Rev. William Tate
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Rev. William Tate, 84, of Brian Center Nursing Home, formerly of 173 9th Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 15, 1916 in Caswell County, he was a son of Bruce Hester and Fannie Boswell Tate.
He was married
to Allie Mae Willis, who predeceased him.
At an early age he united with Graves Chapel Baptist Church. In 1948 he moved to Newburgh, N.Y., where he joined a new church and entered the ministry. He worked for Newburgh city as a sanitation worker before retirement. After returning to Caswell County he rejoined Graves Chapel Baptist Church. In 1994 he joined Corbett Memorial Baptist Church where he was the associated pastor until his health began to decline. He sung with many gospel groups in Yanceyville and Newburgh, N.Y.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Melvin Johnson of Yanceyville; two sons, Robert H. Tate of Yanceyville and William Clifton Tate of Danville, Va.; one sister, Mattie Williams of Green Level; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Adolphus Tate, Robert Tate, John Tate and Thomas Tate, and six sisters, Lucille Yellok, Claudia Turner, Joyce Johnson, Gracie Robertson, Sarah Tate and Annie Bell Richmond.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Corbett Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Corbett officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Fulton Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his son, Robert H. Tate, 3311 HWY 86 N.
Joseph McDowell
PELHAM, N.C. — Joseph Ray McDowell, 49, of 292 Pruitt Road died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at his residence.
Born March 7, 1951, in Caswell County, he was a son of Raymond McDowell and Dorothy Roberts McDowell.
He was married
to Regina Emerson McDowell, who survives. He lived his life in Pelham and Providence and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections in 1997 on disability.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Candice Shelton of Pelham; one son, Joseph Ray McDowell Jr. of the residence; one sister, Judy Stewart of Exmore, Va., and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Louis Emerson and the Rev. Hassell Priddy officiating. Interment will follow at Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Lettie Page Ellington
RUFFIN, N.C. — Lettie Page Ellington, 91, of 2889 Guerrant Springs Road died Tuesday night, January 9, 2001 at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 12, 11:00 AM in Happy Home Church cemetery with the Rev. Bland Leebrick, Jr. officiating.
Mrs. Ellington was born December 20, 1909 to the late Jack Page and Carrie Smith Page. She married
Woodrow Ellington on December 8, 1934. She was a homemaker and member of Happy Home United Church of Christ. In addition to her husband, survivors include son, Ray Ellington and wife, Pat; grandson, David Ellington and wife, Angie; Great Grandson, David Jeffrey "DJ" Ellington; Sister, Sallie Ann Mills; brother, Robert Page, all of Ruffin and Brother, William Page of Reidsville.
The family will receive friends at the home of the son, 2871 Guerrant Springs Road, Ruffin.

Glendell Patterson
Reidsville, N.C. — Glendell Newman Patterson, 78, formerly of 2101 S. Scales Street, died Friday, January 12, 2001 at Britthaven Nursing Center in Madison, N.C.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13th, 7:00 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home with the visitation following the service. Graveside rites will be held on Sunday, January 14th 3:00 p.m. at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.
Mrs. Patterson was the daughter of the late Robert Jesse and Pearl Smiley Newman of Danville, Va. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Reidsville, N.C. and a retiree of Duke Power in Charlotte, N.C.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Fred H. Patterson of Britthaven Nursing Center, Madison, N.C.; Sister, Hortense N. Slaydon Hopper of Reidsville; Neices, Pamela Slaydon of Maxton, N.C., Lauran S. Garst of Oak Ridge, N.C. and Dana S. Taylor of Summerfield, N.C.
The family will be at the residence of the sister, Hortense N. Slaydon Hopper, 410 Gilmer Circle, Reidsville, N.C.

Mattie Pryor
REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Mattie Scearce Pryor, 95, of 917 Camp Dan Valley Road, died Wednesday, January 10, 2001, at Brian Center, Eden.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2:30 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jay Noland officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Pryor was a native of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was a homemaker and a member of College Park Baptist Church and daughter of the late Edward and Virginia Scearce. She was preceded in death by her husband John Decator Pryor and was the last of her generation.
She is survived by her sons Raymond L. Pryor and wife, Olivia of Ruffin and Kenneth I. Pryor and wife, Barbara of Reidsville. Daughter Jacque P. McCollum and husband, Bill of Moncks Corner, S.C. Four Grandchildren, David McCollum, Pamela M. Dunlap, Rodney Pryor, and Kenneth I. "Kip" Pryor II. Three Great Grandchildren.
Bertha Clark Dixon
REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Bertha Clark Dixon, 93, of 1020 Cypress Dr. Apt. C. died Sunday at Annie Penn Hospital.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Moore and Rev. Dave Huggins officiating. Interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery.
A native of Chatham Co., she was a daughter of the late Gurney Monroe and Rojinnie Johnson Clark and she had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a retired receptionist with Annie Penn Hospital, a faithful member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday school Class and the WMU. Mrs. Dixon was preceded in death by her Husband: Harry Thomas Dixon, 2 Sons: Paul Durwood Dixon and Dwight Lee Dixon, 3 Brothers: Eppa Clark, Bill Clark, and Walter Reid Clark, 1 Sister: Mozelle Thomas, and by her grandson: Charles Dixon.
Surviving are 4 Sons: Jack Dixon and wife: Miriam Dixon of Largo, Fla., Bernice Dixon and wife: Frances Dixon of Greensboro, Max Dixon and wife: Pat Dixon of Rocky Mount, NC, Donald Dixon and wife: Betty Dixon of Shelby, NC; 2 Daughters, Evelyn Carter and husband: Herman Carter of Reidsville and Maxine Fargis and husband: Mike Fargis of Reidsville; 1 Daughter-in-Law: Linda Robertson Dixon of Reidsville; 1 Sister: Margaret Thrift of Saxaphaw, NC; 15 Grandchildren (including Dr. Donna Fargis Helton) aned 18 Great-Grandchildren.

Louise Bedsole
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Louise Pugh Bedsole, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Survivors include two sons, Carlton T. Bedsole of Long Beach, formerly of Danville, Va. and W. David Bedsole of Fayetteville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday in Fayetteville.
Emma Crutchfield
DURHAM, N.C. — Emma Crutchfield, 70, of 675 Crutchfield Road died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Duke Medical Center.
Born March 10, 1930, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Robert Crutchfield and Sally Lawson Crutchfield.
She was married
to John Ivory Jay, who predeceased her. She attended the public schools of Caswell County and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Rena Bobbitt of East Orange, N.J., Mollie Wilkerson of Milton and Louise C. Garland of Semora and three brothers, William and Charlie Crutchfield of Milton and Joe Crutchfield of Semora.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Brud Perry officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 12-8 p.m. Tuesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.
Merle Solomon
ROXBORO, N.C. — Merle Silas Solomon, 67, of 1609 Burlington Road died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Born in Person County, he was a son of Silas Merriman and Helen Ashley Solomon.
He was married
to Jean Horner Solomon, who survives. He had been in business since 1951 with Solomon Enterprise. He was the owner of Solomon Collectible Cars and was a member of Warren’s Grove United Methodist Church. He endowed the Merle & Jean Solomon Scholarship Fund in 1994.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, David Merle Solomon, Donald Mark Solomon, Clyde Anthony Solomon and Dwight Madison Solomon, all of Roxboro; two brothers, C. Merriman Solomon of Roxboro and Larry A. Solomon of Semora; one sister, Kathryn S. Hays of Inverness, Fla, and eight grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Susan Harthon and the Rev. Buddy Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

John Doe
PELHAM, N.C. — John Doe, of 3004 Chandler Mill Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001 at Brian Center, Eden.
Born in Pelham, he was the son of Jack and Bell Anderson Doe. A retired farmer, he was a member of Gwynn's Chapel Baptist Church and a member of Pelham Masonic Lodge No. 571.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. John B. Doe Jr. of Pelham and Cleophis W. Doe of Jersey City, N.J.; one daughter, Louise D. Russell of Baltimore, Maryland; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Gwynn's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. J.B. Doe officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at McLaurin Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of the Rev. J.B. Doe, 3064 Chandler Mill Rd., Pelham.
Donald Irvin
MILTON, N.C. — Donald Meredith "Duck" Irvin, 59, of 2278 N.C. Hwy 57 North died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his residence.
Born Feb. 4, 1941, in Person County, he was the son of Clarence Irvin, who survives, and Althea Irvin.
He attended the public schools of Person County and was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father, Clarence Irvin of Semora.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Wenstly officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 12 to 8 p.m. Friday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.
