AYERS

DOBSON - Mr. Roby Louis Ayers, 75, of 322 Oscar Hill Road passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Sunnyside, Va., to the late Ellis C. and Willie Barr Ayers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Forces, having served during World War II, was retired from Kroger Co. and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a sister, Mozelle Ayers of the home; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Wilma Ayers of Glendale, Ariz., Dewey L. and Doris Ayers of Winston-Salem, Lonnie and Jean Ayers of Kernersville, Reiford and Gloria Ayers of Rome, N.Y., and Howard and Irene Ayers of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Level Cross United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joey Lane. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

DOUGLAS

LEXINGTON - Mr. Willis Edward Douglas, 83, a resident of Village Care of King, formerly of 214 Mize Road died Sunday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County Aug. 24, 1917, a son of Lee Douglas and Sally Marlow Douglas and had been a resident of Winston-Salem and Lexington most of his life. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville in Winston-Salem. He was married to Miss June Mary Overby who survives of Lexington. Also surviving are three sons, Ray Douglas of King and Richard Douglas and Walter Lee Douglas of Florida; three grandchildren; and a stepgrandchild. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville in Winston-Salem by the Rev. Jonathan Rogers and the Rev. Don Collins. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

GARVIN

Mrs. Diane Frederick Garvin, of 360 Retnuh Drive passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Chester, S.C., and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. Garvin was a graduate of Barbara-Scotia College and a retired employee of Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T. She is survived by a daughter, Stacey (Edward) Scott of Charlotte; a son, Artis Garvin of Charlotte; two stepgrandchildren, Ariel and Imani Scott of Charlotte; her mother, Bertha Frederick of Chester, S.C.; five sisters, Louise Alford of Roselle, N.J., Mathenia Brown of Brentwood, Md., Sarah Darby of Chester, Yvonne Littlejohn of Spartanburg, S.C., and Bernice Wilks of Chester; three brothers, Willie and Wiley Frederick of Chester and Sylvester Frederick of Chesapeake, Va.; a devoted friend of the family, Carson Grasty of Winston-Salem; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at the Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. S.E. Tyndall officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. The remains will repose at Douthit Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave., and may be viewed from 2:30 to 7 p.m. today and from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, at which time it will be taken to the church to lie in state until the service hour. HENDRIX

Kathy Sue Hendrix, 45, of Hursh Lane died Sunday Feb. 25, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was born Dec. 2, 1955, in Rowan County to Ray C. Hendrix and Belva Stokes Hendrix. Kathy was a 1974 graduate of Davie County High School and was preceded in death by her mother, Belva Sokes Hendrix Foster. Surviving are her father and stepmother, Ray C. and Norma Hendrix of Mebane; four brothers, Rick Hendrix and wife Melanie of Mocksville, David Hendrix and wife Donna of Advance, Tim Hendrix and Barry Hendrix of Advance; a son, Jerry Wayne Dickerson Jr. and Angela Dickerson of West Virginia; fiancé Steve Beard; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Pat Beard. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose cemetery, Mocksville, with the Rev. Keith Spake and Dr. Van Lankford officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. They request memorials be made to the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund P.O. MATTHEWS

Archie G. Matthews, 69, died Saturday, Feb. 24, at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem after a valiant fight against Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). He was born March 27, 1931, in Yadkin County, the son of Van D. Matthews and Stella Randleman Matthews. He grew up in Yadkin and Forsyth counties alongside his aunts and uncles, cared for by his loving grandmother, Leatha Randleman. He graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1950, where he participated as an enthusiastic and skillful basketball player on the varsity team throughout his high-school years. He attended Guilford College in 1951 and was a player on the college's varsity basketball team. Throughout his active life, Mr. Matthews remained an avid sports fan, participating on basketball and softball teams as a young man and coaching and refereeing in later years. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, water-skiing and boating, reveling in the company of his beloved longtime "cronies," friends who also joined him in his fevered support of Wake Forest basketball. Mr. Matthews owned and operated Matthews Furniture Store on Old Rural Hall Road in Winston-Salem for 32 years until he retired in 1993. He was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was a friend to all, and a devoted and loving father to his three daughters. He is survived by his fiancée, Wilma Tilley of King and his three daughters: and their families Michele, Michael and Levi Poe of Mocksville; Kim, Wayne, Chase and Brenna Mickey of Winston-Salem; and Trisha, Colt and Zach Hothorn of Naperville, Ill. Mr. Matthews is also survived by his stepmother, Lois Matthews of Winston-Salem; a half sister, Rebecca Matthews Essick of Clemmons; and a half brother, Bob Foster of Suwanee, Ga. Visitation and funeral services will be held at the Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27. Funeral services, officiated by the Revs. Stanley Webb of Shelby and Neil Eller of Winston-Salem, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28. Burial will be at Crestview Memorial Gardens in Rural Hall. Donations in honor of Mr. Matthews may be made to the National Foundation for Rare Disorders, P.O. Box 8923, New Fairfield, CT 06812.

MOCK

Mrs. Josephine "Joan" McKinney Mock passed away at Vienna Village on Sunday Feb. 25, 2001, after a short illness. She was born Aug. 4, 1911, in Erwin, Tenn., to William S. and Donna Elizabeth Burleson McKinney. Mrs. Mock was a charter member of Westview Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband Joel A. Mock. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grand-mother. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby J. and Diane Mock of Houston, Texas, and Richard A. and Rosemary Mock of Pfafftown; seven grandchildren, Tonya and husband Eric Cullum, Amber and husband Tony Matrange, Anthony and Daniell Mock, all of Houston, Texas, Eric Mock and wife Andrea of Winston-Salem, Loretta and husband Jeffrey Hooks of Rural Hall and Cindy and husband Jeffrey Wages of Pinnacle; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westview Baptist Church by Dr. Carlton T. Mitchell. Burial will be in Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, Tenn. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westview Baptist Church 1700 Ebert St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. MOON

KING - Ila Mae Moon, 89, of Rose Tara Plantation in King, formerly of Rural Hall, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Sept. 9, 1911, in Stokes County to John and Mary Stilley Wall. Surviving are four daughters, Nettie Mae Moon and Elma Mae Fishel of King, Jessie Kay Smith of Welcome and Judy Lineberry of Rural Hall; two sons, James W. Moon and wife Rosa of Rural Hall and Wayne Moon and wife Gail of King; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Slate Funeral Home in King, with the Rev. Harry Sammons and the Rev. Mark Pomeroy officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27106.

PARKER

LEXINGTON - Carl Grady Parker, 60, of Enterprise Road died Sunday, Feb. 25, at 8:49 p.m. at Forsyth Medical Center after an illness of four days. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Gates officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. Parker was born in Wilson on March 5, 1940, to Johnny Richard Parker and Ella Boykin Parker. He was employed with American General. Surviving are his daughters, Angie Brinkley and husband Renon of Lexington and Kim Parker of Pinnacle; five grandchildren, Brandon Parker, Candice Brinkley, Kayla Brinkley, Colton Lynch and Haley Lynch; sisters Earldine Barnes and Blanche Williams of Wilson and Norma Lee Winfield of Oklahoma; and a close friend, Libby Coggin of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home. Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel is in charge of ar-rangements.

PORTER

Mr. Charles Higgins Porter, 72, of Winston-Salem died Monday at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in North Wilkesboro on Feb. 6, 1929, to Charles Harold Porter and Bessie Higgins Porter. He had been employed by the medical center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Young Porter. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel when made.

REID

Randolph Macon Reid, of 1900 W. First St. was born Feb. 21, 1944, in Winston-Salem. He was a lifelong resident of the city, where he attended the public schools, was a former employee of N.C. Baptist Hospital and was a member of Born Again Free Holiness Church. He departed this life on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. Left to mourn his passing are a son, Randolph Macon McCoy; a sister, Natalie Willis; two brothers, William (Ophelia) Reid and Glendell Reid, all of Winston-Salem; an uncle, Maurice Reid of St. Louis, Mo.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Hooper Funeral Home Chapel, with Apostle Lindsey Adams Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. (Hooper)

SCOTT

HOUSTON, Texas - Mrs. Jacqueline Denise Sloop Scott, 65, passed on to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Scott was born in Elkin on May 23, 1935. She lived in North Carolina most of her life. She worked for the N.C. Department of Social Services for 37 years. Her husband was the late Harold Dennis Scott. She is survived by her son, John G. Scott of Annapolis, Md.; and her two beloved grandchildren, Megan J. Scott and Johnny G. Scott. A memorial service for Mrs. Scott will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Dr. Jerry Murray and the Rev. Brian Rainbow will officiate.

SMITH

Mr. Alfred "Sooner" Jennings Smith, 75, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001. He was born to the late Willie and Doshia Hammonds Smith on Sept. 15, 1925, in Lumberton. He married Helen Ruth Locklear on Aug. 23, 1954, in Dillion, S.C. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He is survived by his wife, Helen R. Smith of the home; a son, Jeffrey Smith and his wife Robin; a daughter, Ruth Smith Glenn and her husband Anthony; four grandchildren, Shannon R. Fogle, Kimberly S. Smith, Jason J. Smith and Anthony R. Glenn Jr.; and a sister, LuVern Burnette, all of Winston-Salem. Also surviving him are numerous friends and other relatives. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel, with Brother Franklin Brown and Brother John Presenti officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening.

WALL

Mrs. Marion Talley Sheek Wall, 73, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 16, 1927, in Forsyth County a daughter of Paul C. and Willie May Talley Sheek. Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Debbie Wall Coe and Ms. Kathy Wall Weakley of Winston-Salem; two sons, Terry Wayne Wall and wife Kathy, and Timmy Keith Wall and wife Tammy of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. N.C. Highway 109 (Wallburg Community), Winston-Salem. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WOODS

Infant DeYonna Woods of 210 Parkwood Ave. died Feb. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Services are incomplete. Professional services are implemented by Beasley Funeral Service.

WOOTEN

EAST BEND - Mrs. Annie Angell Wooten, 90, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001. She was born on March 13, 1910, in Yadkin County to M.S. and Maggie Norman Angell. Mrs. Wooten was one of the older members of Forbush Friends Meeting. Annie worked at the carbon plant in Winston-Salem during World War II. When the carbon plant closed, she worked for Western Electric, retiring in 1975. She enjoyed her quilting and flower gardens on her grounds. Being an outdoors person, she enjoyed her daily strolls through the farm. Mrs. Wooten was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Ralph Wooten. Surviving are her son, Charles Robert Wooten Sr. and wife Phyllis Calloway Wooten of East Bend; a grandson, Charles Robert Wooten Jr. and wife Wendy Reed Wooten of East Bend; and great-granddaughters, Rachel Lane Wooten and Samantha Claire Wooten, both of East Bend. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend, conducted by the Rev. Jake Penley. Burial will be in the Forbush Friends cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

WORSHAM

Mr. Thomas Stephen Worsham, 63, of East Bend, died Feb. 25, 2001, at Wake Forest University- Baptist Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Pennsylvania County, Va., June 21, 1937, to Harry and Mozelle Mayhew Worsham. Mr. Worsham was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, was retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department and served ten years with the U.S. Marshal's office. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many. Mr. Worsham is survived by his wife of 41 years, Georgia Dorsett Worsham; one daughter, Laura Worsham Monroe of East Bend; one son, Mark Stephen Worsham and his wife Melody of Mooresville; four grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Emily and Olivia Worsham; two brothers, Marshall Worsham of Salisbury and Harold Worsham and his wife Faye of Lexington; and one sister, Nancy Lakey and her husband Lester of Linwood. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Mark Corts and Dr. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests memorials be made to the Missions Ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

ZIMMERMAN

LEXINGTON - Mildred Craver Zimmerman, 87, of The Oaks of Forsyth, formerly of Craver Road, Lexington, died Sunday, Feb. 25, at 11:25 p.m. at The Oaks of Forsyth after declining health. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dan Hester and the Rev. Albert Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Zimmerman was born in Davidson County on April 27, 1913, to Julius Edgar Craver and Carrie Shoaf Craver. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in operating the dairy farm. At Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, she was a member of the United Methodist Women's Association. She was an active member of the Davidson County Home Extension Club and the Arcadia Grange. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Zimmerman on Nov. 12, 1997; a brother, Kenneth Craver Sr.; and sisters Thelma Newlander and Janice Craver. Surviving are her sisters, Marie Perryman of Winston-Salem and Grace "Dixie" Yarborough of Lexington; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home of Wade Zimmerman, 2543 Enterprise Road. Memorials may be directed to the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church Building Fund, 922 Mount Olivet Church Road, Lexington, NC 27295.
