Mr. Carl Hardy Brackett, 49, died Feb. 7, 1998. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at McMahan's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Asheville.

Mrs. Doris Pauline ``Polly" Mask, 74, died Feb. 8, 1998. Fuenral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home, Lenoir.

James Donald ``Don" Belton, 59, died Feb. 8, 1998. Funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday at River Valley Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sossoman Funeral Home.

Lula Grace D. Kirk, 93, died Feb. 8, 1998. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pendry's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Mary Juanita Cline Walker Pipes, 80, died Feb. 8, 1998. Funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pendry's Funeral Home. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Susan ``Aunt Jane`' Shrum Beal, 93, died Monday, February 9, 1998 at Cardinal Healthcare. Memorial service is 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Ernie Richards, Rev. Wray Barrett and Rev. Tom Campbell officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 7:00-8:30 pm Tuesday at the church.
Ms. Beal was preceded in death by a daughter, Mattie M. Richard. She is survived by 3 sons, William E. Beal and Milas L. Beal, both of Lincolnton, NC and Darrell V. Beal of Maiden, NC; 7 daughters, Evie Lynch of Greensboro, Marie B. Wilkinson of Denver, Joyce Mitchem of Lawndale, NC, Queeta M. Harkey and Betty J. Setzer, both of Lincolnton, Shirley C. Sigmon of Iron Station, and Linda B. Chambers of Surfside, SC; half brother O.G. Shrum of Lincolnton; 23 grandchildren and number of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Henry Jackson Cooke, 52, of 3281 Henry Knob Rd., Clover, died Jan. 29, 1998, at home.
Graveside service is 2 p.m. today in Woodside Cemetery with the Rev. Elwood Seamster officiating. Visitation is at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover, following the service.
Born Feb. 27, 1945, in York County, Mr. Cooke was a son of the late William Howard Cooke and Pearl Jones Cooke and was a missionary.
Survivors include a son, David Cooke of Dover, DE; daughters, Susan C. Wooden of Spring Grove, VA, Tina E. Cooke of Chesapeake, VA, and Jenny Cooke of Dover, DL; brothers, Ronnie Cook and Calvin Cook, both of Clover, Dub Cook of York, Glenn Cook of Belmont, NC, and Don Cook of Lake Wylie; sisters, Linda Apple and Anne Beaver, both of Gastonia, NC, Margie Martin of Charlotte, NC, and Carolyn Cook of Belmont, NC; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Walter Lynn ``Bud" Samples, 69, formerly of Matthews, NC, died February 7, 1998 at his Fort Valley, GA home.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at Williams-Dearborn Funeral Service in Matthews with The Reverend N.R. Strickland officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. prior to the service on Wednesday.
Mr. Samples was born January 15, 1929 in Newport, TN to the late John R. and Daisy Reneau Samples. He grew up in Hickory, NC, where he graduated from High School. In 1996, Mr. Samples retired as President of H&S; Building Co. which specialized in building Western Steer Steak Houses. Bud, as he was known by friends, was a devoted dog trainer and handler. He was past president of Piedmont Kennel Club having served several terms. He and his wife, Margaret, were responsible for raising and showing several champions of various breeds.
Mr. Samples is survived by his wife, Margaret of Sylvania, GA; his sons, Drew Samples of Houston, TX, Dirk Samples of Concord, Lynn Samples of Charlotte; daughters, Carole Dunn of Atlanta, GA, Brenda Robertson and Candace Archer, both of Charlotte; He also leaves his stepchildren, Doug Hogue, David Hogue and Deb Hayes, all of Matthews. Mr. Samples will be missed by his nine grandchildren.

Wanda Black Hodges, 39, of 417 S. Cherokee St., died February 8, 1998. She was a native of Cleveland Co., NC, a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Gastonia, NC. She was an employee of Clar-Mar Textiles in Cherryville, NC.
Survivors include a daughter, LaShea Childers of Boiling Springs, NC; mother and step-father, Sue and Clarence Grigg of Kings Mountain; father, Bobby Douglass Black of Shelby, NC; brothers, Bobby Black of Kings Mountain, and Jamie Grigg of Gastonia, NC; three step-brothers, Charlie Grigg of Shelby, Bobby and Don Grigg, both of Newton, NC; sisters, Betty Wray of Cherryville, NC, Sandra Black Bessemer City, NC; step-sister, Margie Moss of Shelby, NC.
Funeral is 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Hope, officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Harris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Frances Taylor Horton, 89, of 275 W. Second St., Kershaw, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998.
Funeral is 3 p.m. Wednesday at Abney Baptist Church with the Revs. Mendle Baker, Larry Plyler and Trent McLaughlin officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, and other times at the home of Vera and Hazel Robinson, 121 W. First St.
Born Aug. 28, 1908, Mrs. Horton was a daughter of the late John and Lisa Heyward Taylor, widow of Lonnie Horton, was a member of Abney Baptist Church and a retiree from Springs Industries.
Survivors include sons, L.J. Horton of Great Falls and Edward Horton and Wilbur Horton, both of Kershaw; daughters, Mrs. Robert (Gaynell) Horton of McBee, Mrs. Hazel (Vera) Robinson and Mrs. Odell (Betty) Hinson, both of Kershaw; brothers, Floyd Taylor of Great Falls, Lee Taylor and Ernest Taylor, both of Kershaw; sisters, Mrs. Hattie T. Miller, Mrs. Hap (Ella) Hill and Mrs. Jerry (Drucilla) McManus, all of Lancaster, Ms. Grace Taylor and Mrs. Fred (Gussie) Keziah, both of Great Falls, and Ms. Katherine Taylor of Kershaw; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Abney Baptist Church, 3706 Roberts Rd., Kershaw, SC 29067.
Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, is serving the Horton family.

Mrs. Edna Sharpe Huie, 80, of Charlotte, died February 8, 1998 at Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel with Rev. David Gayles officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel.
Born April 18, 1917 in Kannapolis, NC, daughter of the late John D. Sharpe and Willie Junkins Sharpe, she was a member of Plaza Baptist Church, member of Order of Eastern Star Bethlehem Chapter #257. She retired from A&P; Co. after 35 years in the regional office, Charlotte.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Huie of Charlotte; brother, Rev. Carl M. Sharpe of Alexandria, VA; three sisters-in-law, Matt Sharpe of Newton, NC, Myrtle Sharpe of Canton, SC, Katherine Sharpe of Miramar, FL; nieces, Martha Burgess, Patricia Bolick, Cynthia Sharpe Zakhmi; nephews, David E. Sharpe, Curtis R. Sharpe, Jr., Raymond A. Sharpe, Jr., and James Kirby Sharpe, Sr.

Mrs. Eva G. Hamrick, 82, died April 16, 1998. Funeral is 4 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church. Interment in church cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Padgett & King Mortuary, Forest City, NC.

Lucille Waters, 70, died April 16, 1998. Service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Crowe's Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sandy Level Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 6:30-9 p.m. tonight Crowe's Mortuary, Rutherfordton.

Glen M. Boger, 85, died Thursday, April 16, 1998. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant, NC is serving the Boger family.

Mr. Aaron Thad Bradley, 30, died April 13, 1998. Graveside service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. tonight at Summersett Funeral Home.

Mr. Robert Mitchell Blanton, 46, died April 16, 1998. Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Franklin Lewis Hess, Jr., 58, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998. Funeral is 11 AM Saturday at Summersett Memorial Chapel. Burial in Rowan Mem. Park Mausoleum. Visitation 7-8:30 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Lucille Waters, 70, died April 16, 1998. Service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Crowe's Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sandy Level Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight Crowe's Mortuary, Rutherfordton.

Mr. John William Strawder, 74, died Thursday, April 16, 1998 at his residence.
Funeral is 11:00 AM Saturday at Davis Funeral Chapel, Monroe. Burial will be in Waxhaw City Cemetery, Waxhaw. Visitation is 7-9 PM Friday at Davis Funeral Home in Monroe.
Mr. Strawder was a retired Plant Supervisor.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hopper Strawder of Waxhaw; son, Thomas G. Strawder of Waxhaw; daughter, CarolAnn F. Hackenberg of Waxhaw; brothers, George Strawder of Lee, Florida, Edward Strawder of Jackson, NJ; sister, Dorothy Belle Oltarzewski of Gallatin, TN; 5 grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Union County.

James ``Jamie" Ray Tadlock, 34, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998. Funeral is 2 PM Saturday at Broad River Baptist Church. Burial in Clingman Mem. Gardens. White Columns Funeral Service is in charge.

Roy Marshall Benson, Sr., 61, died April 16, 1998. Funeral is 2 PM Saturday at The Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Betty Phillips Benson. Arrangements by Piedmont Funeral Home.

Mr. Robert Brantley (Bob) Gay, Sr., 58, of Cornelius, NC, died suddenly Wednesday April 15 at Lake Norman Medical Center in Mooresville, NC. He was a native and long time resident of Charlton County and had been living in North Carolina for the past 3 years. He was a Methodist and a United States Army Veteran. He was a former precision racing crank shaft manufacturer and a top fuel drag racer. He was a graduate of the Charlton County High School Class of 1958 and attended Young-Harris College in Hiawassee, Georgia.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Crews Gay, Cornelius; son, Brant Gay, Folkston, GA; daughter, Kamaran Gay, Cornelius, NC; brother and sister-in-law, William A. (Bill) and Lucy Gay, Woodbine, GA; niece, Tracey Brown, Atlanta, Georgia; nephew, Jeep Gay, Cupertino, CA.
Services will be held Saturday morning April 18 at 11:00 AM at the Folkston United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery in Folkston. The family will receive friends Friday, April 17 from 7:00-9:00 PM at Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston, Georgia.
