VILAS - Mrs. Ida Waters Cornett, 95, the wife of the late Burlie N. Cornett, died Tuesday at her daughter's home. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mountain Dale Baptist Church. Barney Hampton Funeral Service of Boone is in charge of arrangements.

DONNELL

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Edith Donnell, 80, of 5512 Dobson Road passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Wesley Long Nursing Center. A homegoing celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Persimmon Grove AME Church. The Rev. Dr. Benjamin S. Foust, elder of WNCC/Western District, will preside. She was a life member of Persimmon Grove AME Church, where she was active and productive on many boards and auxiliaries until her declining health. She was also a driving force in the Guilford College Community. She leaves to honor her life a loving and devoted husband, Lacey Donnell Jr.; sisters-in-law Clarice Lindsay and Amanda Bennett; brother-in-law Charles Donnell (Judy); those whom she carefully nourished, Edith Lindsay, Gaynail L. Lindsay (the Rev. Leroy F. Mitchell); grandchildren Melissa Lindsay, Jason Lindsay, Jemiceo Mitchell, Loressa Mitchell, Monteco Mitchell; stepson Franklin Brown (Mary); and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives whose lives she continues to positively impact. Family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Professional services are entrusted to Woodard Funeral Home.

FARMER

Mrs. Leola Pigford Farmer, 100, of Winston-Salem peacefully went to be with our Lord early Monday, Jan. 7, 2002. She had been a long-term resident at the Springwood Care Center of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Farmer was born in Robinson County and attended the public schools. She moved to Winston-Salem at an early age, where she worked at Winston Leaf Tobacco Co. She was married to James Farmer, who preceded her in death. A daughter, Willie B. Nesmith and two brothers also preceded her in death. She was an active member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she served faithfully over the years on the nursing board and Effort Club until her health failed her. Mrs. Farmer was also a member of Bivouac Chapter No. 530 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Farmer is survived by a niece, Earnestine Wardlow; two nephews, Amos (Thelma) Pigford and Leander Pigford; a devoted godson, Fred (Carol) Henry; a granddaughter, Pat Nesmith; and two grandsons, Wayne and Tommie (Lib) Nesmith, all of Winston-Salem. She also leaves behind several devoted friends, Ruth Sims, Mildred and Cleveland Griffin; two godgranddaughters, Priscilla Jimenez and Betty Westley of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. 30 minutes before the services Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at New Bethel Baptist Church. Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory is in charge of arrangements.

FLETCHER

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Mildred Lowder Fletcher, 82, of N.C. Highway 801 S. died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Liberty United Methodist Church with Rev. John Andrews and the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:30 p.m. until time for the service. They request memorials be considered for Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or Liberty United Methodist Church Benevolence Fund, 141 Liberty Circle, Mocksville, NC 27028. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the church cemetery. Mrs. Fletcher was born Nov. 4, 1919, to the late John Samuel and Zama Lefler Lowder in Davie County and was retired from Fiber Industries. She was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and at one time was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Jerusalem Volunteer Fire Department and occasionally volunteered at the Storehouse for Jesus. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Fletcher, in 1991; two children, Kathy Lorraine Webb and Donald Ray Webb; and a brother, the Rev. John Albert Lowder. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Joe) Stafford and Libby (Medford) Foster; two sons, Jerry (Shirley)Webb, all of Mocksville, and Gerry (Brenda) Webb of Salisbury; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The family is being served by Eaton Funeral Service.

GARY

Ms. Carol Christine Gary, 52, of 2720 Sink St. passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, after a period of illness. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born June 26, 1949, to Evangelist Carolyn Teasley and the late Bobby Holland. She was educated and graduated from Carver High School. She is survived by her dear mother, Evangelist Carolyn Teasley of Winston-Salem; a son, Ronald Gary; two daughters, Mona Gary and Sabrina Gary, all of Winston-Salem; seven grand-children, Raheem Brim, James I. Reid, Latoya Williamson, Erika Montgomery, Chataka and Chantez Allen and Tyler Short, and an expected grandchild; six brothers, Dwight Gary, Bobby Holland, Button Holland, Shane Bonner, Chris Holland and Tony Holland, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Kathy Holland of Atlantic City, N.J., and Zada Bonner of Winston-Salem; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many devoted friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in the chapel of Russell Funeral Home, with Bishop Joseph Lowery officiating. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family may be contacted at the home of a daughter, Sabrina Gary, 2720 Sink St. (Russell)

HANDY

MOUNT AIRY - Miss Ocie Belle Handy, 66, died Wednesday at the Davis Regional Medical Center. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Korners Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is in charge of arrangements.

HAWKS

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Myrtle Marion Hawks, 87, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Surry County to the late Doctor Banner and Flora McMillan Marion. She was the wife of the late Walter M. Hawks of Old Highway 421 W. She was of the Baptist faith. She had spent the majority of her life in Yadkin County. She was employed at Hoots Memorial Hospital for several years. Mrs. Hawks enjoyed her quilting with the Yadkin County Quilters for many years. They quilted a wall hanging for the Hoots Hospital Lobby. She also enjoyed her flowers. She was a devoted and loving mother to her eight children, also she enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are her children, Mrs. Louise Wagoner of Boonville, Mr. Charles Marcus (Margie) Hawks of Yadkinville, Mrs. Betty (Donald) Groce of Hamptonville, Mrs. Brenda (Scotty) Fullerton of Yadkinville, Mrs. Faye H. Hunter of East Bend and Mr. Donald (Marie) Hawks, Mr. Michael (Janice) Hawks and Mr. Robbie "Robert" Hawks, all of Yadkinville; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also a host of friends and neighbors, who visited her faithfully during her illness. Mrs. Hawks was preceded in death by her sister, Lela Marion of Cana, Va. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Gentry Family Funeral Service Chapel, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville, by the Rev. Clint Branch, the Rev. Sammy Shoaf and the Rev. David Fullerton. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The family expresses their gratitude for all the love shown to them and their mother by the community, and especially to all the staff and workers and friends at the Yadkin Nursing Center. Thanks! God Bless You! for all you did for our beloved mother, Myrtle M. Hawks.

JOHNSON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Henderson Franklin Johnson, 79, of 351 S. Franklin Road, widower of Mrs. Omie Key Johnson died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at the Scenic View Nursing Center in King. Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Surry County to the late Willie Franklin and Maude Melissa Stone Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II and was owner and operator of Hull and Johnson Inc. Mr. Johnson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was a deacon and was a past Sunday school superintendent. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Maudine and Herald York of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Reecie Johnson of Dobson; three brothers-in-law ;, Crawley Hamlin and Olin Snow, both of Dobson, and Arnold and wife, Faye Key, of Ararat; two sisters-in-law, Faye Estes of Wilmington, Del. and Helen Key of Henderson; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; a great-great-niece; and the Phillip's Crew, Betsy and Jimmy Phillips, Jody and Melissa, Jim and Lilnette and Bo, Maegan and Matt. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Snow, Ada Ellen Money and Beatrice Hamlin; and a brother, Herbert Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Calvary Baptist Church and will be conducted by Dr. Wayne Hager. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens where there will be full Masonic rites conducted by Round Peak Masonic Lodge No. 616 AF&AM and full military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post No. 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post No. 9436. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday night at Calvary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, c/o Henderson Johnson Memorial Fund, 314 S. Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services of Mt. Airy are assisting the Johnson family.

LINVILLE

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. J. Harmon Linville, 91, one of Kernersville's and Forsyth County's oldest and most distinguished citizens, died unexpectedly Jan. 8, 2002, at the home of his cousin and wife, R.N. "Buster" and Edna Linville in Oak Ridge. Harmon was active until the day of his death and was working on financial matters shortly before his death. Harmon was born Oct. 3, 1910, in Forsyth County to Cyrus Leach Linville and Carrie Larimore Linville. He attended local schools and graduated from N.C. State University in 1932. In 1933, when he was elected mayor of Kernersville, a position previously held by his father, he was declared the youngest mayor in the United States. Harmon served as Kernersville's postmaster from 1936 until 1966, with the exception of three years of service in the U.S. Army during World War II, two years of which were in campaigns in Europe. In 1953, Harmon was elected president of the N.C. Postmasters' Association. Harmon, with his charming personality and constant smile, touched practically every aspect of community life in Kernersville, as well as in Forsyth County, where he served on many boards and agencies in leadership capacities, including as chairman of the John R. Patterson Memorial Building Committee, which was dedicated in 1970, the Kernersville Centennial Celebration Committee and the 150th celebration 50 years later, and the Oak Ridge Foundation Society. He was a benefactor of the Oak Ridge military Academy, where he was a retired trustee and where the Linville Infirmary bears his name along with that of his wife, Virginia, and R.N. and Edna Linville. He was one of the founders of the John R. Patterson Library of Kernersville, a longtime member of the Forsyth County Library Commission and other organizations too numerous to list. In addition to donating his time, energy and wisdom to these organizations, he gave generously of his financial resources. Harmon was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church for more than 75 years, more than any other living member, and served on practically all its boards and committees. In addition to his loyalty to his home church, Main Street, he was a benefactor to Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, where he was honored on several occasions. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia McCain Linville, in 1991. He is survived by R.N. Linville and Edna, and Juanita Browning and husband Clarence, all of Oak Ridge; and numerous other family members; and a host of friends, and was loved by all. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Ward, the Rev. George Freeman, the Rev. Douglas Fairbanks and the Rev. Dale Hilton presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Hanes Lineberry Pierce Chapel in Kernersville. Memorials may be sent to Main Street United Methodist Church, 306 S. Main St., Kernersville NC 27284; Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, 2424 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge NC 27310; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

LITTLER

LEXINGTON - Mary Myers Koonts Littler, 88, the wife of the late Harry P. Littler, died Tuesday at High Point Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Reeds Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PRESNELL

BOONE - Mr. William Lloyd Presnell, 64, the husband of Mary Hodges Presnell died Tuesday, Jan. 8. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, Boone, is in charge of arrangements.

REDMOND

BOONE - Mrs. Wilma Mary Price Redmond, 48, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 2002, at her parents home in West Jefferson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone by Pastor Tim Smith. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson City cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Boone Family Funeral Home in West Jefferson. Mrs. Redmond was born in Ashe County Sept. 21, 1953, to Elmer and Hazel Price. She was the director of radiology at Watauga Medical Center for 13 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone for 20 years. She is survived by a son, Chris Redmond of Boone; her parents, Elmer and Hazel Price of West Jefferson; a brother, Grant Price of West Jefferson; a sister, Janet Price Gambill of North Wilkesboro; and three nieces. BOONE - Mr. Ernest F. Roark, 80, the husband of Verlene Aldridge Roark, died Tuesday at his home. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Watauga Baptist Church. Barney Hampton Funeral Service of Boone is in charge of arrange-ments.

ROBERTS

Mrs. Mary Beth Markland Roberts of 131 Rosedale Circle died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on Sept. 7, 1930, to Mary Elizabeth and George Edward Markland. She graduated from Hanes High School in 1948 and was salutatorian of her class. She was a legal secretary for most of her working life. She spent a good deal of her time rescuing animals and placing them for adoption, caring for elderly people, helping people who came from other countries in finding jobs and in teaching them English. She was a member of Fairview Moravian Church for most of her life and served on the board of elders for two terms. Later she became an associate member of Fairview. She formed and was the president of the University Homeowners Association, which helped in making life in the community better, and for her efforts was nominated for a Jefferson Award. She received a Certificate of Recognition for Extraordinary Public Service in March of 2000. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Stuart Dixon Roberts Sr.; three daughters, Deborah G. Schwarz, Betsy Williams and Kristin Shamel; two stepsons, Stuart Dixon Roberts Jr. and Robin Roberts; and a stepdaughter, Deborah Susan Greene; a brother, Bill Markland and his wife Jackie; grandchildren Sarah and Eli Schwarz, Aaron and Noah Shamel, Rachel and Aaron Roberts, Margo Church, Mechelle Greene and Sonya Burns; a great-grandchild; several nephews and nieces; and her beloved dog, "Robbie". A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 10, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard in Old Salem. Memorials may be made to Fairview Moravian Building Fund, Fairview Moravian Church, 6550 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Kanab, UT 84741-5000; or to a charity of the donor's choice. SHELTON

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Bobby Lee Shelton, 68, of 5495 Belews Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Bradford Village-East, Kernersville. He was born Dec. 28, 1933, in Stokes County, a son of the late Joseph and Ora Spencer Shelton. Mr. Shelton was a devoted member of Gospel Light Baptist Church for 40 years serving as a deacon, usher, bus captain, children's camp worker, beginner-department Sunday-school superintendent, and various other positions. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean Conflict, and retired from Piedmont Airlines after 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Shelton. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Mrs. JoAnne Bundy Shelton of the home; three sons, Gregory Lee Shelton and his wife Aleta of Newport News, Va., Jeffrey Scott Shelton and his wife Barbara of Walnut Cove, and Robert Todd Shelton and his wife Tanya of Kernersville; two sisters, Gracie Brown of Thomasville and Violet Dillon of Walkertown; a brother, Jack Shelton of Yadkinville; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Katelyn, Bethany and Austin. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Dr. Bobby Roberson and the Rev. Frank Shumate. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville. SANFORD - Helen Perkins Thomas, 77, formerly of Surry County, the wife of the late Herbert Thomas, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bridges-Cam-eron Funeral Home in Sanford.

CRESTON - Mrs. Letha Bell Vanover, 92, died Wednesday.
