MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Madison "Mac" Lee Weddle, 74, of 323 East Wilson St., widower of Frances Brown Weddle, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Surry Community Nursing Center. Mr. Weddle was born in Surry County Nov. 1, 1927, the son of the late George Madison Weddle and Josephine Fulk Weddle. He was retired from Motor Supply, a member of Fancy Gap Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was a member of Grover King VFW Post 1115 of Hillsville, Va. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Libby and Wade Marion and Holly Weddle, all of Mount Airy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Debbie Weddle of Knoxville, Tenn. and Ronnie and Karen Weddle and Randle and Renee Weddle, all of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren, Ashley Marion of Rhonda, April Robinson of Gastonia, Cody Weddle, Casey Weddle, Heather Weddle, and Boone Weddle, all of Mount Airy and Joy Marie Weddle and Emily Weddle, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Price and Fannie Weddle and Donald and Glenda Weddle, all of Mount Airy, and James "Jim" and Betty Weddle of Titusville, Fla.. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Fancy Gap Baptist Church. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Dwight Sechrist. Burial will be at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Saturday night at Fancy Gap Baptist Church and other times at the home of a daughter, Libby Marion, 218 Cross Creek Drive, Mount Airy. WILLIAMS

Ms. Stacy Lee Williams, of 100 E. 30th St., departed this earthly life Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1937, in Winston-Salem to the late Marvin and Josephine Williams. Ms. Williams was a graduate of Atkins High School and Winston-Salem State University. She was a member of St. Phillips Moravian Church. In the community, she volunteered many years at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Kimberly W. Sales (Avery); four grandchildren, Micah, Sheria, Alyssa and Jared Sales, all of Charlotte; devoted cousins Wilson Wharton Jr., Linda Coaxum, Glenda Little and Adrienne Wharton; and a host of other friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Phillips Moravian Church with Dr. Cedric Rodney officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church.

ASHBY

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Elsie Wood Ashby, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. She was born in Stokes County to the late Luther and Sudie Stevens Wood. She was a homemaker and a member of Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was her husband, Earl Ashby; son Paul Dean Ashby; daughter-in-law Marianne Ashby and two brothers, Otha Wood and Zack Wood. Mrs. Ashby is survived by five children, Fran (George) Sevits of Sanford, Elwood (Jo Anne) Ashby of Walkertown, William Ashby of Rural Hall, Ray (Ann) Ashby of Germanton and Ronnie (Helga) Ashby of Tupelo, Miss.; a daugher-in-law, Betty Jean Ashby of Walnut Cove; a sister, Nell Pelkey of Mount Airy; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. An 11 a.m. graveside service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Northview Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at their own homes. Memorials may be made to Northview Primitive Baptist Church cemetery Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice.

BODENHIEMER

Mrs. Susie Burcham Bodenheimer, 94, passed away Friday Jan. 25, 2002, at Brookridge Retirement Home. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with burial to follow at New Philadelphia Moravian Church. BRAY

YADKINVILLE - Mr. James Poindexter Bray Jr., 56, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Bray was born Nov. 1, 1945, in Surry County to James P. Bray Sr. and Merline Booe Bray. Mr. Bray was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 24 years of service and was a member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting. He was a member of Harmon Masonic Lodge No. 420 and was an avid outdoorsman, whose passion was hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time on the coast at Emerald Isle. Mr. Bray was preceded in death by his father. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Carolyn Reavis Bray of the home; a daughter, Angela Bray Merryman and husband Bill of Huntersville; a son, James P. Bray III and wife Angie of Yadkinville; a grandson; James P. "Dex" Bray IV; his mother, Merline Booe Bray of Yadkinville. The funeral service for Mr. Bray will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Harmony Grove Friends Meeting by the Rev. Harold Salmons and the Rev. Billy Britt. Mr. Bray will lie in state from 10:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. Hwy. 601 N., Yadkinville, N.C. Flowers will be accepted but memorials may be made to Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, c/o Paulette Wright, 1016 Abbott St., Yadkinville, NC 27055.

BROOKS

Mrs. Gladys Bryant Brooks, 71, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002. She was born to the late Wilburn and Myrtle Bryant on May 6, 1930, in Surry County. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Providence Moravian Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Along with her parents, her brother, Alton Bryant, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Harold Brooks, of the home; a daughter and best friend, Tina Allen (Michael), of Winston-Salem; two special grandsons, Brandon and Eric Allen; three sisters, Doris Marion (Jack) of Pinnacle, Nellie Moore (Lonnie) of Mount Airy and Peggy Woodson (Robert) of Mount Airy; two brothers, Randall Bryant (Jo Ann) of Mount Airy and Rodger Bryant (Carol) of Thomasville; two stepdaughters, Becky Sanderford and Sherri Brooks and a stepgrandson, Lee Cleary, all of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Providence Moravian Church. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. The Rev. Akron Stewart will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel and at other times at the family home. Memorials may be made to Providence Moravian Church.

BROWN

Mr. Paul Douglas Brown, 61, of 3300 Starlight Drive, Apt. 12, departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on April 1, 1940, to Elliott and Jessie Ann Brown in Winston-Salem. He attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, spent most of his adult life in Los Angeles, Calif., and Washington, D.C. He was a baker by trade (a journeyman) and worked for Royal Bakery here and retired from American Bakery in Washington, D.C. He joined First Waughtown Baptist Church under Pastor Dennis W. Bishop and completed the new convert class under the late Minister Phyllis Lattimore. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Sammie Lee, Robert Lee, Geneva, Elizabeth, Alfonzo, Lula Bell and Charlotte. He is survived by two sons, Michael Brown of Los Angeles, Calif., and Paul Brown Jr. of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter and two grandsons; three brothers, Elder Roscoe Brown (Shirley) of Suitland, Md., Swindell Brown and Elliott Brown Jr. (Charlie Mae) of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Delores Brown of Los Angeles, Calif. and Dorothy Herron of Ingelwood, Calif.; a devoted niece and nephew, Ann Brown and Ervin Shakir; a host of other nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. The family expresses gratitude to the High Point Care Center and Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home. Homegoing services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the First Waughtown Baptist Church with Senior Pastor Dennis W. Bishop officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. STATESVILLE - Mrs. Yvonne Marie Phelps Caldwell, 76, beloved mother and grandmother, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Davis Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on May 10, 1925, to David D. and Stella Foster Phelps. She was an associate member of Ardmore Moravian Church, a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church. She was a gardener, bridge player, gourmet cook and a talented pianist. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dr. Eston Robert Caldwell Jr. Surviving are five children, Dr. David Stewart Caldwell and wife Vickie of Hillsborough, Susan Caldwell Madison and husband Tony of Statesville, Dr. Eston Robert Caldwell III and wife Lynne of Winchester, Va., Lynn Caldwell Vessells and husband Steve of Lynchburg, Va., Dr. Steve Hugh Caldwell and wife Cathy of Charlottesville, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Anna C. Freehling, Erin C. Vaughn, Loren Ruth Caldwell, Joel Patrick Cline Jr., Andrew C. Madison, William S. Madison, Benjamin P. Madison, Adam C. Caldwell, Emily C. Janssen, Megan L. Caldwell, Gabriel C. Caldwell, Garland O. Caldwell, Ian H. Caldwell, Norah R. Caldwell and Mary C. Caldwell; a great-grandchild, Louisa Janssen; three brothers, D.D. Phelps, Stephen Phelps, Jake Phelps. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Moravian Graveyard by the Rev. Kevin C. Frack and the Rev. Steve Snipes. CULBRETH

THOMASVILLE - Mr. David K. Culbreth Sr. died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Thomasville Community General Hospital. He was 79 years old. Family will receive friends at Trinity Baptist Church on Highway 62 in Trinity on Monday, Jan. 29, in Hope Mills at the Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Hope Mills. As a caring husband, father, and grandfather, David is survived by his three children, Ruth C. Smith, David K. Culbreth Jr., and Carolyn M. Hoglen; seven grandchildren, Chris Smith, Aaron Smith, Tracey Smith, Whitney Culbreth, Lauren Culbreth, Keith Hoglen, and Jeremiah Hoglen; and four great grandchildren. His wife, Mildred Culbreth, predeceased him. Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home of Hope Mills is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church.

DAVIS

Mr. Francis Edward "Frank" Davis, 78, of 3300 Royalton St. passed away Jan. 26, 2002. Frank was born on May 15, 1923, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel B. Davis in Forsyth County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, first in the Blackhawk Infantry Division, then the 11th Airborne Division stationed in the Pacific and finally as a forward observer for the 675th Field Artillery. He left the service with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Davis was a retired civil servant. He was active with the First Presbyterian Church, Crisis Control Ministry and the Elks Club and was a member of the American Legion. There will be a graveside service conducted Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery by Dr. Jeff White and the Rev. Ginny Britt. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Thelma Davis; a son, Ed Davis, and daughter-in-law, Pam; two grandchildren, Taylor and Sarah; four sisters, Inez Calloway, Mary Holton, Betty Brown and Ann Goodson; and two brothers, Robert and Jerry Davis. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 300 North Cherry St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road is in charge of services.

FRANKLIN

Psalm 121:1-2: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth." It was early Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, when the angel of the Lord reached out its everlasting arms and said, "Come unto me and rest." Our beloved Ms. Evelyn Yvette Franklin of 978 Woodleaf Court was summoned home to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Evelyn, a.k.a., "Vet" was born Dec. 8, 1955, to the late Thomas Britton and Mrs. Ida M. Franklin Penn in Winston-Salem. Vet attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1973. She was also a graduate of Winslam Business College with an associate degree in business and attended Forsyth Technical Community College. Vet was employed at BellSouth Communications for 22 years. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk/secretary, a willing worker of the nurses' board, the program committee and pulpit committee. She leaves not to mourn but to cherish many memories, a son, Tramayne A. Franklin of the home; a loving and devoted mother and best friend, Mrs. Ida M. Franklin Penn of the home; two brothers, Ronald R. (Deborah) Franklin of Winston-Salem and Kenneth B. (Deidra) Franklin of Atlanta; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn F. Shouse of Winston-Salem; two devoted uncles, James and Samuel Franklin, both of Winston-Salem; several other uncles and aunts of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Tramayne R., Travonte D. and Tanwan S. Franklin, all of Winston-Salem; two nephews and a niece; her loving and devoted fiance and soul mate, Deacon James Parms of Winston-Salem; two loving and devoted friends, Charlene Duncan and Vanessa Miller, both of Winston-Salem; a loving sister-in-Christ, Phyllis Morning; and a host of devoted friends and admirers. She cherished and loved her BellSouth family and the Mount Carmel Baptist Church family. Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, from the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. A.T. Griffey officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. FULK

DANBURY - Mr. James Clyde Fulk, 80, of Hanging Rock Park Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County, Oct. 16, 1921, son of the late James William and Maude Booth Fulk. He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mozelle Southern, and brothers Earlie, Royce, and David Fulk. Surviving are his wife, Bertha Brown Harrison Fulk; two step-daughters, Shirley H. (Tommy) Mabe of Danbury and Betty H. Lankford of Westfield; a stepson, Ted (Kathy) Harrison, of Danbury; two brothers, Percy Fulk and Billy Fulk, both of Danbury; four step-grandchildren, Beth Mabe Gianopulos, Ronnie Lankford, Jason Harrison and Ben Harrison. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel by Elder J.H. Keaton and Elder Rodney Marshall. Burial will be at Cedar Falls Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel. GAMBLE

Mr. Robert Lee Gamble, 77, of Winston-Salem died Jan. 26, 2002, at his home. He was born in Clinton, Tenn., to E. F. and Ella Diggs Gamble and he grew up and was educated in Harriman, Tenn. Mr. Gamble was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1990 and was a charter member of Union Cross Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Juanita Miller Gamble; two brothers, Rodolph and Kenneth Gamble; and a sister, Mary Alice Shelton. Mr. Gamble was always a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Charles Leonard of Union Cross and Debbie and Barry Saintsing of Arcadia; four grandchildren, Charlene, Catherine, Barry Jr. and Jessica; a great-granddaughter Lillian and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 29, 2002, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. James L. Doss officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. HAIRSTON

Mr. Mondell Franklin Hairston, formally of 814 Rich Ave., departed his life on Jan. 24, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Jan. 8, 1935, to the late Rev. Aquilla Vancy Hairston and Cleo Hale Hairston. He was a graduate of Atkins High School and attended Winston-Salem State University. Mr. Hairston was a retired jeweler. He was a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Mondell Hairston Jr. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted ex-wife and longtime friend, Ms. Viola R. Hairston; a son, Kevin Robbins; two daughters, Viveta Hairston and Mondella Hairston; a stepson, Staccato Robbins; four stepdaughters, Jennifer and Valarie Robbins, all of Winston-Salem, Davette R. Barker of Charlotte, and Trina B. Forrest of Kernersville; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, William R. Hairston of the city and Aquilla Y. Hairston Jr. of Oklahoma City; an uncle, Patrick Hairston, and aunt, Plaine Hairston, both of the city. A host of nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at United Metropolitan Missionary Church with Minister J. Donald Ballard, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the home of a daughter, Ms. Viveta Hairston, 23-D Salem Garden Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. All services are entrusted to Beasley's Funeral Services of Winston-Salem.

BOONE - John Michael Hale, 3-year-old son of Michael Scott and Amanda Kitt Hale, drowned Saturday in Banner Elk. Graveside service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens in Boone. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. (Monday) at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone.

HAMBY

WILKESBORO - Mrs. Gaynell Lovette Atwood Hamby, 80, of Highway 268 West, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Hamby was born March 9, 1921, in Wilkes County to Richard T. and Connie Bishop Lovette. She was a member of Gordon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Grandon C. Atwood, and her second husband, James Colonel Hamby. Surviving are four sons, Rick Atwood of Wilkesboro, Clyde Atwood of Wendell, Frank Atwood of Mechanicsville, Va., and Mac Atwood of North Wilkesboro; two daughters, Judy Craft of Lewisville and Connie Blankenship of Wilkesboro; three sisters, Sallie Hayes of Purlear, Bettie Stewart of Lewisville and Madeline Eller of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Gordon Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Adams and the Rev. James Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Arbor Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Gordon Baptist Church, 283 Boone Trail, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Miller Funeral Service of North Wilkesboro is in charge of arrangements.

HENDREN

MORAVIAN FALLS - Mr. Carroll Gray Hendren, 65, of Bethany Church Road died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Baptist Church in the Brushy Mountain Community with the Rev. Don Blevins and the Dr. Dean Simpson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Hendren was born in Surry County, July 29, 1936, to Ed B. and Zenna Beshears Hendren. He was a deacon at Bethany Baptist Church. Mr. Hendren was on the board of directors at First Citizens Bank & Trust. He was a member of the Ruritan Club, N.C. Apple Growers Association, and Teacher of Prophecy. Mr. Hendren is survived by his wife, Betty L. Hendren, of the home; a daughter, Misty Hall, of Clemmons; three sons, Gregg Hendren and Chad Hendren, both of Moravian Falls, and Justin Hendren of Pisgah Forest; his mother, Zenna Beshears Hendren of North Wilkesboro, and five grandchildren. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Ms. Coleen Taylor, 875 Vannoy Ridge Road, Moravian Falls, NC 28654.
