Jack Ramon Catlin
Jack Ramon Catlin, 66, of Pfafftown died June 6 at his home. He was born May 8, 1939, in Ringgold, Ga., to Raymon Arthur and Anna Louise Lyle Catlin. He was of the Methodist faith. He served with the U.S. Army and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Laura E. Catlin of the home; two sons, William Jeffrey Catlin of Pfafftown and Jason Ramon Catlin of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Donnie Gray Holt and wife Johanna of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Jennifer Catlin Moser of Stanleyville, Matthew Catlin of Lexington and Christopher and Austin of Winston-Salem; two stepgrandchildren, Tonee Moore and Tyler Gray Holt of Lewisville; seven brothers, Joe Collison and wife Frieda, Bill Collison and wife Audrey, Mack Catlin and wife Mary, David Catlin and wife Monta, Jerry Catlin and wife Vickie, and Denny Catlin and wife Beverly, all of Georgia; and four sisters, Carolin Brown and husband Ray, Pat Ewton, Brenda Swafford and husband Gary, and Sharon Klein and husband Bobby, all of Georgia; and his former wife, Jeanette Catlin of Pfafftown.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. David Harmon officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Russell Elbert Boose
Russell Elbert Boose, 88, of Winston-Salem died June 6 at Forsyth Medical Center where he had been in failing health. He was born January 9, 1917, to the late Newton and Ellen Boose. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. During his military service, he completed Officer Candidate School and served as first lieutenant in the 161st Field Artillery. On April 12, 1941, he married Thelma Yarbrough. In 1945, he received the Bronze Star for placing the accomplishment of his missions above thought of personal safety. His military service was reactivated to duty in 1950 as a battery commander for the 426th Field Artillery from which he was honorably discharged April 1, 1953. He was a very active member in Olivet Moravian Church. He was serving as chairman of the Board of Elders when the first fulltime minister was installed. He was also very active on various boards and committees over the years until his health started failing. He was responsible for naming a number of roads in the Vienna community, including the road he was born on, Meadowlark Drive. Some of his many accomplishments include president of the Vienna Civic Club from 1964 to 1965, Property & Building Committee Vienna Civic Club and chairman of Vienna School Committee in 1950. He was on the school committees for Vienna, Southwest and West. He worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 35 years. While working at Reynolds, he and his wife operated two large chicken houses, where they sold eggs to local distributors. They later purchased the Moravian Cookie Shop from his sister, Grace Kelly. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Sam Boose, Glenn Boose, Roy Boose and Harvey Boose; and a sister, Grace Boose Kelly.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Thelma Yarbrough Boose of Winston-Salem; four daughters, Sheila Binkley and husband Charles, Rita Roberson, Faye Stout and husband Raymond, all of Winston-Salem, and Sherry Boose of Clemmons; three grandsons, Chris Binkley, Steven Stout and wife Ann of Old Town and Tony Stout; four granddaughters, Dawn Wrenn, Tricia Kurfees and husband James of Salisbury, Heather Faircloth and husband Mitch of Lewisville and Tammy McBride and husband Stephen; three great-grandchildren, Haley McBride, Morgan Faircloth and Logan Stout; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at Olivet Moravian Church with Rev. Doug Rights officiating.
Alice Elizabeth Kale Saunders
Alice Elizabeth Kale Saunders, 84, of Long Island died June 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Catawba County, born February 11, 1921, and was a daughter of Clarence Edwin and Anna Rowe Kale. Her nursing career included service as an L.P.N., R.N. and private-duty nurse in Statesville and Winston-Salem. She was a member of Olivet Baptist Church in Long Island.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Wade W. Saunders Sr.; two sons, Wade W. Saunders Jr. and wife Miriam of Saint Simons Island, Ga., and Carlton Saunders of Cary; two daughters, Rosanna Saunders Mallon of Clemmons and Sherry Saunders Joyce and husband Drew of Ruckersville, Va.; two brothers, Clarence Kale of Baltimore, Md., and Boyce Kale of Jackson, S.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Coy Privette officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Don Garver Hale
Don Garver Hale, 76, of Youngsville died June 3 at his home after a short illness. He was born September 4, 1928 in Beckley, W.Va. to Henry O. and Effie Allen Rice Hale. He served two years in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre. The family moved to N.C. in 1957 where he began the data processing program for Wachovia Bank & Trust Company in Winston-Salem. As Vice President of the bank, he completed a special assignment to the Bank of Kuwait & the Middle East, and then retired in 1983. After returning to Kuwait as a consultant, he formally retired to Beaufort, where he pursued his passion for sailing, wooden boats, woodworking, and the N.C. Maritime Museum. In 1999, the Hales relocated to Youngsville.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Ida June Skeen Hale and children Dana Hale King of Wake Forest, David Matthew and Teresa Faison Hale; grandchildren Katherine, Andrew and Charlotte Hale, also of Wake Forest, Jeffrey Allen and Marilee Strasser Hale of Lexington, Benjamin Henry Hale of Raleigh and Susan Victoria Hale of Wilmington; and a brother, Henry Joseph Hale of Coal City, W.Va.
A memorial aervice will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25 at the Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, 12605 Capital Blvd. in Wake Forest, N.C.
Virginia Simmons Friend
Virginia Simmons Friend, 87, of Lewisville died November 6 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born March 11, 1918, in Montgomery County, Ohio, to Landon and Della Ingabrand Simmons. She was a loving and caring person and was very devoted to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husbands, August James Moody and Jack Boyer Friend.
Surviving are a daughter, Dixie Moody Sherman and husband John of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Scott Sherman and wife Tammy, Brian Sherman and wife Valerie, Rachel Mello and husband Steve, and Craig Sherman and wife Jessica; seven great-grandchildren, Brandon, Matthew, Andrew, Brittany, B.J. and Joshua Sherman and Danielle Mello; two sisters, Luella Calhoun of Germantown, Ohio, and Lois Webb of Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in the Angell Room at Calvary Baptist Church with Gary Byrum officiating.
Joe Bullins Jr.
Joe Bullins Jr., 72, of Winston-Salem died November 7 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 1, 1933, in Forsyth County to Vera Boger Bullins and Joe Bullins Sr. He was a retired golf pro from Bassett Country Club with previous positions at Hillcrest, Pinebrook, Tanglewood, Pilot Mountain and Grifton, and then retired from Bassett Country Club after 25 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the PGA and founded the first Clemmons High School golf team. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in New Bern and a member of the Shriners.
Surviving are his daughter, Maggi Blevins and husband Gordie of Red Lodge, Mont.; two grandchildren, Saylor and Garrison Blevins; and a special friend, Doris Morrison of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. E.R Haire Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jacqueline Dorminy Jackson
Jacqueline Dorminy Jackson, 98, of Winston-Salem died November 8 at her home. She was born April 26, 1907, in Hawkinsville, Ga., to Miles A. and Ida Lancaster. She was owner/director of the Dorminy Dance Studios since 1932. She also taught for years, crisscrossing the country with nationally recognized dance organizations such as Dance Caravan, Professional Dance Teachers Association (president emeritus) and National Association of Dance Artists and Affiliates, Dance Educators of America, Dance Masters of America, and H&H Dance Troupe. In 1935, she was sent by Secretary of State Cordell Hull to represent the United States at the International Folk Dance Festival in London. She wrote a feature column in the ‘70s for the Forsyth Suburbanite Newspaper as “Lil’ Dutch Dawn.” When she was 95, a book of her reminiscences was published. At one time, she operated 12 dance schools in the area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Murray T. Jackson; a sister, Lillis Bryan; and four brothers, Raybun, Murray, Morgan and Rufus Lancaster.
Surviving are a sister, Floretta L. Baylin, and a niece, Judy Baylin, of the home; a sister, Leticia Hall and husband Jake, of Perry, Ga.; nieces Peggy Newfield and husband Steve, Patty English and husband Sonny, Carol Sikes and Linda Lee and husband James Russell; nephews Reggie and Rudy Lancaster; special friend, partner in dance ventures, co-choreographer and lunch buddy, Mallory Graham; and companion, friend and caregiver, Gail Berresford.
A graveside service was held.
Lon Edward Bush
Lon Edward Bush, 66, of Clemmons died unexpectedly November 11. He was born September 15, 1939, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Earl and Mildred Visser Bush. He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Bush; a son, Kevin Bush and wife DeDe; a daughter, Karen Hill and husband Matthew; three grandsons, Tyler Bush and Andy and Chad Hill; a brother, Patrick Bush and wife Marilyn; a stepsister, Sally Stoepker; and a stepbrother, Brian Farwell.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church, with Rev. Q. Ray Burke officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.
Edith Louise Longworth Arrington
Edith Louise Longworth Arrington, 94, died November 10 at Universal Health Care in King. She was born on February 5, 1911, in Forsyth County to James Wesley Longworth and Eudora Magdelene Turner Longworth. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Arrington, who died September 23, 2002; two sons, Paul Roger Arrington and Gary Eugene Arrington; three sisters, Ettie Rosalie Longworth, Gracie Lucille Sharp Longworth and Allie Elizabeth Longworth Nicholson; and three brothers, Permania Longworth, James Edgar Longworth and Percy Elmer Longworth.
Surviving are a daughter, Ramona Louise Arrington Adams and husband Jack of Pfafftown; a son, David Wesley Arrington and wife JoAnn of Lewisville; seven grandchildren, Terry, Pam, Tim, Lisa, Shannon, Michael and Marie; two stepgrandchildren, Sherry and Crystal; eight great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandson.
Funeral services were held at New Hope United Methodist Church with Dr. Pete Taylor and Rev. William C. Currie officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jack Hill
Jack Hill, 56, of Lexington died November 12 at Forsyth Medical Center after an illness of six months. He was born on June 16, 1949, in Davidson County to Arvin Lee Hill Jr. and Colleen Bowers Hill. He was the owner of Jack’s Body Shop and a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother and a sister, Linda Hill.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Miller Hill of the home; a son, Dennis Hill and wife Tina Marie of Lexington; a daughter, Wendy Sechrist and husband Christopher of Advance; his father and stepmother, Arvin Lee Hill Jr. and wife Gracie of Lexington; four grandchildren, Devin Lane Hill and Alex Wade Hill, both of Lexington, and William Lee Fortescue and Sarah Elizabeth Fortescue, both of Advance; two brothers, Charles Hill and wife Beverly and Ricky Hill and wife Jacqueline, all of Lexington; four nieces, Crystal Spry of Salisbury, Jennifer Woosley of Clemmons, Ashley Church of Concord and Nikki Goforth of Lexington; a nephew, Charlie Goforth of Lexington; and a special sister-in-law, Lori Miller of Lexington.
Funeral services were held at Victory Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Duffield, Dr. Randal Lenderman and Pastor Craig Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Roger Aubrey Linville IV
Roger Aubrey “A.J.” Linville IV, 20 months, died November 12 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 9, 2004, in Forsyth County to R. Aubrey Linville III and Holli Drane Linville. He was preceded in death by his great-grandfathers, O.B. Watkins, John Frank Drane and Roger A. Linville.
Surviving are his parents; his grandparents, Tinky (Granna) Drane and John (Paw Paw) Drane, Chip (Pop Pop) Linville and Dianne (Na Na) Linville; his great-grandparents, Margaret Watkins, Jewell W. Drane, Dixie Linville, Ernest C. Holland Jr. and Hannah Holland; Aunt Kasey Drane; Aunt Mary Jones and family, Scott, Brevin, and Leighton; Aunt Holly Evans and family, Al, Stephanie and Drew; and special pets, Chance and Greta.
Funeral services were held at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Russ Ritchel officiating. Memorials may be made to the A.J. Linville Fund at the Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
Thelma Evelene Fearrington Gilley
Thelma Evelene Fearrington Gilley, 78, of Winston-Salem died November 8 after a short illness. She faithfully attended Union Tabernacle Church in Winston-Salem and sang God’s praises to all who would hear. She married the love of her life 56 years ago, and together they sang the Gospel story throughout the Piedmont area.
Surviving are her husband, Carl Jackson “Jack” Gilley of the home; three sons, Carl Calvin Gilley and wife Mary Nell of Winston-Salem, Keith Edwin Gilley and wife Lois of Winston-Salem and Michael Reece Gilley and wife Tracy of Clemmons; seven grandchildren, Samantha Ann, Sabrina Lynn, Eric Daniel Sr., Kyle Edward, Jennifer Renee’, Lindsay Anne and Thomas “T.J.” Jackson ; two great-grandchildren, Autumn Nicole and Eric Daniel Jr.; five sisters, Lucy Phelps of Clemmons, Betty Branch of Dobson, Francis Brandon of Pinnacle, Geraldine Sticher of Danville, Va., and Louise King of Winston-Salem; a brother, Ray Shipley Jr. of Winston-Salem; a special friend, Sandra Midkiff of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Union Tabernacle Church with Pastor Herbert Mabe, Rev. Don Bell and Rev. Clint Branch officiating. Burial followed in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
Walter Paul Golden
Walter Paul Golden, 85, husband of Ella “Jim” Guyer Golden of State Road, died November 13 at Elkin Healthcare. He was born in Surry County on March 10, 1920, to the late Paul and Nora Welborn Golden. He was retired from Chatham Manufacturing after 41 years of service and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roy Golden; a sister, Opal Golden; and a brother, Bynum Golden.
Surviving are his wife of the home; a daughter, Bonnie Collins and husband Gary of Yadkinville; four grandchildren and spouses, Joy and Richie Neal of Walnut Cove, Nicholas and Tracie Golden of Walnut Cove, Andrew and Shannon Collins of Winston-Salem and David and Samantha Collins of Lewisville; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan Neal, Olivia Golden, Justin Collins and Avery Collins.
Funeral services were held at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Hensley and Rev. Steve Kramm officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Park Cemetery with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436.
Frank Joseph Felske
Frank “Bones” Joseph Felske, 65, of King died November 13 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 8, 1940, to the late Henry and Marie Reinert Felske in Milwaukee County, Wis. He was an avid NASCAR fan and a retiree from Johnson Controls. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosie.
Surviving are a son, Paul Felske of Clemmons; two daughters, Lynn Felske of Clemmons and Lori Richardson of Lexington; a loving best friend, Sue Tesh of King; a granddaughter, Holly Richardson; a brother, Jerry Fels and wife Pat of Ocala, Fla.; a mother-in-law, Leone Kaiser of West Allis, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was held at The Good Shepherd Catholic Church of King with Father Larry Heiney officiating.
Cherie Ann Riblett McDonald
Cherie Ann Riblett McDonald, 71, of Clemmons died January 31 at her home. She was born December 13, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, to Harold E. and Maude Bare Riblett. She was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center.
Surviving are her husband, Wesley E. McDonald of the home; two sons, Michael E. McDonald of Spring Lake, Mich., and Rick A. McDonald of Waco, Texas; a daughter, Patti L. Stapleton of Syracuse, N.Y.; a sister, Betty J. Martin of Greenville, S.C.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Phillip Cole and Rev. Marcus Portis officiating.
Hazel Hutchens Doub
Hazel Hutchens Doub, 95, of Pfafftown died January 29 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 2, 1910, in New Castle, Ind., to Nick and Turnie Hutchens. She was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church where she faithfully served her Lord. She was head diener for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Doub, on November 12, 1985; four sisters; and two brothers.
Surviving are her two daughters, Barbara D. Evans and husband Lloyd J. Evans of Winston-Salem and Charlotte D. Bailey and husband Kenneth E. Bailey of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Kim E. Leonard of Lexington and Jeff K. Bailey of Savannah, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Clark Hanes and Jason Bailey; a sister, Frances H. Allred; and a brother, Paul N. Hutchens, both of Yadkinville.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Tripp May officiating.
Harry Alexander Smith Jr.
Harry Alexander Smith Jr., 58, of Danville, Va. died January 29 at his residence. Born December 6, 1947, in Winston-Salem, he was the son of Rev. Harry Smith Sr. and Annie Scales Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked for Dan River Inc. for 26 years before retiring. He was also a member of the Groove Phi Groove Social Club. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Petty Smith of the home; his mother; a son, Nathan Smith of Danville; two sisters, Doris Monk of Winston-Salem and Veronica Crumblin of Clemmons; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel in Danville with Rev. James Stewart officiating. Burial with military honors followed at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.
Jeanette Austin Carroll
Jeanette Austin Carroll, 91, died February 2 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Winston-Salem to the late William Henry and Hattie Robertson Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Carroll.
Surviving are a sister, Mary Sechrist and husband Ralph; two nephews, Ralph Sechrist Jr. of Lake Norman and Keith Sechrist of Clemmons; and a niece, Vickie Sutton of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Woodland Cemetery with Bill Teague officiating.
Evelyn Hauser Phillips
Evelyn Hauser Phillips, 87, of East Bend died January 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 14, 1918, in Forsyth County to the late John Ellis Hauser Sr. and Laura Frances Hendrix Hauser. She retired from Hanes Hosiery after 45 years of service. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Madeline H. Long and Kate H. Keiger.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Franklin G. Phillips of the home; a son, Frankie Phillips and wife Kim of East Bend; a stepgranddaughter, Farrah Staples and husband Johnny of Clemmons; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna H. Keiger, Betty H. and Richard Speas, Dewey Long and Robert Keiger, all of King; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Audrey Hauser of Tobaccoville and Fred and Lela Hauser of Winston-Salem; half sister and brother-in-law, Jean H. and Gilbert Cooke of Danville, Va.; half brother, John E. Hauser Jr. of Providence; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Baltimore United Methodist Church with Rev. Mel Freeman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
William Joseph Sink Jr.
William Joseph Sink Jr., 78, of Lexington died January 31 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 17, 1927, in Davidson County to William Joseph Sink Sr. and Minnie McCrary Sink. He was a retired brick mason. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Sink.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Miller Sink of the home; sons William Kenneth Sink and wife Star and Ronnie Michael Sink, both of Lexington, and Eric Steven Sink and wife Florence of Pleasant Garden; daughters Phyllis Ann Wray and husband Greg of Lexington and Melissa Dawn Tomallo and husband Patrick Michael of Clemmons; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; brother Reid Sink and wife Charlene; and sisters Nell Fine and Lois Marie Sink.
A graveside service was held at Forest Hill Memorial Park with Preacher Clyde Akers officiating.
