William Stamps

PELHAM, N.C. — William Henry Stamps, 72, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 18, 1927, in Caswell County, he was the son of James Stamps and Ollie Mae Brown Stamps.
He was married icon to Elizabeth Blackwell Stamps, who survives. He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church and sung with the male chorus. He was an employee of Dan River Mills until his retirement. He joined the United States Army after his education.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four daughters, Gloria Stamps Henderson and Barbara Stamps Brown, both of Pelham, Linda Stamps Gannaway of Yanceyville and Mary Howard Gant of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Alner Brown of Ruffin; two sisters, Etrulia Luckett of Pennsylvania and Izetta Williams of Mebane; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sisters, Myrtle McQuire and Thelma Price and two brothers, James Walter Stamps and Robert Stamps.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Red Hill Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Chapel.
The family will be receiving friends Saturday at the residence of Gloria Stamps Henderson, 719 Mineral Spring Road, Pelham.

Frances Austin

BURLINGTON, N.C. —Frances Brincefield Austin, 72, of 406 Trail Two, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.
Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of William Washington Brincefield and Imelda Flemning Brincefield.
She was married icon to Everett Milton Austin, who survives. She worked as a bookkeeper for Perry Energy Contractors until her retirement and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a member of Teresians.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two daughters, Imelda A. Hunley of Knoxville, Tenn. and Mary Jane Coble of Danville, Va.; one son, William Bertis Austin of Mebane; six grandchildren and one brother, William Coleman Brincefield of Salisbury.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one grandson; two sisters, Mary Cecila Barnes and Imelda Brincefield and one brother, George Sherry.
The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Briant Cullinane officiating. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. The Catholic Prayer Service will follow at 6 p.m.
The family will be at the residence.
The family suggests memorial donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Building Fund, 408 W. Davis St., Burlington, NC 27215; American Cancer Society; Alamance Regional Medical Arts Center, 1236 Huffman Mill Road, Suite 1050, Burlington, NC 27215 or a charity of choice.
Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Bailey Jr.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Clyde Lester "Bill" Bailey Jr. of 3 Coventry Place, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Born July 28, 1925, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Clyde L. Bailey and Stella Kerns Bailey.
He was married icon to Ann Garrett Bailey, who survives. He was a graduate of George Washington High School and a 1949 graduate of Wake Forest University. He did post-graduate work at Virginia Tech and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp. He retired from A.M.P. Inc. in 1994 after 25 years of service. He was also employed by Dan River Inc., Allied Chemical Co. and Deering Millican Company.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Susan B. Burke of Alameda, Calif. and Celeste B. Collins of Asheville; two sons, Clyde L. Bailey III of Ephram, Utah and David K. Bailey of Stokesdale.; one brother, T.A. Kerns of Richmond, Va. and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Stella "Jac" Bailey Adams.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David K. Bailey officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Community Church, P.O. Box 355, Stokesdale, NC 27357.

Dewey Gilley Sr.

EDEN, N.C. — Dewey Cabell Gilley, Sr. was born on August 27, 1913 in Eden, North Carolina, the son of Joseph Cabell Gilley and Katie Snow Gilley. Mr. Gilley passed away on May 3, 2001 in Danville, Virginia after a brief illness. He graduated from Leaksville High School and began ownership and operation with his father of Tri-City Transportation Company for this region. On July 8, 1940 Mr. Gilley married icon his late beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Johnston Gibbs Gilley. Mr. Gilley is survived by his son, Dewey Cabell Gilley, Jr., Esq., of Beaufort, South Carolina, and his daughter, Dr. Mary Johnston Gilley Shiller of Akron, Ohio. Mr. Gilley had three grandchildren, Duncan Cabell Gilley, Agnes Heather Marie Gilley, and Mary Elisabeth Johnston Shiller. Mr. Gilley had a sister, Leone Gilley Eggleston, and a late sister, Margaret Gilley Parker. He also had a sister-in-law, Pattie Reid Gibbs Ward. Mr. Gilley retired from the transportation industry in 1978, had a keen love of religious knowledge and American history, and was a life-long sports enthusiast. Mr. Gilley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Eden since 1948, served as a Deacon, and was instrumental in the building of the current Church structure in 1950. The family requests that memorials be made either to the First Presbyterian Church of Eden or the Eden Da Vita Dialysis Center for the benefit of patients in Eden. The family will receive visitors at Fair Funeral Home on Sunday, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Monday, May 7, 2001, 11:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Eden, with interment at Overlook Cemetery.

Virginia Hughes

MILTON, N.C. — Virginia Mae Hughes, 65, of 4075 Yarbourgh Mill Road, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 9, 1935, she was the daughter of Peerman and Amelia Brandon.
She was married icon to John Hughes, who survives. She was a native of Pittsylvania County and attended the public schools of Pittsylvania County. She was a member of Apostolic Faith Holiness Church in Ringgold, Va.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Patricia Womack of Leasburg;; four sons, Tony Hughes of Pennsylvania; John Hughes of Greensboro; Mark and Ulysses Hughes of the residence; five sisters, Alma Hughes, Virgie Oliver and Elaine Moore, all of Danville, Va., Frances Brandon of Connecticut and Vonell Brandon of Richmond; two brothers, Peerman Brandon Jr. and Percel Brandon, both of Danville, Va. and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Apostlic Faith Holiness Church in Ringgold, Va. with W.A. Watkins officiating. Interment will take place at Oak Level Church cemetery in Semora. Viewing will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

Ernest Lee Sr.

RUFFIN, N.C. — Ernest Jackson Lee Sr., 80, of 9228 U.S. Business Highway 29 North, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Born in Rockingham County, he was the son of Andrew Lee and Gracie Baker Lee.
He was married icon to Mattie Evans Lee, who survives. He was the co-owner of King and Lee Exxon before his retirement and had 47 years of service with the Exxon Corporation. He was a member of Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and the treasurer for 55 years. He was a Sunday School teacher and the Family Life Center of the church was dedicated in his honor on his 75th birthday. He was a United States Army Air Force veteran, serving in World War II, where he was an ace pilot in the bomber squadron 15th Air Force. He later served as the Chaplain for the Rockingham County Combat Airmen.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, E.J. Lee Jr. of Reidsville; one daughter, Wanda Lee Manley of Ruffin; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; half-brothers, Richard Evans, Clifton Evans, Lewis Lee, Danny Lee and Robert Lee and half-sisters, Alice Watkins, Dellas Glossom and Louise Poindexter.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with military graveside rites performed by Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church, 261 Estes Road, Ruffin, N.C. 27326.

Noel McDaniel

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Noel Percy McDaniel, 91, of 127 Mullins Road, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Sunbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Gretna, Va., he was the son of Charles Edward McDaniel and Mary Rebecca Midkiff McDaniel.
He was married icon to Dorothy Pruitt McDaniel, who survives. He was a retired carpenter and attended Lawsonville Road Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include children, Aaron McDaniel, ann Evans, Cindy Chilton, Allison Jones and Patricia Wilson, all of Reidsville; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Reidlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at 3063 Highway 158 East.
Wilkerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nagib Hanna

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mr. Nagib G. Hanna, of Charlotte, NC, went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2001.
Mr. Hanna was born on February 27, 1911 in Egypt. He came to know the Lord Jesus as his Savior at an early age, and he expectantly awaited the Lord’s return. He married icon Fadwa Hanna on July 13, 1937. She preceded him in death to be with the Lord.
Surviving are their children Andre Hanna of Danville, Illinois; Margaret Bassali of West Palm Beach, Florida; Samuel Hanna of Huntington Beach, California; and Evette Riad of Alexandria, Egypt; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother Fakhry Hanna as well as many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Harry and Bryant Chapel in the Oaks, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Harry and Bryant Chapel from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM today.
Memorials may be made in his memory to Carmel Hill Retirement Community, 2801 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Hanna.

Garnett Cooper

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Garnett Clements Cooper, 83, of 327 West Main Street, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 18, 1917, in Franklin County, Va., he was a son of Ord and Della Rigney Cooper. He was a retired electrician from Dan River Mills. Educated in Franklin County schools, he was of the Baptist faith and served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific for two years and seven months. He was married icon to Katherine Hunter Cooper, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Thomas Hunter Cooper of Wilmington, N.C., Jerry Parks Cooper and Charles Daniel Cooper, both of Graham, N.C.; one sister, Thalia C. Bradley of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Samuel F. Cooper of Wytheville, Va.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Claude Harrelson and the Rev. Daniel H. Brock officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday at Harrelson Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.

Mary Woodson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Mary P. Woodson, 88, of the Brian Center died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Born March 20, 1913, in Pittsylvania County she was the daughter of Thomas Wade Parker and Etta Fox Parker. She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Lukes.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Woodson of Yanceyville and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Etta Mae Worrell, Jettie Jefferson; and one brother, Robert Wade Parker.
A private memorial service will be held.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
