AUGUSTA, Ga. — Ms. Beverly Ann Jones, 59, formerly of Rutherford County, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in Hagerstown, Md., at her daughter’s home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Louise Martin “Sue” Byers, 79, formerly of 4127 James Lovelace Road, Boiling Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Century Care Nursing Home in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Cletus and Lydia Edwards Martin.
She was a member of Youngs Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Mooresboro and retired from Gardner-Webb University. When she was able, she enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, quilting and going to church. She was married 54 years to the late Bruce Byers who preceded her in death in August of last year.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Delois Byers; one son, Leroy Byers; a grandson, Travis Byers; son-in-law, Johnny Williams; and three brothers, Nelson, Weldon and Robert Charles Martin.
Left to cherish her memory are three sons, John Byers of Mooresboro, Thomas Byers of Spindale and Charlie Byers and wife, Regina, of Boiling Springs; one daughter, Hazel Williams of Boiling Springs; one brother, Clifford Martin and wife, Grace, of Boiling Springs; grandchildren, Aleta Robbins and husband, Mark , Farrion Byers, Kimberly Byers, Contina Wilson and husband, Rodney, Jonathan Elliot and wife, Crystal, Dewayne Byers and wife, Lakeshia, Christopher Byers and wife, Shonda, Crystal, Rodrick Sherika, Charlie Jr. and Montavis Byers; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Hazel Hicks of Shelby, Dorothy Martin of Boiling Springs, Julia Martin of Valdese, Alma Jean Surratt and husband, James, of Gaffney, S.C., and Eula and Beulah Mitchell of Boiling Springs; three aunts, Kathleen Roberts of Shelby, Annie Hamilton and Merllee Tucker, both of Columbia, S.C.; special “son,” Adrian Rice and wife, Lisa, of Mooresboro; special niece, Donna Martin of Lattimore; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at Green Bethel Baptist Church and other times at 2916 Lon St., Boiling Springs.

SHELBY — Mr. John Lee McCluney Sr., 84, of 394 Holmes St., departed this life Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, in Shelby.
He was born Oct. 19, 1922, in York County, S.C., to the late Gary and Reatha Boulware McCluney. He was a member of First Baptist Church, in Earl, where he served as the chairman of the Deacon Board and the church treasurer. He was also a thirty-second degree Mason and member of the Tryon Masonic Lodge No. 8, and grand treasurer of the Salem Grand Shriners Temple.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McCluney was preceded in death by a sister.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Mrs. Alice Wood McCluney; seven sons, Holland McCluney and wife, Ruth, of Newark, N.J., Joe Dean McCluney and wife, Faith, of Asheville, Bishop Thomas McCluney and wife, Margaret, John McCluney Jr. and wife, Dianne, Earnest McCluney and wife, Tropzie, Paul McCluney and wife, Marilyn and Donald McCluney and wife, Cynthia, all of Shelby; one daughter, Maxine Degree and husband, Stephen, of Shelby; one brother, James William Phillips of Cliffside; two stepsisters, Dorothy Lee Manning of New York and Dorothy Dee Duke of Detroit; 28 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great -grandchildren.

SHELBY — Mr. James Arthur Meeks, 61, of Pleasant Ridge Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007.
Born in Redding, Pa., he was a son of the late James Arthur Meeks and Ann Meeks. He served in the Air Force and was a retired mail carrier for the postal service in the state of Texas.
“He was the best father there ever was and without him, we wouldn’t be who we are today,” say James’ two daughters.
Mr. Meeks is survived by daughters, Melissa Meeks Taylor and husband, Brad, of Shelby and Victoria Meeks Sanders and husband, Bryan, of Shelby; brothers, Danny and Brendon Meeks; a sister, Vicky Burrows; grandchildren, Meadow Toms and Cameron “Little Pig” Sanders; family, Karen Ludford, Sabre Sutherland, Jay Meeks, Sharon McRae, Jana Martin, Alan Cody, Michael Carter, and Shirley Patterson; best buddies, Elvis and Molly; and soul mate and best friend, Linda Meeks Jones.
