Jean C. Newsome Honeycutt

Elizabeth City, NC - Jean C. Newsome Honeycutt, 66, of 786 Dryridge Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Salisbury, NC, the daughter of the late Irving Ingle and Louise Wright Newsome and was the wife of Fred W. Honeycutt of the home. She was a civil service worker with the United States Coast Guard in the Procurement and Provisioning Services, a member of the Trinity Baptist Fellowship, and a member of the C. P. O. A. Auxillary.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Honeycutt is survived by two daughters, Deana Honeycutt and Donna H. Creasy both of Elizabeth City; one son, Christopher W. Honeycutt of Elizabeth City; one brother, Bobby Newsome of Albemarle, NC; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church by the Rev. David Mansingh and the Rev. Michael Jordan. Entombment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Alice Barone

Alice Lucille Smith Barone, age 77 of 407 Lane Dr., Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, January 01, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Jim Thorpe, PA; daughter of the late Irvin Smith, Jr. and the late Catherine Hallier Evans and was the wife of Joseph Barone of the residence. She was a retired Registered Nurse, a graduate of Philadelphia General Hospital in 1946, a former director of Nurses at Cobbs Creek Nursing Center in Philadelphia, PA; Pennsylvania Prospect Park Nursing Home, Prospect Park, PA; Kearney Nursing Home, Sharon Hill, PA; and former Charge Nurse at Connor Williams Nursing Home in Ridley Park, PA.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Barone is survived by a daughter, Janice Dandar of Elizabeth City, NC and two grandchildren, Alicia Dandar of Charlotte, NC and Justin Dandar of Elizabeth City, NC. She was preceded in death by a brother, Irvin Smith, III.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, January 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Holy Family Catholic Church by Father James Buchhloz and Pastor Daniel D. Reinheimer. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Effie Mae Hooker
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Effie Mae Hooker, age 86, of 104 Bell Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, February 22, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Mordecai Morris and Ollie Jackson White and was the widow of Julius A. Hooker, Sr.. She was a member of T.O.P.S.

Mrs. Hooker is survived by two sons, Julius A. Hooker, Jr. and Melvin C. Hooker, Sr. and wife Helen; three grandsons, Melvin C. Hooker, Jr. and wife Cathy, Monte B. Hooker and wife Ann, and Michael Hooker and wife Vanessa; two granddaughters, Donna Grigsby and Julie Hooker; four great grandchildren, Thomas Hooker, Justin Hooker, Shane Grigsby, and Byran Swain; a brother, Charles T. White and wife Doris; a sister, Erma L. Bush, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, George White, Bailey White, Alphonso White, and Cornelius White, and two sisters, Mattie Dickerson and Annie Wright.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at 11:00 am in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Poole officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin C. Hooker, Sr., 117 Pineview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 1035 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 and a charity of one’s choice. Johnnie Cecil Hooker
Native of Elizabeth City, NC

Johnnie Cecil Hooker, age 80, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC, and Brian Center Nursing Home of Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was a retired cook for S.C. Loveland Company, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Hooker was the son of the late Johnnie E. Hooker and Bessie White Hooker.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandra H. Bascombe of Chesapeake, VA; one son Gary Stephen Hooker, Sr. of West Palm Beach, FL; and his companion, Pauline Cuthrell of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Caleb Hooker and Pete Hooker both of Elizabeth City, NC; ten grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Jeffrey C. Hooker, and two grandsons Jeffrey Cecil Hooker and Joey Dail Hooker.

A memorial service will be Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at the funeral home. Daily Hooper

Elizabeth City, NC - Daily Ebbie Hooper, age 80, of 219 Simpson Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. He was born in Dare County, NC, son of the late Ebenezer and Marie O’Neal Hooper, and was the husband of Emma Mae Snow Hooper of the residence. Mr. Hooper was a retired First Class Engineerman with the U.S. Coast Guard, and was a Veteran of WW II. He also worked at Harvey Point Special Testing Activity, and was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Imogene Tatum and husband, “Chubby” of Elizabeth City, NC, and Denise Lamm and husband, Sandy of Wilson, NC; one sister, Anna Midgett and husband, I.D. of Waves, NC, two brothers, Isaac Hooper and wife, Faye of Coinjock, NC, and Ebbie K. Hooper and wife, Velnia of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren, Heather Hammack and husband Kent, Lance Downing, Kelli Robeson and husband Max, Wesley Tatum, Harry, Alex, Jonathan, and Courtney Lamm; four great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be Saturday, July 19, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Military Honors will be by William Clarence Jackson Post 6060. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service, and at other times at the residence on 219 Simpson Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Hazel Hooper

Hazel Mayes Hooper, 86, died at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit in Winston-Salem, N. C. on Monday, November 24. A longtime resident of Elizabeth City she moved to Winston-Salem following the death of her husband four years ago, living first with her daughter, then at Brighton Gardens for approximately 3 years and more recently at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit following a stroke. She was born on December 27, 1916 in Norfolk County, Virginia to the late Edward Wallis Mayes and Estelle Jarratt Mayes. She spent her early years in Hertford, N.C. Following graduation from Perquimans High School she attended Mrs. Johnson’s School of Shorthand in Norfolk, VA, and then was employed as a secretary to Mr. J.C. Blanchard, proprietor of Blanchard’s in Hertford. There she met her future husband, “Mickey” when he made his rounds as a salesman. After their marriage they moved to Elizabeth City where she eventually became a partner in J.A. “Mickey” Hooper Company, a fishing tackle, office supply and paper products business serving Northeastern North Carolina and the Outer Banks.

While working in the business she found time to raise three daughters and be an involved grandmother when needed. Mrs. Hooper was a faithful member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church where she served in numerous capacities including Primary Sunday School Superintendent, Baptist Women’s President, and as a member of the bell choir for over 20 years. In her retirement she taught in the Adult Literacy Program and was active in Meals on Wheels. She was a published poet who was awarded the N.C. Federation of Women’s Club Albert C. Berry Cup for Best Narrative Poem in 1947. She studied at Elizabeth City State University and was an active member in the North Carolina Poetry Society serving as the honorary chairman of the Spring Poetry Symposium at the College of the Albemarle in 1999. She enjoyed spending time at the family beach home on the Outer Banks.

Preceding her in death are her husband of 59 years, Julian A. “Mickey” Hooper, and three sisters, Kathleen Bass, Edna Mayes and Wally Jarvis. Survivors include three daughters: Nancy Hooper Gwyn and husband Paul of Winston-Salem, NC, Jane Hooper Sprague and husband David of Blacksburg, VA, and Alice Hooper Moore Collins of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.; five grandchildren: Ted Moore and wife Julie of Jacksonville, FL, Tom Moore of Kill Devil Hills, NC, David Gwyn and wife Lisa of Raleigh, NC, Kelly Gwyn Diamond and husband Jeff of Bethesda, MD, and Marya Gwyn Upchurch and husband Charles of Charlotte, NC; and seven great-grandchildren: Christopher and Haley Moore, Aydlett and David Gwyn, Jr., Evan and Brian Diamond, and Harris Upchurch; a sister Margaret Mayes Holt and husband Leslie of Mobjack, VA, a brother Edward Wallis Mayes, Jr. and wife Ann of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29 at Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City with the Reverend Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service. Leslie Hooper

Salvo, NC - Captain Leslie Moore Hooper, 76, of 27204 Shell Road, Salvo, NC, died Saturday, December 20, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Salvo, NC to the late Garland and Maria Hooper and was the husband of Elsie Hooper of the residence. He was retired from the N.C.D.O.T. having served as a ferry boat captain for 33 years, was a member of the Salvo Assembly of God, a founding member of the Salvo Volunteer Fire Department, a volunteer driver for Dare County, and a member of the Friends of the Elizabeth II.

Besides his wife, Mr. Hooper is survived by two daughters, Sharon Hooper Tillett and husband Hoyt of Wanchese, NC and Bertie Kay Midgett and husband I.D., Jr. of Waves, NC; one son, Jimmie Hooper and wife Jenny of Salvo, NC; two brothers, Edward Hooper and William Hooper both of Salvo, NC; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Salvo Assembly of God by the Revs. Dwight Burrus, Ronnie Midgett, and Susan Slater. Burial will follow at the family cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM and at other times at the residence. Alan Hooper

Springfield, VA - Alan McBride Hooper, age 74, of 6133 Roxbury Avenue, Springfield, VA, died Thursday, September 16, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was son of the late Arthur M. Hooper and Annie Patrick Hooper. He was the husband of Ina Ruth Moore Hooper of the residence. He was a retired auditor with US Government. He was a graduate of Elizabeth City High School, and in 1959 he graduated from East Carolina University.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jennifer E. Hooper of Springfield, VA; three sons, Arthur McBride Hooper and his wife Gayle of Springfield, VA, Robert Alan Hooper of Springfield, VA, and Jeremy C. Hooper of Tampa, FL; one granddaughter, Aubrey Hooper and one grandson, Jordan Hooper.

A funeral service will be Monday, September 20, 2004, at 10:30 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor Dustin Sprouse officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to The Epilepsy Foundation of NC, Medical Blvd. Winston Salem, NC 27157-1078. Elroy Hooper

KITTY HAWK, N.C. - ELROY JONES HOOPER, JR, 82, of Kitty Hawk, died Monday, August 16, 2004, in Nags Head. Mr. Hooper was born in Elizabeth City and owned Hooper Tile Company for 40 years. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and Eureka Masonic Lodge #317 AF&AM; and was a Shriner. Mr. Hooper served his country honorably during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp 13th Air Service Group as a Captain and was First Post Commander of VFW Post # 6060 Elizabeth City.

Mr. Hooper was the son of the late Elroy and Nancy Meekins Hooper, Sr and the husband of Wanda Miller Hooper.

Besides his wife surviving are one daughter; Carol Hooper Gaither of Wilmington, N.C., two sons; Thomas Maynard Hooper of Issaquah, Washington and Timothy Franklin Hooper of Kitty Hawk, one sister; Etta Hooper Parrott of Kitty Hawk and three grandchildren; Charles Thomas Hooper, Timothy Franklin Hooper, Jr and Kathryn Elizabeth Gaither. Mr. Hooper was preceded in death by a son; Elroy Jones Hooper, III and a sister; Faye Hooper Jones.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, August 19, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. in West Lawn Cemetery by The Rev. Ricki Steenstra. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Benjamin House: P.O. Box 757, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27907. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Hooper Family.

Josefina Maldonado Hernandez
Resident of Winfall, NC

Josefina Maldonado Hernandez, age 57, of 516 Main Street, Winfall, NC, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Dilley, TX, daughter of the late Pablo Maldonado and Tomasa Rodriguez Maldonado. She was the wife of Victor M. Hernandez, Sr.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Cindy Solano of Big Springs, TX, and Melissa Hernandez of Seattle, WA; three sons, Victor M. Hernandez, Jr. and Frederick Hernandez, both of Big Springs, TX, Michael Hernandez of Dallas, TX; five sisters, Englentina Maldonado, Gloria Maldonado, Esmeralda Herrera, Estela Martinez, and Paula Hernandez; five brothers, Noe Maldonado, Hector Maldonado, Elio Maldonado, Efrain Maldonado, and Alejandro Maldonado. Mr. Hernandez was deceased by a son, Delmar Hernandez.

A funeral service will be at a later date in Pearsall, TX. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements.

BARBARA L. HENRY

CHESAPEAKE – Barbara L. Henry, 68, passed away April 28, 2004. She was taken from this earth on Wednesday morning to be with those who needed her at this time. She was the former wife of Norman Henry, the proud mother of Sean (Laura), Brian (Yumiko), Ronald (Carrie) and Kelly Henry. She was the loving grandmother to Nicole, Sara, Kyle, Brandon, Joseph, and Anna. Her love of life, sharp wit, sense of humor and time spent with her children and grandchildren will be greatly missed. During her times of trial and suffering, she was never alone. She was always in the thoughts and prayers of those who loved her unconditionally. The family will receive family and friends for remembrance 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. In Chesapeake.

Sawyer Helen Hill

Helen Hill Sawyer, age 83 of Winslow Memorial Nursing Home, died Thursday, January 23, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Grover E. and Mattie Davenport Hill, and the widow of Cliff Sawyer, Jr. Mrs. Sawyer had worked with Real Estate Rentals and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She is survived by two nephews James and William (Bill) Furtwangler both of California, a cousin Laura Lee Riddick of Elizabeth City NC. Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by a sister Mary Elizabeth Hill Furtwangler.

No services are planned at this time.

Ruth Heck

Nags Head - Ruth Kreiger Heck, 87, died on Monday, July 12, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home. Mrs. Heck was born in Tioga, PA and was a homemaker. She was a protestant and a member of the Eastern Star in PA. Mrs. Heck was the daughter of the late Frederick Kreiger and the late Rena McCann Kreiger and the widow of James Arlington Heck.

She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Treat and husband Thomas of Tioga, PA and Arlene Randall and husband Wayne of Kill Devil Hills; four grandchildren, James Treat and wife Kim of Fayetteville, GA, Edward Treat and wife Sue of Cyclone, PA, Douglas Hughes and wife Heather of Florida, and Aimee Demasi and husband Peter of Florida; seven great-grandchildren, Allyson James, Thomas James, Kate Treat, Emily Treat, Adian Hughes and Gabriel Demasi, and Meagan Demasi; 10 nieces and one nephew.one sister-in-law, Freda Weller of Blossburg, PA; she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Irvin and Jean Paris;

A Celebration of Life will be held at Wilston Funeral Home in Mansfield, PA on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Bishop Vanderheil officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Tioga, PA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

VONCEIL SMITH HEAD
Native of Georgia

Mrs. Vonceil Smith Head, 63, of 1034 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC, beloved wife of Dr. Roy L. Head, Pastor of Corinth Baptist Church of Elizabeth City, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 26, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Jeffersonville, GA to the late Rev. David Maurice Smith, Sr. and Ruthy Mae Worthington Smith. Mrs. Head was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church, and a former piano teacher and church pianist.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Roy L. Head, pastor of the Corinth Baptist Church, three sons, Kevin Head and his wife Amy of Lumberton, NC, Derek Head and his wife Melissa of Louisville, KY, and David Head and his wife Lynda of Aiken, SC; five grandchildren, Jenna, Avery, Joshua, Evalyn and Donavon; one brother, David Maurice Smith, and his wife Faye of Aiken, SC; two sisters Ruthy Mae Stevens and her husband Bill of Tulsa, OK, and Carey Will and her husband Owen of Aiken, SC. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha.

A visition will be Tuesday evening, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Corinth Baptist Church and funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at 11:00 AM also at Corinth Baptist Church. Additional services will be held at First Baptist Church, Belvelere, SC on Friday at 11:00 AM.

ANGELINE MORRISTTE HAYMAN
NATIVE OF BELL’S ISLAND

Angeline Morrisette Hayman, 93 of 4494 Caratoke Highway, Coinjock, NC died Monday evening in the Sentara Nursing Center at Barco, NC. She was born in Bell’s Island, Currituck County, NC to the late Henry Eugene and Lydia Ann Ballance Morrisette and the widow of the late James Iridell Hayman. She was a member of the Coinjock Baptist Church, W.M.U., a 50-year member of the Homemaker’s Extension Club and a former member of the Albemarle Craftsman’s Guild, Currituck Historical Society, and a 1930 graduate of ECTC.

She is survived by two daughters, Joan H. Dunton of Coinjock, NC and Eugene H. Gentry of Montgomery Village, MD.; a son, Frank Kenyon Hayman of N. Wilkesboro, NC; a sister, Effie M. Sawyer of Virginia Beach, VA, nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son James Louis Hayman and two brothers, Henry Lynn Morrisette and Armstead B. Morrisette.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 6, 2003, in the Coinjock Baptist Church at 2:00pm by Rev. Charles H. Wellons. Burial will follow in the Snowden Cemetery. The family suggest memorial gifts in lieu of flowers be made to the Coinjock Baptist Church, 193 Worth Guard Road, Coinjock, NC 27923. The family will be at the residence of Travis and Jo Ann Morris, 3662 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Thomas F. Hayes

Elizabeth City, NC - Thomas F. Hayes, age 73, of 105 Hunters Trail W., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Highland Park, NJ; son of the late Edmund A. and Jane Dunigan Hayes and was the husband of Betty Hayes of the residence.

Mr. Hayes was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the 4th degree Knights of Columbus. He was a retired engineer and a veteran, having served in the U. S. Air Force.

Besides his wife, Mr. Hayes is survived by a daughter, Kathleen H. Day of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Timothy J. Hayes of Suffolk, VA; two sisters, Mary Hayes Griggs of North Fort Myers, FL and Joanne Hayes-Rines of Boston, MA; a brother, Arthur Hayes of Gunnison, CO; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted on Monday, July 28, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Jim Buchholz officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Family Cremation Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The G.R.E.A.T. Fund, C/O Rines, 65 East India Row # 24E, Boston, MA 02110. The family will be at the residence.

William Samuel Hauser

Southern Shores, NC - William Samuel Hauser, 76, died at an Outer Banks medical facility on Saturday, January 24, 2004. Mr. Hauser was born in Barbourville, KY, lived on the Outer Banks since 1978 and was a retired Investigator with the F.B.I. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hauser was the son of the late Gustav Adolf Hauser and the late Mary Herzig Hauser and the husband of the late Virginia Woodson Hauser.

Mr. Hauser is survived by four sons, Bill Hauser of Ashburn, VA, Gus Hauser of Chattanooga, TN, Lewis Hauser of Springfield, VA and Clay Hauser of Kitty Hawk; two sisters, Louise Dizney of Jacksonville, NC and Betty Sanslow of Knoxville, TN and eight grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 10:00 AM at the All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Thomas E. Wilson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Annie Deeds Hassell

Annie Deeds Hassell, age 75, of Grandy, NC, died April 29, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Lumberton, NC, daughter of the late Coolidge Deeds and Annie Marie Cummings Lowery, and was the wife of the late Floyd R. Hassell. She was a retired waitress and a member of Grandy Assembly of God Church.

Mrs. Hassell is survived by four daughters, Fay and Bill Hall of Wilmington, NC, Shirley and Jonathan Crank of Harbinger, NC, Helen and Joe Dieck of Poplar Branch, NC, Eva and Mike Bilderback of Macon, GA; two sons Jimmy Hassell of Grandy, NC and Jerry Jacobs of Fairmont, NC; two sisters, Lois Ann Haggins and Linda Jones both of Lumberton, NC one brother Linwood Cummings of Fayetteville, NC; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be Saturday May 3, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence and immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home.

Hazel Jennings Hartzog

Elizabeth City, NC - Hazel Jennings Bunch Hartzog, 91, of Carolina House, Elizabeth City, NC died in the Albemarle Hospital Tuesday night, March 4, 2003, after a short illness. She was born in Elizabeth City; daughter of the late Frank and Allie Boyce Jennings. She was the widow of Herman B. Hartzog, and was preceded in death by her first husband, William M. Bunch, and a sister Allie Mae Jennings Wilson.

A lifelong member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, Hazel taught Sunday School for many years, and was a member of the Joy Club. She was also very active in her community, having served as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, president of the Senior Citizens, and a member of the Degree of Pocahontas, the Friendship Club, and the Fleet Reserve. She was a volunteer for many organizations, including Albemarle Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and COA Leaning Lab.

Hazel was a beloved mother and is survived by her children, Patricia Bunch Houtz and husband, Heywood, of Elizabeth City, NC, William Melvin Bunch, Jr. and wife, Connie, of Rutherfordton, NC, and Deborah Boyce Bragg and husband, Andrew, of Edenton, NC; one sister, Margaret Ann Wergley of Alexandria, VA; five grandchildren, Kathy Houtz, Jenny Houtz Fralin, Kelly Bunch Cannon, Rachel Boyce and Will Bunch, and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, N. Road St., Elizabeth City, with Rev. Dr. Robert Crisp officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church and at other times at the residence of Patsy and Heywood Houtz, 1541 Clubhouse Rd., Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, 700 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC
