QUESINBERRY

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Ida Mae Hutson Quesinberry, 82, of 111 Sportsman Trail, the widow of Mr. Rupert Ray "Crick" Quesinberry, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. Quesinberry was born July 4, 1919, in Surry County to the late William Turner and Martha Ada Tolbert Hutson. She was retired from Proctor Silex and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Surviving are four daugh-ters and sons-in-law, Donnies and Lonnie Johnson of Ararat, Norma and Roger Atkins of Stanleyville and Brenda and Ron Hall and Debbie and Danny Brindle, all of Mount Airy; six sons and daughters-in-law, Rex and Maedell Quesinberry, Larry and Rhonda Quesinberry, Roger and Lou Quesinberry and Greg and Lynn Quesinberry, all of Mount Airy, Jimmy and Jeraldine Quesinberry of Dobson and Grant and Cindy Quesinberry of Mount Airy; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and special friends. Sanford and Margaret Creed, Annie Isom and Nellie Younger. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Quesinberry was preceded in death by two sisters, Clersie Edmonds and Bertha Hutson; five brothers, Murphy Hutson, Albert Hutson, Willie Hutson, Monroe Hutson and Brady Hutson; and an infant daughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Teague Groce, the Rev. Larry Phillips, the Rev. Ray Hutson and the Rev. Ron Hall Burial will follow in the Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday night at the funeral home.

SHELTON

LAWSONVILLE - Mrs. Ruby Snow Shelton, 79, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Grayson County, Va., the daughter of the late John William and Rose Ella Bobbitt Snow. Mrs. Shelton was retired from Macfield Manufacturing in Madison and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Shelton. Surviving are a son, Franklin (Chris) Hiatt, of Mayodan, and a brother, Jesse Taylor, of Collinsville, Va. Mrs. Shelton requested that no funeral service be held. Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Nelson Funeral Home.

TISE

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Clyde Joseph Tise, 79, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 15, 1922, in Forsyth County to Paul E. and Lillie Mae Doty Tise. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Vulcan Materials Co. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Surviving are his wife, Connie Davis Tise, of the home; a daughter, Rebecca Kyles and husband, Jimmie, of Pfafftown; three sons, Ricky Tise and wife, Nancy, of Pinnacle, Garry Tise and wife, Nita, of Booneville and Jerry Tise and wife, Helen, of Colfax; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two foster sons, Steve March, of Clemmons and Bolt Fryar of the home; two sisters, Pauline Newman, of California and Elizabeth Renigar of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Paul E. Tise, of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thurs-day at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. John Winfrey. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory, with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

WATSON

ELKIN - Mrs. Cora Payne Watson, 81, of 215 S. Wall St. passed away Monday morning, Jan. 14, 2002, at Elkin Healthcare Center. Cora was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Surry County to Hardin C. Pruitt and Vera Jolly Pruitt. Cora was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church in Elkin. Her parents, a brother and two sisters preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Ernest Watson, of the home; two sons, Charles Odell Payne, of the home and Curley L. and Pansy Payne, of Mount Airy; three sisters, Kathleen Payne, of Elkin, Laura Sue Luffman, of Thomasville and Margaret Marion of Elkin; a brother, Clay Pruitt, of Ronda; five grandchildren; four great-grand-children; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. The Rev. Larry Macemore will hold funeral services at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Maple Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. The family has requested that memorials be made to Maple Springs Baptist Church instead of flowers. ANDERSON

LAWSONVILLE - Mr. Steven Lewis Anderson, 25, of 1105 Lum Hall Road passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. He was born Feb. 20, 1976, in Patrick County, Va., to Don Lewis Anderson and Brenda McHone Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a print operator and a member of Dan River Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother, Brenda McHone Anderson Westfield; his father and stepmother, Don Lewis and Ann Anderson of the home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Teresa and Richie Roberts of Westfield and Susan and Tony Martin of Danbury; a half sister, Heather Anderson of the home; maternal grandparents, Sanders and Eula McHone of Westfield; paternal grandmother, Nannie Lou Anderson of Westfield; a niece and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lewis Anderson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rickey Rogers and the Rev. Brent Sawyers. Interment will follow in the Dan River Baptist Church cemetery. AUSTIN

BOONE - Johnnie Robert Austin, 66, of Camp Rock Road died Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 2002, at his home. Mr. Austin was a member and was past deacon of the First Baptist Church. He was a 1957 graduate of Appalachian State University and obtained his funeral-service education diploma in 1958 from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Johnnie was president and co-owner of Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone since 1975. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Electric Membership Board of Directors for 31 years and served as president of the board for 21 years and on various state and national rural electric cooperative boards including NRECA, CFC, and the Federated Insurance Board. He also served on the board of directors of the First Union National Bank in Boone. Mr. Austin was a member of Snow Lodge #363 AF & AM. Mr. Austin is survived by his wife, Carolyn G. Austin; two sons, Douglas R. Austin and wife Paula of Raleigh and Michael J. Austin and wife Teresa of Boone; a daughter, Nancy R. Austin of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Rachel and Matthew Austin of Raleigh; his father, E.C. Austin of Hudson; three brothers, Jerry Austin and wife Geneva of Granite Quarry, Steven Austin and wife Reba of Lawndale and Donald Austin and wife Happy of Boone and a sister, Mary Jo Setzer and husband Max of Hudson. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Hall Austin. Funeral services for Johnnie R. Austin will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Boone officiated by the Rev. Mark Chaney and the Rev. James D. Hagman. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. JONESVILLE - Mr. David Leon Billips, 48, of 309 Mathis St. passed away Jan. 19, 2002, at his home. Mr. Billips was born April 3, 1952, in Premier, W.Va., to Herman Eugene, Sr., and Lockett Martin Billips. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Carolyn Logene Billips. David is survived by his mother, Lockett Billips of the home; three brothers, Ronald Lee Billips of the home, Michael (Sherry) Billips and Herman (Ressie) Billips, both of Jonesville; four sisters, Peggy Bailey, Joyce (David) Martin, Delores Billips and Jacqueline (Dexter) Strickland, all of Jonesville; a great-uncle, Joe Martin of Ronda; three uncles; five aunts; 13 nieces; 11 nephews and 17 great-nieces and nephews and a host of loving cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Anna Jarvis Methodist Church cemetery. BUTLER

RALEIGH - Mrs. Stella R. Butler, 86, widow of J.J. Butler, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church with burial to be at Forsyth Memorial Park at 4 p.m. Visitation will be held at the Cary Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Butler was born July 23, 1915, in Elizabeth, N.J., and moved to Winston-Salem with her family in 1947, where she became an active member in the Saint Leo The Great Catholic Church. She began her career at Thalhimers in Winston-Salem. She then moved to Raleigh in 1976, where she continued working with Thalhimers until her retirement after 27 years. She was an active member of Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church of Cary. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Judith B. Doss and Michael Doss of Raleigh; daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline B. Smith and Robert Smith of Winston-Salem; daughter Janeen B. Benedetto of San Diego, Calif.; son, Kenneth M. DRAUGHN

ELKIN - Mr. Wilson Eugene Draughn, 88, of Austin Traphill Road passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Draughn was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Surry County to Everette and Ella Stanley Draughn. Mr. Draughn retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was an electrician. He was also a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Gaither, Clarence, Claude, Braxton and Irvy Draughn, five sisters, Minnie Draughn, Glady Hamlin, Mammie Simmons, Pearl Moser and Hattie Holyfield. Survivors include his wife, Estallene Jolly Draughn of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Johnny Maynard of Pfafftown, Janice and Allen Snow of Thurmond and Joyce and Harrol Tuttle of Winston-Salem; three stepchildren, Shirley and Ray Atkinson of Winston-Salem, Robin and Lawrence Winfrey of Boonville and Scott and Sandy Jolly of North Wilkesboro; five grandchildren, Curtis Myers, Tony Myers, Deana Cochran, Robert Snow and Danielle Snow; four stepgrandchildren, Penny Atkinson, Joseph Winfrey, Mason Winfrey and Victoria Jolly; two great-grandchildren, April and Matthew Myers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Swan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Sammy Shoaf, the Rev. Finley McCoury and the Rev. Ray White. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Draughn will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the donor's choice. DUNBAR

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. James Dunbar, 86, of 204 James Dunbar Road, widower of Thelma Holder Dunbar, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Dunbar was born in Surry County on Nov. 8, 1915, the son of the late Banner Dunbar and Jennie Amburn Dunbar, was a member of Midway Baptist Church and the Round Peak Masonic Lodge 616 AF & AM. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Phillip West of Kernersville, a son and daughter-in-law, Buck and Sandra Dunbar of Kernersville; three grandchildren and spouses, Brian Dunbar and wife Lela, Denise Phelps and husband John, and Tori West and four great-grandchildren; Jesse Dunbar, Brianna Dunbar, Savanah Phelps and Dalton Phelps. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Phillips and the Rev. Butch Holder with burial to follow in the church cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Round Peak Masonic Lodge 616 AF & AM. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m., where his body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the services.

JONES

PETERSBURG, Va. - Walter Raleigh Jones Jr., 90, died Dec. 29, 2001, at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was born in Nanton, Alberta Province, Canada, the son of Walter Raleigh Jones Sr. and Edith White Fayssoux of Mount Airy and Gastonia. A 1928 graduate of Rockingham High School, he attended Citizens military Training Camp 4th Corps Area in Fort Bragg in 1928 where he received the medal for being the outstanding fourth-year student. In 1920, he enrolled at Fishburne military School postgraduate 1930, also the University of North Carolina earning AB and LLB degrees in 1935. He attended a year at Northwestern University in Chicago. He held memberships in Epsilon Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at UNC and Booth Chapter of Phi Delta Phi, Legal Fraternity at Northwestern. He was active in football and baseball throughout his school years, lettering on both teams his freshman year at UNC. His law career began in Rockingham, with practice in his father's firm, (1935-1964) until he accepted a partnership with the firm of Blackwell, Blackwell, Canady, Eller & Jones, in Winston-Salem. First retired in 1978, moved to Savannah, Ga., where he served as vice president of Builders Transport Co. for two years, after which he returned to Winston-Salem. Employed by the Navy Department in 1940, he was placed in charge of land acquisitions for Camp LeJeune, the Marine base at Jacksonville. In 1941, he received his commission in U.S. Naval Reserves as Lt. J.G., trained at NAS (Naval Air Station) in Quonset Point, R.I. Then from NAS, Norfolk was assigned to Escort Carrier Squadron CVS26 attached to USS Sangamon and served in African invasion as well as at Guadalcanal and the Philippines. His final assignment as lieutenant commander was to the staff of chief of naval air training, Pensacola NAS, until the end of hostilities in 1945. In 1942, he married Nell Jackson Hemphill of Petersburg, Va., who died in 1981. He is survived by his wife, Nan Seward Jones of Petersburg, Walter R. Jones III, Wilmington; daughters Nell H. Jones of Atlanta, Ga., and Edith J. Humphreys of Mozambique, Africa; grandchildren, Jan Jones of Colorado, Russell Jones of Wilmington, Thomas D. Perrie of Atlanta, Ga., Ashlin Humphreys and Zoe Humphreys of Mozambique, Africa. In addition to serving as vestryman at The Episcopal Church of The Messiah in Rockingham, he also was vestryman at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Petersburg, Va, served as board member of both the APVA and Historic Petersburg Foundation. A memorial service will be held Feb. 3 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Petersburg, Va., at the 10:30 a.m. service. Interment and memorial service will be held in Winston-Salem at a time to be announced later. Memorial gifts may be sent to Saint Paul's Church, P.O. KELLY

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Daniel Jasper Kelly, 73, died Sunday morning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following a short bout with cancer. He was born in Tampa, Fla., on Sept. 28, 1928, and grew up in Wilmington. He worked for Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem and Raleigh, retiring after 37 years as vice president in the Trust Department. Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Iris of the home; a daughter Dana Butler and husband Ted of Greensboro; a son Jeff Kelly and wife Lynn of Kernersville; and four grandchildren, Kelly and Todd Butler and Michael and Kristen Kelly. He is also survived by a brother, Harold L. Kelly of Wilmington, Del., and a sister Faye Bryant of Rieglewood, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Donald Farrow officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Private burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

MATTHEWS

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Midas Clay Matthews, 61, of Rock House Mountain Road passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 20, 1940, in Yadkin County to Marvin and Lucy Southard Matthews. Mr. Matthews was retired from the N.C. Department of Correction as an correctional officer, and was a member of North Oak Ridge Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving overseas during the Berlin Crisis, and was also a member of Yadkin VFW Post 10346. He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Barbara Stinson; and a brother, Addis Matthews. Surviving are his wife, Martha Evans Matthews of the home; four children, Tina Matthews of Hamptonville, Rocky (Lynn) Matthews of Hamptonville, Gina (Michael) Brown of Hamptonville and Tonie (Timothy) Church of Ramstein, Germany; his mother, Lucy Southard Matthews of Hamptonville; two sisters, Nancy (Albert) Day of Elkin and Patty (James) Dowell of Boonville; three brothers, Junior Matthews of Stoney Point, Paul (Francis) Matthews of Yadkinville and Carl (Colleen) Matthews of Yadkinville; sister-in-law Ann Matthews of Winston-Salem; brother-in-law Bill Stinson of Hamptonville; eight granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Randy Johnson and Chaplain A.G. Parker. Burial will follow at Marler Road Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors by the Northern District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.

McMILLAN

Mrs. Thelma Gray Ward McMillan, 98, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Arbor Acres. She was born Dec. 5, 1903, in Stokes County to the late Walter W. Ward and Lily Flynn Ward. Mrs. McMillan was a lifetime member of Burkhead United Methodist Church and was a member for many years of the Suzanne Wesley Methodist Circle. She was preceded in death Oct. 4, 1980, by her husband, John Bryan McMillan. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 43 years of service. Thelma was devoted to all of her family, especially her nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Peggy Ward Miller and husband, William B. Miller of Pfafftown, Col. Larry N. Ward, U.S.M.C. retired, and wife Nina D. Ward of Charleston, S.C., Robert W. Ward and wife Alyce W. Ward of Moore, S.C., Carolyn Ward Sheviak of Clemmons, Frances Ellison Anglin and husband Ivan Anglin of Gainsville, Ga., Gene Ellison of Utah; a special sister-in-law, Doris V. Ward; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Her great nephews will serve as pallbearers. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Interment will follow at Salem cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Mae Stewart Miller, 77, of Liberty Church Road passed away Jan. 19, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Feb. 5, 1924, in Yadkin County to the late Jim and Rose Reece Stewart. Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a loving mother and Granny Miller to her family and community children that she kept. She was a member of Courtney Baptist Church. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred Miller, on Nov. 12, 1981, two brothers, James Stewart and Howard Stewart and by a sister. Surviving are her son, Jimmy (Elisa) Miller, Yadkinville; three daughters, Elaine "Bootsie" (Marvin) Moore, Hilda (Ronnie) Reavis, Becky (Bobby) Moody, all of Yadkinville; nine grandchildren, Mark (Penny) Moore, Mindy (Benji) Moore, Bleu (Tammy) Reavis, Chasity Reavis and Jason, Stephanie (Lewis) Brown, Crystal (Mark) Jackson, Angie (Joel) Cass, Travis Miller and Nicholas Miller; 12 great-grandchildren, Justin Brown, Michael Brown, Tina Williams, Becca Williams, Brittany Jackson, Ashley Jackson, Dakota Jackson, Craig Moore, Natalie Moore, Alex Moore, Christian Reavis, Mason Reavis; three brothers, LeRoy (Clair) Stewart of Kernersville, John (Ellar) Stewart of Boonville and Reece Stewart of Boonville; six sisters, Pauline Burgess, Grace Head of Mocksville, Amy Ridge of Greenville, S.C., Billie Brown of Yadkinville, Jean Brown of Boonville and Peggy (Clyde) Lipe of Salisbury. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Kenny Smith and the Rev. John Brown. Burial will follow in the Turner's Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

LEXINGTON - Billy Duran Mize, 56, died Saturday evening at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Beulah United Church of Christ. Davidson Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MYERS-NORWOOD

Lillian Wood Myers-Norwood, 89, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 20, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Yadkin County on June 27, 1912, the daughter of the late W. Preston and Victoria Cummings Wood. She was a charter member of the Forsyth Friends Meeting. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and worked at Western Electric, where she made many friends. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Charles A. Norwood of the home, her only daughter, Vickey Myers Duncan and her husband Elbert Dean Duncan of Cornelius, and a granddaughter, Catherine Myers Duncan of Charlotte, two stepsons, Charles Ronald Norwood and wife Jane C. Norwood and Donald E. Norwood and wife Marlene B. Norwood. In addition to her parents, Lillian was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Noble Myers, in 1987 and five brothers and a sister, all of Yadkin County. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Chapel by the Rev. Victor Murchison and Myron Leonhard. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the loving care she received. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
