Eugene ‘Jack’ Cooke
Died Oct. 17, 2006
SHELBY — Mr. Eugene “Jack” Cooke, 76, of Shelby, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a highway construction engineer who retired back home. He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1953.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady Lee Cooke and Hattie Poole Cooke, and an infant brother, Danny R. Cooke.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Cooke of the home; a son, Ronald Cooke of Cumming, Ga.; a daughter, Brenda C. Shaw and husband, Robert, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; grandsons, Trenton and Blake Shaw; brothers and their wives, Delbert and Versey Cooke of Shelby, Ralph and Judy Cooke of Charlotte, Hal and Pat Cooke of Forest City and Flay and Janet Cooke of Fallston; and sisters and their husbands, Starlene C. and E.W. Brides of Kings Mountain, Joyce C. and Pervie Drum of Cherryville and Judy C. and Arthur Ledford of Lawndale; a sister, Shirley R. Cooke of Shelby; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews

SHELBY — Mrs. Hazel Elizabeth Blanton, 88, of 1410 E. Gaston St., Lincolnton, formerly of Shelby, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Lincoln Nursing Center in Lincolnton.
Born June 25, 1918, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Rosa Johnson. She attended Lenoir-Rhyne College and retired from Cleveland Lumber as a bookkeeper/office manager. She was also a former member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Blanton of the Lincoln Nursing Center; a sister, Joyce Woodson and husband, Harry, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Hazel Wallace of Mooresboro.

SHELBY — Mr. C. Thomas Jolley, 61, of Gaffney Road, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Rutherford County, a son of the late J.T. Jolley and E.Z. Lorine Bailey Jolley. He was a graduate of Crest High School and Cleveland Community College. He served in the Army and retired from Duke Energy after 40 years as maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 388. He was an Oasis Shriner and member of the Piedmont Shrine Club. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, May Ruth Scruggs Jolley.
He is survived by sons, Mark Jolley and wife, Tonia, of Mooresboro and Greg Jolley of Shelby; brothers, Joe Jolley of Columbia, S.C., and Steve Jolley of Cliffside; sisters, Linda Jolley Willis and husband, Bud, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; grandchildren, Kelsey Jolley, Kassidy Jolley and Kyle Jolley, all of Mooresboro; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.

John Tidwell

SHELBY — Mr. John T. Tidwell, 74, of 1554 Spangler Drive, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on March 18, 1932, in Greenville County, S.C., he was a son of Jewell Hanvey Tidwell of Greenville, S.C., and the late Emmett Elliott Tidwell. He served in the Air Force. He retired from Sunbeam in 2000 and worked part time at the Dental Arts Lab in Shelby. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church and a former member of the Elks and Lions clubs and Jaycees. He coached his son’s Little League ball teams and loved fishing and traveling with his family.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Donna Klinger Tidwell of the home; two sons, William “Bill” Tidwell and wife, Barbara, of Georgetown, S.C., and Chuck Tidwell and wife, Sandy, of Gastonia; two sisters, Marion T. Donley and husband, Paul, of Hagerstown, Md., and Yvonne T. Stroud of Greenville; six grandchildren, Lindy and John Tidwell of Georgetown and Christopher, Joshua and Michael Carle and Jacob Tidwell, all of Gastonia; and a great-grandchild, Connor Tidwell of Georgetown.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late James Landom and Geraldine McSwain Carson. He was formerly employed by PPG Industries.
He is survived by three sons, Frankie Carson Jr. and wife, Natasha, Christopher Alexander Carson and Benjamin Alexander Carson, all of Shelby; a daughter, Twanette Nance Davenport and husband, Donnie, of Shelby; a brother, James Carson Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Vernie Sue Becknell of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; one uncle, Ralph McSwain of Shelby; three aunts, Betty Sue Barnette of Atlanta, Annie Steele of Greensboro and Jennie Phillips of Shelby; and Jennie Nance, who cared for him.

Clyde Lee Williams
April 11, 1913 – Oct. 12, 2006
SHELBY — Mr. Clyde Lee Williams passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, while in Sarasota, Fla.
He was born in Lawndale in April 11, 1913. According to a newspaper account, he was one of the boys who stumbled on a small but famous treasure trove of Spanish coins while out squirrel hunting with friends in 1929. At Shelby High School, he excelled at football, baseball and basketball. He was also the president of his class.
Following graduation, he joined the North Carolina Army National Guard. He was mobilized with his unit on Sept. 16, 1940, serving as part of the Army 30th Infantry Division during World War II. In 1944 and 1945, he served in England, Holland and Germany as his unit’s first sergeant. He was subsequently promoted to second lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star.
After the war, he was an arborist with Wilson Tree Co. until retiring as vice president. He enjoyed golf and became a consummate volunteer in Shelby. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and the Piedmont Shrine Club. He helped organize and run the annual Crippled Children’s Golf Championship tournaments and was the hospital coordinator for the Shrine Hospitals in Greenville, S.C., and Cincinnati. He was Shriner of the Year in 1986 and president of the Shrine Club in 1987. In 1990, he received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from North Carolina Gov. Jim Martin. He was also a member of the Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir, lay person of the Year and past chairman of the board of trustees.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deloria G. Williams; his mother, Patsy Wallace Beam; his sister, Annie Laura Baker; and his brother-in-law, Miles L. Baker.
He is survived by his brother, Jerry Beam; his niece, Amanda B. Johnson; grand-nephews, Charles Johnson and Ted Johnson; and a grand-niece, Carrie Kale and her children, Katherine and Jacob.
