Leonard 'Tommy' Canupp
SMITHFIELD, N.C. - Leonard J. "Tommy" Canupp, 74, died Monday, June 1, 1998.
Born May 31, 1924, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Charlie C. and Charlotte Mae Hall Canupp.
He was married
to Louise Davis Canupp, who survives.
He was a retired freight agent with Southern Railway and was a member of Local Union 785-United Association of Pipefitters.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was also a member of Pou-Parrish American Legion Post 132.
He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church in Smithfield.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Dennis Canupp of Smithfield and Bob Canupp of Richlands; a daughter, Sue C. Marion of Pfafftown; a sister, Rush Walker of Danville, Va.; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers, James R. Canupp, Raymond F. Canupp and Edward F. Canupp, all of Danville, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma by the Rev. Sherrill Stevens and the Rev. Norman Band. Burial will be in Oakland Heights Cemetery in Smithfield.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Margaret Hillman
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Margaret Mildred Cox Hillman, 94, 601 Oak-View Loop Road, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at the Brian Center Health Care, Yanceyville.
Born Feb. 1, 1904, in Campbell County, Ky., she was the daughter of Milton Cox and Luella Mae Richards Cox.
She was a homemaker, past postmaster of United States Postal Service, bookstore manager and dean of Women Atlanta Christian College, East Point, Ga.
She was a member of Oakview Presbyterian Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Levi Hillman Sr., who died in April 1952.
Survivors include two daughters, Margie Hillman Fessler of Tennille, Ga., and Mattie Lue Dumas of Pembrook Pirer, Fla.; two sons, Stanley Levi Hillman Jr. of Ruffin and Robert L. Hillman of Purley; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Erlanger, Ky.
The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, with a memorial service immediately following visitation at the funeral home.

Stephen Eskridge
PELHAM, N.C. - Stephen L. Eskridge, 41, 110 Woodwind Drive, died Monday, June 2 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Born Oct. 30, 1956, in Annandale, Va., he was the son of Hubert Lewis Eskridge, who survives.
On Oct. 15, 1993, he was married
to Jo Beth Haskins Eskridge, who also survives.
He was a member of Church of Outreach Ministries.
He was employed as a security guard for Burns Security.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his father of North Carolina, survivors include two daughters, Joy Haskins and Tracy Gunter, both of the residence; and two sons, Cory Eskridge of Providence and Cody Gunter of the residence.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Loretta Barbour.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Charles Yarbrough
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Charles Layton Yarbrough, 59, 820 U.S. Hwy. 158 West, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at UNC Hospitals. He had been in declining health for several months.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Ashley and Mamie Cheek Yarbrough.
He was a graduate of Bartlett-Yancey High School and was service manager for Green Fuel Company.
He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church and served on various committees. He served as a fireman for 34 years and was deputy chief for the Yanceyville Fire Department.
He was first married
to Frances Dooley Yarbrough, who predeceased him in 1981. He was later married
to Marie Stephens Yarbrough, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Steve Yarbrough of the residence and Chuck Yarbrough of Blanch and Randy Yarbrough of Anderson; a sister, Sue Scearce of Mt. Airy; a half sister, Dorothy Chandler of Milton; a half brother, Glen Pattillo of Raleigh; a stepson, Scott Stephens of Burlington; and four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. David Powell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home.
Carrie Smith
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Carrie Hughes Smith, 89, 521 Frank Smith Road, died Friday, June 19, 1998, at the Brian Center. She had been in declining health for several months.
Born May 17, 1909, she was the daughter of Daniel R. Hughes and Margaret McIntyre Hughes.
She was a homemaker and member of Griers Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Annette S. McDuffie of Leasburg, N.C.; one son, Charles D. Smith of Leasburg; seven half-sisters, Virginia Skinner of Farmville, N.C., Katy Webb, Lelia Walston, Frances Price, Mildred Edwards and Eugenia Leggett, all of Tarboro, N.C. and Rebecca Powell of Newport News, Va.; four grandchildren, thre great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Annette S. McDuffie, 51 Frank Smith Road.

Milton Rowland
FRANKLIN, N.C. - Milton Monroe Rowland, 84, of 960 Ray Creek Road, died Monday, June 22, 1998.
Born January 10, 1914, in North Carolina, he was the son of Judd Rowland and Florence Mack Rowland.
He was a former employee of Lane Company and was a member of Oak Dale Baptist Church. He was married
to Marie Tallent Rowland, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one son, Ray Russell Rowland of Pittsville, Va.; two daughters, Geraldene Cobbs of Lynchburg, Va., and Joyce R. Hughes of Franklin; one brother, Emmett Rowland of Kings Mountain; one sister, Mae Tallent of Pittsville, Va.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pittsville Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery by the Rev. James Tallent and Jack Mason.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at Ray R. Rowland's residence, 5552 Brights Road, Pittsville.
Edwin Cooke
HILDEBRAN, N.C. - Edwin Stone Cooke, 69, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Valdese General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born March 8, 1929, in Burke County, he was the son of Finley F. and Sarah Lucy Abernathy Cook.
He was a member of Hildebran United Methodist Church. He was employed with Lenoir-Rhyne College as a Lab Technician in the Physics Department. He served in World War II, in the Army Air Force.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Lou Hall of Danville, Karolyn Pullen of Pulaski and Sarah Magann of Georgetown, S.C.; and one brother, Dr. Charles F. Cooke of Hildebran.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Finley Lamar Cook, Jimmy Lowrance Cook and Worth Alexander Cooke and step-father, the Rev. Gerald Tomlinson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Coble officiating. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park with military rites by American Legion Post No. 48.
Nephews and close friends will serve as Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be in the Lunch Bunch at Lenoir-Rhyne College.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
J. Lowe
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - J. Marie Lowe, 52, of 4346 Shady Grove Road, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 1, 1998, at her residence.
Born Jan. 15, 1946, in Halifax, she was the daughter of Jim Daniel and Eva Stansburg Smith, Pete and Margaret Christianson of Pelham.
She was married
to Jay Lowe, who survives.
She spent most of her life in the Providence community of Caswell County. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Reidsville for 9 years as a rural carrier. She was a member of New King Memorial Baptist Church of Eden.
In addition to her husband of twenty years, survivors include one daughter, Mim Craig of Danville, Va.; two sons, Lee Roach, Jr. of Mebane, and Ronnie Roach of Pelham; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. George McDowell officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Robert Gunn, Jr.
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Robert Gunn, Jr., of 492 Dillard School Dr., died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at his residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1927, in Caswell County, he was the son of Robert and Prenella Graves.
He was married
to Emma Oliver Gunn, who survives.
He was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church, and was a retired security guard at Hanover Mill.
He was a United States Army veteran.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two step-sons, Linzy Watlington and Arthur Watlington, both of Yanceyville; three sisters, St. Clair Robinson of Danville, Gladys Bigelow and Nettie Bigelow, both of Yanceyville; eight step-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
