Retired Command Sgt. James Calvin Pettit, 61, of 1433 Carnsmore Drive, Fayetteville, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home of Hope Mills.

Mrs. Mary O. Hurst (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

SOUTHERN PINES -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth O’Callaghan Hurst, 74, of Southern Pines died Monday in St. Joseph of the Pines East.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Hurst is survived by four sons, Albert D. Hurst Jr. of Wilmington, Jerry V. Hurst of Campbell, S.C., Richard “Ricky” Hurst of Derby and Charles “Chuck” Hurst of Raleigh; two daughters, Marie Lomax of Pinehurst and Barbara Hardy of Wintergreen, Va.; a brother, John O’Callaghan of Carthage; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Boles Funeral Home and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph of the Pines, 590 Central Drive, Southern Pines, N.C. 28387, or to FirstHealth Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, N.C. 28374.

Mrs. Mary Blackwell (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

SALEMTOWNE -- Mrs. Mary Lambeth “Polly” Blackwell, 81, of Salemtowne, formerly of Fayetteville, died Monday.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem by the Rev. David Hughes. Burial will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Vogler & Sons Reynolda Funeral Home.

Mrs. Blackwell is survived by her husband, Winfield Blackwell of Salemtowne; three daughters, Kate Blackwell of Washington, D.C., Ruth B. Rogers of Kerens, W.Va., and Mary B. Blackwell-Chapman of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charles F. Lambeth Sr. of Thomasville; a sister, Priscilla L. Keel of Rocky Mount; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Myrtle I. Murray (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

LAURINBURG -- Mrs. Myrtle Ingram Murray, 87, of 19481 Old Wire Road died Sunday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

She was a retired bookmobile operator for the Scotland County Library.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Douglass Key. Arrangements are being handled by McDougald Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mrs. Murray is survived by two sons, Braxton Murray of Laurinburg and Tom Murray of Pinehurst; a sister, Mary E. Ingram of Wagram; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, 15301 McFarland Road, Laurinburg, N.C. 28352.

Adolphus Campbell (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

BALTIMORE -- Adolphus Campbell, 73, of Baltimore, formerly of Marietta, N.C., died recently.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Ebenezer Baptist Church of Marietta by the Rev. John Campbell. Burial will be in Alligator Cemetery in Marietta. Arrangements are being handled by Community Funeral Home of Fairmont, N.C.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Jannie Campbell of Baltimore.

George T. Ford (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

George Thomas Ford, 6, of 7029 Cordoba Court, Fayetteville, died Sunday in Duke University Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by LaFayette Funeral Home.

Otis L. Harris (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

HOPE MILLS -- Otis Lee Harris, 67, of 3815 Sturbridge Drive died Monday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hope Mills Church of God by the Rev. Bobby Meyers. Burial will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Ella M. Harris; four daughters, June Morfi of Fayetteville, Anne Shipman of Lexington, Brenda Davis of Hope Mills and Alice Totherow of Fort Mill, S.C.; a son, Lee Harris of Raleigh; two sisters, Odessa Singletary of Bladenboro and Kathleen Arnette of Seaboard; a brother, David Harris of St. Pauls; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Reeves Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hagar Russ (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

COUNCIL -- Mrs. Hagar Russ, 81, of Council died Friday in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Mrs. Alease Spencer (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

EVERGREEN -- Mrs. Alease Spencer, 66, of Evergreen died Sunday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Mrs. Letha Canty, 54, of Brooklyn, formerly of Chadbourn, N.C., died recently.

Leon McNair (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

PHILADELPHIA -- Leon McNair, 41, of Philadelphia, formerly of Whiteville, N.C., died recently.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in True-Way Pentecostal Holiness Church by Bishop L.E. Best. Burial will be in Campground Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Mr. McNair is survived by a daughter, May Lee of Philadelphia; a son, Leon McNair Jr. of Philadelphia; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McNair of Whiteville; five sisters, Barbara Bacon and Annie Faison, both of Whiteville, Willie Mae Oatis of Japan, Brenda McNair of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Penny Jordan of Columbia, S.C.; and two brothers, Lester J. McNair of Boston Spa, N.Y., and Raymond D. McNair of Whiteville.

Jiles Fowler (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

RAEFORD -- Jiles Fowler of 5902 Turnpike Road died Monday in his home.

Charles L. Townsend (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

GARLAND -- Charles Linburg Townsend, 61, of 377 Townsend Road died Sunday in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Owens Cemetery by the Rev. Harold Boykin.

Mr. Townsend is survived by his wife, Gladys Townsend of the home; three daughters, Lina Jackson, Vivian Townsend and Diane Townsend, all of Garland; six sons, Jeffery Townsend, Charles L. Townsend, Johnnie R. Townsend, Bobby G. Townsend, Andreal A. Townsend and Jerome S. Townsend, all of Garland; three brothers, Coy Townsend of Garland, Sonny Townsend of New York and Bennie Townsend of Garland; three sisters, Bessie Owens, Lizzie Smith and Nellie Townsend, all of Garland; and 13 grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 6 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Ruth S. Gilbert (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

MAXTON -- Mrs. Ruth S. Gilbert, 87, of N.C. 130 died Saturday in Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Jackson Funeral Home in Laurinburg by the Rev. Robert A. Fairley. Burial will be Saturday in Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, Md.

Mrs. Gilbert is survived by a son, Raymond L. Gilbert of Bethesda, Md.; two sisters, Dorothy S. Shaw of Maxton and Margaret Hines of New York; three brothers, Andrew J. Smith of Louisville, Ky., Gilbert Smith of Spokane, Wash., and William B. Smith of Laurinburg; and one granddaughter.

Clifford Overby Sr. (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

Clifford Overby Sr., 79, of 4404 Blanton Road, Fayetteville, died Sunday in Autumn Care of Raeford nursing home.

Mr. Overby was a member of Campground United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Wesleyan fellowship class and the Golden Elite senior citizens. He was a retired heat and air conditioning contractor.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Campground United Methodist Church by the Revs. George Jones and N.B. Hill. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Mr. Overby is survived by his wife, Thelma B. Overby of the home; two sons, Richard R. Overby Jr. of Raleigh and Clifford Overby Jr. of Fayetteville; two daughters, Sandra Bailey and Hildred Crist, both of Fayetteville; a brother, G.W. Overby of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Campground United Methodist Church, 4625 Campground Road, Fayetteville, N.C.

Raymond McNeill (dated Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997)

Raymond McNeill of 2016 Hoke Loop Road, Fayetteville, died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today in New Bethel AME Zion Church by the Rev. George Campbell. Burial will be in the McNeill family cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by H.M. Colvin Funeral Home.

Mr. McNeill is survived by his wife, Classie McNeill of the home; a daughter, Connie McNeill of Four Oaks; his mother, Mittie McNeill of Fayetteville; four brothers, Winford P. McNeill, Alfred McNeill and Rashad Abdul-Fahmaan, all of Fayetteville, and Jarvis C. McNeill of Raeford; four sisters, Catherine Hampton of Fayetteville, Bertha Thomas of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jacqueline Vanner and Maggie Dixon, both of Fayetteville; and one grandson.

HAMLET -- Jeffrey Davis, 40, of Hamlet died Monday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

HAMLET -- John Raymond Roach, 48, of Hamlet died Monday in Hamlet Hospital.

PEMBROKE -- Foy Cummings, 89, of Route 1 died Monday in his home.
