LAURINBURG -- Bill Merritt, 75, of Century Care Center, formerly of Fairmont, died Wednesday.
He was a retired farmer.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Floyd Memorial Cemetery by the Rev. Alma Rabon.
Mr. Merritt is survived by two daughters, Christine Scott of Greenville, S.C., and Lavenia Blackwell of Fairmont; a son, Junior K. Merritt of Greenville; three stepdaughters, Emma Smith of Lumberton, Bernice Hayes of Fairmont and Eloise Kling of Orrum; two stepsons, Mack McQuage of Lumberton and Rod McQuage of Orrum; three sisters, Margaret Grimsley, Jane Grimsley and Bernice Hodge; two brothers, Daniel Merritt and Imore Merritt; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at Prevatte Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lavenia Blackwell and Eloise Kling.
Joseph H. Stallings (dated Friday, Nov. 21, 1997)
GARLAND -- Joseph Harold Stallings, 65, of 6250 W. Magnolia Lisbon Road died Thursday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Ms. Earlene O. Raeford (dated Friday, Nov. 21, 1997)
HOPE MILLS -- Ms. Earlene Ovella Raeford, 43, of 6391 Candaian Ave. died Tuesday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday in Gray’s Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. John Troy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. Raeford is survived by a daughter, Marchel Porchia of Fayetteville; a son, James Porchia of Fayetteville; three sisters, Gloria Henery and Cheryl Lewis, both of Los Angeles, and Frances Porchia of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; four brothers, Robert Love and Early Porchia, both of Mt. Clemens, Dennis Love of Los Angeles and Richard Porchia of Detroit; and her great-grandmother, Ovella Bankhead of Mt. Clemens.
The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary and at other times at the home of Marchel Porchia, 5165 Double Oak Drive, Fayetteville.
Miss Elsie M. Sharpe (dated Friday, Nov. 21, 1997)
Miss Elsie Malena Sharpe, 44, of 6203 Lynette Circle, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cliffdale Christian Center by the Rev. Emory Goodman. Burial will be in Northside Cemetery.
Miss Sharpe is survived by her parents, Malichi Sharpe and Evangelist Elease Carlyle, both of Fayetteville; a son, William D. Sharpe of Fayetteville; five sisters, Carolyn Miller of Fayetteville, Christine Parrish of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Cynthia Thompson of Orlando, Fla., Freda Huston of Hope Mills and Linda Marshall of Hickory, Tenn.; and one grandson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Wiseman Mortuary.
Mrs. Fannie M. Simmons (dated Friday, Nov. 21, 1997)
Mrs. Fannie M. Simmons, 77, of Fayetteville died Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lewis Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. John D. Fuller. Burial will be in Northside Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Wiseman Mortuary.
Mrs. Simmons is survived by four daughters, Elayne Bell of Memphis, and Mary A. Henderson, Alverta Jones and Gloria Vann, all of Fayetteville; two sons, Curtis Simmons and Earl Simmons Jr., both of Fayetteville; two sisters, Sally M. Williams and Darlene Fairley, both of Fayetteville; a brother, James E. Fairley of Fayetteville; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Melouise Reed Williams, 60, of 5604 Mesa Court, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg.

RAEFORD -- Jiles Fowler, 82, of 5092 Turnpike Road died Monday in his home.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Buie Funeral Home chapel by Elder Kenneth Marthell Sr. Burial will be in Silver Grove Community Cemetery.
Mr. Fowler is survived by a son, Terrence Fowler of Belleville, Mich.; a brother, James Fowler Jr. of Chicago; and two grandsons.

Mrs. Helen B. Britt (dated Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997)
LAUREL HILL -- Mrs. Helen Bierman Britt, 71, of Springs Mill Road died Thursday in Florence, S.C.
She was retired from Abbott Laboratories and a was member of Springfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Springfield Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. J.B. Loving. Burial will be in Scotland Cemetery.
Mrs. Britt is survived by a son, James E. Britt Jr. of Laurel Hill; two sisters, Jeanette Donelli and Mayrella Vanmeter, both of St. Louis; and one granddaughter.

CLARKTON -- Mrs. Annie Ruth Hardgraves, 72, of 437 S. Railroad St., died Thursday in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Clarkton Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Thompson. Burial will be in Clarkton Cemetery.
Mrs. Hardgraves is survived by her husband, Felix Hardgraves; five daughters, Debbie Bass of Elizabethtown, Ann Marlowe of Clarkton, Karen Stanley and Lane Bartley, both of Whiteville, and Jane Ammons of Fair Bluff; two sons, Ted Hardgraves of Clarkton and John Hardgraves of Whiteville; three sisters, Katherine Berry of Clarkton, Johnnie Owens of Millersville, Md., and Edna Cunningham of Crandall, Texas; a brother, Lennon Edwards of Morehead City; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Agnes M. Smith of 707 Rodie Ave., died Wednesday in Columbia Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Harold A. Smith of the home; three daughters, Faith A. Jones of Hanover, Mass., Cynthia A. Clifton of Fayetteville and Sheila M. Graziano of Spangdahlen, Germany; three sons, Christopher A. Smith of Franklin, Harold E. Smith of Asheboro and Charles R. Smith of Cambridge, Ohio; a sister, Muriel Rysinski of Cos Cob, Conn.; three brothers, Raymond Considine, John Considine and Patrick Considine, all of Stamford, Conn.; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, William E. Moore of Fayetteville.

William G. Matthews (dated Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997)
DUNN -- William Gattis Matthews, 55, of 1017 Culbreth Drive died Wednesday in Wake County Medical Center in Raleigh.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Dafford Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. G.D. McNeil Jr. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews is survived by his mother, Ethel Matthews of Dunn; and three sisters, Janie English of Philadelphia, Doris Olds of Dunn and Jeanette Butler of Roseboro.
The public will be received today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m.

John R. Roach (dated Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997)
HAMLET -- John Ramon Roach of 209 Kent St.. died Monday.
He was retired from the Army.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in St. Peter United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Robinson. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery in Rockingham. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Service of Rockingham.
Mr. Roach is survived by his wife, Peggy B. Roach of the home; a son, Chester Roach of Camp Lejeune; a daughter, Kimberly Roach of Lawton, Okla.; three stepchildren, Tanette Villines of Raleigh, and Michelle Brown and Nigel Brown, both of Hamlet; his parents, John H. and Betty Roach of Rockingham; four sisters, Dianne McGrady, Sheba Maultsby and Mae Roach, all of Rockingham, and Janet Roach of Charlotte; and a brother, Stacy Roach of Rockingham.

Ms. Pauline Turlington (dated Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997)
DUNN -- Ms. Pauline Tyndall Turlington, 90, of Charles Parrish Nursing Home, formerly of Lillington, died Friday at the nursing home.
She was a retired seamstress for Campbell University.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Price Funeral Home chapel in Erwin by the Rev. Ron Byrd. Burial will be in Prospect Church cemetery.
Ms. Turlington is survived by a son, Phillip B. Turlington of Erwin; two daughters, Sylvia Stancil of Lillington and Kay T. Darroch of Erwin; three sisters, Mozelle Faircloth and Margie Hairr, both of Erwin, and Bonnie Broadwell of Knightdale; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
