Native of Camden County, NC

Joyce Perkins Favinger, 58, of 786 Highway #158, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Camden County to the late William and Virginia Stone Perkins. Mrs. Favinger was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Sherry C. Temple and husband, Tracy, of Elizabeth City; a son, Kenny Favinger and wife, Tracy of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Linda Byrum and husband, Billy, of Sunbury, NC; two grandchildren Tracy Wayne Temple and Justin Temple both of Elizabeth City, NC.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, February 14, 2003, at 11:00am in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Rev. Toni Wood. The family will be at the residence, 786 Highway #158, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Nerene M. Eves

Nerene Markham Eves, 85, of 1625 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, March 31, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County to the late Joseph C. and Katie Cartwright Markham and was the widow of the late Willie J. Eves. She was a member of the Weeksville Lions Club Auxiliary, Marcia Albertson Community Club and the Salem Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Carolyn Miller, Virginia Beach, VA, a brother, Eugene Markham of Elizabeth City, and a granddaughter, Carole B. Williams of Lake Gaston, VA. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Martin and Hilda Fitchett.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at 2:00pm in the New Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Bill Otis. The family will receive friends and relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Markham, 1143 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Reggie Ballance

Ocracoke, NC - Reginald “Reggie” Ballance, 56, died Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Nags Head. Mr. Ballance was born in New Bern, NC and lived most of his life on Ocracoke Island. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church and served many years on the polls for the Hyde County Board of Elections and was retired from the National Park Service Maintenance Department. Mr. Ballance was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Elisha Everett Ballance and the late Mildred Amber Hardison Ballance.

He is survived by one sister, Lynette Waller and husband Ray Thomas of Ocracoke; one brother, Gene Ballance and wife, Cheryl of Ocracoke; a sister-in-law, Sharon Ballance of Ocracoke; he was preceded in death by a brother, David Ballance.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 28th, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Joyce Reynolds officiating. Burial will take place in the Ballance Family Cemetery in Ocracoke. A Visitation will be held at the church Monday, September 27th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Reggie Ballance Memorial Fund for Prostate Cancer Screening, C/O East Carolina Bank, P.O. Box 458, Ocracoke, NC 27960.

ALMA AUSTIN EVERETT
Native of Currituck Co., NC

Alma Austin Everett, 83, of 5978 Caratoke Highway, Poplar Branch died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, in the Outer Banks Hospital. She was born in Currituck County to the late Pell and Lela Hayman Austin. She was a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church.

Mrs. Everett is survived by her daughter, Zella Ann Brown and husband, Steve, of Poplar Branch, NC; two sisters, Louise Austin of Poplar Branch and Grace A. Meade of Virginia Beach, VA; four brothers, Milfred Austin of Poplar Branch, Warren Austin of Barco, Harry Austin of Shiloh and Gene Austin of Elizabeth City; two grandchildren, Trina Umphlett and S. Dale Brown, Jr.; four great grandchildren, Steven Anthony Brown, Christopher Robert Brown, LeAnna Renee Brown and Ayden Dale Brown.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 11, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Brown, 5978 Caratoke Highway, Poplar Branch, NC. There will be a visitation at the funeral home, Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Susan Evans
Native of Norfolk, VA

Susan Marie Nistelbeck Evans, age 54, of 216 Worth Guard Road, Coinjock, NC, died Monday, October 4, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Evans, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the daughter of the late Jack Nistelbeck and Betty Lou Weaver Moore. She was the wife of Michael Wayne Evans of the residence and the step-daughter of Marvin Odell Moore of Moyock, NC. She was a homemaker and a Christian.

Besides her husband and step-father she is survived by two daughters; Carla Lynne Mefford of Moyock, NC, and Sheryl Marie Pope of Coinjock, NC; two sons, Ronald Ray Robinson of Louisville, KY, and John Wayne Robinson of Delmar, DE; a brother, John Lewis Moore of Moyock, NC; and thirteen grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Thursday, October 7, 2004, at 1:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jim Clark officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at her daughter’s residence, Mr. & Mrs. James and Carla Mefford, 108 Willow Drive, Moyock, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Robert Evans

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. - ROBERT LEE EVANS, 70, of Kill Devil Hills, died, Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Evans was born in Syracuse, N.Y. and was a retired account executive with 3 M Corporation after 32 years. He was a graduate of Syracuse University where he received his Master’s Degree in Music. He was a Veteran having served his country honorably in the U.S. Army where he sang in the Army Field Band Chorus. Mr. Evans also toured with Radio City Music Hall in New York and also sang with the Ray Charles Singers on the Perry Como Show from 1957 to 1961. He was also a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church.

Mr. Evans was the son of the late Lee and Ethel Randall Evans and the husband for 19 years to Jean Carder Evans of Kill Devil Hills.

Besides his wife, survivors include one daughter, Chris Fisher and husband Allen, of Fredericksburg, VA; one son, Rob Evans and wife Maureen, of Burlington, VT; two step-daughters, Sheri Kelly of Kill Devil Hills and Gina Rhodes and husband Dave, of Cheboygan, MI and 11 grandchildren; Bob is also survived by his former wife of 27 years, Jennie Evans of Bowie, MD

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Richard Stone officiating. Memorial Donations may be made to the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, designated for Bob Evans Music Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 900, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Ethel Eure

Hertford, NC - Ethel Cartwright Eure, 75, of 1401 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC died Wednesday, October 08, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late John Anderson and Margaret Elle Lowry Cartwright and was the widow of Melvin Russell Eure, Sr. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Eure is survived by a daughter, Eden E. Honeycutt of Ocracoke, NC; a son, Melvin Russell Eure, Jr. of Hertford, NC; and two grandchildren, Melvin Russell Eure, III and Rachel Eure.

No services are planned at this time.

Mary Elizabeth "Ms. Betty" Etheridge

Wanchese, NC - Mary Elizabeth McDonnell “Miss Betty” Etheridge, 82, of Wanchese died on August 31, 2004 at a Norfolk, Virginia hospital. Miss Betty was born in Easton, MD and was an owner/officer of the Willie R. Etheridge Seafood Company. She was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and a patron of many charitable organizations. Miss Betty was the daughter of the late Jeremiah James McDonnell and the late Ada Irene White McDonnell and the wife of Willie Roswell Etheridge, Jr. of the home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Irene Etheridge Kampanis of Wanchese, Susan Etheridge of Wanchese and Bonnie Etheridge Arndt of Lakeland, FL; one son, Willie R. Etheridge, III of Wanchese; fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Jane Short.

Miss Betty was aunt and mother to Mark Vrablic and Frank Vrablic both of Wanchese, Rosalie Payne of Currituck and Luke Short of Maryland. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Maude Daniels and her 15 children.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Saturday, September 4, 2004 at 11:00 am, with Dr. Jane Desmond, Rev. David Daniels, Dr. David Dalton and Rev. Mark Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Cudworth Cemetery, Wanchese. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 3, 2004 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence at 3892 Mill Landing Road, Wanchese.

ROBERT WILLIAM (BOB) ESTUS

Robert William (Bob) Estus passed away at 5:50 a.m. on February 22, 2004 in The Winslow Memorial Home in Elizabeth City, NC at the age of 88 years.

Robert is survived by his wife of 67 years Isabell Shenefiel Estus residing in the Carolina Living Retirement Home in Elizabeth City, NC and four children Carl Robert Estus of Elizabeth City, NC, William Paul Estus of Ridgway, PA; Oscar James Estus of Moyock, NC, and Arthur Aaron Estus of Falconer, NY.

Robert and Isabell have 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Robert was born in Mayville, NY June 19, 1915 and lived most of his life in Celoron, NY. Robert is a graduate of the Celoron High School. Robert and Isabell moved to northeastern North Carolina in the early 1980’s after his retirement.

Anne Embrey

Nags Head - Anne Adair Embrey, 64, died suddenly at home Friday afternoon in her sleep. Mrs. Embrey, born in Cleveland, Oh, retired in 1996 as a kindergarten teacher in Churchill Rd. School in McLean, VA and moved to the Outer Banks. She was the daughter of the late William Hassink, Jr. and the late Eleanor Bissett Hassink and the wife of George A. Embrey, a newspaperman retired from The Columbus Dispatch and Dare County Republican chairman.

Mrs. Embrey was active in St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She attended weekly Bible study and helped with reading books to St. Andrew’s Day School children. An avid bowler, Mrs. Embrey helped represent Dare county at this year’s Senior Games in Raleigh. A graduate of Oakwood, Ohio, High School, Marymount College in Arlington, VA, Mrs. Embrey also attended Miami University of Ohio and the Ohio State University.

Besides her husband of 43 years, Mrs. Embrey is survived by her sons, Ralph A. Embrey and his wife Alicia of Raleigh, Scott A. Embrey and his wife Pamela of Richmond, VA and Robert W. Embrey of Ashburn, VA; daughter, Anne E. Embrey of Greensboro, NC; grandsons, Andrew Wray Stoehr of Savannah, GA; Ethan G. Embrey of Raleigh, and William Robert of Greensboro; granddaughters, Peyton Elizabeth and Devin Grace of Richmond, and Catherine Adair of Raleigh. Other survivors include sisters, Barbara Croshier of Vista, CA, Georgia Otten and her husband, Mac Otten; a brother, William Hassink III and his wife, Dee, of Dayton, OH; aunts, Catherine Jones of Rehoboth Beach, DE; her daughter, Eleanor Louise Stoehr, preceded her in death.

An Episcopal Memorial Service with the Rev. Charles E. B. Gill officiating will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 27 at St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea followed by a reception, in St. Andrew’s Hall. Memorial donations may be sent to the Rector’s Funds, St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 445, Nags Head, NC 27959.

Mildred Elliott

Elizabeth City, NC - Mildred Riggs Elliott, 84 of 1115 Wood Street died Tuesday March 30, 2004, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. Mrs. Elliott was born on June 23, 1919, in the Weeksville Community of Pasqoutank County, and was the daughter of the late Bailey and Sudie Needham Riggs. She was a member of the Church of Christ, formerly of Herrington Road.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Francis Elliott, Sr., and three sisters, Mattie R. Sawyer, Evie R. Austin and Mary R. Provo, and one brother Eural Riggs.

Survivors include two sons; William Francis Elliott, Jr. and his wife Myretta of Lafayette, Louisiana and James E. Elliott, Sr., and his wife Wilma of Elizabeth City, NC, and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford Funeral Home Chapel 405 East Church Street. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Twiford Funeral Home 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, and in the lobby of the funeral home following the service, and other times at the home of her son James E. Elliott, Jr., 110 Selden Street Elizabeth City, NC.

Romans Eglitis

Romans Eglitis, 77, died at his residence on Monday, August 25, 2003. Mr. Eglitis was born in Skriveri, Latvija and was a retired Mechanical Engineer. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Washington, D.C. He was the son of the late Janis and Marta Swanson Eglitis.

Mr. Eglitis is survived by his wife, Nina Rozenieks Eglitis of the home, one daughter, Inga Francis, Esquire and her husband Richard Francis, Esquire of Boykins, VA, one son, Dr. Martins Eglitis and wife, Dr. Beth Eglitis of Indianapolis, Indiana; one God-son, Andris Paza, two grandchildren, Kersti Anna Francis and Aleksandris Konstantinis Eglitis.

A memorial service will be held at 4172 Thick Ridge Road in Kitty Hawk on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Anita Varsbergs – Paza officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Dare County Hospice, Dare County, NC 27954.

Charlie Edwards
Native of Pasquotank County

Charles Ray Edwards, age 57, of 1145 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Edwards, a native of Pasquotank County, was the husband of Virginia Dunlo Edwards of the residence and the son of Nellie Mae Simpson Edwards of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Irvin Woodrow Edwards, Sr. He was a US Army Veteran, a self-employed painter, and a Pentecostal Holiness.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Sherry Kight of Camden, NC, and Marie Wetherington of Dover, NC; two step-sons, Ronald Earl Davenport of Palm Bay, FL, and Michael Hales of Carceno, LA; one sister, Sandy Edwards Meads of Elizabeth City, NC; four brothers, Marvin Woodrow Edwards of Fayetteville, NC, Rev. Roger Wayne Edwards of Gordonsville, VA, Irvin W. Edwards, Jr., of Kitty Hawk, NC, and Ricky Lee Edwards of Shiloh, NC; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by a son, Randy Lee Edwards.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 19, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. M. L. Bloodsworth officiating. Burial with full military honors rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post # 6060 will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery Veteran’s Section. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of the sister, Mr. & Mrs. Brent Meads, 1015 John White Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetics Association, 434 Fayetteville Street West, Raleigh, NC 27601.

Gary Wayne Edmondson
Native of Roanoke, VA

Gary Wayne Edmondson, age 58, of 125 Spindrift Trail, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, May 6, 2004. He was a native of Roanoke, VA, and was son the late John R. Edmondson and Roberta McCall Edmondson, and was husband of the late Joan Thompson Edmondson. He worked as a Machinist for Norshipco Shipyard, and was a member of Trinity Baptist Fellowship.

He is survived by one son, John Alan Edmondson of the residence, and three brothers, John M. Edmondson of Roanoke, VA, Walter H. Edmondson of West Palm Beach, FL, and Richard L. Edmondson of Niceville, FL.

A funeral service will be Monday, May 10, 2004, at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Mansingh officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. The family request that memorial donations be made to Trinity Baptist Fellowship Building Fund, 2554 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909. Annette Edmondson

MANTEO, NC - ANNETTE NOBLE EDMONDSON, 60, of Manteo, NC died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Edmondson, born in Belhaven, NC was employed with Dare County as a receptionist. She had 29 years of service with Dare County having also served with the School System, the Health Department and Animal Control. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Roanoke Island Order of Eastern Star #79 and was a Sunday School teacher. She was the daughter of Nellie Douglas Noble of Manteo and the late Arleigh Baxter Noble.

Mrs. Edmondson is survived by her husband, Maurice Phelps “Phelpie” Edmondson of the residence; two daughters, Donna E. Elliott and husband, Mike of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Carol Edmondson of Manteo, NC; three brothers, Billy Noble and wife, Ann of Manteo, NC, Richard Noble and wife, Amy of Belhaven, NC and Wade Noble and wife Ricki of Yorktown, VA; and two grandchildren, Brooke and Michael Elliott.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Manteo Baptist Church, Manteo on Sunday, July 27, 2003 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church, POB 5, Manteo, NC 27954.

Alleada Edmonds

Elizabeth City, NC - Alleada Christine Edmonds, age 84, of Keller Lane, Grandy, NC, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Norfolk, VA, and the daughter of the late William Raleigh Edmonds, and Alleada Tarkington Edmonds Snow. She was a retired saleslady for Peoples Drug Store, and a member of the American Legion Hut, and a Baptist.

Mrs. Edmonds is survived by one daughter, Linda L. Toup of Baltimore, MD; two sons, Charles R. Davis of Va. Beach, VA, and William Dixon Lomax of Central, SC; several grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, June 26, 2004 at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will greet friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Twiford Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Etheridge Eason

Camden, NC - Gladys Etheridge Eason, 84, of 111 Upton Road, Camden, NC, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Norfolk, VA: the daughter of the late Winfred T. and Mae Ives Etheridge and was the wife of the late Robert “Bob” Lane Eason. She was the owner and secretary of Evans and Etheridge Auto Repair and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Eason is survived by a daughter, Roberta Eason Wallace of Denton, TX, a sister, Evelyn Sharber of Elizabeth City, NC and two grandchildren, Pamela and Angela Wallace.

A funeral service will be Saturday, May 31, 2003 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 2:00 pm. with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, May 30, 2003 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC and following the service in the lobby of funeral home.

David Lee Durrett

Virginia Beach – David Lee Durrett, 37, died on Sunday, August. 1, 2004. He served 19 years in the Navy as a Gunner’s Mate 1st class, Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman.

He is survived by his wife Linda M. Durrett; his son Andrew P. Durrett, mother Linda J. Oaks of Greenwood, IN; sister Karen Fancher of Greenwood, IN. He is preceeded in death by his step-father, Thomas Oaks.

A funeral service will be held at the Little Creek Chapel, Naval Amphibious Base on Friday, August 6th, 2004 at 1PM with interment to follow at Colonial Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lymphomic Cancer Society in his name.
