KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Roby Frances Watson, 66, a resident of 111 Cedar Grove Lane, died Friday evening, March 1, 2002, at his residence. He was born April 4, 1935, in Surry County, a son of the late Joseph Enoch Watson and Sarah Flannery Watson. He was a self-employed painter. He attended Crestview Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his fiancee, A. Faye Branson of Kernersville; two sons, Roby (Pee Wee) Watson and wife, Tina of Winston-Salem and Dwight (Ike) Watson of Thomasville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bobby Watson and Roger Watson, both of King, Grady Watson and Larry Watson, both of Kernersville; two sisters, Flora Cox of Archdale and Faye Ellis of Greensboro. Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his only daughter, Carolyn (Suzi) Watson, two brothers, Junior Watson and Bill Watson and two sisters, Wilma Cox and Ginney Cox. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating in J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Thomasville from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home. The family requests memorials be directed to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WILLIAMS

Mrs. Fannie M. Williams, 74, of 1712 Harrison Ave. departed this life Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 23, 1927, in Winston-Salem to the late William and Beulah Booe Murrell. Mrs. Williams was a 1944 graduate of Atkins High School and a 1948 graduate of North Carolina Central University in Durham. Her professional career included positions as secretary in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, secretarial science instructor at Russell Business College and several key administrative posts at Winston-Salem State University. During her 34-year career at the university, she served as director of admissions, assistant to the chancellor, director of personnel, director of the Anderson Center and director of special projects. She also chaired the convocations committee and coordinated numerous major assemblies. Following her retirement in 1996, she worked part-time in customer assistance in the State Employees Credit Union and as a substitute teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Mrs. Williams worked tirelessly in her community as a member and past president of the Boston-Thurmond Neighborhood Association, the Board of Directors of Today's Woman Wellness Center, Leadership Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Chapter of the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association. She especially loved her church, the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ever Ready Bible class of Sunday church school and the Hospitality Club. Her leadership of the dedication committee and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new church facility earned many accolades for her stellar work. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Leva, Frank, Mansfield and Phoil Murrell, a sister, Thelma Jones, a niece, Beverly M. Whitehead, a nephew, W. Gordon Drake and a grandnephew, Richard A. Payne. She leaves to cherish fond memories, her husband of 53 years, Joseph D. Williams Sr., and a son, Joseph D. Williams Jr.; a granddaughter, Ashley D. Williams of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; a sister, Novella M. Drake, and a goddaughter, Marilyn L. Roseboro. Other loving relatives include a sister-in-law, Bernice Murrell, brothers-in-law, James D. (Mozelle) Williams and Peter D. (Monique) Williams; nieces, Barbara M. (Richard) Payne of Bay City, Mich., Beulah Murrell (John) Newby of Columbia, Md., Deborah Kay Murrell of Oakland, Calif., Tammy W. (Charles) Blackwell of Bloomfield, N.J., Jarnette B. Williams of Alexandria, Va., Linda Murrell, Joyce Jones and Shandra K. Williams; nephews, Benjamin D. (Patricia) Murrell, B. Christopher Murrell, W. Preston Drake, Wayne K. Drake, Gary Jones, Don Jones, Jackie Jones, Thomas Jones, Jr. of Columbia, S.C., Levon Jones of Atlanta and L.J. Whitehead of Savannah, Ga. Other survivors include grandnieces, Michelle J. Payne of Newark, N.J., Lisa M. Murrell of Charlotte, Kimberly N. (Benjamin) Wells of Ellicott City, Md., Amy N. (Wayne) Collier of Laurel, Md., Patrice L. Whitehead and Monica D. Whitehead of Savannah, Ga. Tameka Drake and Shawaynia Drake; grandnephews, Patrick Drake, Dennard Drake, Eric Drake, Denoris Drake, Marquis Drake, Tyler Drake and Malik Drake along with several generations of other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. Donald Ballard officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. In lieu of floral tributes, the family asks that donations be made to the Winston-Salem State University Foundation Inc., CB 19537, Winston-Salem, NC 27110 for the Fannie M. LEXINGTON - Ralph Edward Elkins, 77, the husband of the late Anna Potts Elkins, died Saturday in Clemmons Village. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

FLEMING

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Lillie Childress Fleming, 81, of 402 Galloway St., the wife of the late Grady Fleming, passed away at home on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. Mrs. Fleming was born in Surry County on May 21, 1920, the daughter of Robert Summerfield Childress and Beatrice Bowman Childress. Mrs. Fleming was retired from Quality Mills Inc. and was a member of the Mount Airy Church Of God. Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte Fleming of Elmhurst, N.Y.; a sister, Claudia Woods of Mount Airy; two brothers, Larry Childress and Jack Childress, both of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Fleming was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted Childress, Eugene Childress and William Clarence Childress. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Brannock, Dr. Wilford Lyerly and the Rev. Charles Powers. Burial will follow in Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

HICKS

LEXINGTON - Grady Edward Hicks, 71, of 3535 Winston Road died March 1, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March. 3, 2002, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel by the Rev. David Hicks. Burial will be held in the Reedy Creek Baptist Church cemetery. military graveside rites will be conducted by Fort Bragg. Mr. Hicks was born May 4, 1930, in Davidson County to Oscar Hicks, Sr. and Bertha Jeffries Hicks Sink. He was a former plant manager for Landsman Packing Co., a food-processing company. Mr. Hicks served the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a lifelong member of AmVets. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie Hege, Ruby Temple, Mildred Michael and Gladys Walser. He is survived by sons Ricky Edward Hicks of Arizona, Ronald Craig Hicks of Winston-Salem, Dannie Ray Hicks and Eddie Gray Hicks, both of Lexington; daughter Jewel Ann Baker of Thomasville; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a special granddaughter, Dawn Brasher; two stepchildren; brothers W.O. Hicks Jr. of Mocksville and Billy Hicks of Walnut Cove; and a sister, Mary Foltz of Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel, and other times at the home.

HUDSON

DOBSON - Mr. William Henry Hudson, 79, of 1683 Prison Camp Road, husband of Annie Loraine Hutchens Hudson, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury. Mr. Hudson was born in Surry County on Oct. 14, 1922, the son of the late William Mallory and Leannah Wood Hudson. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II, retired from Dobson Trucking, and was a member of Central View Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Annie Loraine Hutchens Hudson of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice Hudson of Mount Airy and Marcy and Tim Koroll of Ararat; a granddaughter, LeAnn Pike of Mount Airy; a great grandson, Cole Pike of Mount Airy; a sister, Rebecca Blue of Dobson; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Odell Hudson of Durham and Oliver and Faye Hudson of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hudson was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth May and a brother, Mallory Hudson. The funeral service will be held Monday, March 4, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Dobson. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Marty Nixon, and burial in the Central View Baptist Church cemetery, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Dobson.

HUGHES

Mr. Reuben Hughes, 76, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at The Oaks at Forsyth. Mr. Hughes was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Forsyth County to James Reuben and Dora Hayes Hughes. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a retired employee of AT&T. Mr. Hughes was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, where he served as an elder and a trustee. Surviving are his wife, Sue Binkley Hughes of the home; a daughter, Martha H. Zimmerman (Stuart) of Winston-Salem; two sons, Rodney A. Hughes (Dianne) of Clemmons, and John R. Hughes (Janie) of Bethlehem Pa.; a sister, Ruth Trogdon (Francis) of Winston-Salem; a brother, The Right Rev. James C. Hughes (Rita) of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Ashley and John Hughes of Clemmons, Erin and Garrett Zimmerman of Winston-Salem, Michael, Taylor, and Kyle Hughes of Bethlehem Pa. The funeral will be held Monday, March 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at New Philadelphia Moravian Church by Dr. Worth Green and the Rev. Christopher C. Thore. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. EAST BEND - Mrs. Mary Nell Hutchens, 60, of 6616 Old Hwy 421, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 9, 1941, in Georgia to Elisha and Lori Lee Maynard Jowers. Surviving are her husband, Wade Hutchens Sr. of the home; two daughters, Ruth (Rodney) Lazenby and Susan (Phil) Johnson, both of East Bend; a son, Wade (Kathy) Hutchens Jr. of East Bend; a brother, James Jowers of Zellwood Fla.; seven grandchildren, Amanda and R.J. Lazenby, Hannah, Hallie, and Hunter Grace Johnson, Neil and Rachel Nicole Hutchens. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Mark Elmore. Burial will follow in the Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Huff Funeral Home. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. William Lawing.

JARRELL-ANDERSON

Ms. Beverly Jarrell-Anderson, 41, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at home. She was born Jan. 24, 1961, to William E. and Beverly Perkins Jarrell. Ms. Jarrell-Anderson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was employed with Wachovia Bank and Trust for 20 years with the Forsyth County staff as a Roving Banker. Ms. Jarrell-Anderson was preceded in death by her father in February 2000. Surviving are her mother, Ms. Beverly Perkins Jarrell of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Linda Hopkins of Lebanon, Tenn., and Melody J. Allen (husband Paul H.) of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, W. Dayle Jarrell (wife Leslie) of Cary and Clay P. Jarrell (wife Erica) of Chestnut Mountain, Ga; three nieces, Danielle Hopkins, Amanda Hopkins and Hannah Allen; three nephews, Parker Allen, Graham Allen and Cole Jarrell. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. Gary Chapman and Rev. Francis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. LANSING - Aretia Jean Kilby, 80, died Friday at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson.

MARSHALL

LOWGAP - Miss Gaynell Marshall, 64, of 113 Gaynells Way, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit in Winston-Salem. Miss Marshall was born in Surry County on June 2, 1937, daughter of the late Walter Marshall and Lola Jarrell Marshall Collins. Miss Marshall was a retired saleslady with the Kronon-Lincoln-Mercury Co., Chicago, Ill., where she was recognized as salesperson of the month and year several times and was a member of the Million Dollar Sales Club for Ford Motor Co. At the time of her death, Miss Marshall was vice president of King International Inc., in King and was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Cubs, and was also an avid NASCAR Fan. Miss Marshall graduated from Pfeiffer College. She was well-loved by the whole community and was very helpful and kind to everyone. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Nadine Marshall French Rahmani and Seyed M. Rahmani, Columbia, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law; Verlon and Virginia Marshall of Mount Airy, and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Miss Marshall was preceded in death by four brothers, Elwood Marshall, Claude Marshall, Avon Marshall and Russell Marshall. The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy, conducted by the Rev. Lester Bryant and the Rev. Butch Holder, with burial to follow in the Ivy Green Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. MARTIN

GALAX, VA. - Cecil Lewis Martin, 74, known to family and friends as C.L., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. He was born on Dec. 25, 1927, in the Patterson Community of Wythe County. C.L. was the son of the late Orba Chester, "O.C." Martin and Norma Alverta McGrady Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille "Lucy" Hash Martin. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Louise Martin of Woodbridge, Va.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Millie and Bud Feuer and Lois and Ed Hastings of Roanoke, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Pat Martin of Galax, Va.; five grandchildren, Jessica McClanahan, Amanda Martin, Jason Martin, Nicolette Martin and Emiley Martin. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. C.L. worked along with his father and mother in establishing Martin's Flowers and Greenhouse as a premiere industry in Galax. During his horticulture career, he held membership in the Society of American Florists, the Ohio State Growers Association, and the Tri-State Flower Growers Association in which he held the office of president. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. by Dr. Thomas J. Whartenby. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Felts Memorial cemetery.

SUPPLY - Johnnie Baron Montgomery, 78, formerly of Germanton, died Saturday in Germanton. Mr. Montgomery was born March 15, 1924, in Stokes County to the late Isaiah M. Montgomery and Alice Wall Montgomery. He was retired from the construction business and was a member of Corinth Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by a child, Jackie Baron Montgomery, his twin brother, James Aaron Montgomery, other siblings, Hardin Coolidge Montgomery, Elizabeth M. Smith and Ola M. Smith. Survivors include his wife, Cleoma J. Montgomery of the home; sons, William James Montgomery and wife Sherry of Port Charlotte, Fla., Richard Aaron Montgomery and wife Peggy of Supply, Gary Dean Montgomery and wife Cindy of Germanton; stepson, Tony Jarvis of Winston-Salem; siblings, Raleigh Montgomery of Germanton, Maude M. Voss of Walnut Cove, Chester Montgomery of Germanton, Lorene M. Parks of Port Charlotte, Fla., Jo Venable and Essie M. Tedder, both of Germanton; grandchildren, Jonathan Montgomery, Matthew Montgomery, Stacie Scoggins, Cindy Fanrich and Wade Jarvis. ROANOKE, Va. - Mrs. Claudia Proax, the mother of Mrs Mittie Glymph and mother-in-law of Middie D. Glymph Jr., entered into eternal rest on Feb. 28, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Slate Hill Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the funeral service. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. William Eugene Smith, 76, of 920 S. Bunker Hill Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital. Mr. Smith was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Forsyth County a son of the late Marvin M. and Bessie Yokely Smith. He was co-owner and operator of the Horney Town Grocery for 55 years and co-owner and operator of the H&S Oil Co. for 47 years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Embler. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Opal Idol Smith of the home; a daughter, Kathy Dawn Smith and a son, Douglas Shane and wife Beverly Smith, all of Kernersville; two sisters, Merita Stancill of Winston-Salem and Donnie and her husband Jimmy Idol of High Point; a brother, Ronnie G. and his wife Mary Smith of Kernersville; brother-in-law, Jack Embler of West End; and a grandson, Jonathan Douglas Smith. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the Kernersville Church of Christ by the Rev. David Terriaco and Bobby Davis. Burial will follow in Bunker Hill cemetery. WILKESBORO - Larry Glenn Smithey, 49, of Moravian Falls, died Feb. 28, 2002, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born May 23, 1952, in Wilkes County to Glenn Smithey and Ethel Broyhill Smithey. Mr. Smithey was employed by RPS/FED X and was a graduate of Wilkes Central High School. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Hartley Smithey of the home; a son, Kris Smithey of Purlear; his parents of Moravian Falls; a sister, Mrs. Diane Edsel of Boomer and two granddaughters, Bailey Smithey and Abby Smithey, both of Purlear. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Paul Laws and the Rev. Harry Bizzell officiating. Burial was in Scenic Memorial Gardens. MOUNT AIRY - Clarence Coleman Tate, 78, of White Cloud Lane, the husband of the late Lydia Sechrist Tate, died Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Davis & Son Funeral Home Chapel.

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Ruth Anna Easter Tolbert, 77, the wife of Herbert Tolbert, passed away on Saturday. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Leonard Family cemetery. Moody Funeral Home is serving the Tolbert Family.

VANNOY

Mr. Charles Albert Vannoy, 82, died Friday morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after several months of illness. He was born in Wilkes County to Albert and Lilla Gilliam Vannoy on April 23, 1919. Mr. Vannoy served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. His training in electronics led to a long career in radio and television. He worked for WSJS radio and continued his career when station WXII was created, serving as an audio-video technician. He retired in 1982 after 40 years of service. Mr. Vannoy belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, American Legion Post 55, and was a member of the 319th Bomb Group. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Preceding him in death was his son, Timothy Charles Vannoy, in 2001. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Simmons Vannoy of the home; his daughter, LuAnn Vannoy of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Sarah G. Tidball of Springfield, Va., and Mabel V. Bruce of Herndon, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with Dr. David Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
