STEVENS

WESTFIELD - Mrs. Stacie Simmons Stevens, 84, of Route 1, Westfield, the widow of Neal Wallace Stevens Sr., passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. She was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Stokes County to George Washington and Virginia (Jennie) George Simmons. Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker and a member of Brown Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Sandra Stevens of Jamestown and two grandchildren, Corey Cuthrell and husband Jonathan of Sneads Ferry and Katherine Stevens of Chapel Hill. Funeral services for Mrs. Stevens will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Chilton. Interment will be at Brown Mountain Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, one hour before the funeral service, from 10 to 11 a.m.The Stevens Family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

STIGALL

KERNERSVILLE - Emma Mae Stigall, 72, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born in Forsyth County on June 13, 1928, the daughter of John G. and Fannie (Pendry) Fletcher. Mrs. Stigall was a lifelong member of Union Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Mock, in 1988 and by her husband, Calvin Edd Stigall, on Jan. 15, 2001. Survivors include her daughters, Sue Hill and husband Ed and Penny Cox and husband Marty of Kernersville; a son, John Stigall and wife Sandi of Kernersville; a sister, Kathleen Cox and a brother, Jaxe Fletcher of Winston-Salem; five grand-children; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John C. Woods officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel, Kernersville, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Penny Cox, 9480 Glen Cross Drive, Kernersville. TRANSOU

Mrs. Bernice Stone Transou of 3128 Carver School Road departed this life Monday, Jan. 29, 2001. She was born June 30, 1920, in Danbury to the late John Henry and Ada Scales Stone. Mrs. Transou was a member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, where she was an usher and a missionary. She was also involved in several other church activities and served faithfully until her health failed. Mrs. Transou was a homemaker and began Granny B's Day Care in 1972 and retired in 1984. She leaves to mourn, her husband of 60 years, James William Transou; three daughters, Jamie L., S. Denise and J. Remae Transou; a son, Harry J. (Darlene) Transou; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Geneva S. Glenn; a devoted niece, Lena J. (Pete) Puryear; a sister-in-law, Mary F. Payne; two stepsisters, Melrose Shore and Lillian Booker; a stepbrother, James Jarrett; a devoted friend, Bleaker Ellis; several other devoted relatives, friend and church members. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, from Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, where the Rev. Dr. Seth O. Lartey will officiate. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends an hour before the service from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. The remains may be viewed today at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Chapel, 727 N. CANNON

KENSINGTON, Md. - Nancy Fishel Cannon, 65, born in Winston-Salem, died Feb. 10, 2001, in Kensington, Md. She was the beloved wife of Richard R. Cannon Sr., loving mother of Richard R. Cannon Jr., David Cannon, Martha Lake and John Cannon, loving daughter of Anna Fishel and the late William Fishel and sister of Eleanor Johnson, Starr Hendel and William and Steven Fishel. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren. Friends may call at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, Md., 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of the Atonement, 10613 Georgia Ave., Wheaton, Md., 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment is private. The family requests memorials in her name to PSP Society, Woodholme Medical Building, Suite 515, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208.

COOLEY

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Alice Cooley of Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol. She was born in El Paso, Texas, a daughter of the late Charles and Alice Jordan Cooley, and moved to Bristol in 1974. She was a graduate of Lees-McRae College and a member and past president of Phi Beta Kappa. She was retired from Inter-Mountain Pathology associates as a cytologist. She was a member of the Embroidery Guild of America, Bristol Branch, and a former member of the Pilot Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a member of the choir, an ordained deacon and a helper for the Friendship Class. Survivors include two brothers, Lt. Col. Joseph G. Jordan, USAF Retired, and his wife Helen of El Paso and Harry E. Cooley and his wife Cozie of Winston-Salem; several nieces and nephews, including Peggy Ann Fricks, Annie LaFollette and her husband Jess and family, Dempsey Jordan and his wife Charlotte and family, Gary Jordan and his wife Arlene and family, Cherlynn Cooley, Geron Cooley and his wife Pamela and Brian Cooley and his wife Rachel and family; and several great nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Blevins Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating. The family will receive friends 12:30-1:45 p.m. Tuesday at Blevins Funeral Home. The committal service and burial will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the graveside in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem with Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Mrs. Gladys Kiger Creson, 79, of Creson Circle, Walkertown, died Feb. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County June 22, 1921, to Jean Hampton and Carrie Elizabeth Kiger. Mrs. Creson was retired from Old Dominion Box Co. She was preceded in death by her husband B.S. Creson and son S. Eugene Creson. Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Krol of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Toni Murphy and her husband Allen of Winston-Salem and Sharon Kinney and her husband Jim of Atlanta; one grandson, John Krol and wife Mary of Winston-Salem; four great-grandchildren, Michelle Murphy, Benjamin Murphy, Matthew Kinney and Jaclyn Kinney; one sister, Grace Fletcher of Winston-Salem; several nieces and nephews; and a devoted family friend, Richard Brown. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Capel with Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. DOBBINS

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Sarah Jane "Sadie" Shore Dobbins, 96, of Yadkinville died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Dobbins was born March 12, 1904, in Yadkin County to Charlie and Mary Jane Hoots Shore. Sadie lived a wonderful, full life and impacted the lives of all who knew her. Being gifted in many areas, Sadie was an avid quilter, gardener, craft maker, antique collector and painter. She was Gold Star Mother, an award of an American flag with a gold star given to mothers who had lost a son in combat during World War I and World War II. Mrs. Dobbins was a homemaker and was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry P. Dobbins, son Robert Henry "Bobby" Dobbins and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are one son, James E. Dobbins and wife Jessie of Yadkinville; four grandchildren, James E. Dobbins Jr. and wife Sylvia of Hendersonville, Julia Joyce and husband Steve of Auburndale, Fla., Ennis Karns and husband Mike of Summerville, S.C., and Paschal Ray Dobbins and wife Lisa of Yadkinville; seven great-grandchildren, Justice Braind, James Michael Reavis Jr., Christy and William Crocker and David, Andy and Mahlon Dobbins; and two great-great-grandchildren, Keaton and Taylor Goforth. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Home by the Rev. Dallas Prestwood. Burial will follow in the Center United Methodist Church cemetery. DOWELL

Mrs. Ruth Holden Dowell, 83, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. She was born to the late C.C. Holden and Lillian Belle Coultrane Holden on May 17, 1917, in Winston-Salem. She was married to Hilary Franklin Reich. He preceded her in death in 1943. Later she married George D. Dowell. She was a member of Home Moravian Church. She is survived by three sons, Frank Reich of Anaheim, Calif., John Reich of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mike Dowell of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Shore of Greenville, S.C., and Mrs. Hilda Burton of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. The Rev. C. Scott Venable III will officiate. Interment will follow at the Moravian Graveyard. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

FISHER

Mr. Clinton Rowe Fisher, 66, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, unexpectedly at his home. Mr. Fisher was born in Rowan County Sept. 12, 1934, to Pauline Koon Fisher and the late Clinton Rowe Fisher. He was preceded in death by his father. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College and retired from RJR Tobacco Co. in 1987. He served in the U.S. Army 1955-1957. Surviving are his wife Mary Helen Fisher of the home; one daughter, Anne Smith of Winston-Salem; one son, Clinton Scott Fisher of Lowgap; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Chelsea and Brandon Smith of Winston-Salem; his mother Pauline K. Fisher; one brother, David Monroe Fisher of Jamestown; and two sisters, Karen Fisher Preddy and Carol Fisher Carter of Thomasville. There will be a graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Forsyth Memorial Park with Pastor Stephen Gerhard officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. GOFF

Clinton Goff, 60, of Midway School Road, Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital after an illness of three weeks. Mr. Goff was born in Horry County, S.C., Feb. 18, 1940, to Cleo Goff and Lillie Belle Todd Goff. He was a retired employee of Sara Lee Knitting in Winston-Salem. Survivors include daughter Jeanette Vause of Mullins, S.C., brother Boyd Goff of Florida, sisters Ms. Genice Goff and Mrs. Linda Inman, both of Conway, S.C., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, conducted by Rev. Glen E. Hawkins at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Burial will be at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. At other times they will be at the home on Midway School Road. Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

HAYES

NORTH WILKSBORO - Mrs. Cleo Kilby Hayes, 89, widow of Gwyn Hayes of College Street, Wilkesboro, died Saturday, Feb. 10, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Hayes was born April 19, 1911, in Wilkes County to Will and Lura Long Kilby. She was the former co-owner/operator with her husband of the Cardinal Motel in Boone. Mrs. Hayes was a member of Mountain Valley Baptist Church, Millers Creek. Surviving are one son, Garvey Hayes of Ivanhoe, Va., one daughter, Willa Rhoades of North Wilkesboro, one sister, Sina Kilby Walsh of North Wilkesboro, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 7:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12 (tonight), at Miller Funeral Chapel, 180 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Committal Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain Valley Baptist Church cemetery, 1264 Mountain Valley Church Road, Millers Creek. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service 6:30-7:30 p.m. tonight prior to the funeral.

HECKARD

Mr. Robert Lincoln Heckard, formerly of 1105 Standish Court, Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Arbor Acres, Triad United Methodist Home. Born April 1, 1916, to Robert Lincoln and Viola Boyles Heckard, Mr. Heckard was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and Draughn's Business College. He served as president of the local chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He was president of the Bank of Winston-Salem, which merged with North Carolina National Bank, where he served on the local board before retirement. He was master of Winston-Salem Masonic Lodge #167. Mr. Heckard was a longtime member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Pocahontas Sides Heckard; one son, Robert Stephen Heckard and wife Mary Jane Heckard of Rock Hill, S.C.; three daughters, Jean Heckard Sulloway of Morehead City, Elizabeth Heckard Duva and husband Dr. Charles Duva of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Mary Heckard Kelly and husband Larry Kelly of Charlotte; and five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Monday Feb. 12, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by Dr. William Medlin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church or the Fitzgerald Health Care Center at the Triad United Methodist Home. HUMPHREYS

Mr. Carl Janson Humphreys, 88, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Davie County to Mary Ann Nolley and James Painter Humphreys. Mr. Humphreys was a self-employed furniture manufacturers representative for 50 years. He attended Catawba College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Humphreys was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served on Okinawa. He belonged to The American Legion Post 55 and was also a member of the Moose Lodge and Civitan Club in Wilmington. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Duke Humphreys; one daughter, Carla Humphreys McDougald; one son, James Hardy Humphreys; one grandson, Lt. Patrick H. McDougald, of Fort Benning, Ga.; and one brother, Paul N. Humphreys of Raleigh. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forsyth Memorial Park with Dr. David Burr officiating. military Rites will be given by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. JOINER

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mr. Michael Woodrow Joiner, 36, of Heritage Lane, Myrtle Beach, died Feb. 9, 2001. He owned Socaster Diner in Myrtle Beach and attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father Woodrow Joiner and his sister Lydia Marie Joiner. Survivors include his mother Audrey Ann Jenkins Joiner; two sisters, Linda Phillips (David) and Libby Swaim (Tommy); three nieces, Wendy Swain and Laken and Megan Phillips, all of Elkin; and one nephew, Dustin Bledsoe. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, conducted by Rev. H.O. Jenkins at Reavis Funeral Home Yadkinville Chapel. Visitation will be one hour before the services.

MELLOW

ROARING GAP - Joseph Anthony Mello, M.D., of Roaring Gap died Feb. 9, 2001, husband of Suzanne R. Mellow. He was born in Mayfield, Pa., a town 10 miles north of Scranton, Pa., May 5, 1912. His parents were Orazio Meliado and Mary Caracciolo. Surviving brothers and spouses are Dr. Emil Mellow and Inez Mellow of Satellite Beach, Fla., Anthony and Eleanor Mellow of Peckville, Pa.; sister Mrs. Catherine and deceased brother-in-law Louis Allmend of Old Forge, Pa.; sister-in-law Vivienne Fulford of Fairfax Station, Va., and brother-in-law Lewis Triearick of Troy, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law Dr. Lee and Carole Janizcek; stepmother Irene Varano of Wynnewood, Pa.; stepbrother Peter and wife Gloria Taraborelli; and stepbrother Robert Taraborelli of Wynnewood, Pa. His first wife Muriel and two brothers, Dominick and Frank, and son-in-law John Tramontano preceded him in death. Children are Mrs. Mary Louise Tramontano of Erie, Pa., Joanne and husband Al Jacovec of Winston-Salem and Joseph Mellow Jr. and wife Donna of Pinnacle. Grandchildren are John Craig, Tracy, Suzanne, Laura, Brittany and Carson, and great-grandchildren are Chelsey, Jarred and Carly. Dr. Mellow graduated from Fordham University in 1934 and New York Medical College in 1938. Prior to World War II Dr. Mellow interned at Yonkers General Hospital and was a resident at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital, Mineola, N.Y., and Metropolitan Hospital in New York City specializing in Ob-gyn. In 1940 Dr. Mellow married Muriel Tricarick and lived in Port Washington, N.Y., where he began his practice until the beginning of World War II. In 1942 Dr. Mellow sailed from Charleston, S.C., to the island of Bora-Bora where he was stationed until 1944. From 1947 until 1973 as a Board Certified Ob-gyn Specialist he served in many capacities of leadership including chief of staff and chief of Ob-gyn department at Nassau County Medical Center in Manhasset, N.Y. Dr. Mellow was also on the staff of the North Shore University Hospital and St. Frances Hospital, both in Manhasset. Dr. Mellow was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Medical Association (AMA). He was a member emeritus of the Alumni Association of New York Medical College. While in Port Washington he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, an active member and avid golfer of the North Hempstead Country Club and a member of the Long Island Pigeon Association. In 1973 Dr. Mellow married Suzanne R. Varano and resided in the golf resort complex of High Meadows in Roaring Gap. From 1974-79 he had a private medical practice in Elkin and was on the staff of the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. In 1979 Dr. Mellow retired but continued to serve the local community in various ways. Along with his friend of 60 years, Dr. Joseph Teta, he assisted the Alleghany County Schools as a sports physician. He also served as the doctor for the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department. Being a great enthusiast for the game of golf, he was active in the High Meadows Men's Golf Association and served as co-chairman for the handicap committee. As a member of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta, he served as chairman of the Parish Council. For over 50 years Dr. Mellow belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Legion in New York and continued to be active in the Sparta Post of #7034 as health prevailed. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alleghany Educational Foundation, c/o Lib Goodman, P.O. Box 38, Sparta, NC 28675, so that the Dr. Joseph A. Mellow Scholarship may be established for a student entering the medical profession, or to St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Highland Drive, Sparta, NC 28675. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 13, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Sparta. Viewing is at 9 a.m., and Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Antioch Methodist Church in Roaring Gap immediately following the Mass with military rites by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

MOYER

Mr. Shelton Eugene Moyer, 40, of 4520 Ogburn Ave., known to family and friends as "Muncy," passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born Nov. 18, 1960, the son of Rebecca McCullough Moyer and Eugene Moyer Jr. He lived in Winston-Salem all of his life and was a graduate of North Forsyth High School. He was a member of the New Birth Church of Christ, was employed at Wake Forest University and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He is survived by his parents Rebecca McCullough Moyer and Eugene Moyer Jr., both of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Pamela Williams (Derrick) of Maryland, Carla Jones of California and Penny Cowell (Robert) of South Carolina; two brothers, Christopher Moyer and Calvin Moyer, both of Winston-Salem; and six nephews, two nieces, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. William C. Brown officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. ORRELL

Mrs. Helen Foster Orrell, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001. She was born May 27, 1928, in Davie County to George Leopard and Rose Barney Foster. Mrs. Orrell was a member of Dulin United Methodist Church. Preceding her in death are her husband Alton Orrell and four sisters, Mazie Melton, Laura Lee Sparks, Blanche Lagle and Ruth Reavis. Surviving are two daughters, Jan O. Pitts of Caswell Beach and Spring O. Booe and husband Eddie of Winston-Salem; two sons, Rocky Orrell and friend Anna'Jo Mannino of Clemmons and Britt Orrell and wife Terry of Pfafftown; six grandchildren, Heather Weiler and husband Jason of Mocksville, Kelly and Stacey Booe of Winston-Salem, Nikki Orell and friend Chris Simmons of Winston-Salem and Cameron and Christopher Orrell of Pfafftown; four great grandchildren, Chelsey, Logan and Morgan Weiler of Mocksville and Nathan Simmons of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Hazel Thomas and husband Henry, Lucille Orrell and husband Walter and Gertrude Robertson and husband Robert, all of Advance, Colleen Forrest and husband John and Gladys McNeill and husband Claude, both of Mocksville; one brother, George Foster and wife Ruth of Mocksville; one brother-in-law, Wallace Sparks, also of Mocksville; devoted and dear friends W.A. and Grace Myers, Elizabeth Lewis and Buddy and Mary Frye; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Fellowship Baptist Church by the Rev. Norman Frye. Burial will follow in Dulin United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance. Memorials may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church Building Fund. Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in the Kinderton development, Highway 158 across from Bermuda Run, telephone 940-5555 or toll-free (888) 940-8511.
