MANGUM

WEST JEFFERSON - The Rev. Maynard Henry Mangum, 77, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at the Segraves Care Center. The Rev. Mangum was born June 19, 1924, in Asheville to Ralph and Esther Mangum. He was preceded in death by his parents in 1985; and his first wife, Roselyn Cline Mangum, who died July 16, 1988. The Rev. Mangum graduated from Hickory High School in 1941. He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1948. He received his BD degree from the Southeastern Seminary in 1956. In 1957 he received his Th.M from South-eastern Seminary. He was pastor of Clyde's Chapel in Wendell from 1954 to 1956; First Baptist Church in Southern Pines from 1957 to 1964; First Baptist Church in Elizabeth City from 1964 to 1974 and East Baptist Church in Gastonia from 1974 to 1978. He owned and operated The Good Book Store in Kannapolis from 1978 to 1987. He married Wrenn Sharpe in 1989. He came to Ashe County and served as pastor of Obids Country Church in West Jefferson from 1996 to 2000. His many other activities included Chaplain of Segraves Care Center in Jefferson; Bible teacher at Mount Village Assisted Living Center in Jefferson; member of West Jefferson United Methodist Church; member of Ashe County Choral Society; member of Mouintainovertones Barber Shop Quartette; chairman of Ashe County Airport Advisory Committee; member of the Ashe County Ministerial Association; and speaker on the "Thought for the Day" devotional program on WKSK Radio. The Rev. Mangum was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945 serving in Guam and China. He also served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church with the Rev. A.B. Weaver and the Rev. Kirk McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood cemetery in Hickory at 3:30 p.m. with military Rites. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Badger Funeral Home. MERRITT

RURAL HALL - Mrs. Emma Arrington Merritt, 80, formerly of 225 Academy St., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Merritt was born April 20, 1921 in Stuart, Va., to the late Samuel Houston and Mary Moss Arrington. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County until she moved to Village Care in King. Mrs. Merritt was a lifetime member of Becks Baptist Church. She retired from AT&T after 251/2 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Georgia McCollum and Lena Westmore-land; and a brother, Phillip Arrington. A devoted mother, grandmother and a wonderful mother-in-law, Mrs. Merritt is survived by a son, Wayne "Butch" Merritt and wife Delores of Germanton; a daughter, Jane Merritt Evans and husband Ronnie of King; her grandchildren: Sherri Kiser and husband Dennis, Michael Kiger and wife Lynn, Connie Brown and husband Mike and Crystal Evans; and her great-grandchildren: Noah Kiser, Ayla Kiger, Joshua and Jacob Widner, Abbi Evans and Austin Willard. In addition she is survived by four brothers: Paul Arrington, Jack Arrington, Guy (Buck) Arrington and Roy Arrington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. OAKES

RURAL HALL - Mr. Robert Lee Oakes was born June 11, 1916, and departed this life Sunday night, Dec. 10, 2001. He was a native of Rural Hall and the son of the late Zeb and Cora Speas Oakes. He was a retired employee of Stultz, Lums and Hill's Barbecue Restaurant, and a longtime member of the St. James United Methodist Church, which he served devotedly. He was an active member of the church. His memory will be always cherished by a daughter, Wendy (Eugene) Green; a brother, Van Pal (Katherine) Oakes; four sisters, Blanche Mitchell of Winston-Salem, Nelline (Worth) Mitchell of Rural Hall, Lillie M. Phifer of Mooresville and Sophia Leak of Newport News, Va.; a brother-in-law, Mr. David Tyler; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Homegoing ser-vices will be Saturday Dec. 15, 2001, at St. James United Methodist Church in Rural Hall. Viewing will be at 12:30 p.m. and the service at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Epps officiating. The family members will meet at the home of the deceased at 2033 W. Cannon Ave. at noon Dec. 15, 2001. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Services provided by Beasley's Funeral Service.

PEARCE

Mrs. Eleanor Holcomb Pearce, 85, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 15, 1916, in Forsyth County to William Herman and Sophronia Mundy Holcomb. Mrs. Pearce was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church and retired as a bookkeeper from Cahill and Swain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Pearce, and a daughter, Judy Herring. She is survived by a daughter, Patsy Livengood of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Wes Livengood of Bermuda Run; five grandchildren, Hunter Herring and wife Claire, and Judd Herring, all of Richmond, Va., Lee Livengood and wife Becky, and Blake Livengood and wife Sheri, all of Winston-Salem, and Amy Livengood of Charlotte; a son-in-law, Richard Herring of New Hampshire; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Pearce of Clemmons and Mrs. Ann Weaver of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Sophia and Hailey; a sister, Dorothy Plaster of Clemmons; and three nephews, Hank, David and Danny Pearce. ROBERTSON

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Julian Dean Robertson, 50, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at his residence. He was born Feb. 20, 1951, to Rufus Julian Robertson Jr. and Lois Grubbs Robertson in Forsyth County. He is survived by a daughter, Deena Robertson; two sons, Jacob and Joshua Robertson; a granddaughter, Chloe Alexis Bolen, all of Forsyth County; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Robertson of Walkertown; a sister, Kay Gordon and her husband, Johnny, of Kernersville; a niece, Kendall Gordon; and a special friend, Sharon Kromer. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Douglas Butler will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 Friday evening at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel.

ROMANCHUK

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Evelyn Marie Romanchuk, 48, "Sweet Evie" to husband Bob Romanchuk, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001. She was born July 5, 1953, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to Charles V. and Emily Hoose. Mrs. Romanchuk operated Evelyn's Expert Alterations, where she was known for her unique creative clothing designs and handiwork. She spent 18 years as a devoted full-time evangelist with Jehovah's Witnesses. Mrs. Romanchuk was known for her loving kindness and generous heart. In addition to her husband of 27 years, survivors include two sisters, Elaine Canada (Lance) of Holly Springs and Freda Brodish (David) of Youngsville; two brothers, Chuck Hoose (Cindy) of Cooleemee and Gerald S. Hoose (Darlene) of Mocksville; her parents of Mocksville; grand-mother Freda West; mother-in-law, Nancy Romanchuk; two brothers-in-law, Thomas (Linda) and James (Rebecca) Romanchuk; and 16 beloved and cherished nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1304 County Home Road, Mocksville. Brother Terry Smola will officiate.

SATTERFIELD

Mrs. Bertie Juanita Satterfield, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 20, 1923, in Stokes County to James Manuel and Annie Martin George. She is survived by her husband, Ernest Lee Satterfield of the residence; two daughters, Faye Berry and Sharon S. Tatum of Winston-Salem; a son, Robert Satterfield of Germanton; two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and six sisters, Patricia Joyce of Rural Hall, Louise Gough of Winston-Salem, Nancy Adams and Rachel Dawson of Rural Hall, Ruth Lynch of Walnut Cove and Alma Rogers of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown, with the Rev. V.J. Switzer officiating. There is no stated visitation. SHOUSE

Mr. Roy Coleman Shouse, 83, of 4140 Bethania Station Road, a loving husband, father, grand-father and great-grandfather went home to be with the Lord for Christmas. Mr. Shouse died Dec. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Jan. 3, 1918, in Forsyth County, the son of John C. Shouse and Eva Grubbs Shouse. He attended Forsyth County schools and was a life member of Beck's Baptist Church. Mr. Shouse was married 62 years to Ollie Mae James Shouse, who survives. He was employed by Shouse & Stultz, Brigg & Shaffner, Krispy Kreme and Piedmont Aviation, and was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph, Cyril, James and Lee Shouse, and two sisters, Mae Sapp and Pearl Ketner. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Beck's Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev Ray Hamilton, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Surviving are the wife, of the home; two daughters, Nancy S. Samuels and husband Ed of Wilmington and Annie S. Davenport and husband Wally of Salisbury; a son, Jerry H. Shouse and wife Linda of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Ollie Holt of Winston-Salem; a brother, William Shouse of Seabrook; grandchildren Lisa Grate and husband David of Hickory, Jerry A. Shouse and wife Jennifer, Clarksville, Tenn., Charles C. Shouse of Greensboro, Angie S. Schexnayder and husband Eugene of Garner, Dr. Ed L. Samuels and wife Jill of Holly Springs, Cynthia S. WILSON

Easter Reeves Wilson of 4500 Oak Haven Road, Apt. L., passed away Dec. 11, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Tabor County Aug. 7, 1938, to Thelbert and Canever Reeves. She was a member of Heavenly Host Apostolic Holiness Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Estella Reeves (Gregory) Miller and Mrs. Rosemary Reeves (Howard) Johnson; a sister, Mrs. Helen Reeves Hayes; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral ser-vices will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel, where Pastor Leroy McGhee will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the chapel. WOOD

Mrs. Wanda Sebastian Wood of the Willowbrook Healthcare Center, Yadkinville, died there Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. Mrs. Wood was born Nov. 19, 1927, in North Wilkesboro, the daughter of Hoyle Cecil Sebastian and Lois Moore Sebastian. She was a graduate of Hickory High School and the Clevenger Business College of Hickory, where she graduated with honors. She moved to Winston-Salem in the early 1950s and joined Wachovia Bank, retiring after 32 years of service as assistant vice president of the bond department. Mrs. Wood was an active member of College Park Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Old Town Woman's Club and a former president of the National Association of Banking Woman. She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Donald and Cecil Sebastion. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at College Park Baptist Church con-ducted by the Rev. Jim Baucom and Dr. Foy Martin. Mrs. Wood will lie in state in the church sanctuary from 1 to 2 p.m. and the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour before the service and other times at the home of Sibyl Harmon, 90 Evergreen Drive. Survivors in-clude her husband, Mr. Silas Edward Wood Sr. of Willowbrook Healthcare Center; a daughter, Mrs. Pamela Dawn Wood Sidbury and husband Franky of Wilmington; a son, Silas Edward Wood Jr. of Winston-Salem; her mother, Mrs. Lois Moore Sebastian of Willowbrook Healthcare Center; two sisters, Mrs. Katena Morrison of Boonville and Betty Hendricks of Green-wood, S.C.; five brothers, Wayne Sebastian of Hildebran, Tommy Sebastian of Elgin and Sheldon, Dean and Robert Sebastian, all of Hickory; two grandchildren, Leslie and Steven; and a stepgrandchild, Billy. The Wood family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the entire staff of Willowbrook Healthcare Center for its loving care.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ollie Mae Gaddy Ashley, of 760-K N. Highland Ave., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the Saint Peter's World Outreach Center with Bishop J.C. BLACKBURN

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, our Savior called, and our loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt answered. Pearlie Mae Searcy Blackburn of 1728 Rockford St. received her well-deserved rest. Born in Stokes County on Nov. 3, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Annie Searcy. She graduated from London High School and later became employed by Brighton Gardens as a professional in-home care provider. Pearl was a faithful member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church, where she served dutifully as a member of the Spiritual choir, the senior choir, the Mass choir and on the Nurse's Board. Her son, Donald R. Hauser, preceded her in homegoing. Celebrating her life and cherishing the precious memories are three sons, Glenn (Carolyn) Searcy, William L. (Erica) Hauser, and James Blackburn; three daughters, Treva Hauser, Catherine Hauser and Angela Blackburn, all of Winston-Salem; a devoted granddaughter, Nikita Hauser, and a dear niece, Tenisha Watkins, both of the home; three loving sisters, Louise Martin of Walnut Cove, Marie Searcy, and Mary Panky; two devoted brothers, Aldine Searcy and Richard (Phyllis) Searcy, all of Winston-Salem. "Grandma Pearl" was a vigilant and genuine mother to her adored grandchildren: Zalinor Banks, Syteria Hauser, LaTreva Hauser, Lenithia Bishop, Shereka Floyd, Katrina Balwin, Shakura Floyd, little Dianté Blackburn, Michael Taylor, and Kevin Coleman; and two great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends join her church family of Solid Rock and a special friend, John Ray, in the celebration of her precious life. Family visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, with the homegoing celebration following at Solid Rock Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Charles Leak, presiding. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence en route to the church for the service hour. GREENSBORO - Lillian Berry Cheek, 81, passed away Dec. 20, 2001, at Walnut Cove Health Care. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at the Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel with the Rev. Al Stanley officiating, followed by interment in Lakeview Memorial Park. Lillian was a beautician in her home for 20 years in Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; and her brother Garland Berry. She is survived by her son, Leon Cheek and his wife Vee of Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2001, at the Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel. COLBERT

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Paul Eugene Colbert, 76, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Colbert was born April 22, 1925, in Forsyth County to Donald Eugene and Susan Dalton Colbert and was a retired employee of Smitherman Oil Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda M. Colbert, in 1992; and a son Michael Eugene Colbert, in 1990. Also preceding him in death were three brothers, John Thomas Colbert of Newport News, Va., Marvin M. Colbert of Pfafftown, and Donald Ray Colbert of Winston-Salem. Surviving are a daughter, LuAnn Colbert Reed of the residence; a sister, Sue McBride of Lewisville; two brothers, Howard Colbert of Winston-Salem and Arthur Colbert of Yadkinville; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive, including a special nephew, Donald Andrew Colbert. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday Dec. 23, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park by Mr. Bobby Long. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Funeral Home.

MENNILL

AYLMER, Ontario, Canada - Mr. Joseph Lloyd Mennill died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the age of 85. He was born in Glanworth, Ontario, on Sept. 3, 1916, to Edward and Clara (Stevens) Mennill. He was a beloved husband of 55 years to Marjorie Dale Mennill. He was a dear father to his daughter, Jo Anne Thomas and husband William of Winston-Salem and his son, David Mennill and wife Judy of Aylmer, Ontario. He was a loving grandfather to Rita Mennill of Aylmer, Ontario, and John Lea Dillard Reynolds of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his four sisters, Alice Mennill, Velma Foster, Myrtle Hill and Ella Welch, and his only brother, Russell Mennill. He was a veteran of World War II, during which he served as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force. On Dec. 13, 1942, while on a bombing mission, his plane was shot down over the North Sea. He was rescued and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Stalag Luft III. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in forestry and received a master's degree in forestry from Yale University. He was the director of the Ontario Forest Ranger School and was the first director of the Ontario Police College. He served as a past district governor of Rotary International 6330 and enjoyed his many volunteer activities in the Aylmer community, especially the Canadian Cancer Society and Aylmer Historical Association. The funeral service was held Dec. 17 at St. Paul's United Church. Interment was at White Oaks cemetery, London. Remembrances to the Aylmer Area Community Foundation, 46 Talbot St. W., Aylmer, Ontario N5H 1J6, or the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation, 189 Elm St., St. Thomas, Ontario N5A 5C4 would be appreciated. RICHARDS

Dr. Claud Henry Richards Jr., a beloved friend to many and a dedicated teacher and colleague, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. Dr. Richards was born in Forth Worth, Texas, on Jan. 7, 1917, to Claud Henry Richards Sr. and Myrtle Lee Hall Richards. He received his B.A. from Texas Christian University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. Dr. Richards began teaching at Wake Forest in 1952, when the university was in the town of Wake Forest. In 1956, he became the founding chairman of the new politics department on the university's Winston-Salem campus. He was a longtime resident of Salemtowne Retirement Community, where he often used his beautiful tenor voice to inspire the residents. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he was elder emeritus, sang in the church choir and taught a Sunday school class. Dr. Richards became a soloist in Duke Chapel while a student and a teacher there. Surviving are several cousins and a host of devoted friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23 at First Christian Church with the Rev. James P. Cobb officiating. Inurnment will take place in Forth Worth at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church Choir Fund, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

SIMMONS

PINNACLE - Mr. Harry Leland Simmons, 79, of 263 Shoals Road passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at his home. He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Surry County to William Sanford and Bernice Cain Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a retired supervisor for Armtex and a member of First Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Jewell Gilley Simmons of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy S. Simmons and husband Steve of Trinity, Donna S. Simmons and husband David of King; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent Leland Simmons and wife Carla of Lawndale; six grandchildren, Joshua Simmons, Carrie Simmons, Ashley Simmons, Bailey Samuel Simmons, Jonah Simmons, and Nikki Craig; a great-grandchild, Lindsey Kate; two sisters, Frances Simmons, and Sallie Bowers, both of Pilot Mountain; a brother, Bobby Rex Simmons of Pilot Mountain. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Cox-Needham Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Amis Daniel and pastor Eugene Sherrill. Interment to follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001. The Simmons family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.
