JESSUP

GREENSBORO - Mr. William Rolen Jessup, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Jessup was born in Surry County, a son of Virlen R. Jessup and Doran Strickland Jessup, who both preceded him in death. He had resided in Guilford County 60 years and was an active member of Raleigh's Crossroad United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men, serving also as a trustee and as a benevolence treasurer. He retired from Rexam Corp., where he was supervisor in the shipping and receiving department. He was twice married. His first wife, Lula Mills Jessup died Sept. 12, 1982. A son, Kenneth R. Jessup died April 27, 1971; and brothers, Thomas Jessup, Nathaniel Jessup, Roosevelt Jessup, and Roscoe Jessup all predeceased him. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Nonnie G. Graham Jessup of the home; four sons, the Rev. Belvin J. (Arnetta) Jessup of Greensboro, William McCoy Jessup and Oliver T. (Susanne) Jessup Sr. of Philadelphia, Pa., and Virlen R. (Ronnie) Jessup of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Ms. Eleanor Bankston of Lacey, Wash., Ms. Carol J. Owens of Greensboro and Ms. Janice Jessup of Washington, D.C.; four stepsons, James William Graham and Danny Graham of Durham, Clinton Graham of Hickory and David Graham of South Boston, Va.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Nancy Irby of Atlantic City, N.J., Ms. Lucy Graham of Durham and Ms. Linda Graham of Raleigh; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six brothers, Erastus (Hessie) Jessup, Alfonzo Jessup, Ansley (Leon) Jessup and Augene (Gladys) Jessup, all of Greensboro, John D. (Mae) Jessup of Oak Ridge and Edward (Carrie) Jessup of Harrisburg, Pa.; three sisters, Mrs. Bettye (Lindsay) Taylor of Walkertown, Mrs. Genova (David) Enoch of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Pauline Ruffin of Greensboro; an aunt, Mrs. Beatrice Flippin of Mount Airy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial United Methodist Church, High Point, with Dr. Dewey W. Smith, pastor, and the Rev. Glen Lyles officiating. Burial will follow at Raleigh's Crossroad United Methodist Church cemetery. Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Raleigh's Crossroad United Methodist Church and other times at the residence. LAWSON

WESTFIELD - Mr. William Lawson, 83, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born April 27, 1918, in Stokes County to Eddie and Savannah Lawson. Mr. Lawson was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Caldonia Jones Lawson, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Maynard East of Westfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Jo Ann Lawson of Westfield; two grandchildren, Marlana Ann Lawson Plunkett of Westfield and Christopher William East of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Ann Plunkett and Jonathan Tyler Plunkett; three sisters, Margaret Jones and Lois Lawson, both of Danbury, and Essie Neal of Walnut Cove; six half sisters; and two half brothers. Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by two sisters, Ludy Martin and Pernie Lee Taylor; and two brothers, Edgar Lawson and Euel Lawson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Rodney Marshall, Elder Scotty Marshall, the Rev. Rick Sewell and Elder Vance Jones. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, Oct. 10, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and other times at Mr. Lawson's home, 2259 Simmons Road, Westfield. MARTIN

Mrs. Mary Louise George Martin, of 1629 E. Third St., Apt. 304B, in Winston-Salem died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born in Surry County, April 9, 1928, to the late Welvene George and Mary Ellen Mills George. She worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and retired from Forsyth County Club. She later pursued a career in private duty nursing and retired from the profession. She was a charter member of United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, was a member of the Sunday school, deaconess ministry, missionary group #4, and an honorary altar mother. She is survived by two daughters, Sheila Smith Astrop, and a devoted son-in-law, Christopher, and Millicent Carter-Harris; a son, Archie L. (Janet) Martin, all of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Roderick Harris, Charles Harris Jr. and Shandra Harris, all of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Sylvania Penn (devoted caregiver who also lived with her), of Mount Airy, Earlene George (devoted caregiver), of Winston-Salem, Virginia (Robert) Hughes, of Pilot Mountain, Cora George, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Emily (James) Pitts, of Harrisburg, Pa.; a brother, Ralph George Sr., of Harrisburg, Pa.; a devoted nephew, Donald McKinney, of Winston-Salem; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, including a devoted cousin, Beatrice Prioleau, of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Joan George and Brenda Barrett George; and other relatives and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, M.L. Martin; a sister, Lizzie Overa George Clark; and two brothers, James George and Thomas George. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. J. Ray Butler will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the church. MAURER

KING - Mr. James Melvin "Jim" Maurer, 64, of Charles Road died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born March 29, 1937, in Clinton County, Pa., to Russell and Daisy Miller Maurer. Jim served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and was a retired long-haul truck driver. Surviving are his wife, Betty Calloway Maurer, of the home; two sons, Scott Maurer and wife, Karen, of Cana, Va., and Mike Maurer, of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Kathy Lawson and Tina Armstrong, both of King; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Janet Remchek, and husband, Al, of Trout Run, Pa.; and a special companion, Charli. Funeral ser-vices will be held at 2 p.m. Thurs-day at Slate Funeral Home in King, with the Rev. Hal Stultz, minister, officiating. Burial will follow at the First Christian Church cemetery in King. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maple-wood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

PRATT

CARY - Susan P. Pratt died Oct. 8, 2001, at the Glenaire Healthcare Center in Cary. She was born to parents Susan Andersen and Virgil Poston in July 1919 in Madison, Wis. She received her bachelor of arts degree in economics (Mortar Board, Phi Beta Kappa) in 1940 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she also attended one year of graduate school in pre-law. She worked for the federal government in personnel management evaluation before joining the American Red Cross as a social worker in 1944. She worked for the Red Cross in an Army hospital in Normandy, France, during 1945. Upon returning from France after World War II, she met and married Rollin E. Pratt in 1946. They were married for 52 years, until Mr. Pratt's death in 1999. The couple made their home in Winston-Salem and Mrs. Pratt worked as an office manager in their business, R.E. Pratt and Company, Insur-ance Adjusters. Mrs. Pratt was a Girl Scout leader and was active first at First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem, and later at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Rural Hall, where she served as a Sunday-school teacher, deacon, elder and member of the Witness and Service Committee. With Mr. Pratt, she was a founding member of Pine Brook Country Club, where she supported many activities, and assisted for a time in the junior girls golf program. Her primary service to the larger community was as a lead volunteer and member of the board of directors of the Crisis Control Ministry. Mrs. Pratt is survived by her sister, Anne Baxter, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and two daughters, Penelope Pratt Oland (Bruce), of Raleigh and Deborah Pratt Tacon (Gary), of Piermont, N.Y. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Todd Gardner, of Holly Springs, Susan Colette Gardner, of Randleman, Gene Luka Tacon, Travis Rollin Tacon and Maya Rose Tacon of Piermont, N.Y.; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Glenaire staff members for the care they gave during her final illness. Susan wished that donations be made in her name to either Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 357 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 21, at St. Andrews.

SAPP

Mr. Ralph James Sapp Jr., 72, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Forsyth County to the late Ralph James Sapp Sr. and Pearl Kiger Sapp. Mr. Sapp was a member of Salem Baptist Church for 31 years and a member of the Hughey Thomas Sunday-school class. He loved bowling, golfing, hunting and fishing. Mr. Sapp was an avid fisherman and spent a lot of time fishing at his cottage in Long Beach after his retirement from Hanes Knitting in 1991. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Naomi Luffman Cox Sapp of the home; three daughters, Debbie Conrad of Winston-Salem, Lynn Eddinger and husband James of Germanton and Darlene Johnson of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Michael and David Conrad, Matthew Eddinger and Hailey Johnson. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Salem Baptist Church, with Dr. Howard Wilburn and the Rev. Floyd Boles officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wed-nesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. TUTTLE

Mr. Henry Dallas Tuttle of 831 Midway School Road passed away Oct. 8, 2001, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. A list of survivors and other details will be announced later. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

ANDERSON

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Ruth Mabe Anderson, 73, of 5355 Pine Hall Road, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Mabe was born Nov. 4, 1927, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Gabe and Louise Joyner Anderson. She was a lifelong member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband Thomas Stewart Anderson of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Susan Anderson, and Nathan and Tina Anderson, all of Kernersville; two sisters, Betty Wall of Walkertown, and Wilma and her husband Arnold Petticord of Walnut Cove; a brother, Donald and his wife Linda Mabe of Walnut Cove; and four grandchildren, Benjamin Anderson, Sydney Anderson, Jordan Anderson and Stacie Anderson. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church on Pine Hall Road by the Rev. Wes Austin and the Rev. Jimmy Lawton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville. BAKER

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Anne Cude Baker died Oct. 20, 2001, at the residence of her daughter. She was born May 20, 1928, in Winston-Salem to Robert and Jean Ring Cude. Mrs. Baker was a 1945 graduate of Reynolds High School and attended Guilford College. She was retired from the Winston-Salem YMCA and was a lifelong member of the Winston-Salem Friends Meeting. Mrs. Baker is survived by a son, Mike Baker and wife Phairin of Munford, Tenn.; a daughter, Nanci Hedgepeth and husband Wyatt of High Point; and two grandchildren, Jimmy and Kelly. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting by Pastor Ken Bradstock. Memorials may be directed to Winston-Salem Friends Meeting, 3151 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262. DYMOTT

GERMANTON - Mr. Joseph Robert "Joe" Dymott, 61, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001. He was born March 5, 1940, in Forsyth County to Elmer Richard Dymott Sr. and Myrtle Merritt Dymott. Mr. Dymott was retired from Piedmont Natural Gas, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father and his first wife, Carolyn Sell. He is survived by his wife Brenda Fallin Dymott of the home; two nephews, Michael Dymott and Elmer Richard Dymott III, both of Winston-Salem; and his beloved dog, "Chassie." A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Thompson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family requests that memorials be made to the donor's choice.

GROSS

SPENCER - Mr. Jonathan David Gross, 22, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after being in declining health for 11/2 years. Mr. Gross was born April 18, 1979, in Hagerstown, Md., to Wanda Brown Gross and the Rev. Richard A. Gross of Spencer. He was educated in the Washington County, Md., schools and graduated from Faith Christian Academy in Martinsburg, W.Va., and York Technical Institute in York, Pa., where he received an associate degree as a computer system specialist. He was employed as a computer system specialist at Pillowtex's Data Center in Kannapolis. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, and was active in the Graduate and Career Bible Study Fellowship. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother Jeanette McDaniel Brown of Woodleaf; and his paternal grandparents Howard and Audrey Eichelberger Gross of Jeppa, Md. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 at Oakdale Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Walters of the Rowan Baptist Association officiating. Mr. Gross will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the Needmore Baptist Church cemetery in Woodleaf. Memorials may be made to the Jonathan Gross Cancer Support Ministry, c/o Oakdale Baptist Church, P.O. Box 233, Spencer, NC 28159.

HARRIS

STATESVILLE - Mrs. Belle Smith Harris, 82, of 2039 Cline St. died Friday at her home. Born in Davie County on Dec. 26, 1918, she was a daughter of the late James Smith and Bessie Smith Smith. She was retired from Beauty Maid Mills, and was a member of Cochran Street Baptist Church. Her husband, Mr. Spencer Wilson Harris, died Feb. 16, 1980. She also was preceded in death by six sisters and a brother. Survivors include a foster son, Steve Grant and his wife Mary Jo of Stony Point; two foster grandchildren, Dustin and Heather Grant, 17 nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Cochran Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim McGraw, Dr. J.B. Parker Jr. and the Rev. Lester Beckham officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the New Union Methodist Church cemetery. The family will assemble at the residence of the deceased and will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. MADISON - Mr. John Calvin Harrison, 76, formerly of Sisk Road in Danbury, died in Madison early Saturday morning, Oct. 20, 2001, following a period of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, he was born June 16, 1925, to the late Charlie Houston and Mary Neal Harrison. Mr. Harrison was a member of Union Tabernacle Church, and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with more than 23 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in Germany. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Myrtle McGee Harrison; a son, John C. Harrison Jr. of Lynchburg, Va.; four daughters, Judy and Ron Faison of Titusville, Fla., Joy and Monty Tuggle of Lawsonville, Debbie and John Justice of Madison, and Darleen Hooker of Danbury; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Melanie, Ronnie, Angel, David, Christina, Amanda, Adam, Melissa and Tyler; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Steven and Justin; three sisters, Ruth Nance, Ruby Martin and Bobbie Sue Sutphin; a brother, Jimmy Harrison; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel. The Rev. John Atkins will officiate. Burial will follow in the Union Tabernacle Church cemetery in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening (Sunday) at the funeral home, and other times at 231 Madison Beach Road in Madison. HOGAN

FOREST CITY - The Rev. Rufus "Joe" Hogan, 78, of 302 Birdsong Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 at Rutherford Hospital. The Rev. Hogan was a native of Barron County, Ky., and was the son of the late Jesse and Lou Ella Williams Hogan. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University and Southeastern Seminary. He was pastor of Alexander Baptist Church for 19 years, and was a pastor in North Carolina for 46 years. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, and was a member of Sandy Mush Baptist Church. Funeral and burial services will be private. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen. He is survived by his wife Betty Bishop Hogan; sons, David Hogan of Forest City, Kenny Hogan of Bostic, and Doug Hogan of Ellenboro; daughters, Becky Campbell of Boonville, and Beverly J. of Forest City; a brother, Noah E. Hogan of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Bessie Stader of Indianapolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

JORDAN

THOMASVILLE - Mr. Robert Eugene Jordan, 64, a resident of 344 Forrest Park Circle, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born Dec. 12, 1936, in Davidson County, the son of Arvie Jordan and Caroline Combs Jordan. He had been a resident of this area all his life. He was employed with Leggett & Platt Inc. in High Point as a superintendent. He was a member of Pine Woods United Methodist Church, and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Mrs. Essie Rabon Jordan; two sons, Michael Jordan and his wife Melissa of Trinity, and Robert Eugene Jordan Jr. and his wife Sue Beth of Montgomery, Ala.; his mother, Mrs. Caroline Combs Jordan of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Bruce (Margie) Anderson of Beaufort, S.C., and Mrs. Earl Dean (Mary Jane) Smith of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren, Cody Jordan, Kristen Jordan, and Nigel Jordan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Pine Woods United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Bethany United Church of Christ cemetery. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and other times at the home. The family requests memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 1212 Bridford Parkway, Greensboro, N.C.

LACKEY

Mrs. Iris George Lackey, 68, died at her home on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, following a lengthy period of declining health. A native of Surry County, she was born on March 30, 1933, to the late Robah Lee and Nellie Inman George. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Stewart. Mrs. Lackey was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville, and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Surviving are her husband of 13 years, Bill Lackey of the home; a daughter, Cheryl Hodges Pruitt of King; two sons, Rick Hodges and wife Jane of Winston-Salem, and Jerry Hodges and wife Beverly of King; three granddaughters, Nikki Pruitt, Amanda Hodges and Jennifer Lee; three grandsons, Jamie Pruitt, and Brandon and Jason Hodges; two great-grandchildren, Amber Hodges and Chris Lee; three sisters, Barbara Lawson and Peggy Isaacs, both of Westfield, and Bonnie McCraw of Cana, Va.; and two brothers, Pete George and Jack George, both of Westfield. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and a host of special friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville, officiated by Pastor Jonathan Rogers and Dr. Jim Baldwin. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park.
