wayne Tuttle, Kelly Marie Phelps, and Jennifer Lee Phelps; one sister, Josephine T. Rutledge of Rural Hall; and one brother, E. Wayne Tuttle and wife, Jane of King. Funeral services will be Sunday, December 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bobby Roberson officiating. COBLE
GREENSBORO -- Mrs. Olene Matthews Coble, 82, of #5 Devonshire Drive died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. A graveside funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in the mausoleum of Westminster Gardens. Mrs. Coble was previously employed at Brinsfield Lincoln Mercury in Greensboro. She is survived by her son, Leon Coble of Greensboro; a daughter, Chris Hancock of Kernersville; grandchildren Stacey Brown, Ashley Coble, Lee Coble, Shane Coble, Scott McFetters, Jeff Westmoreland and Mike Westmoreland; and great-grandchildren Leah Miller, Kayli Miller, Morgan McFetters, Ryan McFetters, Jacob McIntyre and Morgan Westmoreland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 821 S. Aycock St., Greensboro, NC 27403 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, N. COLEMAN
GERMANTON -- Mr. Bobby Lee Coleman Sr., 68, died at his home Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000. He was born June 29, 1932, in Stokes County to Posie Edgar and Ersie Young Coleman. He was retired from First Citizens Bank after starting his banking career in 1954 with State Planters Bank in Walnut Cove. He was a charter member of the Walnut Cove Fire Department, a member of the American Legion Post #0290, a member of the Walnut Cove Lions Club for many years and a member of First Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Tesh Coleman of the home; two daughters, Kim Craig and husband Chris of Walnut Cove and Paige Reavis and husband Marty of King; a son, Bobby Lee Coleman Jr. of Walkertown; four grandsons, Tyler Stultz, Patrick Craig, Brandon Reavis and Cole Reavis; and a special mother-in-law, Jessie H. Tesh. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Burroughs Funeral Home, with Dr. Ben Gerardy officiating. Burial will follow in First Baptist Church cemetery, Walnut Cove. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. CRUISE
MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Lorena Katrina Jones Cruise, 77, loving wife of Mr. Marvin Paul Cruise for 60 years, passed away at her home Friday, Dec. 8, 2000. Mrs. Cruise was born in Surry County on Oct. 18, 1923, to Carl W. and Eva Kate Pruitt Jones. Mrs. Cruise was a retired nurse's assistant of Northern Hospital of Surry County, was a member of Victory Baptist Church and was a loving friend to all. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Marvin Paul Cruise of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Dayle Paule of Fair Oaks, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Melinda Cruise Wall of Dobson; three grandchildren, Michael Paule, Matthew Cruise and Jonathan Cruise; two great-grandchildren, Dillon Paule and Ashley Paule; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Wayne Hayes and Mary Jo and Kenneth White, all of Mount Airy; and a brother and sister-in-law, Carl W. Jones Jr. and wife Elfriede of Englewood, Fla. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cruise was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Paul Allen Cruise. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter Walker and the Rev. Garland Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.

CUMMINGS
BELEWS CREEK -- Mrs. Betty Lou Sutphin Cummings, 71, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 6, 1929, in Forsyth County to Harvey and Rena Flippin Sutphin. Mrs. Cummings was retired from the Forsyth County Garage after 18 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edward Cummings. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Cummings Brace and husband Kimball of Fairfax Station, Va.; two brothers, Donald Sutphin and wife Jane of Kernersville and Ronald Sutphin and wife Judy of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Barbara Brandt and husband John of Belews Creek and Peggy Thomas of Walkertown; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Chuck Towery officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, P.O. MEANS
Mrs. Iva Browning Means, 86, of the Brookridge Retirement Community died at WFU Baptist Medical Center on Monday morning. She was born in Flat River, Mo., on March 23, 1914, to Thomas Louis Browning and Effie McGuire Browning. She had lived in Chicago before residing in New York for 40 years prior to moving to Winston-Salem three years ago. Mrs. Means was a member of College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas F. Means. Surviving are her husband, Lynn L. Means of the home; two daughters, Lynda M. King and husband Robert of Downer's Grove, Ill., and Karen M. King and husband Ron of Jacksonville; a son, Jeffrey Means and wife Susan of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Eugene Browning of Independence, Mo. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, conducted by Dr. Charles Edwards. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Interment will be later in the week at Cedar Hill cemetery in Suitland, Md. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. POTTS
MOCKSVILLE -- Miss Eva Pauline Potts, 90, of Homer Potts Road died Monday morning at her home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cornatzer Baptist Church with the Rev.'s Richard Whitheart, B.A. Carroll, Elmer Day and Aaron Carter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church Tuesday afternoon to remain until the hour of the service. The family will be at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. They request memorials be considered for Rowan Vocational Opportunities, 2728 Old Concord Road, Salisbury, NC 28146 or to Davie Home Health Care, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028. Miss Potts was born in Davie County May 18, 1910, to the late Luther and O'telia Potts and was employed with Erwin Mills in Cooleemee for 45 years. Later she was with Home Health Agency for 13 years. She was a faithful member and the oldest living member of Cornatzer Baptist Church where she had sang in the church choir and was a member of the Bible class. She especially enjoyed quilting and gardening. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Bowens and Pearl Frye and three brothers, Ray Potts, Harvey Potts and Worth Potts. Surviving are two sisters, Mae Laird of Mocksville and Lena Wall of Advance and a brother, Homer Potts. Eaton Funeral Home is serving the family of Miss Potts.

REDMOND
SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. -- Diana L. Redmond, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at her residence in Beverwyck after a valiant 10-year battle with cancer. She was born in New York City, the daughter of the late Thorne and Kathleen Greening Lloyd. Diana was raised in Albany and graduated from St. Agnes School, Albany. She raised her family in Old Chatham. Diana was very active in the Mill Hill Auxiliary and also Our Lady of Angels Church, Albany. She was the wife of the late Richard C. Redmond and is survived by eight children, Michael Redmond of Hendersonville, Sheila Foley of Freedom, N.H., Kirk Redmond of Pittsburgh, Pa., Claudia Redmond and Shelley Hughes of Albany, Shawn Adams of Winston-Salem, Mark Lloyd of New York City and Erin Redmond Bowie of Maryland, and grandchildren Kimberly, Vincent, Cristin, Noelle, Gregory and Elizabeth. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard Lloyd. A Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Angels Church, 183 Central Ave., Albany. Relatives and friends are also invited to call at the Tebbutt Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in Albany Rural cemetery, Menands. Those who wish may make contributions to Our Lady of Angels Franciscan Friars, 183 Central Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

REYNOLDS
Mrs. Ethel Walker Reynolds, 80, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at the Springwood Care Center of Forsyth following a short illness. She was born June 2, 1920, in Opelousas, La., to Bertha Nezat Walker and Simon Phillip Walker. Her early life was spent in Davie County. She was married to Dennis G. Reynolds in 1947. Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Surviving are five sisters, Dorothy W. Spainhour (husband Ernest) of Columbia, S.C., Elsie W. Robertson of Advance, Agnes W. Rector, Margie W. Buckner and Norma Orrell (husband John), all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Melvin Walker and Wilson Walker (wife Virginia) of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Vic Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ROBERTS
Mrs. Sara Mosley Roberts, 73, of 2809 Fondly Road passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Silas Creek Manor following a period of illness. She was a native of Forest City born July 7, 1927, to Clementine Goode and Lewis Mosley and had lived in Winston-Salem for 51 years. She attended Grintown High School in Forest City. She was a very dedicated and loyal member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Roberts, and a son, Warren Roberts. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Veronica Rousseau, Phyllis (Roosevelt) Collins, Timothy (Gail) Roberts, Vickie McIver, Cheryl Roberts and Melinda (Henry) Williams, all of Winston-Salem; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Ella Mae Bowers, Olema (Ervin Jr.) Macopson and Jeannie Wilkerson, all of Forest City; a brother-in-law, John Mosley of Forest City; devoted friends, Martinez Smith, Brother Alphonse and Mary Ann Upson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at the Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church with the Rev. Sheldon McCarter officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (RUSSELL)
