Ms. Brenda Joyce Jones, 55, of 1445 Woodland Ave. passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at her residence. She was a native and resident of Winston-Salem and was a member of First Waughtown Baptist Church, where she served as president of the pastor's aide group. She was employed at National Linen Service for over 25 years. Surviving are seven sisters, Gloria Jones, Jacqueline Jones, Carolyn Rucker, Irma Jones, Gail Bryan, Cheryl Miler (Michael) and Juanetta Jones; two brothers, Elbert Jeffries (Sharon) and Converse Thomas (Hilda); and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the First Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Bishop officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (Russell)

KERR

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Willie "Will" Otho Kerr Jr., 58, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home. He was born Dec. 20, 1943, in Durham to Willie O. Kerr Sr. and Lala George Kerr. Mr. Kerr was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church. He was owner/operator of Kerr Auto Body Shop and the last few years worked for Allstate Express and Central Delivery. Surviving are his wife, Sharon Hester Kerr of the home; two daughters, Melissa K. Richardson of Walkertown and Pam Butler of Tobaccoville; a grandson, Cole Richardson; his mother of Britthaven of Forsyth; a sister, Sylvia Choplin of West Jefferson; and two brothers, Larry Kerr of Durham and Bobby Kerr of Topton. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Moravian Church Graveyard with the Rev. Hal Cole officiating. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Moravian Church Grave-yard Fund, 120 Hammock Farm Road, Walkertown, NC 27051; or Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. MATTHEWS

STATESVILLE - Mr. L.J. "Jim" Matthews Jr., 65, of 132 Mount Hermon Road, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2002. He was born Sept. 10, 1936, in Wallburg to the late Luther James and Wilma Fussell Matthews. He attended Forsyth County schools, graduating from Hanes High in 1954 and then attending Georgia Tech. From 1958 to 1971, he participated in the space program at Patrick AFB, Cape Canaveral and Cape Kennedy with Pan American World Airways, Brown Engineering Co. and Bendix Launch Support Division. He then served various companies in Virginia, Maryland, California and North Carolina, where he retired in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Betty Deal Clippard Matthews of the home; his former wife, Linda Foust Matthews of Clemmons; a daughter, Martiel Scott; and grandsons Preston and Ridge of Redmond, Wash.; two sons, Steve and his wife, Bobbie, of Mocksville and Todd and his wife, Mary, of Kure Beach; a stepson, Billy Clippard and his wife, Dana, and their children, Billy Paul and Lynsey Clippard; and a stepdaughter, Sheila Shuford and her husband, Tim, of Statesville and their children, Colton, Payton and Landon Shuford, all of Statesville; a sister, Betsy Heath and her husband, Larry, of Kannapolis; and a brother, Ron Matthews and his wife, Sandra, of Greenville, S.C. In lieu of services, Jim wished for his cremated remains to be scattered in the ocean. Jim would like all of his friends and family to celebrate living. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 132 Mount Hermon Road. The family wishes donations or memorials to be made to Hospice of Iredell County or Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund. Bunch Johnson Funeral Home of Statesville is serving the family of Mr. Matthews.

MICHAEL

LEXINGTON - Madge Harris Michael, 82, the wife of the late Ross White Michael, died Monday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reeds Baptist Church cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

MILLER

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Beulah Shore Miller, 94, passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Willowbrook Health Care. She was born May 13, 1907, in Yadkin County to the late Frank and Ither Reinhardt Shore. Mrs. Miller was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church in Hamptonville. She was preceded in death by her late husband of 53 years, Sidney Gaither Miller. Surviving are two sons, L.F. Miller and Lester Miller of Hamptonville; two daughters, Mrs. Nola (O.L.) Turbiville of Lakeland, Fla., and Mrs. Azelyne (Herbert) Collins of Hickory; three sisters, a twin sister, Mrs. Eulah Church and Mrs. Frankie Critz, both of Hamptonville, and Mrs. Lillie Buff of Charlotte; a brother, Roby Shore of Monroe; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Miller also was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Chester Shore. Her funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Flat Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Cannon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Flat Rock Baptist Church Building Fund, Flat Rock Church Road, Hamptonville.

CUMMING, Ga. - Mr. Gary W. Jones, 42, died Thursday. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald & Son Funeral Home, Cumming.

NUNEZ

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Marina "Wita" Nunez, 95, died early Monday morning, Jan. 14, 2002, at her home. She was born June 18, 1906, in Tampa, Fla., to Antonio and Mercedes Rios Castillo. Mrs. Nunez formerly resided in Armonk, N.Y., and was preceded in death by her husband, Domingo Nunez, and a son, Jaen Nunez. Surviving are a son, Augustine Farina, of Texas; and a daughter, Gloria Schmidt, of Lewisville; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Cook. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be in Colon cemetery in Tampa, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harmony Grove United Methodist Church, 5041 Styers Ferry Road, Lewisville, NC 27023; or Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the Nunez family.

POINDEXTER

ELKIN - Mrs. Marjorie Lloyd Poindexter, 95, of Parkwood Place passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Poindexter was born May 19, 1906, in Aurelia, Iowa, to Elliot and Zella Cottingham Lloyd. Mrs. Poindexter was a retired educator with Los Angeles city school system and was a deacon and elder of Elkin Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Poindexter was also a past member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills, Calif. Marjorie did her undergraduate studies at Carrolton College in Minneapolis, Minn., and graduated from UCLA. She served as a past president and charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO and United Nations Association in Los Angeles. She was a representative to the Synod and General Assembly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Turner Poindexter; two sisters, Dorothy Lloyd Wix and Jeanette Lloyd Williams; and a brother, Wright Lloyd. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James Lloyd and Jane Hanes Poindexter of State Road; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Poindexter and V. Louis Franks of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Ashland, Ore.; and three grandchildren, John Michael Turner Rodregez of Berkley, Calif., Susan Franks of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Christine Poindexter Schaub and husband Matthew of Raleigh. A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Hollywood cemetery by the Rev. Dale Walker. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Elkin Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at Wakefield Farm after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Elkin Presbyterian Church or to ECHO Ministries. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Poindexter family.

SAIN

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Margaret Bowles Sain, 94, of Bethel Church Road died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at her home. A native of Davie County, she was born July 24, 1907, the daughter of the late Henry and Eliza Jane Binkley Bowles. She was retired from Davie County government, with 31 years of service, and was a lifetime member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Sain; a son, Leonard Sain; a grandson, Ronnie Sain; a great-great-grandson, Hunter Queen; and five brothers. Survivors include a son, Cecil (Marjorie) Sain; two daughters, Mary Sparks and Ora Mae Miller and a daughter-in-law, Juanita Ward, all of Mocksville; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating. Interment will be in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eaton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mrs. Sain on Bethel Church Road. The family requests that memorials be considered for the Hospice of Davie County, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028.

SECHREST

LEXINGTON - Joyce Honeycutt Sechrest, 70, died Sunday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.

SHREVE

RURAL HALL - Mr. John Broadaus "Jake" Shreve Jr., 75, of 464 Academy St. died unexpectedly Sunday morning, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home. Mr. Shreve was born Aug. 27, 1926, in Forsyth County, the son of the late John B. Shreve Sr. and Minnie Turner Shreve. Mr. Shreve was a member of Kings-wood United Methodist Church and served on the board of trustees. Mr. Shreve was retired from Western Electric Co., with 36 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II and a member of the Rural Hall Civic Club. He was an Eagle Scout, and served as Explorer leader with Boy Scout Troop No. 914, with more than 15 years service. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lea Linville Baker Shreve of the home; two daughters, Cathy Lynch of Walnut Cove and Robin Trivette and husband Wayne of Southport; three sons, Barry Baker and wife Rosemary of Kernersville, Norris Baker and wife Kimberley of Winston-Salem and Linwood Baker and wife Robin of Kernersville; 10 grandchildren, Tracy and Ned Ryan Shadrick and Karie Shadrick (Keith Phillips), Josh Trivette and wife Melina, Jeremy, Jessica and Joey Trivette, Matthew Baker and Rachel and Kathleen Baker; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Carley Trivette and Craig and Bradley Phillips; a sister, Mrs. Doris Boyer of Fredricksburg, Va.; and four nieces and two nephews. Mr. Shreve was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Hardy Shreve; a daughter, Linda Shadrick; and a son-in-law, Bruce Lynch. A memorial service will be con-ducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Kingswood United Methodist Church by the Rev. Glenn S. Griffiths and the Rev. Ed Biggers. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The Shreve family will receive friends at its home. Memorials may be directed to Kingswood United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 399, Rural Hall, NC 27045. Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel will be assisting the Shreve family with arrangements and services.

SMITH

Mr. Corbett Davis Smith Jr., "June Bug," of 515 E. 14th St., a native and resident of Winston-Salem, died Jan. 10, 2002, at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was born Jan. 17, 1924, to the late Corbett and Ethel Davis Smith. He was a retired employee of the City of Winston-Salem and a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Maebell Smith, of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Betty Jean Smith and Linda Gruntrhope, of Winston-Salem; a son, David (Mary) Smith, of Ysplanti, Mich.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ellen McCloud and Briddie Bell Sims, both of Winston-Salem; two brothers-in-law, Thomas (Julia) McCloud and Robert McCloud, of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles E. Gray officiating. The family will meet with friends from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. (Brown)

LINDEN - Mrs. Ida Pearl Solis Smith, 74, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn. Mrs. Smith, a native of Harnett County, was born Dec. 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Luby and Hattie Lee Solis. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Marie Smith; a son, Robert Allen; two brothers, Velton Lee Solis and Willie B. Bryant; and two sisters, Dorothy Jean Bowden and Mamie Locklear. She was a member of Erwin Church of God and a member of Lexington Church of God. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Erwin Church of God with the Rev. Currie Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial cemetery in Dunn. She is survived by her husband, Allen Smith of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Joe "B.J." and Susan Smith of Winston-Salem (owner of B.J's Produce); a daughter, Shirley J. Smith of Coats; two brothers, Dallas Solis of Bunnlevel and W.R. Bryant of Cameron; three sisters, Mattie Belle Monds of Dunn, Vida Mae Thomas of Fayetteville and Mildred Hair of Sanford; and four grandchildren, Brittany Ann Smith, Holly Marie Smith, Kenneth Lee Hair and Kimberly Carol Hair. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cromartie Miller & Lee Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

SNIPES

GERMANTON - Mr. Paul Grady Snipes, 76, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home. He was born in Wilson County to the late Sidney and Mary Lee Bennett Snipes. He retired from Sara Lee in 1989 and was able to enjoy bowling as a serious hobby. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Rutledge Snipes, and daughter, Mary Frances Snipes, both of the home; his daughter, Ramona Stewart and husband Sammy of Germanton; two sisters, Margie Rice and husband Doug of Duqoin, Ill. and Mary Etta Batchelor and husband Raymond of Nashville, N.C.; a brother, Sidney Snipes Jr. and wife Peggy of Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Jeana, Jan and Adam Stewart. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sands officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites provided by King American Legion Post No. 290. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016.

TAYLOR

AUSTINVILLE, Va. - Mr. Clinton Rash Taylor passed away Sunday at Beverly Healthcare in Galax, Va. He was born in Carroll County, Va., to the late James Monroe and Martha Lawson Taylor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Easter Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a prominent cattle/horse farmer. He retired after 44 years from Bertha Mineral Co., which was a division of New Jersey Zinc Co. He was a member of the New River Trail Wagon Train and enjoyed riding regularly with other members. Mr. Taylor was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Adeen T. and William Randolph Myers of Winston-Salem and Hazel T. and Whitney Keys of Annapolis, Md.; a granddaughter and her husband, Adeen Bell and David Orth-Moore of Los Lunas, N.M.; three great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Shea and Jordan Orth-Moore; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne King of Richmond and the Rev. Ruth Ann Henley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. The family suggests that that those who prefer make memorials to the Bethany cemetery Fund, 4255 Fort Chiswell Road, Austinville, VA 24312.

TEAL

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mrs. Jessie Meares Teal, 91, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at National Health Care in Murrells Inlet, S.C. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church with Dr. Paul Layton officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Sidney and Augusta Paul Meares. Mrs. Teal worked as a secretary for many years at Davidson County College in Lexington and was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Surf Side Beach, S.C. Survivors include her husband, James Odell Teal; two daughters, Pat Teal Rudy of Greensboro and Debbie Teal Younts of Winston-Salem; and a granddaughter, Angelia Nicole Younts. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church, Chadbourn. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, 434 Fayetteville St. Mall, Raleigh, NC 27601. A service of Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

THOMPSON

Mrs. Dorothy Dobson Thompson, 79, of Winston-Salem died Monday. Funeral plans are incomplete at this time with Beasley's Funeral Service.

WAGNER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr.Marvin Hendersen "Pete" Wagner, 76, of Deadmon Road died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with Mr. Tom Torpy officiating. Interment will be in Turrentine Baptist Church Ceme-tery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. It requests that memorials be considered for the Davie County chapter of the American Heart Association, c/o Mrs. Patty Lookabill, BB&T, 119 Gaither St., Mocksville, NC 27028. Mr. Wagner was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Davie County to the late James Savanah and Stella B. Wofford Wagner and was retired from Celenese Corp. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby James and Dorothy McDaniel, and three brothers, George, Buddy and James Wagner. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Bailey Wagner of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; a daughter, Donna Shahpazian of Commings Ga.; a son, Ricky Wagner of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Merideth Shahpazian, Michael Shaphazian and Devin Wagner, four sisters, Helen Ratledge of Woodleaf, Mae Bailey of Omaha Neb., and Geraldine Hendrix and Barbara Ijames of Mocksville; a sister-in-law, Carol Wagner; and a devoted girlfriend, Faye Reeves, both of Mocksville.
