Mrs. Hough, the daughter of the late Josie Duncan and Agnes Pender Ruthven of the Douglas Ruthven Plantation in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, was born Oct. 12, 1922. She attended school in Charlotte and had a long career as the finance officer of the Lacy J. Miller Co. After her retirement she traveled extensively worldwide and later devoted her energies in support of the needy in the community. She served with numerous volunteer groups including Contact and Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Hough began her long journey in family genealogical research, and pursued the centuries of their migration from Huntingtower Castle in Perth, Scotland, to the Isle of Wight, Va., by 1660 and on to South Carolina in 1837 to the plantation where she spent her childhood. Other migrations took other family members to Mississippi and Alabama. Mrs. Hough followed their migrations with any relative with a remote interest in ancestry, and persuaded them to join her in the pilgrimage to cemeteries where they washed and cleaned the tombstones and made pictures of the marker. In 1999, she sponsored the first Ruthven family reunion. Her enthusiasm had generated so much interest that more than 100 relatives attended to share pictures of several generations, which she organized and presented a copy to all interested relatives. Every form of generosity and charity and kindness met in one woman, and that woman was a Christian. At First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school and sang in the senior choir. She created an enthusiastic atmosphere in all phases of her life. Her husband, Modie Blair Hough, who was the assistant manager of Belk Department Store, preceded her in death.
