BECHS

Mrs. Ludmilla Janshevski Bechs, 83, of Winston-Salem died June 3, 2001, at Britthaven of Kernersville. Mrs. Bechs was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., to Ernest and Olga Janshevski. Her husband, Voldemars Bechs, preceded her in death. A daughter, Irene Jacobs and husband Larry of Lexington; a son, Ed Bechs and wife Kathy of Woodbury, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Ryan, Kris, Jessica and Katie, survive her. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Carolina Piedmont NC Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements. The family would like to give a special thank you to all the staff at Britthaven Nursing Home.

BENNETT

TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. Paul Arthur Bennett, 69, of 1249 Rierson Road passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 11, 1932, in Stokes County to Charlie Columbus and Rendy Bullins Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a retired carpenter and farmer and of the Primitive Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Tucker Bennett of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and David Ingram and Sandra and Dannie Tuttle, all of Tobaccoville; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mattie Lee Mabe of King, Mary Scheppner of Fresno, Calif., Irene Smith of King, Alice Bastian and Margaret Helsabeck, both of Tobaccoville; and a brother, Clarence Bennett of King. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by a son, Billy Gray Bennett. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Elder Vance Jones and the Rev. Howard Tucker. Mr. Bennett will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the services from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016. The Bennett family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

BLACKWELL

Mrs. Avis Richardson Blackwell, 55, died at her home Sunday afternoon. She was born in Winston-Salem on Dec. 12, 1945, to Champ C. Richardson and Polly Williams Richardson. Since 1965 Mrs. Blackwell had worked as an oncology nurse at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was an avid gardener, reader and lover of nature. She was a lifelong member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Ray D. Richardson. Surviving are her husband, Curtis H. Blackwell of the home; her son, Norman Hiatt and wife Kim; two daughters, Derenda Wiener and Julia Blackwell; a grandson, Chase Hiatt; a granddaughter, Haley Hiatt; a brother, C. Clark Richardson and wife Nancy; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved her. An informal service celebrating Avis' life will be held at Maple Springs United Methodist Church in Craven Hall on Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Robert Scott. The family will receive friends following the service until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2569 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or to Cancer Patient Support Program, WFU Cancer Center, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157; or to the Lung Cancer Fund, c/o Dr. Bayard Powell, Hematology-Oncology Department, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1082. BODSFORD

LEWISVILLE - Miss Rosa Lou Bodsford, 69, died Sunday night, June 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 4, 1932, in Forsyth County to William Gideon and Sallie Myers Bodsford. Miss Bodsford was a self-employed bookkeeper and during tax season worked for H&R Block. She was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Bennett and a brother, Horace Bodsford. Surviving are two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Nancy Bodsford of Winston-Salem and W.G. and Connie Bodsford of Denver, N.C.; also five nieces and three nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Harmony Grove United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. David Cook and the Rev. Jimmy Myers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harmony Grove United Methodist Church, 5041 Styers Ferry Road, Lewisville, NC 27023. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the Bodsford family.

GALLINS

Mr. Paul John Gallins, 74, of Winston-Salem, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Kalesmeno-Monastiraki, Greece, to the late John and Georgia Karagiannis Gallins. Mr. Gallins immigrated to the United States in 1947 and was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Velouchi Association and the Kalesmeno Society. He was owner and operator of Jolly House Coffee Shop, opened Dockside Seafood in Clemmons and Oyster Bay in Winston-Salem, retiring in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Maria Tsiolkas Gallins of the home; two sons, John Paul Gallins and wife Maria and Teddy Paul Gallins and wife Helen; a daughter, Georgia G. Bobotsiares and husband Stavro; seven grandchildren, Pete, Romalea and Andrew Bobotsiares, Paul John, Tina, Maria and Paul Gallins; a sister, Alice Piedad, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jim John Gallins of Newport News, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Greek Orthodox Church with Father Demetri Kangelaris, Father Dennis Canavos, Father George Kiricoples and Father George Vlahos officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with a Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church, 435 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. GARDNER

ORANGE PARK, Fla. - Mr. Burton Guy Gardner, 70, died suddenly on May 31, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. After his graduation from Central High School, La Crosse, Wis., he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in October 1948, serving in the Aleutians during the Korean conflict. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and, having been wounded in Vietnam, Master Sergeant Gardner was retired on April 1, 1971, after 22 years of honorable service to his country. He was awarded the Purple Heart and various other decorations for merit. He enjoyed a second career in the Department of Defense, retiring from the Naval Aviation Depot at Cherry Point in March 1986. Preceding him in death were his parents, Mabel Knutson Gardner and Guy Henry Gardner of La Crosse, Wis., and a granddaughter, Darlene Clara Peszko of Greenville. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Clara Ruby Baumbach Gardner of the home, married on June 7, 1952, in Norwalk, Wis.; a son, Barry Wayne Gardner and wife Pamela of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Wendy Lee Gardner Hunt and husband Nelson of Greenville; six grandchildren, Carolyn Elizabeth Gardner of Raleigh, Katherine Brett Gardner of Winston-Salem, Paul James Reigner and wife Kimberly of Orange Park, Fla., John Burton Peszko, Aimee Marie Peszko and Alyssa Lee Hunt of Greenville; three great-grandchildren, Austin James Reigner, Samuel Adam Reigner and Damon Paul Reigner of Orange Park, Fla.; and brothers Maynard Gardner of Onalaska, Wis., and Howard Gardner of La Crosse, Wis. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Association of Uniform Services, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church serving on various boards, as an elder and Council member. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 6551 Argyle Forest Blvd., Jacksonville, Fla., with Pastor Peter Prange officiating. Burial will follow at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Precious Lambs Pre-K School.

GEORGE

WESTFIELD - Mrs. Ola Adaline Collins George, 97, widow of David Patterson George, of 8385 N.C. Highway 89 W. passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born Feb. 18, 1904, in Patrick County, Va., to Giles Marion and Nancy Arilla Handy Collins. She married David P. George on Dec. 25, 1927. David preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1979. Mrs. George was a homemaker, farmer and a member of Francisco Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy Patterson of Winston-Salem and Marie and Michael Thomas of Columbia, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Marion and Brenda George of Westfield and Jimmy and Zelda George of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Sharon George McBride, Ricky George and wife Karen, Bobby Patterson and wife Christie, Gary Patterson and David George; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, Travis Gammons and Shannon Gammons; a sister, Evelyn C. George of Westfield; four sisters-in-law, Virginia Collins, Dixie Collins, Mae Collins and Lois George. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Collins, Martin Collins and Amon Collins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Francisco Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Charles Howell and the Rev. Jesse Bledsoe. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, June 5, 2001, at the church. GREEN

Mrs. Bonnie McClung Green, wife of the late Dr. Harold David Green of Winston-Salem died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was born April 13, 1907, in South Charlestown, W.Va., to the late James Albert McClung and Dollie Holden McClung. Mrs. Green was educated at the College of Wooster in Ohio and taught Latin and mathematics in Hudson, Ohio, for six years until her marriage to Dr. Green and the birth of her children. They moved to Winston-Salem in 1945. In her first 10 years in Winston-Salem, Mrs. Green was active in affairs of the community. She was a member of the YWCA board, chairman of Y-Teens, a member of the PTA council on the board of the Little Theatre, the Bowman Gray Hospital Guild and the Baptist Hospital Bookmobile. Mrs. Green began teaching again in 1954 and taught mathematics at Hanes High School, Southwest Forsyth and West Forsyth High Schools for 17 years. She introduced calculus into Southwest High School in 1959. She enjoyed sponsoring the National Honor Society and tried to use it as a spur to lifelong learning. Since her retirement in 1972, Mrs. Green has tutored in mathematics in North Carolina and Florida. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher's society. For many years she has enjoyed membership in Sorosis. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Green Trivette of Winston-Salem; a son, David Louis Darragh Green and wife Martha of Durham; and two granddaughters, Ginger and Laura Green of New York City. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship with the Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.

GUTHRIE

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Robert Wayne "Bobby" Guthrie, 32, died Sunday at his home. Mr. Guthrie was born in Detroit, Mich., a son of Earl Wayne and Pearl Romanchuk Guthrie. Surviving are his parents of the home; a brother, Douglas Dwayne Guthrie, also of the home; and his paternal grandmother, Fran Quay Guthrie of Morehead City. Funeral services are incomplete at the Kaul Funeral Home in Clinton Township, Michigan. Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home is assisting the Guthrie family.

HARRIS

Mary Ethel Cason Harris passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Guilford County to Cordy Bennett Cason and Willie Cason. Ms. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Harris; mother; father; two sons, Jessie Rominger and Richard Rominger Jr.; five brothers, Jack, Reuben, Frank, Freddie and Ogburn Cason; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by a sister, Annie Thompson; three daughters, Linda Kiser, Denise Harrold and Maryann Teague; five sons, Larry Rominger, Gary Huffman, Ronnie Rominger, Jeff Rominger and Mark King; 32 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday June 6 2001, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. Joe Long officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

McLAIN

HORSE SHOE - Opal McNeil McLain, 86, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Pardee Care Center following a brief illness. A native of Wilkes County, she had lived in Winston-Salem prior to moving to Henderson County in 1984. She was the daughter of the late James and Bessie McNeil and the wife of the late William Glynn McLain, who died in 1977. She was a 1932 graduate of Draughans Business College in Winston-Salem. She was employed by Spillman & Smith DDS as office manager and bookkeeper for 25 years. Along with her husband she owned and operated McLain's Grocery on Country Club Road in Winston-Salem. She was a member of the Baptist faith and taught Sunday school for over 60 years. She was actively involved in all church activities. Her sister, Rena Ruth Spicer, preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Westmoreland and her husband Donald of Horse Shoe; two grandchildren, L. Scott Westmoreland and his wife Lisa of Omaha, Texas and Jill Westmoreland Rose and her husband John of Asheville; a great-granddaughter, McLain Ryland Rose of Asheville; two sisters, Marie Hendrix of Murphy, and Reba Dew Smith of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Hoke and Hoyle McNeil of Wilkesboro. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2001, at the French Broad Baptist Church with the Revs. Kemuel Pruitt and Mervin Garrison officiating. A graveside committal service will be held at 4 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery in Wilkes County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to French Broad Baptist Church Building Fund, 182 Grandview Lane, Hendersonville, NC 28791, or the Baptist Children's Homes of N.C. Inc., P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361. MEDINA

Mrs. Grace Medina, 68, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, June 4, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Medina had been active with Northwest Forsyth Little League and volunteered with Cancer Services of Forsyth County. Mrs. Medina is survived by a loving husband of 47 years, Kanute Medina; three daughters, Stephanie Capps and husband Chip of Charlotte, Teresa McDermod and husband Bob of Medford, Mass., and Monica Medina-Murphy and husband Jeffrey of Kernersville and a son, Knute "Buddy" Medina of Chapel Hill. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Jenni Zehnacker and husband David, Bill Capps, Bill McDermod, Sarah McDermod, Melanie Murphy, Michael Murphy and Taylor Medina. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by Chaplain Fred Moretz. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

NORMAN

Mrs. Edith Cumbo Norman, 79, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C. Mrs. Norman was born in Leaksville to Harvey and Carrie Pickrel Cumbo on Aug. 18, 1921. Mrs. Norman was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. She received her L.P.N. degree from Forsyth Technical Community College and worked from 1965 to 1985 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chilton Harvey Norman; two brothers, Horace and Victor Cumbo; and a sister, Della Niven. She is survived by a son, Timothy F. Norman of York, S.C.; a daughter, Rebecca N. Orr of Greenville, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. PARHAM

Mrs. Alice Evelyn Morris Parham, 94, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Arbor Acres. She was born Feb. 12, 1907, in Winston-Salem, the daughter of J. Frank and Alice Watson Morris and granddaughter of the legendary North Carolina attorney and public servant, Cyrus B. Watson. "Ebbie" was educated in the Winston-Salem school system and was elected president of the first senior class of R.J. Reynolds High School in 1924. She lost her sight to glaucoma during her senior year. After graduation, she attended the North Carolina School for the Blind in Raleigh. While there, she met J. Marshall Parham from Charlotte. She and Marshall were married on New Year's Eve 1935 in the Centenary United Methodist Church Chapel. The couple lived independently at Gray Court apartments for over 50 years. Marshall, who died in 1995, was a noted author and playwright and was a counselor for the N.C. Commission for the Blind. Together the Parhams wrote many songs and operettas, including "Song of the Lions," which became the national song of the Lions Club. Mrs. Parham wrote both the words and the music for "Broken Dreams of Yesterday," which was published and later recorded by the big band of Kay Kyser. As an accomplished pianist and organist, she frequently played on air during the early years of WSJS radio and in her later years at Arbor Acres. She was a lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, Marshall, Mrs. Parham was preceded in death by her half brother, Frank B. Morris and her brothers, John W. Morris and Lindsay P. Morris. She leaves behind her loving nieces and nephews, Mrs. Virginia Morris Hazelwood of Newport News, Va., Mrs. Evelyn Morris Ellis of Holly Springs, Mrs. Mary Alice Morris Knight of Garner, Mr. James L. Morris of Portland, Ore., and Mr. J. Frank Morris of Winston-Salem. She also leaves behind Mrs. Janie Flippin, her loving and faithful friend and companion who cared for the Parhams for almost 60 years. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Goodson Friendship Hall of the Health Care Center at the Triad United Methodist Home with the Rev. Roland T. Barnhardt and the Rev. Jack Yarbrough presiding. A private burial will follow at Salem cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Triad United Methodist Home, P.O. Box 5364, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. The family would like to thank the staff of Arbor Acres for their loving kindness for over 11 years.

SHAFFNER

JONESVILLE - Mrs. Helen Louise Atkins Shaffner, 62, of Shaffner Road passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was born March 19, 1939, in Surry County to the late William Webster and Lela Mae Badgett Atkins. Mrs. Shaffner was a homemaker and volunteered for years with the Old Hickory Council Cub Scouts and the Volunteer Reading Program at Jonesville Elementary School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesville where she served as a former Sunday school teacher for the 4- and 5-year-olds. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Etta Atkins Bledsoe, Nellie Ruth Atkins Hayes and Willie Elizabeth Atkins Shaffner; a brother, Glenn Lee Atkins; and a nephew, Henry Rufus Shaffner Jr. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Dewitt Clarence Shaffner of the home; her son Barry Dewitt Shaffner, of the home; three sisters, Metta "Polly" Atkins Bledsoe, Dottie Atkins Hollander and Nancy Atkins Cantrell; three special nieces and other nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Jonesville by Dr. Ray Hamilton and the Rev. Bill Byrd. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jonesville, Jonesville, NC 28642.

TEMPLE

Mrs. Alphia Burns Temple, 102, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 14, 1898, in Fort Springs, W.Va., to C.H. and Betty Lee Burns. Mrs. Temple had been a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Oscar Temple Sr.; her son, the Rev. Edward Oscar Temple Jr.; and her daughter, Betty Lucille Bullard. Surviving are six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and several great-great-great-grandchildren. Alphia was residing at Davie Place in Mocksville when she was taken from this world. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
