VESTAL

THOMASVILLE - Mr. Paul David Vestal, 94, a resident of Liberty Woods Nursing Center and formerly of Bish Court died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Community General Hospital. He was born Sept. 6, 1906, in Surry County, a son of Walter Vestal and Lora Collins Vestal, and had been a resident of the High Point and Thomasville area most of his life. He was a farmer and had retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries Plant C. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the church Sunday school and the United Methodist Men. In 1926 he was married to Miss Ader Simmons, who survives, of Liberty Woods Nursing Center. Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Bill (Hazel) Briggs of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Charles (Mary) Thompson of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Mark (Peggy_ Whisnant of Thomasville and Mrs. Terry (Judy) Yates of Thomasville; three sons, Ed Vestal and wife Joyce of Hendersonville, Nev., Lonzo Vestal and wife Louise of Thomasville and Don Vestal of Archdale; and three brothers, Evan Vestal and Richard Vestal of Boonville and Homer Vestal of Jonesville. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Clinton (Pinto) Vestal. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville by the Rev. Ben K. Shepherd and the Rev. Charles Thompson. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Peggy) Whisnant, 22 Culbreth Avenue. WESTMORELAND

KING - Mr. Howard Junius Westmoreland Sr., 77, of NC Highway 66 S., died at his home Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001. He was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Forsyth County to James O. and Mary Cobbler Westmoreland. Howard served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from Chesapeake Display and Packaging. He was preceded in death by his son Howard J. (Butch) Westmoreland Jr. this past November. Surviving are his wife of 54 years Norma Jean Phillips Westmoreland of the home; one daughter-in-law, Karen Denny Westmoreland of King; two granddaughters, Leslie Nicole Westmoreland and Dana Jeneen Rawlings; and one sister, Helen Conoway of Kernersville. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Woodland City cemetery in Winston-Salem. The Rev. Yates Wilkinson Jr. and the Rev. Skip Furrow will officiate. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. today at Slate Funeral Home in King. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. WORSHAM

Mr. Thomas Stephen Worsham, 63, of East Bend, died Feb. 25, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Pennsylvania County, Va., June 21, 1937, to Harry and Mozelle Mayhew Worsham. Mr. Worsham was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, was retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department and served ten years with the U.S. Marshal's office. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many. Mr. Worsham is survived by his wife of 41 years, Georgia Dorsett Worsham; one daughter, Laura Worsham Monroe of East Bend; one son, Mark Stephen Worsham and his wife Melody of Mooresville; four grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Emily and Olivia Worsham; two brothers, Marshall Worsham of Salisbury and Harold Worsham and his wife Faye of Lexington; and one sister, Nancy Lakey and her husband Lester of Linwood. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Corts and Dr. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. QUEBEC, Canada - Mr. Glenn Herman Atkins, 79, formerly of Mount Airy died Feb. 17, 2001. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Howell Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy.

BALLARD

KERNERSVILLE - May Leona Ballard, 87, a lifelong resident of Kernersville, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Bradford Village East. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at Cherry Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sybil Parks officiating. Interment will be at Mount Gur cemetery. Leona was born Oct. 28, 1913, the daughter of Arthur C. and Bertha M. Ballard. She retired from Burlington Industries. She was an active member of Cherry Street United Methodist Church until her health began to fail. She was deeply loved by family and friends and will be sorely missed. Leona is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Roger Holder; her dedicated nieces, Betty Hubbard and Barbara Reid; her nephew, Danny Holder; and her great-niece and nephew, Farrah Holder and Chris Holder, all of Kernersville. Leona is also survived by many loving, devoted nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10:30 to 11 a.m. before the service at the church. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Cherry Street United Methodist Church, 117 N. BARLOW

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Elmer Ranson Barlow, 82, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home. Mr. Barlow was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Wilkes County to Monroe and Nancy Staley Barlow. He was a member of Center Baptist Church and Union Lodge No. 331. Surviving are a brother, Claude Barlow of Freemont, Calif.; two grandsons, Keith Douglas Barlow of Washington, D.C., and David Shawn Barlow of North Wilkesboro; a granddaughter, Tara Dian Barlow of Asheville, formerly of Winston-Salem; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at Center Baptist Church, with the Rev. John T. Vannoy officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro. BERRIER

CANA, Va. - Mr. George Allen Berrier, 74, of 359 Long Leaf Road, the widower of Hattie Hawks Berrier, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Berrier was born in Carroll County, Va., on June 22, 1926, the son of the late Elder George and Nancy Jones Berrier. He was a retired orchardist and attended Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Gladys Berrier and Wayne and Gladys Berrier, all of Cana; three grandsons and a spouse, Dwayne Berrier of Landis, Steven and Deanna Berrier and Shaun Berrier, all of Cana; a great granddaughter, Abigail Rose Anderson of Cana; two sisters, Blanche Leonard of Cana and Beulah Leonard of Mount Airy; and a special friend, Pernie Gunter of Mount Airy. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Berrier was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Bryant, and a brother, Broadus Berrier. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Elder Walter Thomas. Burial will be in the McCraw Family cemetery. CHADWICK

The Rev. Claude Truett Chadwick, a Moravian minister and resident of Salemtowne, The Moravian Retirement Community, died Monday evening, Feb. 19, 2001. Mr. Chadwick, a member of Home Moravian Church, was born in Winston-Salem Nov. 1, 1924. He was the son of the late Howard Kenneth Chadwick and Kedie Undyne Myatt Chadwick. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jo Anne Atkins Chadwick; his son, C. Truett Chadwick Jr. and his wife, Vicki Lynn; and his daughters, Lu Anne Chadwick Wood and her husband, B. Jeffrey Wood, and Leigh Chadwick Beavers and her husband, Dr. Carl M. Beavers. His grandchildren are Benjamin Chadwick Wood, Christopher Jeffrey Wood, Leslie Anne Wood, Caroline Johnson Beavers, Michael Adam Beavers, Samuel Jacob Beavers and Matthew Carl Beavers. Also surviving are Mr. Chadwick's brother, Dr. Howard Chadwick and his wife, Helen, of Charlotte; and two foster sisters, Mrs. June Carroll Mazyck of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Bettie Carroll Massey of High Point. Mr. Chadwick graduated as president and valedictorian of his senior class at Griffith High School in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., in 1945 and graduated from Moravian Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree in 1947. While in college and seminary, he was the president of the student body, the director of the College Glee Club and pastor of Junior Church at Edgeboro. He taught an introductory course in Greek to college sophomores, was secretary of the Comenius Club and was selected Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1945. His seminary thesis was entitled, "A Study of Evangelism in the Moravian Church". In 1947, upon graduation from seminary, he received the John David Bishop award for overall excellence. He was ordained into the Moravian ministry June 15, 1947 by the late Bishop J. Kenneth Pfohl and consecrated a presbyter, the second order of the church by Bishop Pfohl on Dec. 30, 1951. Mr. Chadwick served the Moravian church for 35 years. He was called to Bethabara and Rural Hall Moravian Churches from 1947 to 1949 when it was a dual pastorate. He then served Friedberg Moravian Church from 1949 to 1952, Friedland Moravian Church, from 1952 to 1961, Calvary Moravian Church, from 1961 to 1964, Rural Hall Moravian Church, from 1964 to 1975 and Konnoak Hills Moravian Church from 1975 to 1982. He also helped in the establishment of Park Road Moravian Church in Charlotte in 1961. He was active in the Moravian Church, Southern Province, serving as a member of committees and commissions as a trustee of Salem Academy and College, the Board of World Missions of the Moravian Church in America, as director of the Provincial Mission Society and of the Moravian Book and Gift Shop. He was involved in the camp ministry of the church and conducted preaching missions throughout the Northern and Southern Provinces. The governing body of the church, the Provincial Elder's Conference, appointed him a delegate to the Fifth General Assembly of the World Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1975, and in 1976 he represented the Southern Province at the U.S. Conference of the World Council of Churches. He was the first chaplain of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department, serving from 1971 to 1985, during the terms of office of Sheriff Manly Lancaster and Sheriff Preston Oldham. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at Home Moravian Church, followed by the burial service at Bethania Moravian Church. CRANFILL

BOONVILLE - Mrs. Polly Louise Stanley Cranfill, 80, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Cranfill was born July 1, 1920, in Surry County to the Rev. Raleigh Stanley and Laura Jane Seymour Stanley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Odell Cranfill; a daughter, Belinda Louise Cranfill; four brothers; and five sisters. Surviving are two daughters, Betty Adams and husband Bobby of Pfafftown, and Bonnie Oliver and husband Verlin of Jonesville; three sons, Toby Cranfill and wife Ellen, Johnny Cranfill and H.R. Cranfill, all of Jonesville; two brothers, Harry Raleigh Stanley of Georgia and Bill Stanley of Rural Hall; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grand-children; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Verlin Oliver. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville, and at other times at Polly's Apartment, 518 W. EAGLE

Mr. Billy Benton Eagle Jr., 42, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at his residence. He was born to Billy Benton Eagle Sr. and Mary Louise Kincade Eagle on May 2, 1958, in Salisbury. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and writing poetry. He attended First Assembly of God Church in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, who he married Jan. 6, 1997, Ceanzy D. Eagle of the home; four sons, Billy Eagle III of Winston-Salem, Paul Eagle and Stephen Eagle of Salisbury and Timothy Eagle of Statesville; a daughter, Elizabeth Eagle of Statesville; his parents, Billy Benton and Mary Louise Eagle Sr. of Salisbury; and two brothers, Larry Dean Eagle of Spencer and Ricky Eagle of Woodleaf. Numerous friends and other relatives also survive him. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Vogler & Son's Reynolda Road Chapel, with the Rev. James Baker officiating. Interment will be at Macedonia Baptist Church Cem-etery in Tobaccoville. The family will receive friends before the service from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. HOGUE

Mrs. Pauline Blackburn Hogue, 80, formerly of 3708 Yarbrough Ave., died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Manor House. Mrs. Hogue was born Feb. 5, 1921, to William Offie and Lillie Blackburn and grew up in Wilkes County. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with over 40 years of service. Mrs. Hogue was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy H. Hogue Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Connie H. Turner of Walkertown; two grandchildren, Sean Turner of Walkertown and Scott Hicks of Kernersville; and a brother, Ralph Blackburn of Millers Creek. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Perry Mobley. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. HUDSON

ELKIN - Mr. N. Jackson "Jack" Hudson, 82, of 116 Ridge St., died Tuesday morning at Yadkin Nursing Center. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday Feb. 22, 2001, at Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mr. Hudson was born in Surry County on July 4, 1918, to Ambrose and Mallie Lou Creed Hudson. He was formerly employed by Chatham Manufacturing. Co. and operated Wheaton Van Lines Moving Co. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Powell Hudson in 1977. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Spain Hudson of the home; two daughters, Elsie (John) Yates of Pfafftown and Nancy Satterfield of Yadkinville; a son, Jimmy Lee (Charlene) Hudson of Mocksville; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grand-children; two sisters, Lorene Hudson and Thelma Hudson of Mount Airy; two brothers, Tommy (Helen) Hudson and James Hudson of Mount Airy; three half brothers; three half sisters; two stepdaughters, Margaret (Win-frey) Caudle of State Road and Bonnie (Dean) Blackburn of Elkin; and a stepson, Jimmy Shepherd of Maryland. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

KETCHIE

James Luther Ketchie, 71, beloved husband, father and grandfather died early Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, after a six-month illness. He was born March 6, 1929, in Yadkin County and grew up in Winston-Salem, where he attended High Point College and was in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He spent his entire career in management and retired in 1991 from Gulton/-Femco Industries. He was a member of St. Timothy's Epis-copal Church, where together with his wife, Margaret, they raised their son and two daughters in the Christian faith. Mr. Ketchie was a great lover of family, the outdoors and gardening, and will forever be remembered by friends and family for his warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and tales of golf, fishing and other exploits. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Mock Ketchie; his son, James Michael Ketchie of Winston-Salem; and his daugh-ters, Melanie Ketchie Carlson of Winston-Salem and Christina Ketchie Stearns of Greensboro. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Lee Ketchie of Orlando, Fla. and five grandchildren. A reception and celebration of Mr. Ketchie's life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the home of Ken and Melanie Carlson, 1281 Chester Road, Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. The family asks that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made either to the Rector's Discretionary Fund at St. Tim-othy's Episcopal Church or to the American Cancer Society.

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mr. James Samuel Key, 85, the husband of Geneva Armstrong Key of 644 Armstrong Road, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mr. Key was born May 2, 1915, in Surry County to Gabriel and Ida Mae Boyles Key. Mr. Key was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was member of VFW Post 9436 Pilot Mountain, was past master and a member of Ararat Masonic Lodge No. 558 A.F.&A.M., a member of the South Westfield Ruritan Club, a retired farmer and a member and deacon of Simmon's Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Geneva Armstrong Key of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Donn R. Key of Pilot Mountain and Samuel H. Key and wife Cynthia of Troutville, Va.; three grand-children, Lori Key, Hollie Key and Ryan Key; six sisters, Eva Armstrong of Ararat, Verla Peele of Mount Airy, Sadie Harris and Betty Linthicum of Sophia, Ruth Stack of Albany, Ga., and Myrtle Peele of Ararat; three brothers, the Rev. Paul Key of Pilot Mountain, John Key of Ararat and Frank Key of Trinity Road; and a special sister-in-law, Goldie Simmons of Pilot Mountain. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Simmon's Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stewart Mauck and the Rev. Fred Chilton officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Burial Rights conducted by Ararat Lodge No. 558 A.F.&A.M., Ararat, and full military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019, Mount Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, Feb. 21, 2001, and other times at the home of Mr. Key, 644 Armstrong Road, Pilot Mountain. OLIVER

Mr. Robert Benjamin Oliver Jr. of 2778 Kingsdale Court, was born the proud son of the late Robert Benjamin and Dessie Coleman Oliver. He attended the public schools in Winston-Salem and later moved to Washington, D.C. where he lived for 36 years. He was an employee with Amtrak trains and worked until his health failed and he moved back to Winston-Salem in 1998. Mr. Oliver departed this life Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the WFU Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Second New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Zavious Pratt officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. He is survived by his wife, Mattie Alexander Oliver; a daughter, Lisa Patrece Oliver of Winston-Salem; two sons, Lamard Patrick Oliver of Washington, D.C., and Lamar Pierre Oliver of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren who loved him dearly, Kyle Anderson, Lamarra, Lamard and Laron Contee; four sisters, Cora Harper, Rudena Bethea, Isceola Powers and Sandra (Harvey) Eldridge all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Juan Francisco "Val" Valadez, 79, passed away Feb. 19, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in El Paso, Texas, to Francisco and Elvira Rizo Valadez. Mr. Valadez resided in Winston-Salem for 37 years. He retired from AT&T/Western Electric after 31 years of service. Mr. Valadez served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of St. Leo's the Great Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Estela Rivera Valadez of Winston-Salem; son Juan Felipe Valadez and wife Cynthia of River Ridge, La.; son Francisco Valadez and wife Laura of Asheboro; daughter, Maria Valadez Pistole of Jeffersonville, Ind.; son, Edmundo Blas Valadez of Austin, Texas; sister Ana Valadez de Anda and husband Celso of El Paso, Texas; and four grandchildren, Lisa Marie Valadez and Juan Joseph Valadez of Miami, Fla., Mercedes O'Donnell Valadez of Austin, Texas, and Robert Sheridan Pistole of Jeffersonville, Ind. Mr. Valadez is loved dearly by his family and all his friends. A memorial mass will be held at 11a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at St Leo's the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, 27104. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St Leo's the Great Catholic Church.
